What is resilience?

Resilience is the capacity of a community to organize itself to reduce the impact of disasters by protecting lives, livelihoods, homes, assets, basic services, and infrastructure. Resilience includes the capacities of communities to advance development processes, social networks and institutional partnerships that strengthen the ability of the community to cope with and recover from disasters.

From City to Resilient CityResilient cities demonstrate 7 qualities that allow them to withstand, respond to, and adapt more readily to shocks and stresses:Reflective: using past experience to inform future decisionsRobust: well-conceived, constructed, and managed systemsFlexible: willingness and ability to adopt alternative strategies in response to changing circumstancesIntegrated: bring together a range of distinct systems and institutionsRedundant: spare capacity purposively created to accommodate disruptionInclusive: prioritize broad consultation to create a sense of shared ownership in decision makingResourceful: Recognizing alternative ways to use resources

Since … almost 20 years

Page 10: NATO Cax forum 2015

there is an ever-increasing demand for the collection,

integration, management and sharing of reliable spatial

information

Background - 3D Geobrowsers The availability of Web-based Geographical Information Systems and more specifically 3D Geobrowsers such as Google™ Earth, Microsoft® Virtual Earth™ or NASA WorldWind has extended the domain of GIS-based application to the web. 3D Geobrowsers are today used by a number of agency both as a working tool and as a platform to make geographical data publicly available to the entire community.

• “How to improve the usability of the system?” (visualization and user interaction)

• “How to facilitate the creation of new information within the system?” (information creation).

• “How to get information into the system?” (information integration)• “How to get from the integrated information basis just the information

required for a certain task?” (information aggregation and generalization)

We work along the following research

questions:
