Page 11: Nazi-Soviet Pact

The Role of the USSR

• Britain and France guaranteed the frontiers of Poland in April 1939

• They had no way of protecting Poland from attack

• The USSR was the only country in a position to help Poland

• Britain and France began talks with the USSR but Poland was as afraid of Soviet invasion as Nazi invasion!

• Many people in Britain feared Communism more than Nazism

• Britain and France showed no urgency in signing a deal with Stalin and he felt that they were trying to direct the Nazis east towards him rather than face them in the west.

The Nazi Soviet Pact

• Why was the pact such a surprise?

SURPRISE !!!

Page 13: Nazi-Soviet Pact

Why did they sign ? • 10 year non aggression

pact, Hitler could invade

Poland without worrying

about the USSR

• USSR gave Germany raw

materials such as cotton,

cereals, chemicals, wheat.

• 10 year non aggression

pact. Stalin failed to get a

deal with Britain and France

and so made one with Hitler

to protect the USSR

• Germany gave USSR military

equipment and machinery.

Secret protocol: Germany and USSR agreed to

divide Poland. Germany to invade from the

West and USSR from the East.

Both sides gained time from the deal. Hitler

intended to attack the USSR eventually.

Stalin knew an attack would come.

Why was Hitler confident he could take

over Poland? I hate you but I

will work with

you to get part of

Poland

I hate you but I will work with you to get part of Poland for a

buffer zone

I will attack you

later but I want

to keep you quiet

for now.

I know you will

attack me

eventually but

this deal gives

me time to get

ready

Consequences of the Nazi Soviet Pact

• It made an attack on Poland by Hitler inevitable.

Hitler had feared Soviet involvement but now

knew they would not move against him at this

time.

• Hitler was more confident Britain and France

would back down without the USSR as an ally.

• Britain had lost a potential ally in the USSR, they

had been best placed to oppose the invasion and

now they would be taking part in it against

Poland.
