out the evening. This will be a GREAT event for mothers, daughters, and teens through 50s who are looking for cut-ting edge styles. Men, don’t be discouraged to go to the store either. The merchandise in the store would make super Christmas gifts for your wives and daughters with plenty of assistance from the staff to help you find your way. Please look for the details of the event in the, “Around the Town” section of, Country Club Life and expect an electronic invita-tion from me in the coming days with all of the details. Well, that about does it for now folks. If I don’t speak with anyone before the holidays, have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! For those that do not celebrate Christmas, may all of your hopes and wildest dreams come true in the new year! Be safe! Sincerely,

Dear Country Club Residents, The last month of the year … December. Where in the heck did the year go? It seems like yesterday the sun was blazing hot and it was grill time. Then the leaves started to fall and the air was crisp and clean. Now, we’re talking about snow on the ground and the holiday season … geez! The good news is that the holidays are right around the cor-ner. For me this means Christmas at home with my Dad, really great food, and lots of football. After all this time, one would think that things might have changed but they have not. These are some of the best times because they are spent with family and friends, the two groups with whom I never tire. While it is certain there is always running around and shopping to do during this time of year, when everything is said and done it seems it was all worth it. Speaking of shopping, on December 3, 2015, from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. there will be a “Girls Night Out” gathering at the new store in Valley West Mall called, Apricot Lane Bou-tique. The experience will feature really cool clothes for sale with a 20 percent discount for the women of Country Club! It will also include some refreshments and raffles through-

Home Matters

We recently had the unfortunate circumstance of removing another pine tree from our backyard. (Thank you Wittmer's for your help with that!) Removing of established trees seems to be such a common theme in this neighborhood lately. It makes me so frustrated. By the looks of it, we have several more on their way out. Disposing of all that pine wood seems like such a waste, I keep wondering if there is something we can do with it. I have always heard you are not supposed to burn pine in an outdoor fireplace due to the creosote buildup, so other than dis-posing of it in the landfill or in your friend's farm pond for fish habitat what on earth do you do with it?

Well, after some pondering I decided to use it in an outdoor flower arrangement for the front stoop. I know that sounds a bit crazy but it didn't turn out too bad! I used a large wide flat cut piece of log for a sturdy base and then drilled a large hole in the center of a skinnier log vertically for a wood vase. If your logs or branches are dry enough you could seal the edges with a coat or two of polyurethane so they will last longer. After I got the hole in the log the right diameter and depth (which took some time) I was able to arrange my flowers and pumpkins on the log in

the wire urn. I used some decorative excelsior to hide the plastic stems in the log hole. Voila!!!Happy creating!

Molly’s MusingsA Resident’s Perspective: DON’T RUSH!

The month of December is upon us, and don’t you dare forget it. At least that’s the message I’m getting from my chain e-mails, from the decorations streaming and gleaming from the ceilings of the grocery store, and from the constant flow of holiday cards in my mailbox. Don’t get me wrong; I love this time of year. Every emotion seems a bit heightened. The chill in the air and the coming end to another year makes everything more exciting. There’s something to chattering teeth, flushed cheeks, and being able to see your breath on the air. It makes December and the closing of the year fun and fulfilling. It’s these little things and the people we spend our time with when they happen that make up the reason for the season.

It’s not the constant reminders that I mind. No, I enjoy some garland about the automatic doors at the mall. I appreciate the glittering giant snowflakes glinting in fluorescent lighting at the grocery store. The holiday music on loop in commercials always makes me smile. The cozy ambi-ance, cheery atmosphere, and chilly envi-ronment are all beautiful things. Rather, I do not know exactly how I feel about the

premature inclusion of all this merriment.I’m sure you know what I mean. As I stroll through the store with my shopping cart laden with pumpkins, fall foliage décor, and my Roaring Twenties flapper costume, without fail I always end up walking through an aisle I never antici-pated: the winter holiday aisle. Looking for more Halloween candy, I find myself surrounded by Santa hats, boxes of string-lights, stuffed penguins and polar bears, and a generally swirling, twirling winter wonderland. This seems a bit early to me.

Children can be seen and heard stum-bling about in their zombie masks or zooming around in their superhero capes and squealing excitedly in the store. While this is ongoing, I’m gazing in won-derment at the winter wonderland before me. Monster masks next to menorahs? Care Bear costumes by Christmas trees? Is this the new order of holidays? Hal-loween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christ-mas, and Kwanzaa rolled into one?

