CHEMERONG RECREATIONAL FOREST AND WATERFALL

Chemerong Recreational Forest and Waterfall, the highest vertical waterfall in Terengganu, is located 100 km away from Kuala Terengganu and 30 km from Bandar Al-Muktafi Billah Shah in the district of Dungun, it thunders magnificently down a 305 m vertical fall which offers yet untouched and diverse riches of nature and wildlife. Take a plunge and enjoy the tranquility of this green wilderness with lush green unspoiled pools. Mountain climbing up Mount Berembun through the dense foliage is an adventure worth experiencing.

How to get there Chemerong Waterfall is located next to Kampung Cenerih in Hulu Dungun. From Kuala Terengganu, travel south using the new highway and exit at Kampung Jongok Batu junction. Chemerong Recreational Park is the starting point to the waterfall and Mount Berembun.

SEKAYU AGRICULTURAL PARK AND WATERFALL

Sekayu Recreational Forest is only an hour’s drive from Kuala Terengganu and 15 km from Kuala Berang. The Sekayu Waterfall is right at the fringe of highland where the rushing waters create a seven tier waterfall. The pools, the cascading waterfalls and the foliage surroundings create the perfect ambience for visitors to relax and rejuvenate. The surrounding area is also well-equipped with picnic spots, resting huts, camping sites and chalets. The latest attraction here is an 85 acre State Agricultural Park, a beautifully landscaped area which offers tropical fruit orchards, restaurant, swimming pool, mini zoo, children playground and camping grounds, among others.

How to get there From Kuala Terengganu, take the route to Bukit Payong via Wakaf Tapai and Pekan Ajil. From there, upon reaching the junction before Bandar Kuala Berang, turn left for another 15 km of travel to Sekayu Agricultural Park and waterfall.

LASIR WATERFALL

Lasir Waterfall, located 16 km from Pengkalan Gawi, is one of the most popular picnic spots in Tasik Kenyir. With a majestic fall of some 500 feet, Lasir drops gracefully onto a multi-tiered level of boulders and rocks forming cooling cascading showers and foaming white sprays of water. This waterfall, is well shaded by the leafy green canopy of the surrounding tropical rainforest. Tracks and walkways have been built and climbing up to the top offers spectacular breathtaking views.

How to get there Lasir Waterfall is accessible by a 30 minute boat ride to the south of Pengkalan Gawi Jetty.

LATA TEMBAKAH RECREATIONAL FOREST AND WATERFALL

The Lata Tembakah Recreational Forest, 118 km north of Kuala Terengganu is a tourist destination which holds the promise of a peaceful encounter with nature at its most serene. Lata Tembakah is a 7-tiered thunderous waterfall that flows majestically through the rainforest. Visitors could climb to the highest cascading water for a splendid sight. Ample parking spaces, food stalls, wooden walkways, jungle treks, gazebos, chalets and camp grounds are some of the facilities provided.

How to get there Lata Tembakah Waterfall is clearly signposted and can be reached 25 km south of Jertih. Coming from Kuala Terengganu which is 118 km north, a shortcut is possible by taking the T142 route near Kampung Jabi with signage to lead the way.

LATA BELATAN RECREATIONALFOREST AND WATERFALL

Far from hustle and bustle of the city, Lata Belatan Recreational Forest and Waterfall is located 100 km north of Kuala Terengganu. It’s cool clear streams and the sound of cascading waters are soothing enough to entice visitors to dip in its pools. This waterfall is an ideal picnic spot among locals especially during weekends and school holidays. Here, camp grounds, changing rooms, food stalls and ample parking space are available.

How to get there Lata Belatan is located 100 km north of Kuala Terengganu or 24 km south of Jertih. It is the base camp for mountain climbers looking for thrill and adventure conquering Gunung Tebu.

LA HOT SPRING

La Hot Spring is a situated 140 km north of Kuala Terengganu. Its natural hot water pool originates from deep under the ground and seeps through cracks creating a pool with a temperature ranging from 50 - 75 degrees Celsius. The therapeutic hot water contains sulphur which is believed to have healing properties for nerve ailments, stroke, high blood pressure, paralysis and skin diseases. Man-made hot water pools for children and elders are built, along with toilets, chalets, food stalls, souvenir stalls, camp grounds and parking areas provided for visitors’ convenience.

How to get there La Hot Spring is clearly signposted and can be reached 28 km south of Jertih. Coming from Kuala Terengganu, it is 140 km north, a shortcut is possible by taking the T142 route near Kampung Jabi with signage to lead the way.

