Therearereasonswhycomposerswritenationalisticpieces,astimulusmoresubtlethansimplejingoism.Forsomethereasoncanbebiography(Ives’musicfromhischildhood),prideofhomeland(Chopin’sPolishdances),orjustbecausesomeoneaskedforaspecificpiece.Atextaboutone’scountrycanbeheighteneddramaticallythroughtheuseofmusic,orperhapsthefolkmelodiesanddancesmayspeakontheirown.Often,whatwethinkofapeopleandtheirculturecomesfromtheconcertmusicwe’veheardfromchildhood:thewildHungariandancesofLiszt,theImpressionismofDebussy,Mussorgsky’s“GreatGateofKiev.”Yet,onfirstlisten,whatwethinkwehearmaybeonlyascrimthatblurstherealpicturebehindthegauze.
Brooklyn-born Aaron Copland(1900–1990)wasarip-roaringmodernistwhenhereturnedtotheUnitedStatesfromstudiesinParisin1925,buthesoonwasenergizedbyphotographerAlfredStieglitz’ideathatthefocusofAmericanartsshouldbe“AmericanDemocracy.”ThereisanotherstorythatCopland’steacherinParis,NadiaBoulanger,suggestedtheyoungmanstopimitatingEuropeancomposersandwriteinhisownAmericanvoice.Eitherway,thequintessentialcomposerofAmericanmusiccameintobeing.Fanfare for the Common Man gotitstitlefromaspeechbyVicePresidentHenryWallacein1942extollingthe“CenturyoftheCommonMan.”Coplandrecalled,
EugeneGoossens,conductoroftheCincinnatiSymphonyOrchestra,hadwrittentomeattheendofAugustaboutanideahewantedtoputintoactionforthe1942–43concertseason.DuringWorldWarIhehadaskedBritishcomposersforafanfaretobegineachorchestralconcert.IthadbeensosuccessfulthathethoughttorepeattheprocedureinWorldWarIIwithAmericancomposers.
Therewereseventeenothercomposerswhocreatedfanfares,butnoonerememberstheirworks,suchisthegreatweightyandlumberingpowerofCopland’spiece.EvenCoplandrealizedfurtherpotentialintheshortwork,forhesoonrearrangedthebrassandpercussionpieceandincorporatedaversionofitintothefourthmovementofhisSymphony No. 3,completedin1946.TheFanfaremadeitsappearanceatthesametimeastheballetRodeo,thescoreforthefilmOur Town,theLincoln Portrait,andayearbeforeAppalachian Spring.Copland’smusiccapturedthepictureofacountry,andthatpicturebecamethesymboloftheUnitedStatesfortherestoftheworld.
Valeri Grigorevich KiktawasbornonOctober22,1941,inasmalltowninUkraine.HewaseducatedatMoscowChoralCollege,thenwenttotheMoscowConservatorywherehebegantostudycomposition.Shostakovichrecommendedhecontinueonforgraduatestudies.Kiktaisnotedforhisballet,choral,andsymphonicscores,andhehasalsoprovidedmusicforthreeRussianfilms.TowardtheendoftheSovieterahismusicwasrecordedbyMelodiya,theStaterecordingcompany.Frescoes of the St. Sofia Cathedral of KievforharpandorchestraisasongofpraisetoatreasuredcathedralinKievbyaproudsonofUkraine.Thebuildingitself,anenormouscomplex,wasnamedaWorldHeritageSitebyUNESCOin1990.Constructionwasbegunin1037(or1011,ormaybeearlier)byYaroslavItheWise,rulerofNovgorod,GrandPrinceoftheRus’,andsonofVikingGrandPrinceVladimirtheGreat.Yaroslav’sbrotherobjectedtothesuccessionratherbrutally.YaroslavwontheensuingbattlebyoustinghisenemieswiththehelpofthecitizensandbuilttheCathedralingratitude.TheCathedralisnamedforHagiaSophia(GreatWisdom),a6th-centurycathedralinConstantinople.BysomemiracletheKievCathedralsurvivedthemassiveanti-religiousdestructionsbytheSovietgovernmentinthe1920s.Themosaicsandfrescoesinsideareinvariousstatesofdisrepair,althoughmanyarestillquite

breathtaking,particularlythosethatfeaturethedepictionofChristPantocrator(theAlmighty);mostdatefromthe11thcenturyandincludearepresentationofYaroslavandhisfamily.In2011Ukrainecelebratedthe1000thAnniversaryoftheCathedral.Kikta’sworkforharpisastrollpastnineofthefamedartworks;wehearsixmovementsinthisconcert.
