• Dakota is the tribal name of the Dakota Sioux meaning “friendly”.

• The Sioux Indians, who call themselves "Lakota" or "Dakota," are one of the largest and best-known Native American tribes of the Great Plains.

• Tepees are good homes for people who are always on the move.

• One of the largest and most powerful tribes.

• They lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

• There home was called a wigwam.

• They live in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

• They are relatives to the Navajos.

• They are best known for fierce military resistance against Mexican and Americans, under the leadership of warriors like Geronimo.

• Their home is called a wiki up. It is made of brush.

ShoshonisShoshonis

• They live in Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and parts of California.

• They were sometimes enemies of Blackfeet, Lakota, and Cheyenne.

• They lived in tepis. An entire village could be taken down and be ready to move in one hour.

YakimaYakima

• They live in Washington state.

• They are master fisherman and traders.

• There home was an earth lodge. They did not move. It was like a basement home with a dome top.

• Story telling is very important to their culture.

SeminoleSeminole

• They live in Florida. Some of them were forced to move to Oklahoma in the 1800’s.

• Their home is a chickees. It is a stilt house with no walls.

NavajosNavajos

• They are the largest nation. • They are famous for rugs. • Their language was used for code

in WWII.• They live in the four corners of

Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado.

• Navajo people lived in hogans, which are traditional earth houses. A hogan is made of a special wood framework packed with clay into a domed shape, with the door facing east. The thick earthen walls insulate the hogan and protect the people inside from wind and strong weather.

HopiHopi

• They are known as peaceful people.

• They are expert farmers and artists.

• Kachini dolls are used to teach children about religion. They do not take them to bed with them.

• They live in adobe houses. They are good for a farming community that has no need to move.

ZuniZuni

• Zuni live in New Mexico in adobe houses or pueblos . Ladders are used to reach upstairs apartments. Some are still in use today.
