The Trust has been carrying out its noble activities since its inception in November 2002. Project Illambazar:

Supportive Education Program: Nayantara Memorial Charitable Trust has been working in

the field of providing Supportive Education Services since 2008. Significant improvement has

been seen in the performance of the students. The program has also been able to generate

awareness regarding the need of being educated.

TIFFIN & MID-DAY MEAL : Tiffin was distributed among the students’ regularly & Mid-Day

meal was served once a month. Generally cake, biscuit, puffed rice with grams, sweets, eggs

etc. were distributed in tiffin. During this period total students’ attendance was 54800. The

detail data about Mid-Day Meal program is given below. In all 2832 mid days meals were

served during the year.

Special Day Celebration:

Special Day Celebrated during the period of June 2015 to November 2015 : From the very

beginning of the program Nayantara has been celebrating some special days with their children

by organizing some cultural program. Like every year this year also the trust celebrated

Independence Day, Rakshabandhan, Teachers’ Day & Children’s Day.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION,2015 :

Nayantara Memorial Charitable Trust celebrated 69th Independence Day of India at

Khayerdanga Supportive Education Centre. From the very beginning of the trust Nayantara has

been celebrating Independence day along with all its members & students. The program was

designed to pay tribute to our National Flag through Flag Hoisting & small cultural program,

where the students’ & the members of Nayantara performed some cultural events, like dancing,

singing song, recitation, playing drama etc. related to Independence of India.

RAKSHABANDHAN

The team of Nayantara including all students celebrated Rakshabandhan on 29th of August 2015

at their Education Centres, i.e. Khayerdanga & Rangabandh. Students, Teachers and other staff

members of the Trust participated in the tying Rakhi. The event ended with cultural program

performed by the students. In all 272 students attended the program. At the end of the

program tiffin was distributed among the students.

Celebrating Raksha Bandhan

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION

The students of the Trust celebrated Teachers’ Day on the 5th of September 2015. The

Teachers were the performers for a change. The celebration started with paying tributes to Dr.

S. Radhakrishnan and ended with cultural activities performed by the Teachers. The students

honoured their Teachers with gifts and acknowledged the hard work and effort being put in by

them for the betterment of their students.

CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION,2015

Children’s Day was celebrated on the 14th of November 2015 at the Khayerdanga Supportive

Education Centre. The occasion was graced by Prof. Sabujkoli Sen – Provost & Director of

Studies and Innovation at Viswa Bharati University, Mr. Biswajit Sarkar, Assistant Teacher,

Mathpalsa High School and three Trustees of Nayantara Memorial Charitable Trust. The

program included the finals of the group competition of “An initiative to improve communication

skill & to enhance thinking ability of students ’’. The final competition saw the children making

interesting presentations with photographs and explanation besides answering questions raised

by the audience. It was a first of its kind experience for the students. The presentations on the

topics like “Celebrating Teachers’ Day at Nayantara, Celebrating “Rakshabandhan’’ at Nayantara

& One Day ‘’Students Exposure Visit’’ to Hajarduari saw exhibition of the creative thinking of

the students. Mrs.Mitra Chattapadhyay, the guest teacher of Nayantara guided the children.

CHILDREN’S DAY PROGRAM AT A GLIMPSE

Release of Magazine “UTNAU”:

After the competition the first edition of Magazine, namely “UTNAU`` - comprising of writings &

drawings of the students’ & other members’ of Nayantara was released by Prof. Sabujkoli Sen.

The magazine is an achievement of the Supportive Education Program as it exhibits the

creativity and its expression amongst the students.

RELEASING OF THE MAGAZINE BY PROF.SABUJKOLI SEN

NATURE STUDY CAMP

One day Nature Study Camp was organized by Nayantara on 07.11.15 at Aamkhoi. Aamkhoi is

a small tribal village under Choupahari Jungle of Illambazar Panchayat. The students of

standard III to X participated in the camp. A resource person of Nayantara namely Ms. Pintu

Mal conducted the entire activities of the camp by the help of the other members of Nayantara.

TEACHERS’ EXPOSURE VISIT TO NIMPITH RAMKRISHNA MISSION

A two days exposure visit from 13th to 15th of September 2015 for the teachers was organized.

The entire education team of Nayantara along with managing trustee, senior trustee, some

resource person & few staff members of other project to Nimpith Rasmkrishna Mission,

Jayanagar, South 24 Pargana. The entire Exposure Visit Plan has been conducted under the

guidance of Vivekananda Institute Of Biotechnology (VIB), a research oriented, training institute

working as a wing of Nimpith Ramkrishna Mission.