I love the holiday season. But I like it because it’s spread out. I can enjoy myself for months, not just a couple of weeks. I

get to overeat, overspend, and overindulge in every way for the last three months of the year. I can languish in each one: the netherworld of fun on Halloween, the overstuffed joy of Thanksgiving, the giving splurge that runs the latter half of December. I like to take my time with my holidays. Why the rush to include Hanukkah with Halloween? Christmas with Thanksgiving? I look forward to this all year. I want to relish in each season and each individual holiday—not get a package deal with all of them together.

I know we’ve reached the end of this year, so Halloween and Thanksgiving have long gone. But for the remaining days of this month, just remember to enjoy it all. Don’t rush. Relish in the time with family and friends because it is all too fleeting. Before you know it, it’ll be next year, and we’ll be bundling New Years, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. If, that is, the Mayans let us survive 2012. So, on second thought, just enjoy your holiday season as best you can. I’ll see you next year. Hopefully.

Interesting Facts…

Has your furnace been roaring this winter?

Well, did you know?David Lennox was an American inventor and businessman. A furnace manufacturing business he founded in 1895 in Marshalltown helped to develop what has been described as the first riveted-steel furnace. His contributions to furnace design have been described as significant steps forward in durability and efficiency of furnaces commonly in use near the end of the 19th century.

Lennox was born in Detroit but moved to Marshalltown July, 1881, where he initially was hired by the Iowa Steel Wire Com-pany to make barbs for their fencing. He fabricated a custom machine to cut the steel barbs and soon afterwards started his own blacksmith and machine shop.

In 1895, Ernest Bryant and Ezra Smith, two Oskaloosa busi-nessmen talked to Lennox about plans for a furnace using riveted steel for the heating surface. The furnaces used to heat

homes at that time were made entirely of cast iron, which had a tendency to warp and crack after extended use and could cause smoke and coal gases to seep into houses.

Bryant, Smith, and Lennox entered into an agreement in which Lennox made the iron castings used for the grates, fronts, and other parts of their steel furnaces. When Bryant and Smith were unable to pay Lennox for the iron castings after losing their financial backing, Lennox took over their patents, reworked their original design and marketing the furnaces under his own Torrid Zone brand name.

Lennox' furnace business grew and became a success. Lennox sold his furnace business in 1904 to a group of local Marshall-town businessmen, led by David Windsor (D.W.) Norris, a local business and civic leader and owner of the local newspaper. According to company records, the sales price was $57,789.14.

Dave Lennox died at his home in Marshalltown in 1947, at the age of 91.

Your Name: Nawal GhaliYour profession: I am an Artist and Spiritual Director. How long have you been creating art? Looking back I can say I was always interested in creating art; making things has always given me pleasure, but in 2005 it be became my focus.

What do you love most about art? Art allows me to express myself. It gives me a voice into the world. I am the hap-piest and most peaceful when I am creat-ing. Making art centers me and helps me be in touch with my truest self. When I create I connect with my feelings, thoughts and body, which translates into colors, strokes and images. It is an essen-tial process for my health and wellbeing and expresses my interior journey.

What prompted you to become an artist? From an early age I loved color. After the kids left home something deep within me propelled me to seek a medium for my artistic expression. I decided to explore some classes at the Art Center. I took pottery and loved it. Then I enrolled in a pastels class, just to see if I would enjoy it as much. I loved it even more. The instruc-tor was excellent and worked with me to teach me some of the basics. At the end of the 13-week session she said, “Where have you been for the last 20 years?” That comment encouraged me to pursue more classes. As I explored more mediums, I started to discover my love for abstract painting, which launched my search for an abstract mentor. My search lead me to Marianne Mitchell an accomplished art-ist from Philadelphia who currently lives in Denver. She offered on-line classes and

Nawal Ghali – Country Club Resident

MEET YOURneighborson-site workshops and I took advantage of both. In 2014, I spent the month of February in Denver while I participated in her extensive month-long mentorship pro-gram. After the immersion period I was deeply convinced that making art daily is my passion. On my return to Des Moines I had my first show, which was very well attended and more successful than I could have dreamed. I sold 24 paintings out of the 27 that I had on display.

I am currently working on expanding my studio and will have a grand opening and show in November 2015.

What art forms do you love most? I love variety and I enjoy trying new and different things. I mostly do abstract paintings in a large range of sizes ranging from 5in x 5in pastels to 6ft by 4ft acryl-ics and oils.

