Back to the FutureI want to extend a special welcome to all trade show attendees on this 10th anniversary of NATO’s founding. In fact, we are holding the new NATO Show at the birthplace of NATO, the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino. At the same time that we will celebrate the organization’s first ten years, we will also give birth to a new branch of NATO, the inaugural NATO Show.

Some thirteen months ago the NATO Board of Di-rectors determined that it was in our best interest to start our own trade show rather than to continue to support an existing tobacco show. The directors made this decision based on a number of factors, but the pri-mary reasons were (1) the show itself would be of the highest quality resulting in a more rewarding experi-ence for attendees and (2) a show owned and operated by NATO would yield a greater financial contribution to NATO’s revenues to fund legislative efforts and re-lated activities.

Starting a new trade show was indeed a bold move, but then again making bold moves is nothing new to NATO.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the shows sponsors and exhibitors. You showed great confi-dence in NATO by signing up to participate in our in-augural show without any promises about attendance.

I want to also extend my appreciation to all of the retailers and wholesalers who chose to attend this trade show. I hope you will find that every aspect of the show was worth your time and money. I sincerely believe that you will find the educational sessions extremely valuable to helping you grow and improve your re-spective businesses as well as understanding the tobacco legislative and regulatory landscape. Finally, I trust that you will find the special deals on the trade show floor worthy of your purchase dollars.

We have arranged as our keynote speaker Dr. Lawrence Deyton, the Director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. The CTP’s tobacco rules and regulations have

the potential to significantly impact our industry and our businesses. I strongly encourage you to attend Dr. Deyton’s presentation on Thursday morning at 8:00 A.M. I believe we will all find Dr. Deyton’s remarks informative and insightful.

This show would not have been possible without the industry’s support. It also would not have been pos-sible without the extra special time and efforts of our trade show committee chairman, Steve Sandman, and our trade show manager, Greg Martin. NATO is eter-nally grateful to both of you.

Finally, this being our first trade show, I know we are not going to get everything right. Our organization has always benefitted from the comments and criticisms of our members, and if you see something that needs cor-recting, or have a suggestion that might help make our 2012 show even better, I encourage you to stop by the NATO booth on the trade show floor (Booth # 551), and give us your input.

Ultimately, you will tell us whether we achieved the objectives we hoped to achieve by having our own trade show. It is important that we hear from you.

Have a Great Show.

On behalf of the NATO board of directors, welcome to the NATO Show. One goal of this brand new show is to produce the highest quality educational seminars for tobacco retailers and wholesalers.

These exceptional educational opportunities in-clude the ability to listen to Dr. Lawrence Deyton, the new Director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, speak on pending and upcoming federal to-bacco regulations.

Besides Dr. Deyton’s presentation, educational opportunities at the NATO Show will include an in depth look at the NATO/CSP Tobacco Insider Report which surveyed retailers nationwide, a perspective on FDA regulation from a business point of view by an industry member of the FDA’s Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee, a 2011 tobacco legislative and regulatory update, and several sessions on trends in the industry and how to capitalize on these product trends.

In the time span of just two days, retailers and wholesalers will come away with a wealth of knowl-edge that they will be able to apply in their own busi-nesses as well as to be updated on the most current state and federal tobacco legislative issues.

NATO has earned a reputation as being a premier retail tobacco trade association that focuses exclu-sively on tobacco-related legislation and regulations. If you are a NATO member, we appreciate your continued support of the organization by your at-tendance at our new trade show. If you are new to NATO, we encourage you to consider all that NATO has to offer in tobacco legislative advocacy that will

be showcased in the educational seminars and hope-fully become a member.

At NATO, we never lose sight of our true purpose, namely to monitor and respond to tobacco legisla-tion and regulations on a local, state and federal level. We understand the job that has been entrusted to us by the association’s membership and we work very hard to do that job extraordinarily well.

Thank you for celebrating NATO’s 10th anniversary and being a part of this all new NATO Show.

Your organization…Your showWelcome to the 1st Annual NATO Show—YOUR SHOW! As Trade Show Committee Chairman, our committee, along with our Show Man-ager Greg Martin and his fine staff, had one objective in mind as we put the show together: how do we make the NATO Show the number one event for tobacco retailers and wholesalers to attend?

We heard people telling us the industry didn’t need another trade show and that schedules were too busy al-ready. We also heard that no show was completely focused on tobacco, that industry folks would like to support an event that gave support directly back to the industry, that the show deals had to be worthwhile to “pay for the trip”, and that the educational sessions had to be relevant so that retailers could bring practical ideas back and put them to use. This is how we set forth in creating your NATO Show.

The education session lineup is the best I have per-sonally seen in my 25+ years in the tobacco indus-try, from having sessions focused on real-world retail sales strategies for cigars and pipes, the ever-changing legislative landscape we must contend with, and the change in consumptive patterns that will allow you to be ready for the changes before they happen. We’ve brought together the brightest people in the indus-try and the ones that I personally believe know what they’re talking about when they talk tobacco, such as Tom Briant, Dr. John Lauterbach, Lou Maiellano, Nik Modi, Michael Marks, and Mitch Morrison.

Our exhibiting manufacturers and distributors have been awesome. They know our retailers and wholesal-ers are looking for ways to make some money in these tough times, and their show deals are fantastic; they will make it easy to pay for your trip. When you walk the floor you will see this show is about tobacco, not candy, not gas pumps, not roller grills. I personally apologize to those that were looking forward to seeing steroid induced boxers beating on each other trying to sell en-ergy drinks—they simply aren’t allowed on our floor.

It’s tobacco and that’s it.NATO will continue to fight for the rights of the to-

bacco industry on both legislation and regulation, against higher taxes and for your rights as a retailer to sell a legal product. NATO will also be the voice that continues to inform you of what’s going on in the industry, how it af-fects you, and what you can do to make a difference.

Thank you for supporting the show that supports you. I sincerely hope our first show meets and exceeds your expectations. If you have ideas you have to improve your show experience, please let me know. Remember, NATO is your organization and this is your show!

A Unified Passion for excellenceI will never forget reading years ago about a young Olympic athlete who had just set a world record at a trial for the men’s 100 meter event. While I don’t remember the name of the athlete or even his time, I’ll never forget his answer. When the reporter asked him moments after he set the new record if he knew how long it took him to cross the finish line, the Olympian’s answer was 23 years. His point, of course, is that the world record was the culmination of a lifetime of training—not the short duration it took to cover the 100 meters.

I was reminded of this recently when asked by a re-porter about the success the NATO Show has already enjoyed weeks before the show began. The reporter observed that:

▶ Our exhibit floor sold out with a waiting list a month before the show opened;

▶ 38 major corporations are sponsoring one or more events at the show;

▶ Every major tobacco company will be in atten-dance;

▶ We oversold our room block at the Rio;▶ Over 100,000 stores were served by the hundreds

of retailers and wholesalers that had already registered; and,

▶ We had secured the nation’s single most influen-tial person capable of affecting the future of tobacco as a keynote speaker.

Listing those accomplishments, the question came: “How did you accomplish all this in less than a year?” I couldn’t help but think about the Olympic sprinter’s response. We didn’t accomplish this in a year—it took hundreds of years!

The collective experience of the four people who have worked on this show daily for a year (Andy Kerstein, Steve Sandman, Tom Briant, and me) totals over 100 years. Add to that the combined experience of all of the manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers who have helped to shape this event and the magnitude puts our astounding achievement into perspective. The success of

the show is impressive and points not to any individual but rather to what a group of experienced, passionate people can do when they are unified in their vision.

While this is NATO’s 10th Anniversary, it is the first NATO Show—designed by you, for you, to help you by growing the organization that helps you stay in business. While we will surely make a few mistakes as we put the show’s systems and processes into place for the first time, our pledge to you, as your show management team, is to provide outstanding member service, a creative commitment to excellence, and pas-sionate attention to detail. These things, when served up with an attitude of humility and hospitality, should see us through any rough spots to ensure you a first class meeting experience.