STUDENTS’ EXPOSURE VISIT TO HAJARDUARI, MURSHIDABAD

The Annual study tour for students was organized on the 4th of October 2015 at Hajarduari

Palace of Murshidabad district, a place with historical importance. Hajarduari is the place with

lots of historical importance of Murshidabad district. A total of 117 students under the guidance

of the Senior Trustee of Nayantara, Mr. Anil Kumar Roy & Coordinator of Supportive Education

Program participated in the tour.

MAINSTREAMING OF THE STUDENTS’: It can be easily stated that under the Supportive Education Program of Nayantara the actual focus is to help the targeted group, i.e. young champs to bring forward & join with the main stream of the society. A number of activities were

undertaken during the course of the year towards achieving this goal.

VISIT TO SCIENCE FAIR AT SUCHANA,UTTARCHANDIPUR

The students of Nayantara along with the Teachers’ & Community Youths went to Suchana, to

participate in the Science Fair organized by them on 16th of August 2015.

Annual Picnic

On 22.11.15 a picnic was organized at Panskura under the forest range of Illambazar which was

attended by the students of AW to standard II. A total of 123 students attended the picnic.

STUDENTS’ WORK SHOP

Nayantara Memorial Charitable Trust has been organized a small Work-Shop session for the

students of standard VIII to X, who are enrolled in Khayerdanga Supportive Education Centre.

The main reason behind organizing this type of session is to develop the communication skill &

enhance thinking ability of the students’. Some of the activities undertaken for the purpose

setting up Education Lab, Computer Training, English Learning through the use of Tab & TV,

organizing an Extra Day of class, organizing Remedial Classes, extension of Village Meetings

into Partying with Parents, starting of Night/Evening Studeny Centres etc.

Madhyamik Exam: 13 students of the Trust appeared for the Class X West Bengal Board

Exam (Madhyamik) and 10 of them passed. Ms. Lalita Murmu of Amkhai Village, secured first

division marks with letter in Life Science. She is the first student from the entire Chuapahari

jungle area to score First Division Marks. Lalita also participated in a Recitation competition in

the Annual Youth Convention organized by Ramkrishna Mission Institute of Culture Goal Park

where she recited the poem “Kali the Mother’’ and was appreciated by all the audiences. She

was facilitated on behalf of Ramkrishna Mission, Goalpark.

SHORT STAY HOME FACILITIES FOR THE STUDENTS OF STANDARD X

To render special services for the students of standard X (Madhyamik) the trust has been taking

extra care by providing short stay home facilities with special coaching for 3 to 4 months to the

run up to the exam. In 2016 14 students of Nayantara will appear in Madhyamik Exam, of these

14, 6 are boys & rest of them are girls. The arrangement for girls’ accommodation has been

initiated in Raipur Project Office premises, whereas for boys it has been organized in Daranda

Field Office premises of the trust.

HEALTH CHECK UP CAMP FOR THE CHILDREN & MOTHERS

The trust has been organizing a number of health check up camps in association with Panagarh

Lions Club for some time. On 29th of November 2015 the Medical

Check Up Camp was conducted at Khayerdanga Supportive

Education Centre & the targeted villages for the said above groups

were Khayerdanga, Jambuni, Amkhai, Purandhil & Laxmipur. Total

number of patients registered for check up in the camp was 156 of

which 97 were little kids Some necessary medicine also provided

free of cost in the camp by the help of Lions’ Club & East India

Health Check Up Camp at a glance

Trouser Distribution: In the month of October just before Puja Vacation trousers were distributed among the boys from AW to standard X, who are enrolled in the Supportive Education Program.

These trousers were made by the students of tailoring course initiated by the trust in joint venture with GRABUU (Gram Bangla Unnayan Udyog). Trousers were distributed among 117 boys of the

Supportive Education Program.

VILLAGE LEVEL MEETING: Village Level Meetings have always played an important role in

any Community Development Activity as it helps to interact with the villagers. The Trust has been conducting regular meetings with the villagers. During this year 15 village level meetings were conducted for the Education purpose only which was attended by 504 villagers.

TEACHERS’ MEETING

To prepare monthly planning, discussion on some specific issues related to the program, Policy

framing & implementation & also for mitigate various problems regular Teachers’ Meeting had conducted during the reporting period. Generally, the meeting had conducted once in the first week of every month & some other meeting had also organized for some specific purpose.