Given your artistic background and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether general or specific) can you offer to others who would like to explore their own artistic sides?I would encourage anyone to pursue cre-ativity in whatever form that resonates with his or her soul. There are a great variety of classes that are being offered at the art center, the community college and many private studios around town. I would encourage anyone to experiment and experience a variety of creative avenues until a spark ignites your passion. Every human being is created to be creative and participate in the collective creative energy that surround us. We are created to create, and until we engage that need we sense absence that needs to be quenched.

What section of the neighborhood do you live in and how long have you lived in the neighborhood? I live on the Lakeview drive, and we back up to the lake. We bought our house in 1993; it was one of the houses in the 1992 home show.

Where did you grow up? My husband Magdi and I grew up in Cairo, Egypt.

Tell us about your family:Magdi and I have been married for 38 years. We immigrated to the US in 1979. He is a cardiologist with the Iowa Heart Center. We like biking together on the city’s great bike trails; we enjoy travel-ing and spending time with friends over good food and engaging in conversation on things that matter. Our three children,

Monica, Marcia and Mark, have been a blessing to us. They were 7, 9 and 11 years of age when we moved to the Country Club area. Monica earned her BA degree from Taylor University in Indiana and held a street educator position with a non-profit organization in Lima, Peru for six years. Now she is embarking on a second career in nursing. She will start her accelerated-nursing program at Johns Hopkins spring of 2016. Marcia and her husband, Jon, live in Omaha, NE. Marcia earned her Mas-ters of Social Work and works as a mental health therapist. Jon is studying architec-tural engineering. They are expecting their first baby in March of 2016. This is our first grandchild! We are very excited! Mark and Leah live in Minneapolis with their feisty kitty Pepper. Mark works as a facility super-visor at an IT asset recycling company and spends his free time fixing computers and playing frisbee. Leah recently finished her master's degree in social work. She works as a clinical social worker in an outpatient mental health treatment program. They enjoy good beer, food and movies together!

Do you have any other hobbies/interests? I also love being on the beach; it is a source of great inspirations. I enjoy mak-ing silk scarves with permanent dyes. Gardening, biking, strength training, yoga, and pilates are activities that I incorporate in my daily life.

According to recent studies, approximately 68% of people are bothered by submental fullness (“dou-ble chin”). Of these people, 7.2 million are actively seeking a solution to reduce their “double chin.” Recently, quadruple board certified plastic surgeon David Robbins, MD, FACS, has introduced ground-breaking treatments for “double chin” to meet the growing demand of consumers.

Des Moines Plastic Surgery and Healthy Skin & Laser Center is a noted premier facility in Central Iowa providing options in both sur-gical and non-surgical procedures for patients who are seeking their best choices for “double chin.”

COOLSCULPTINGThe new CoolMini from CoolSculpting is one of the safest and most effective treatments available, and is found only at Des Moines Plastic Surgery and Healthy Skin & Laser Center, making it the first medical practice in Iowa and Nebraska to offer this state-of-the-art solution for “double chin.”

It is a specialized technique that freezes fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissues. Designed for small areas of fat, the applicator’s size, shape and curvature fits precise problem areas like “double chin.” Patients may see results as early as 3 weeks, with the most dramatic results observed 1-3 months following treatment. CoolSculpting is FDA approved for the abdomen, “love handles,” inner and outer thighs, and “double chin.”

KYBELLA™KYBELLA™ is the first and only FDA-cleared “injectable” treatment that contours and improves the appearance of “double chin.” The active ingredient in KYBELLA™ is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in

the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA™ causes lysis of adipocytes, the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Dr. David Robbins is the first to offer KYBELLA™ in Iowa.

LASER LIFTa. Laser Lift offers a technologically advanced option for non-surgical facial rejuvenation in just 30 minutes. The Laser Lift provides outstanding results and reduces many signs of aging including sagging skin and jowls, “double chin,” and loss of jaw-line definition.

With local numbing, tiny incisions are made where thermally controlled laser energy is delivered under the skin to stimu-late collagen production in the dermis while simultaneously melting away any fat in the neck area. Dr. David Robbins is currently the first and only plastic surgeon in Iowa to offer the Laser Lift procedure.

As you can see there are a number of procedures available to fulfill your individual needs. To discuss these options, please visit Des Moines Plastic Surgery and Healthy Skin & Laser Center - all consultations are complimentary! Call our office at 515.221.9999 or email [email protected] and schedule today!

