ONE CALL INSTITUTE 2019

Maria Milazzo brought 5 of our young music ministers to the One Call Institute - a music camp sponsored by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians made to empower young people to have a voice in the church and in their music ministry! Students absolutely loved the experience and gained knowledge and practical skills they can apply in their own ministry. We are grateful for everyone who donated money to make this experience possible for them and/or purchased Tiny Saints to help alleviate our costs! Thank you also to all who support liturgical music and our ministry. The liturgy is at the core of our Catholic identity and is enhanced through beautiful and prayerful music. Investing in young people is invest-ing in the future of our church! Read our students' testimonials:

During the week at One Call Institute I had a wonderful time. It was a great experience, and I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to attend again this year! During the week we had many group sessions involving music, faith building, and a new found companionship. I learned many new things and I hope we can apply them at Nativity. I would like to thank all the people that were so generous to donate for us to go to One Call. I had a wonderful week and I’m planning on attending next year! - Naomi I had an incredible time at OCI 2019! I got the wonderful opportunity to grow in my faith and learn more about sing-ing. I also got the chance to meet so many great people from all over America and continue to talk to them even after OCI. I love the atmosphere and the community that has been created at St. John’s. - Faustina I had an amazing time this year at One Call Institute. While there I learned a lot about how to work as a cantor, how to compose music, and how to use correct singing forms. I also got to meet a lot of interesting people and make many friends. This was truly an amazing experience and I look forward to the opportunity to go back next year. - Cyril

JULY 14, 2019 - THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Our God is about relationships. In the first reading, Moses reminds the Israelites that the laws, which are already in their hearts, keep them in right relationship with the God who loves them so much that they always find forgiveness. Centu-ries later, along comes Jesus, whom Paul describes to the Colossians as the image of the invisible God, the very em-bodiment of this God of love. In his parable about the good Samaritan, Jesus explains how the law of love overrules the letter of the law. Instead of answering the question Who is my neighbor? Jesus demonstrates that it is not about who is worthy of being loved, but rather loving as God loves--about being neighbor, about being the good Samaritan. Jesus wants us to continue his work as images of this God of love by loving all people, even those who seem to be our ene-mies.

LAW AND ORDER Have you ever listened to someone giving a specific person a dose of reality and realized that you were also intended to get it ? In today’s Gospel, Jesus is speaking to a know-it-all who seems to be baiting him, trying to see if Jesus has the theological wherewithal to be the great teacher he was said to be, asking about the requirements in the Law to gain eter-nal life. Jesus turns the tables and asks this lawyer, this expert, how he himself would answer the question. The lawyer states the obvious answer from the Law about loving God and one’s neighbor. But Jesus asks for more: Who is my neighbor? Does the Law answer this question?

In Deuteronomy, Moses spoke to the Israelites about the new Law, the Ten Commandments. At the time of Jesus, those ten laws had bloated into more than six hundred, requiring interpretation so that people could be obedient but unen-cumbered by the inevitable inconsistencies of such a vast set of regulations. Instead of the Law, Jesus answers with one of the most famous stories of all time: the good Samaritan. Here is where the plot thickens.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? On his way to Jerusalem, to the cross, Jesus and his disciples had recently passed through Samaria and found no wel-come there, due to animosity between the two peoples. Jesus disciples wanted vengeance. So Jesus tells the story of how two strict adherents to the Law ignored the man who needed help, probably because of a slavish interpretation of the Law. A stranger from Samaria, who was seemingly little more than a heathen, treated the man with kindness and compassion. (Hey, disciples, did you hear that?)

Moses tried to tell the Israelites that the Law was already in their hearts. Jesus wanted the lawyer and the disciples--and us--to realize that the heart of the Law is a matter of our own hearts. That is where we know our neighbor--everyone.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS On a summer day, with the windows open, we may hear the sound of church bells. Bells seem to have come into church life in Irish monasteries around the seventh century, and spread around the Christian world by Irish monks on mission-ary journeys. By the eighth century, bells were standard equipment in even small parish churches. An ancient ceremony, once called the baptism of the bells, recognizes that the church bell has a voice to call people to awareness and sum-mon them to worship, and even bestows a name on the bell. In a world without clocks or watches, the bell had an indispensable role. For calling monks in from the fields for prayer, or alerting far-flung visitors, the bell’s voice was enhanced by hoisting it high into a tower. Soon it was learned that the sound of several bells clanging together in harmony imparted a sense of joy to great celebrations, and bell towers pros-pered, some chock full of bells. Different combinations of rings could indicate a death, a Mass, a wedding, a fast day, the curfew at the end of day, and the Angelus. Before electricity, bell-ringing was hard work indeed: the biggest bell in the Catholic world, in Cologne, Germany, weighs twenty-seven tons! There’s no substitute for the resonant roar of a mighty bell; electric chimes are not eligible for blessing!