During this period total 16 Teachers’ Meeting had conducted & the total number of participant is 291.

TEACHERS’ TRAINING & WORK SHOP

During this period regular Teachers’ Training & Work Shop session were conducted. The

purpose of these sessions is to enhance the overall skill of the teachers’, so that they render

much better services in the field. In all 9 Work Shop Sessions & total 12 Teachers’ Training

Program were conducted during this period. The total number of participants in Work Shop

session was 151, where as the total number of Teachers’ Training program was 180.

TEACHERS’ CONVENTION

A Teachers’ Convention was organized by the Trust under the instructions of Ramakrishna

Mission, Institute of Culture, Golpark on the 10th of October 2015 at about 1.30 p.m. after lunch

at the field office of the Trust in village Daronda in Illambazar block of Birbhum district. The

Convention was presided over by Rev Ekavratananda ji Maharaj of Belgharia Ramakrishna

Mission. The subject of the convention was “Role Of Teachers In Building Ideal Nation

Like India In The Eyes Of Swami Vivekananda”. Prof. Sabujkoli Sen, Sri Jiban

Bandopadhyay and Dr. K. C. Sahoo were the other speakers.

Invitation for the convention was extended to over 60 Educational Institutions of Illamabzar and

Bolpur Block including the faculties of Viswa Bharati University. A total of 135 persons from over

36 organizations attended the convention. The convention was the first of its kind in the area

and has not only generated interest but also strong request for conducting similar conventions

on regular basis.

The lectures by the speakers were followed by a discussion and Question & Answer session

where the panelists replied to the questions and thoughts of the participants. At the end of this

session the vote of thanks was delivered by the Managing Trustee of the Trust, Sri Sudip

Majumdar. The convention ended with the closing song sung by Rev Swami Ekavratananada ji

Maharaj.

SURVEY

The Trust conducted a survey across its project area to evaluate the effect of the Supportive

Education Program which the Trust had been carrying on since 2008. The survey was

conducted in the two clusters namely Rangabandh and Khayerdanga.

LIVELIHOOD & HEALTH

The Trust undertook a 3 years DST (Department of Science and Technology) sponsored

Livelihood project titled “Sustainable Livelihood Through Capacity Building and Technological Empowerment” for the Schedule Caste community. Under the project 76 BPL SC families of Daronda village and 102 BPL SC families of Srichandrapur village were direct beneficiaries. The

objective of the project was to improve the earning capability through increasing the awareness of the changing realities, specifically by addressing the following aspects

• Education – towards reduction in the school dropouts.

• Health, Sanitation and safe drinking water • Nutrition garden

• Income generation

• Poor soil health and agriculture productivity. • Irrigation water scarcity and

• Problems related to cooking fuel.

Progress of activities against approved work –plan of the project summarized as follows

i) Addressing aspects of education:

• Construction of community center (one in each village) – As mentioned earlier construction of Community shed for both the target villages (Daranda and Srichandrapur) was completed. One supportive education centre at Srichandrapur village and Adult literacy centre at Daranda village were running at the shed premises. Beside

these shed is utilized by the community for different meetings especially for SHGs and other community need.

• Selection of students from the target community - In both the target village in the current session (2015-16) no dropout students have been reported till now.

• Introducing supportive Education Systems - At present Daranda supportive education centre has 29 students and whereas Srichandrapur supportive education centre has 45 students. On 6th Feb, 2016 an annual sports programme was organized with the students of supportive education centres of both villages jointly in Daranda village play

ground as extracurricular activity for the students.

• Under T-E-A-C-H programme of Sakshar Bharat Mission with the help of Rotary Club of Kolkata Megacity to sensitize the educational awareness first batch of 23 students had appeared in the exam. The Second batch appeared in the exam on the 20th March. 2016. 24 adult female took the exam. In all 47 adults non-literate were made literate in

the course of the year.

ii) Promotion of health and sanitation including safe drinking water:

• Ten Medical Camps were organized during the period (April, 2015 to January, 2016).

• On the 23rd September 2015 a diagnostic medical camp was organized at Srichnadrapur with the help two mother and child care specialist of “St. Mary's Child and Mother Health Care Centre” at Makarampur, Bolpur.