TotakeasnapshotoftheidentityproblemsinherentinbeingaFinn,thenameofthecountryintheFinnishlanguageisSuomen tasavalta,andinSwedish,Republiken Finland. HelsinkiisalsoHelsingfors.Swedishisstilloneofthenationallanguages,aremnantfromthearea’sidentityaspartofSwedenfromthe12thcenturyuntilitbecameanindependentareawithintheRussianempirein1809.FinlandfinallydeclaredindependencefromRussiainlate1917,butwiththeupperclassesspreadaroundthecoaststillspeakingSwedish,andthepoorerFinnsclusteredintheremotecenterofthecountry,Swedishculturecontinuedtodominate.BytheendofWorldWarIItheFinnsfoughtboththeSovietandNaziarmiesforcontroloftheircountryandidentitywasdefined.Despitebeingthecenterofasquabblebetweengreaterpowers,FinlandhasmaintaineditsidentitythroughthemusicofJean Sibelius.BornintoaSwedish-speakingfamily,hewassenttothecountry’sfirstFinnish-speakingschoolattheageof10,anexperiencethatgavehimaroughintroductiontothelanguage,thoughhewaswellintolate20sbeforehebecameapassionateproponentofhisnativeculture.ThefirstnuggetsofLuonnotar, Op. 70,seemtodatebackto1894,ashebegantoplumbtheFinnishepicpoemKalevala,itselfanassemblageofmythsandfolktalesfromancientFinnishoraltraditioncobbledtogetherbyElianLönnrotin1849.ThetexttellsthestoryofthecreationoftheworldthroughthestoryofLuonnotar,SpiritofNatureandMotheroftheSeas,assungbyasopranoagainstanevocativeorchestralpanoramaofnaturesounds.Inthestory,amaidenfloatsonwavesformanycenturiesandthenbeginstogivebirthtotheearth;presentlyalittle
duckappears,butitcannotfindarestingplaceamongthewaves,soLuonnotarbendsherkneesothebirdcanbuildanest.Alas,theeggsinthenestbreak,butthefragmentsbecomethemoonandthestars,andthemusicdriftsawayethereally.Thesopranolineisnotforthefaintofheart;itisabravurapiecethatmakesalmostunconscionabledemandsonthevoice.ThecriticfortheTimesofLondonwroteecstaticallyofthefirstperformance,whichwasgivenattheGloucesterMusicFestivalin1913.
AaronCopland,thearchetypalAmericancomposer,hadahistoryofactivityinCommunistcausesduringtheDepression,andnooneseemedtominduntilApril1949,whentheCommunistscontriveda“CulturalandScientificConferenceforWorldPeace”(latercalledtheWaldorfConferenceforitslocation,theWaldorf-AstoriaHotel).TheSovietssentDmitriShostakovichaspartofitsdelegation,and,ofcourse,AaronCoplandhadtobeonhandamongartistssuchasArthurMillerandLillianHellmantowelcomehim.TheoccasionwasplottedbytheSovietstoputasmuchpressureonShostakovichaspossible,writingaself-criticizingspeechforhimtodeliver.CoplandwasroundlycriticizedforcooperatingwiththeColdWarenemy,andhisnameappearedonaLife MagazinephotospreadofmisguidedAmericans,“innocentdupes”includingLangstonHughes,AlbertEinstein,SusanB.AnthonyII,andLeonardBernstein,allofwhomwereaccusedofconsortingwithwhatthegovernmentlabeledsubversiveorganizations.Copland’snamewasonthelistofmiscreantsinthe1950Report of Communist Influence on Radio and Television. In1953Copland’sLincoln Portrait,writtenin1942tosupportWorldWarIIpatriotism,waswithdrawnfromDwightEisenhower’sinauguralceremonyafterprotestsfromardentanti-CommunistIllinoisRepresentativeFredBusbey;afewmonthslaterCoplandwascalledtotestifybeforeSenatorJosephMcCarthy’sPermanentSubcommitteeonInvestigations.(Hedidn’tnamenames.)AccordingtoarchivesattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,“Artsanduniversity

communitiesralliedaroundhim;hereceivedhonorarydoctoratesfromPrincetonandBrandeisduringthe1950s,aswellasmembershipintheAmericanAcademyofArtsandLetters.”AndCoplandwascommissionedtowritetheCanticle of Freedom byMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(MIT).
