Focus on ITDC and C2 Slide 20 Defence Language Institute (DLI) DLI in Baghdad is Fully Operation Capable Capacity of 100 students/annum (non-intensive courses) Iraqi requirement for 400 students/annum (intensive) Air Force, Navy, pool for overseas training Short term demand - contractors NTM-I to develop DLI to meet future demand Novel approach may be required in the medium term Slide 21 Mission DLI is the top educational military organization committed to the pursuit of teaching languages to selected personnel both military and civilian within the MOD. It is the most important Institute to provide classes and keep-on-training to Interpreters who translate any kind of documents concerning international and Defence matters DLI fulfills the overarching governance structure on teaching languages in the subordinate institution of the National Defence University and sets doctrines and standards DLI Slide 22 History of DLI NTM-I Commander General D Petraws introduced the idea to build the DLI Jul 2005 DLI established 26 Jan 2006 Started in Feb 2006 First course started 1 Feb 2006 Till now 4 courses completed training in total 130 students Slide 23 DLI tasks Teach languages (not only English) to military and civilian personnel Prepare military and civilian personal for developing language skills Lead in language doctrine and standards development within the MOD and the Iraqi Armed Forces Develop and maintain database of all personnel trained Slide 24 Provide follow on training for interpreters and teachers Organize, control and evaluate language training in other military academies and abroad Prepare candidates for the National Defence University DLI tasks Slide 25 Current courses Pre-intermediate Intermediate Post-intermediate All courses duration of five months Non intensive courses Students have 4 hours of training per day Sunday through Wednesday, Thursday for homework Slide 26 English Language Training The requirement: - As many as possible to build a pool of candidates for various courses - Minimum of 815 per year in intensive training - Air Force - Pilot/Aviation Related Career Fields: 380 - Maintenance/Engineer: 120 - Intel Career Field: 135 - Others: 20 - 40 Naval officers and enlisted - 120 for various other requirements The standards: - Minimum of ECL score of 70 - Some higher requirements for special skills (i.e. pilots) How to achieve: - Must have combination of intensive and non-intensive training - One central hub at Iraqi DLI to manage entire program - Full-time intensive course at Iraqi DLI (minimum 20 hours per week plus homework) - Several part-time intensive courses at key locations (minimum 20 hours per week plus homework) - Several non-intensive courses at various other learning institutes Slide 27 English Language Training For Iraqi Armed Forces Iraqi DLI Baghdad Umm Qasr NAMAB Rustamiya TajiNAMAB IMARIMAQIMAZ Joint Staff College Intensive Course (20 hours per week, students have other training requirements) Non-Intensive Course Intensive Course (Minimum 20 hours per week plus homework, students devoted only to language training) 40 Students50 Students 130 Students Capacity for 370 in intensive courses - Less than the requirement!