• On 12th Dec, 2015, Winter Kit (One blanket, one mosquito net, one sleeper set, first aid box and monkey cap packed in a luggage bag) were distributed to 55 aged of Daranda and Srichandrapur by Rotary Club of Garden Reach, Kolkata.

• In all 10 health checkup camp have covered 300 beneficiaries.

• Water testing report of second phase has come and people were made aware through village level and SHG meetings and informed not to use the water of affected sources for

drinking purpose.

• On 12th January, 2016 training on water filter production was done at the office premises with help of a resource person from Silpa Sadana, Palli Samgathana Vibhaga, Visva Bharati University, Sriniketan. A group of 11 young boys from the project villages received the training on use, benefits and fitting of water filter along with repairing.

Soon after training is over they were assigned with the responsibility of distribution after assembling the filters as a part of entrepreneurial activity.

• The water filter distribution was initiated and a total of 105 beneficiaries covered from two target villages under this activity.

iii) Introduction of Nutrition Garden:

In the year (2015-16) seeds were distribute through SHGs and villagers were encouraged

to prepare vegetable gardens for family consumption and surplus for sale. 5 SHGs were

covered under this initiative.

iv) Introducing programmes for income generation:

• Tailoring: During training conducted by tailor master Rabi Saha from Sonarpur Kolkata (passed from National Institute of Fashion and technology). The trainees learnt to make

shirts, pants, skirts, frocks, salwars and kameej, etc. products produce were placed in Santiniketan Push Mela stall December,2015

• Horticulture: Two main horticultural plots have been developed, one in each village. Beneficiaries are selling the produce on their own initiative. They were earning from fruits as well as from intercrops harvested from the same field.

• Food Processing: A 15days awareness program on food processing was conducted from 4th April, 2015 to 19th April, 2015 under the supervision of Agricultural Marking Officer, Government of West Bengal, North Kolkata Mr. Tarun Kumar Jana. 16 varieties

of products were prepared during the training period. 40 women members from different SHGs of Two target villages have received the training. Products produced during the period have sold by the trainees it-self. Latter on a group of 5 members were formed to

manage the whole process of produce and sale of food processing activity.

• Water filter production: Local material with very simple technology was used in production of low cost water filters. 10 youths from two villages received training & 5 of them are continuing the activity. The youths have been given the responsibility of collection of parts, assembling and distribution to the beneficiaries.

v) Improvement in soil health conditions and agricultural productivity:

• The beneficiaries have introduced vermin-compost unit are using organic fertilizer as mix with chemical fertilizer, now gradually become part of practice of farmers.

• Soil health card was prepared with the initiative of ADA (Additional Directorate of Agriculture) Illambazar.

• On the 10th June, 2015 an awareness programme on pest control to raise crop yield was organized at the field site of Srichandrapur with farmers. Mrs. Nandita Bhattacharya,

ADA Illambazar as technical resource person led the session. DD National of Santiniketan team made the video recording and telecast the same. 25 farmers from the village

attented the programme.

vi) Managing irrigation, water scarcity:

• Introduction of vegetables instead of paddy to reduce the water loss has been partial adopted by 10 farmers of Srichandrapur.

• SRI in the summer season adopted by 5 beneficiaries of Srichandrapur village as a measure to reduce the use of under-ground water in their own initiative.

GRABUU-NAYNATARA INITIATIVE:

The initiatives taken under the GRABUU – NAYANTARA INITIATIVE in Birbhum can be classified into two

sections namely

1. Santhal Para

2. Kora Para

The intervention in Santhal Para of Illambazar had started in the year 2012 while that in Kora Para of

Raipur village under Bolpur sub division started only last year. Hence the activities undertaken under

this joint initiative would be grouped below in the two above mentioned sections separately.

A Santhal Para

I. Education

1. Education Lab: The concept of Education Lab was initiated under the joint initiative in 2014. Books, TLMs, Educative Games, Projector, Computers & Laptops, and various measuring instruments to measure Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, etc have been added to the Lab and are

being regularly used by the children to enhance their learning skills.

2. Computer Training: The Computer Literacy Program was initiated by the Trust with the sponsorship from GRABUU almost over a year back. The teachers and community youths of the

Supportive Education Program were the first students as it was made mandatory for them to be Computer Literate. The program has subsequently been extended to the students who had appeared in Madhyamik exam 2015. So far 75 students have undertaken the course.

