Brigham Young University seeks to develop students of faith, intellect
and character who have the skills and the desire to continue learning
and to serve others throughout their lives. Established in 1875, the uni-
versity provides an outstanding education in an atmosphere consistent
with the ideals and principles of its sponsor, The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints.
Known for its academically minded and internationally experienced
student body, its world-class teaching and its beautiful mountain
location, BYU is also recognized for its extensive language programs,
talented performing arts ensembles, outstanding sports programs and
devotion to combining solid scholarship with the principles of the
restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITYWhen NC State University was founded in 1887, the school
embodied ideals that were rapidly transforming the field of higher
education. Chief among them was the belief that colleges should not be
reserved for a select few and that the children of farmers, mechanics
and other workers should have access to the opportunities and benefits
of higher education.
A new generation of progressive thinkers founded the college, known
then as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. No
organization did more to advance the cause of this new institution than
the Watauga Club, a reform-minded group of lawyers, teachers, doctors
and businessmen in Raleigh — all of them younger than 30.
NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal
and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the
country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural
and mechanical arts. Today, we’re a preeminent research enterprise that
excels in science, technology, engineering, math, design, the humani-
ties and social sciences, textiles and veterinary medicine.
NC State students, faculty and staff take problems in hand and work
with industry, government and nonprofit partners to solve them. Our
34,000-plus high-performing students apply what they learn in the real
world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and
performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education
ensures they leave here ready to lead the workforce, confident in the
knowledge that NC State consistently rates as one of the best values in
higher education.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
The University of Notre Dame provides a distinctive voice in higher
education that is at once rigorously intellectual, unapologetically moral
in orientation and firmly embracing of a service ethos.
Founded in 1842 by a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Notre
Dame is an independent, national Catholic research university located
adjacent to the city of South Bend, Indiana, in a metropolitan area of
more than 300,000 residents approximately 90 miles east of Chicago.
Admission to the university is highly competitive, with nearly six appli-
cants for each freshman class position. Seventy percent of incoming
freshmen were in the top five percent of their high school graduating
classes.
The university’s minority student population has more than tripled in
the past 20 years to some 23 percent, and women, first admitted to
undergraduate studies at Notre Dame in 1972, now account for 48 per-
cent of undergraduate and overall enrollment.
The university is organized into four undergraduate colleges — Arts
and Letters, Science, Engineering, and the Mendoza College of
Business — the School of Architecture, the Law School, the Graduate
School, 14 major research institutes, two dozen centers and special
programs, and the University Library system.
With 1,250 acres containing two lakes and 143 buildings with a total
property replacement value of $3.3 billion, Notre Dame is well known for
the quality of its physical plant and the beauty of its campus. The
Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the 14-story Hesburgh Library with its
132-feet-high mural depicting Christ the Teacher, and the University’s
historic Main Building with its famed Golden Dome are among the most
widely known university landmarks in the world.
UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAMEThe University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is an emerging Tier
One research institution specializing in health, energy, security, sustain-
ability, and human and social development.
With nearly 29,000 students, it is the largest university in the San
Antonio metropolitan region. UTSA advances knowledge through
research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement
and public service. The university embraces multicultural traditions and
serves as a center for intellectual and creative resources as well as a
catalyst for socioeconomic development and the commercialization of
intellectual property — for Texas, the nation and the world.
Founded by the Texas Legislature in 1969, UTSA has come a long
way in just 40 years. Administrative offices for the first UTSA president,
Arleigh B. Templeton, were set up in 1970 in Hemisfair Park, and archi-
tects Ford, Powell and Carson Inc. began developing a conceptual
master plan for the campus.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA
The University of South Florida is a high-impact, global research university located in beautiful Tampa Bay on Florida’s spectacular
west coast. It is one of the largest public universities in the nation and is among the top 50 universities, public or private, for federal
research expenditures. The university is one of only four Florida public universities classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the
Advancement of Teaching in the top tier of research universities, a distinction attained by only 2.3 percent of all universities.
At the heart of USF is a vibrant, diverse and engaged student body. Serving nearly 48,000 students, the USF System has an annual
budget of $1.5 billion and an annual economic impact of $4.4 billion. The USF System includes three separately accredited institutions
by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools: USF; USF St. Petersburg; and USF
Sarasota-Manatee. The university’s main Tampa location is home to USF Health, including the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public
Health and Pharmacy.
With 180 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialty and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine, there’s
something for everyone at USF.

This year, more than 54,000 student-athletes will
compete in an NCAA national championship and
share with their teammates a unique sense of joy
and accomplishment. But I’ve seen time and time
again how the student-athletes who are succeeding
at the highest level of sports competition are also
achieving impressive academic success and giving
back to their communities. One of them at the final
site of this very championship will be honored as
the sport’s champion student because he or she
holds the highest grade point average among the
event’s competitors. The Elite 89 award honors
their achievement because it represents everything
for which the NCAA stands.
Athletics plays an essential role in those accom-
plishments: student-athletes consistently tell me
their love for their sport is what drives them to suc-
ceed. Ultimately, it’s the success they experience not
only on the field, but in the classroom and in life
that makes these championships so meaningful. It’s
a chance for us all to stand and cheer on the next
generation of leaders and innovators who will ulti-
mately drive progress in our communities. It is why
the commitment to higher education is a value we
all share. And when we cheer for them at these
events, we’re really celebrating the hard work, deter-
mination and perseverance that helped them ace the
test — in their sport and in their studies.
A lucky few will hoist a trophy in the air when
events like this one are finished, and they will hear
the cheers of their elated fans. Just remember that
along the path to those 89 moments, more than
19,000 teams will share in a meaningful journey
they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
I’m glad you’re here to celebrate one of those
moments of student-athlete success. Enjoy the
championship.
W e gather today from different backgrounds and regions of
the country to cheer for our favorite teams and celebrate
our alma maters. But let’s not forget why we’re really cheer-
ing. College sports, our iconic and treasured American pastimes, are so much
more than what you’ll see in these championship events.
Athletics plays an ESSENTIAL ROLE in those accomplishments: student-athletes consistently tell me their
LOVE FOR THEIR SPORT IS WHAT DRIVES THEM TO SUCCEED. Ultimately, it’s the SUCCESS they experience
not only on the field, but in the CLASSROOM and in LIFE that makes these championships so meaningful.