I absolutely love this recipe during the winter months. So much so, I think my husband gets sick of it by the end of the season (which is surprising for an Irishman). I prefer ground lamb to the ground beef, but not everyone is the lamb lover I am.

It can be made the night before, which is great for weeknight dinner.

What does it mean to be retired? It depends on whom you ask.Retirement means different things to different people, but most agree that freedom is high on the list. You’re free to reinvent your life – and you’ll want your income to keep pace. That’s why it’s so important to work with a financial advisor. As you approach retirement, he or she can help you stay on track to live the life you want.

Article source: www.edwardjones.comArticle intended for informational purposes only

and is not a substitute for professional advice.

Your Retirement Your WayTo get started, here are a few questions to think about for your-self or discuss with your loved ones:

How will leaving the workforce make you feel? Some people say they can’t wait to leave work; others are a little fearful. Be realistic about how you feel.

What would you like to achieve during your retirement? For many, retirement means freedom to share their time, tal-ents and treasure. Your financial advisor can help you develop a strategy to pay for your retirement today and leave a legacy for tomorrow, if that’s your goal.

Are there any financial roadblocks to your retirement vision? Part of working toward your personal retirement goals is thinking through the “what ifs” and how to overcome any roadblocks. Your financial advisor can play a valuable role in this process because he or she knows what’s important to you and your family.

How will your retirement affect your family? Will you fill your calendar with volunteer activities or that household to-do list – or both? Do you want to babysit the grandkids every other weekend? Share your retirement vision with your spouse and children to help ensure everyone is on the same page

Are you looking for some appetizers that won’t tip the scale this holiday season? Skip the processed foods, sugary sweets, calorie-laden cocktails, and get back to the basics: nuts, fruit and seafood.

Written by N2 Staff Writer Elizabeth McCabe

HolidayH E A L T H Y

PARTYF O O D I D E A S

GET NUTS OVER NUTSLooking for an easy appetizer this holiday season that won’t add to your waistline? Consider nuts. The options are endless with these protein-packed sources of goodness. Wow your guests with spicy party nuts, tempt them with cinnamon and chili powder roasted almonds, or remind them of the holiday season with roasted chestnuts. Nosh on nuts and help your heart along the way. Nuts contain omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower the risk for arrhythmias, and are also full of fiber, which helps lower cholesterol. Don’t pass on the pecans either. A Journal of Nutrition study documented that you can lower your LDL cholesterol levels by as much as 33 percent by eating pecans. Not to men-tion preventing plaque formation in your arteries. Who would have guessed?

FORGET NOT THE FRUITMaybe the fruitcake wasn’t such a bad idea for the holidays. But why not capture the nutri-ents of fruit by eating it whole. Dunk strawberries in dark chocolate, skewer fruit for colorful creations of kabobs, treat yourself to roasted grapes, or indulge in baked apples with cin-namon. Or go all out by whipping up a berry smoothie or serve up a grapefruit mocktail – grapefruit juice with sparkling water.

Do yourself a favor by feasting upon fruit. Consider grapefruit – adding this to your diet can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes by decreasing insulin resistance. Arm yourself with apples. Not only can this fiber-filled fruit reduce your LDL cholesterol, it can also help you lose weight. Or eat strawberries to reduce your

risk of esophageal cancer.

SAVOR SEAFOODThe holidays are a cause for celebration. Why not crack open the crab legs, break out the shrimp cocktail, sample

baked maple soy salmon, or indulge in oysters? Or satisfy your longing for lobster with lobster

chili or lobster bake? Seafood has its own nutritional benefits. Be selfish with your shellfish. Crab contains chromium, which can improve blood sugar metabolism. It also is a good source for Vitamins A,

C, B12, as well as zinc and copper. Not a crab fan? Snack on shrimp. Shrimp is

an excellent source of selenium, which can help protect you from cancer. And for all those

counting their carbs (or watching their blood glucose level) this holiday season, shrimp is a sound choice. The Glycemic Index rating for shrimp is zero; shrimp

also contains no carbohydrates. But don’t leave out the salmon either. This protein-packed fish delivers a number

of health benefits: omega-3 fatty acids, iron, Vitamin D, and can even reduce your risk of macular degeneration.

So don’t pig out this holiday season. Eat better and feel better. Maximize the nutrients in food by serving healthy holiday party food. Your scale will thank you next month when you’re starting those New Year’s resolutions!
