On behalf of the North Carolina Simmental Association and DP Sales Management, I would like to take this

opportunity to invite each of you to the North Carolina “Fall Harvest” sale on Saturday, September 1st at 12:00

in Hamptonville, North Carolina. The Fall Harvest will be a the Shuffler sale facility in Hamptonville. Dr Shuffler

has a excellent sale facility with a nice auction arena, grass lots,inside pens, and a great place for the other sale

related events. The North Carolina Simmental Association sales have long time running with sales since 1974. The

Association was formed in 1973 and the first sale in 1974, wow 38 years of sales. Come and visit about the past

and help make plans for the future. Lets all show support of the state association and make Simmental one of the

strongest breeds in North Carolina. This is the memberships sale so I encourage everyone to pull together to make

this the best ever.

This year we have several new consignors and many which have been involved for several years. We appreciate

the Simmentals enthusiasm from the surrounding states such as Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. Each

year we have a lot of new faces to the sale and this year we have had several new breeders inquire about the sale

offering. I challenge each member to invite old members and new potential breeders to this enjoyable sale event.

Anyone that has attended in the past remembers the great sale atmosphere and the solid group of sale cattle. If

you have not attended in the past years, the dinner, annual meeting, and the fun auction please add it to your

plans. Again, a special “Thank You” to Jennie Rucker. the executive secretary of North Carolina Simmental. She

is always busy as a bee and has been involved with the association for 14 or 15 years. Call her for any details.

Everyone is welcome, come you won’t be disappointed.

The offering includes a solid set of bred heifers, several top notch open purebreds and a great set of SimAngus.

This year the offering includes a strong set of productive cows. The pairs and bred cows offered will put your

program in the profit picture. The embryos offered in this years sale are some of the breeds best from some of

the top programs in the country. The Simmental business is good with a strong demand for Simmental bulls and

Simmental influenced feeder cattle. Come and view the offering and be a part of the North Carolina sale weekend.

Herd HealthAll cattle will have proper health charts for immediate interstate shipment. An updated breeding/calving sheet will be available sale day which also will indicate cattle that are OCV and/or from certified and accredited herds. Each animal will be at the purchaser’s risk after it is sold.

InsuranceInsurance for your purchases will be available at the clerk’s desk through Harding and Harding.

Terms of SaleAll cattle will sell under the Suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Simmental Association. All purchases are to be paid for by the purchaser during or immediately after the sale and will not be released until after settlement has been made.

Sale Registration and PaymentAll buyer numbers will only be issued with a valid ID and payment is due day of sale. DP Sales Management would appreciate timely settlement of receivables within 20 days of date of sale. Cattle will not be transferred until paid for in full.

Registration CertificatesCattle will be transferred to the buyer at the seller’s expense. All calves born before the sale are to be registered by the seller; calves born after the sale are to be registered by the purchaser. Buyers must be sure to furnish the sale clerk complete information for transferring of registration certificates.

Presenting Fall 2012 EPDs on a NEW Base The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a com-mon base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evolution for the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry — a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world.

As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first; however, over time we will all grow ac-customed to the new scale. For example look at the aver-age EPDs of purebreds shown in this table.

The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals;it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.
