219Marxism is also a science. So the comparison is being made with natural sciences, where new discoveries have led tore-examination o undamental concepts. Tis comparison overlooks the qualitative distinction between the natural andsocial sciences. Te distinct character o the latter is their class partisanship. While social acts are part o objective reality,the process o identiying them and seeking out truth, as well as the extent to which truth can be synthesised, are intimately

bound up with class stand. Whether something claimed as new is really new is itsel a matter o class struggle, in theory aswell as in practice.All o this rules out a simple extension o the methods o natural sciences into the re-examining o Marxistpositions. (Socialist, emphasis added, op. cit.) Lenin stated, in modern society the latter [political economy] is asmuch a partisan science as is epistemology. (Materialism and Emperio-criticism, Chapter 6.4, LCW 14, words in squarebrackets added. ) Further on, Mao drew attention to the role o ideology in aid-ing or preventing the acquisition o knowledge even in the natural sciences. He noted, As or the natural sciences, thereare two aspects. Te natural sciences as such have no class nature, but the question o who studies and makes use o themdoes.(Beat Back the Attacks o the Bourgeois Rightists, MSW 5, pages 460-1.)

For instance, my views on the methodological implications o the qualitative di-erence between the two realms is twisted around to charge me with reusing the necessity o re-examining undamentalprinciples in the social sciences. Te diverse fields o material reality studied by the naturalsciences themselves exhibit various levels o possible precision. But this does not negate the qualitative difference in thismatter between the natural and social sciences.
