About the Seminar:

Youth for Sustainable Development (YSD) is a Non-Governmental Organization working in the rural areas with a mission to promote and disseminate information on environment friendly technologies, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management and modern technologies in agriculture. The organization is also protecting the interests of physically and mentally challenged children. YSD is promoting Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) in the field of Ayurveda and other traditional healing techniques. The main focus of the organization is rural development and upliftment of rural people by providing them access to basic amenities of life, i.e., health care, clean water, sanitation etc. The organization intends to increase the livelihood opportunities for rural youth by making them aware of the latest techniques in agriculture, horticulture, flouriculture agro-forestry and cultivation of herbs and medicinal plant.

“The Youth for Sustainable Development” (YSD) is of the view that the youth is a citizen of today. As such destined to play a participatory role in the national life of the country. In the existing struggle for life, the youth does not stand on a “pedestal”. Along with other sections of the society, youth also suffers from the same socio-economic stresses and strains. The “Youth for Sustainable Development,” therefore, holds that this distinct, independent social class of educated young citizens has a significant part to play in the revolutionary process of social change. The Youth for Sustainable Development also holds that this class if organized with a constructive approach will grow into a potent force for social change, which would undertake the responsibilities of reconstruction and at the same time fight and banish the forces of corruption and activities of anti social and anti-national elements.

Maharaja Agrasen University (MAU) derives its name from the revered Maharaja Agrasen. He was born during the last stages of the ‘Dwapar Yuga’ and he established the Kingdom of Agroha near Hisar in Haryana about 5000 years ago.

MAU is situated in the pollution free environment of Shivalik foothills near Kasauli and Pinjore Gardens. It is easily accessible from Chandigarh, Kalka and Delhi. MAU is sponsored by Maharaja Agrasen Technical Education Society (MATES), a pioneer in the field of technical and professional education. The mission of MATES is to serve society through imparting quality education at nominal cost. The society which pioneered in setting up Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology (MAIT) in 1999 and Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management Studies(MAIMS) in 2003 in Delhi. MAIT is rated as 21st Best Engineering College (including IITs and IIITs) by DATA QUEST survey in the year 2012. The society is headed by the eminent educationist Dr. Nand Kishore Garg who has a dynamic record of establishing several technical and professional institutions. The University is headed by Prof S.P. Bansal, the Vice-Chancellor, who is a familiar name in the field of management education.

The University has been incorporated through the Maharaja Agrasen (Establishment & Regulation) Act, 2012 (Act No 15 of 2013) passed by the Himachal Pradesh Government. The Engineering courses of Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, Himachal (MAIT, Himachal) have been approved by the AICTE. This recognition adds value to Engineering degrees awarded by MAIT, Himachal which is a constituent unit of MAU. All other academic programs like MBA, M.Sc. in Forensic Science, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Library Science, MHTA, BBA, BHM, B.com (Hons.) B.Com., B.Arch., BA LLB (Hons.), LLB, conducted by the University have requisite approval of the relevant regulatory authorities and statutory bodies of the centre and the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Sustainable management of our natural resources that sustain and flourish human life cannot be simply treated as a desirable goal in the present context but has become an imperative outcome in all endeavors and human actions. The mankind is facing the variety of threats due to dwindling land resource, shrinking water resources, exhausting mineral

resources and depleting bio-resources. This has been happening due to variety of reasons like non judicious use of these resources due to faulty techniques and extraction of these resources beyond the carrying capacity. The exploitation of all these resources beyond their regenerative capacity is leading to various hazards and disasters and the threat is more pronounced due to growing needs and aspirations of people. The natural resource management is congruent with the sustainable development that forms a basis for conservation and preservation of natural resources. Sustainability may be simply understood as the use of finite resources against the infinite demands in such a way that living conditions and resource-use meet human needs without undermining the sustainability of natural systems and the environment, so that the needs of future generations are not jeopardized. The concept of sustainable development has often been looked through the three constituent domains: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability.

The National Seminar aims at bringing together the researchers, engineers, academicians as well as industrial professionals from across the country to present their research results, besides development activities and modern technologies in natural resource management and its prospects. The seminar will provide a platform for the experts from various disciplines for looking and exploring the potentialities, problems and prospects of natural resources and the nature of mountain environments, their characteristic features, dominant processes and their significance to man.

The Seminar is aimed at providing a meeting ground for academicians, policy makers, research scholars, entrepreneurs, trade professionals, management professionals, social workers and activists and media people.

Papers can be presented in absentia in the conference by submitting the processing fee of Rs. 1500.The paper will be part of the conference proceedings.

Those who need accommodation must write/email to the Organizers in advance to enable the organizers to make arrangements. Accommodation will be arranged in the University Guest House/ Hotels/ Hostels.

Papers are invited for presentation during the Conference on any of the sub-themes. However, interested participants may also contribute quality research papers on any theme relating to natural resource management. The participants are requested to send the abstract (not less than 300 words) to the convener/Organizing Secretary, National seminar at Email & by 20th Feburary 2014 and full length paper by 5th March, 2014. Author(s) may submit their abstract(s) on A-4 size paper clearly typed in double space. Abstracts of only those papers will find place in the volume of abstracts of which full paper is received within due date. The participants are requested to send a copy of abstract preferably by email. The paper may be presented in English or Hindi. A hard and a soft copy of the full paper should reach the Organizing Secretary not later than 05th March 2014. The research papers shall be published in the proceedings volume of the conference.