Thanks for being here and enjoy your very first NATO Show!

true Partnerships“Yes, we’re moving snus, and our fla-vored cigars are kicking butt,” the clerk said as she processed a cigarette transaction, the 18th in just the second hour of her second shift.

Yes, cigarettes remain No. 1 in store sales and will for years to come. But what is changing at light speed is the world of OTP and alternatives. Much of this is explored in our special tobacco supplement here at the show, but a gaze through the exhibitors at the NATO Show tells you that the world of tobacco is not only changing, but has already changed.

What is equally remarkable is that the companies you’d think would be obstructing this new view are actually helping drive its acceptance. PM USA and R.J. Reynolds are extolling a cold-vault mentality that encourages both diversity and maximizing your core.

Here’s the rub—and here’s the biggest challenge tobacco retailers face: What should be your assortment?

Of course you need to diversify, but how and what? Do I expand linear feet, modify my back-bar or replace fixtures? And then there’s the highly sensitive issue of supplier contracts and buydowns: Do I shop for the best upfront deal or go with true category management dis-ciplines that afford me the most control of my site?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. It truly depends on your retail model, your staffing, total plan-o-gram, ability to manage what you merchandise, and your relationship with your supplier. You probably know this already.

What may not be fully appreciated is that the playing field has changed, from supplier-controlled to something closer to a true relationship. Why? Because real-time transaction data and ZIP-code tracking of sales have permanently altered how retailers and suppliers interact.

Just a decade ago, many retailers were at the mercy of their suppliers, who shared regional and statewide data, which often bore little true resemblance to your actual markets of operation. It wasn’t anyone’s fault; the tech-nology wasn’t there. Today it is, and both suppliers and

retailers are tapping into local benchmarks and metrics. Indeed, rapid upgrades in scanning technology may

be changing as fast as the tobacco category. Today’s retail-ers are more sophisticated and knowledgeable than their predecessors of just five years ago.

Insights from tobacco analysts as well as internal and syndicated POS scan data are enabling operators to better understand who their core consumers are, what products and taste profiles they prefer and which products or segments may no longer be viable.

What suppliers bring, beyond their arsenal of prod-ucts and programs, is perspective. After talking to more than a dozen manufacturers of cigarette, cigar, MST, RYO/MYO and oral products, I am greatly impressed by the amount of localized data and selling solutions they bring to the fore.

From packaging to marketing upgrades, today’s to-bacco manufacturers are delivering a more compelling selling proposition. They are also becoming more re-spectful of the needs of retailers to sell the best movers and to pull the weak performers, even when it’s that supplier’s own brands.

The NATO Show is the tobacco industry’s most important singular event where retailers and supplies can share ideas, brainstorm over legislative and taxa-tion concerns, and explore the selling opportunities that will make the tobacco category most vital for years to come. —By Paul Reuter

A Tobacco Trade Association Exclusively Dedicated to Tobacco IssuesNATO is unique among trade associations for two very important reasons. First, the only kinds of issues that NATO works on are tobacco legis-lation and tobacco regulations. Second, NATO monitors and responds to lo-cal, state and federal tobacco legislation and regulations. This makes NATO a very exclusive association for retailers, distributors, and manufacturers that sell tobacco products. In fact, no other national trade association focuses exclusively on tobacco issues or monitors and responds to local, state and federal tobacco issues.

There are a number of unique advantages to NATO’s exclu-sive focus on tobacco issues that benefit all NATO members. These unique advantages are:

▶ NATO legislative staff has a combined 85+ years of experience in the tobacco industry and this knowl-edge and expertise are critical in assisting members on legislative and regulatory issues.

▶ NATO is a leader in communicating with its members about tobacco issues by regularly sending out via e-mail the Tobacco E-News Bulletin that con-tains up-to-date information on tobacco legislative issues and tobacco regulations.

