Transcript of NBSP Portswood Community Group - Newsletter Issue 5
St Denys Community Centre originallyopened in 1976, the main hall being builtfrom dismantled pre-fabs from the PrioryRoad area, followed by the addition of acouple of extra huts.
Since then the main hall has been rebuilt,followed by a total rebuild of the kitchen &other meeting rooms for 2006, plus superbchanging room facilities, for use with theexternal Multi Use Games Area.
The building is used by Southampton DayServices Monday to Friday, who funded the2006 rebuild along with Sports England,leaving the Community only the Main Hall touse through the working week.
Managed by only a small voluntary group,we are in the process of expanding thepremises, through the Asset Transferscheme. This would enable us to furtherimprove the building, and for it to betransferred to the local community. Thiswould not only allow more independencebut also the ability to access new potsof funding.
However to move this forward morevolunteers are needed to come on board atthis exciting time. Plans for the newextension include a Day Nursery, Sprungfloor dance / fitness room, computer suiteas well as extra meeting rooms / offices.
Currently available weekly at the centre areArt Classes, street dance classes, pilates,junior & senior youth groups. We also runregular short IT classes.
We will be expanding our area of benefit toinclude the Portswood, Bevois Valley &Bitterne Park areas. As well as accessingthe above, you could also benefit from FreeSports Coaching courses, through ourSports Funding from Sport England.

Hello to all residents.
Recently your local Safer NeighbourhoodsTeam along with local residents held aNeighbourhood Panel meeting.The reason for this meeting was to discuss anyissues that local residents may have and to setthree priorities for the police or local council toaction.
As a result of this meeting the followingpriorities have been set;
1. Street drinkers on the corner of Northcote Road
2. Reducing the amount of cycle thefts in thearea of Highfield and Portswood.
3. Continue Operation Batcombe Patrols educating and dealing with those studentswho engage in alcohol fuelled rowdy andinconsiderate behaviour as they return totheir accommodation from late nightlicensed premises.
As a result of these priorities being set, thepolice along with its partner agencies andhelp from the local residents will put in placeactions to try and deal with the issues set bythe panel meeting over the next three months.
Please wait for the next SaferNeighbourhoods Team newsletter to see whathas been done to tackle these issues.