17TURTLE SANCTUARY

TURTLE INFORMATION CENTRE, RANTAU ABANG

Up until the late 80’s, Pantai Rantau Abang was made famous for being one of the six hatching sites in the world where giant leatherback turtles lay their eggs. Visitors from all over the world gathered here from May to September every year to watch this amazing spectacle.

Global contributing factors as well as rampant coastal development has led to a dwindling number of turtle landings in most parts of the world. From the late 1980’s up until 2000, the Fisheries Department recorded a reduced number of landings. Turtle hatchery sites have been set up as a conservation effort to ensure the survival of these endangered species.

How to get there Rantau Abang is located 22 km north of Kuala Dungun or 80 km south of Kuala Terengganu. There are local bus service from Kuala Terengganu as well as taxi services available either from Kuala Dungun or Kuala Terengganu.

MA’ DAERAH TURTLE SANCTUARY CENTRE

A little known haven in Terengganu, with 1.7 km of beach and 70 hectares of flat sandy plains is Ma’ Daerah in Kerteh in the district of Kemaman. This turtle nesting beach tucked between the towns of Kerteh and Paka is a gazetted area and a model turtle conservation centre for Malaysia. Apart from turtle hatchery management and monitoring of nesting females, other activities at this haven for turtle nesting include education and awareness, especially for the schoolchildren and community.

How to get there Ma’ Daerah is located between the towns of Kertih and Paka. You can either drive 116 km south from Kuala Terengganu to Kerteh town. It is better to notify the Turtle and Marine Eco Centre for a more informative visit.

TURTLE HATCHERY SITES IN TELUK MAK NIK BEACH

The Teluk Mak Nik Beach is located in Geliga, a 10 minute drive by car from Chukai town in the district of Kemaman. The beach is a preferred weekend getaway for locals to indulge in activities such as fishing, beach games and picnics. There are basic facilities such as gazebos, food stalls, souvenir shops, public toilets and children’s playground.

The major attraction of this lovely beach is its turtle sanctuary with rows of nests in the turtle hatchery sheds. Most of the turtles that land are Green Turtles and the best time to watch turtles laying eggs is between March and October.

How to get there Pantai Teluk Mak Nik is located in Geliga, Kemaman which is 150 km south from Kuala Terengganu. The beach is behind the The Institute of Public Administration (Institut Tadbiran Awam Malaysia). From the town of Chukai, it takes only 5 - 10 minutes by car to reach the beach.

CHAGAR HUTANG BEACH,MAK KEPIT, MAK SIMPAN AND PASIR BUJANG IN PULAU REDANG

There are many turtle sanctuaries and hatcheries in Terengganu which include Chagar Hutang Beach, Mak Kepit, Mak Simpan and Pasir Bujang on Pulau Redang.

How to get there The gazetted beaches are located on the northern part of Pulau Redang are under the jurisdiction of SEATRU (Sea Turtle Research Unit) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. There is no accommodation available but those interested could rent a boat from any of the resorts at Pantai Pasir Panjang upon authorization from the Fisheries Department.

The turtle conservation based at Chagar Hutang is managed by SEATRU (Sea Turtle Research Unit) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. Their duties includes studying these turtles, collecting & protecting eggs under incubation and monitoring of turtle nesting. A one-kilometre buffer zone is a gazetted shoreline to protect turtle-nesting areas.

SETIU WETLANDS

The Setiu Wetlands, part of the Setiu River Basin and the larger Setiu - Chalok - Bari - Merang basin wetland complex lies in Terengganu on Peninsular Malaysia’s east coast. Extending over 23,000 ha, it comprises riparian forests lining the riverbanks, freshwater melaleuca swamps, peat swamps, mangroves, brackish water lagoons with vegetated sand islands, seagrass beds and sandy beaches.

It is the only wetland in Malaysia with nine interconnected ecosystems - the sea, beach, mudflat, lagoon, estuary, river, islands, coastal forest and mangrove forest.

T h e s a n d y beaches, s a n d islands and riverbanks are nesting grounds for Malaysia’s largest breeding population of painted terrapin (Callagur borneoensis) and are amongst the few remaining mainland nesting sites for the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Both the painted terrapin and green turtle are endangered species.

29SETIU WETLANDS

Setiu’s natural wetland features and elements have considerable ecotourism potential. Suitable ecotourism activities may include nature observation on the unique wetland habitat and turtle nesting, honey harvesting in the Melalueca swamps and recreational fishing. Ecotourism can generate alternative incomes for local communities, who at present depend almost entirely on the fisheries sector for their livelihood.

How to get there Gong Batu and Pengkalan Gelap, located in Kampung Penarik, Setiu are the stopping points for visits to Setiu Wetlands. These places

are accessible within a 1 hour 15 minute drive north from

Kuala Terengganu.