▶ NATO develops and implements innovative strategies to re-spond to tobacco issues and tobacco regulations.

▶ NATO serves as a clearinghouse for tobacco legislative and regula-tory information. If a member needs advice on a tobacco matter or, for example, documentation on FDA regulatory matters, NATO is one of the best sources for such advice or information.

▶ NATO works with members to determine the best method to re-ceive information on tobacco legislation that may affect their tobacco business.

We look forward to your membership in NATO and your help in sup-porting the association that supports the entire tobacco industry.

Mitch Morrison, Vice President & Group Editor CSP Magazine and J. Michael Marks, Managing Partner, Indian River Consulting Group Join us for an event that will be talked about for the next year. Recent regu-latory and tax changes have dramatically altered the environment in which retailers operate. The old operating standards and benchmarks are simply not applicable anymore. This session will provide the results of an industry wide survey of practices, issues, opportunities, and chal-lenges. The survey has been designed for annual updates that, over time, will provide a clear picture of both the industry present and the future. This won’t be a data diving PowerPoint presentation, rather it will be a series of small group conversations held at each table. The presenters will share new insights and then each table will dis-cuss implications for their own businesses by comparing their direct experiences with the research insights. There will be three rounds of discussions with appropriate breaks. Each discussion will be preceded with sharing of new research insights. The three sessions will examine:

▶ What are the key take-aways with respect to running your own business?

▶ What is the right way to evaluate emerging threats and re-spond to them?

▶ Where are the opportunities for growth and how can they be leveraged?

This is all about helping each executive with their strategic plan-ning as they continue to live in our challenging environment. Learn what your fellow retailers are using as the new standards for mea-suring performance and take home simple, practical benchmarks that you can use to evaluate your own retail business. Participants will be

provided with copies of all presentation materials. This is something that is significantly new and different that has been designed to de-liver significant value to executives within the industry, don’t miss it.

In addition Bruce Gates, Senior Vice-President of External Affairs for Altria Client Services, will explain the legislative process and the best techniques for retailers to contact their elected officials to make an impact on the outcome of tobacco legislation.

oPtion 2 | MIRANDA ROOMS 7 & 8Capitalizing on the Change in Consumptive PatternsCourtesy of Altria

Speaker: Ron Funk, Funk Consulting

This session is imperative to understanding the new tobacco consum-er and how your store can prepare to meet shoppers’ changing needs. Has the consumer changed where he or she buys tobacco? Has the money shifted between channels and/or brands because of increased taxation? Has the consumer changed his/her attitudes toward brand vs. generic, RYO, or cigars? This session provides practical recommen-dations on how you can position yourself as a total tobacco purveyor.

Ron Funk with Funk Consulting will be conducting this session. Ron’s insight into consumptive patterns comes from a 30 year ca-reer at Rothmans, Benson & Hedges Inc., culminating in the role Vice President Sales, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs and Com-petitive Strategy. He has watched and documented the changes in consumptive patterns in the Canadian market and will bridge the Canadian tobacco retailer’s experience with what their peers may ex-perience in the US and how US tobacco retailers can position them-selves as “total tobacco purveyors”. Ron has been twice recognized as the Industry’s Outstanding Leader by the National Association of Convenience Store Distributors (Canada).

oPtion 3 | BRASILIA ROOMS 1 & 2OTP: Seismic Shift in Tobacco InfrastructureModerated by: Lou Maiellano, President, TAZ Marketing &

Consulting GroupPanelists: Steve Sandman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing,

Republic Tobacco; Joe Teller, Director Category Manage-ment, Swedish Match; Chris Beaulier, Director of Retail Operations, Cigaret Shopper

Tobacco’s very core is shifting like the earth’s crust in anticipation of an earthquake. What is next on the horizon? How should retailers re-spond? What are our options? Other tobacco products are continu-ing to grow, and some predict OTP will surpass cigarettes’ share of U.S. tobacco profit by the year 2025. A panel of OTP manufacturers tackles the big challenges and offers key, practical insights for today’s tobacco retailers.