3. Tab-TV: The Tab-TV program under the joint sponsorship of of GRABUU and Abheda Foundation is meant to improve the quality of English amongst the students through the use of an English Learning Application developed by Abheda Foundation. The Application runs of Tabs, sponsored by Abheda and is being currently used by the students of the Trust.

4. No Child Left Behind (One day extra class): In order to supplement the efforts on education front under the Jamsetji Tata Trust sponsored Supportive Education Program whereby the children are provided 5 days free coaching a week, GRABUU sponsored additional day of coaching, i.e. the 6th day in a week. From the Month of April 2015 the one extra working day for Education Centers has been included in the Supportive Education Program.

5. Remedial Classes for the weak students: The relatively weak students were subjected to a special 20 days (40hours) Remedial Class during the vacation time. In all 87 students benefited

from this program. The students were evaluated at the beginning of the program and again at the end of the 20 days session and were found to show definite improvement. But such session needs to carried out more frequently to have a long lasting effect.

6. Partying With Parents: With the Village level Meeting an innovative concept, namely “Partying With Teachers’ & Parents’ `` has been included with the program. This program is like a village level meeting, where the representative of the teachers, parents & students participate in the program. During the period 3 such events were organized with a total participation of 187 people including students,

guardians and teachers.

7. Night/Evening Study Center: It has been observed that in the villages of Choupahari Jungle most of the students are not habituated of self studying or sitting down with their books at home

in the evening. Lack of habit of studying at home results in the absence of a concept called “Home Work” which is an essential component of education. To grow the habit of self study among the students, a joint venture of GRABUU & Nayantara initiative, was undertaken from the month of September 2015 when an evening study center was started at Aamkhoi Village in

Choupahari Jungle.

8. Lets’ Play Chess : The game of Chess was introduced amongst the children from class V to X with a view to help them develop their analytical and logical thinking. This was one of the many

activities undertaken for the purpose.

9. Sahayika Sevika: Ms. Raimoni Baski, Ms. Sarathi Mardi, Ms. Chandmoni Mardi & Ms. Sundori Hembram the students’ attached with the trust since their livelihood had

appeared in the entrance exam conducted by Ramkrishna Sarada Mission, Matri Sadan for one year Sahayika Sevika Course in this year 2015. All the four were successful in the exam & were selected to participate in the course which started in the month of October

2015.

II. Livelihood

1. Dhenki CHaat Chaal

The beneficiaries are performing this activity as an additional source of income. Tress was given

on seasonal production. This year two varieties of rice were produced. Sale is ongoing from stock

in hats through SHGs.

2. Goatery

The goatery project which was initiated in the previous year and various steps were undertaken

to take the project forward. There have been some causalities lately due to the spread of PPR

(Peste-des-Petits Ruminants) disease. Strong steps have been taken to address the same in

collaboration with the local Block Livestock Development Officer (BLDO). The immediate effect of

the steps taken has resulted in restricting the spread of disease. 12 goats are currently pregnant.

As expert said that there is a need of healthy buck for better breeding performance.

3. Vermicompost

As a part of GRABUU – NAYANTARA initiative Vermicompost program was started. In

Srichandrapur village where production started with 4 beneficiaries, now has 8 beneficiaries.

4. Poultry

Presently 17 beneficiaries now have 42 improved variety chicks. Hanku Hembram has 30 chicks

which around 200 eggs. These eggs were either consumed or sold within village. 4 of the

beneficiaries are trying to produce chicks by hatching eggs of improved one and become

successful. One of the beneficiaries has sold 4 chicks and earned Rs.1200.

5. Muri Machine

This machine has been installed in Amkhai village. A group of puffed rice unitis formed. The

group has constructed a shed made of mud in their own labour contribution. Production has

started from 19 June 2015. Responsibility of detail record keeping is given to the group.

6. Tailoring: The tailoring program was initiated with 10 trainees. In over the last couple of years 3 more

batches of 10 each were started. Owing to various personal problems of the trainees there were

many dropouts. 4 of the trainees who undertook the training are making a part time earning of

Rs.700/- to Rs.1000/- per month.

Apart from the GRABUU project some other programs undertaken with the FCRA funds are

namely:

1. IDRF project under which Education, Community Development & Students Welfare programs

were undertaken. Education expenses of some poor and needy students was mainly sponsored

under this program;

2. UTSOV Inc sponsored the expenses of the Madhyamik students for their special classes and the

residential facility provided by the Trust;

3. Vivek Jyoti program was also meant for the Community Welfare and Education Welfare activities.