Canticle of FreedomhaditspremiereatthededicationofarchitectEeroSaarinen’sKresgeAuditoriumandChapelontheMITcampusinCambridge,MA,onMay8,1955.ThetextisfromThe Bruce,apoembyScotspatriotJohnBarbour(1320–1375),usingthestanzabeginningwith“Freedomisanoblething!”CoplandwasquiteawarehewaswritingforMIT’schoralsociety,gleeclub,andorchestra,whichiswhythevoicepartsenterquitelateinthepiece(similartoBeethoven’sChoral Fantasy).Inorderto“makeabignoise”Coplandlaidonalargepercussionsectionwithdrums,gongs,bells,andxylophones.However,justbecausetheworkwaswrittenfornon-professionalsdoesn’tmeanit’seasytoperform:thecross-rhythmsalonerequirefocusedattention.TheBoston Globecriticassuredhisreadersthepiecewasgoodandsolid,definitelyinthebelovedCoplandstyle,buttheworkwasnotperformedagainuntilitwasrevisedin1968foraperformanceconductedbyRobertShaw.
Sergei ProkofievdiedMarch5,1953,inMoscow.Afewhourslater,andlessthanadozenmilesaway,JosephStalin,Prokofiev’snemesisandinquisitor,died.ForthreedaysthethrongsgatheredinRedSquaretomournStalin,makingitimpossibletocarryProkofiev’sbodyoutofhisapartmentneartheSquareforthefuneralserviceattheheadquartersoftheSovietComposer’sUnion.Anadditionalthreedayswentbybeforethenewsofthecomposer’sdeathtrickledoutfrombehindtheIronCurtain,andafurtherthreedaysbeforePravdaissuedabriefnotice.Thenation’sattentionwasfocusedonmourningitsleader:fewbereavedappearedatProkofiev’sfuneral,andevenflowerswereabsent,fortheyhadallbeengatheredupby
theKremlinpowers.Instead,paperflowersandatapedrecordingofthefuneralmarchfromRomeo and Juliethadtobeused.ForthebelovedcomposerofPeter and the Wolf,theRomeo and Juliet andCinderella ballets,theClassical Symphony,andsomanyotherfamiliarandadmiredworks,hiscoffinwasshelteredwithbutasolitarypinebranch.
Prokofiev’slifebeganwithlessinsult.Anonlychild,borninApril1891inUkrainetoafamilyincomfortablecircumstances,Prokofievdevelopedhismusicaltalentearlyunderhismother’sguidance.ThefamilyvisitedMoscowfrequentlyenoughsothechildwasexposedtoconcertmusic,andsoonthecomposerGlièrebeganvisitingthe11-year-oldtogivehimlessons.TwoyearslaterProkofievappliedfortheSt.PetersburgConservatory,andinSeptember1904hebeganstudyingattheconservatory.Politicalturmoilinthecityspreadintotheconservatory:prominentfacultyweredismissedorresignedinprotestandclasseswerecancelledduringuprisings.NoneofthisroilingturbulenceaffectedtheyoungProkofiev’sbehavior,though.Headstrongandconceited,thebrilliantpianistdelightedintweakingmusicalconvention,inactingbothsociallyandmusicallynaughty.Composersadmiredhisworks,audienceswerestunnedbyhisbreathtakingpianisticprowess,andmusiccriticsdespairedofhiswildideas.Despitehisantics,Prokofievgraduatedfromtheconservatoryin1914,winningtheconcertoprizewiththeFirstPianoConcertothathehimselfpremieredbrilliantly.HismothersenthimtoLondonduringthesummerof1914,wherehereceivedacommissionfromDiaghilev’sBalletsRusses,afterwhichtimehereturnedtotheConservatorytoavoidconscription.Prokofiev’smusicwasalreadybeginningtohaveseveralwell-receivedperformancesbythetimetheGreatWarwasunderway,anddespitethewarandtheFebruaryandOctoberrevolutionsinRussia,hisfirstviolinconcertoandfirstsymphonybearnoindicationoftheturmoilaroundhim.

RevolutionProkofievleftfortheUnitedStates,arrivinginSanFranciscoin1918.Hedidsomeconcertizing,receivedanunfulfilledcontractforLove for Three Oranges,butultimatelyleftforParisinApril1920.ProkofievthrivedinParis,andin1927hedidaconcerttourofRussia.Hewasfrightfullyhomesick,sohemadesurefurtherpremieresandcommissionshappenedinRussia.Intheearly1930shewascommissionedbytheKirovtowriteRomeo and Juliet.StalinattemptedincessantlytolureProkofievbacktohishomeland,nowtheSovietUnion;finally,allthepromisesenticedProkofievtomovebackpermanentlyin1936,andhewasjoinedbyhisfamilythenextyear.Prokofievslowlyrealizedhehadvoluntarilyenteredaprison:bythentheSovietComposers’Unionwaskeepingtrackoftheartistsandtheiractivities,limitingoutsideinfluencesandcontacts.
By1938,whenProkofievjoinedSergeiMikhailovichEisenstein(1898–1948),afamedfilmdirectorandtheorist,fortheproductionofAlexander Nevsky,hehadalreadywrittenmusicfortwootherfilms,Lt. KijeandPique Dame.Thefilmwasatruecollaborationbetweenthetwomen,withProkofievscoringsomeoftheaction,andEisensteinfilmingthestoryaccordingtoProkofiev’smusic.TheexperienceofcopingwithStalin’squixoticpersonalitywasalreadyfamiliartobothmen,andEisensteinpublishedanarticleinIzvestia,anofficialstatepaper,alertingthepublicthattheroleofNevskywasastand-inforStalin,theherorepulsingtheTeutonicKnights.Thefilmwasintendedtobeallegorical,bolsteringtheSovietsideofthecurrentGerman–Soviettensions,butalmostasaprophecy,theallegorybegantogaingreaterconnectiontoeventsatthetime,anddetailsoftheplotsuddenlybecameaprophesyofevents.
ThehistoricalAlexanderNevsky(1220–1263)wasPrinceofNovgorod,GrandPrinceofKiev,andGrandPrinceofVladimir.(HemayhavebeenrelatedtoYaroslavIbutwasnotinlinetothethrone.)Nevsky’soriginalfamecamefromhisroleasamilitaryleaderrepulsing
invadersfromGermanyandSwedeninthefamedbattleontheNevain1240whenhewas19;“Nevsky”isanicknamefromtheNevaepisode.HeleftNovgorodoverapoliticaldisagreementbutwascalledbacktodriveoutaninvasionfromtheLivonianOrderofTeutonicKnights,agroupthatwastryingtoswallowuptheareasnowknownasEstoniaandLatvia.NevskyandcivilianfootsoldiersrepulsedthemountedandarmoredTeutonicKnightsonthefrozensurfaceofLakePeipusintheBattleoftheIce,April5,1242.(LakePeipusisanenormouslakeontheborderofEstoniaandRussia,thecurrentboundarybetweenthetwocountries.)
ThefilmmadepointedallusionstotheinvadingKnights,forexample,havingthebishops’mitersoftheTeutonichordeemblazonedwithswastikas.ThemoviewasabighitwhenitwasreleasedinDecember1938,butwastakenoutofcirculationwhenStalinsignedtheMolotov-RibbentropPactofnon-aggressionbetweenGermanyandtheSovietUnioninAugust1939(onefeatureofthePactwasthatGermanyandtheUSSRwouldeachgethalfofPolandwhenGermanyinvaded).However,onJune22,1941,whenGermanyinvadedtheSovietUnion,thefilmwasbackonthescreen,bothintheUSSRandthewest.TheStalinPrizeof1941wenttoEisensteinandhisfilmcrew(notincludingProkofiev).
Astie-insforafilmgo,nothingcouldbeattheSiegeofLeningrad:InSeptember8,1941,theGermanArmy,insteadofattackingdirectly,blockadedthecityinasiegethatlasteduntilJanuary27,1944,872daysduringwhich1.4millionpeoplewereevacuatedand1.5millionpeopledied,manyduetostarvation.OnlyonenarrowroutetoLeningradwasavailabletotheSoviets,abitofLakeLadogathatwasnotcontrolledbyeitherGermansorFinns.Duringthewarmmonthstherewasanarrowtrackofmudthroughwhichsuppliescouldbegottentothedefenders.Eachwinter,the“RoadofLife”wascreatedtoformanavenuetoevacuatewoundedandstarvingRussiansfromLeningrad,aroadthatwent

acrossthethickicysurfaceoftheLake.CouldLeningradhaveheldoutagainsttheNaziswithoutthatIceRoad?Whoknows.ButtheSoviets,includingmanycivilians,wereabletodefeattheTeutonicarmylayingsiegeusingalakecoveredwiththickice.
SoonafterhisreturntotheSovietUnionin1936,Prokofievrealizedhecouldcreatesomeprotectionforhimselfbycloakinghisworksinpatriotism,and,usingatexthewrotewithpoetVladimirLugovskoy,hequicklyturnedthemusicforAlexander Nevskyintoacantataformezzo-sopranosolo,chorus,andorchestra.Anotherreasonforpreservingthemusicincantataformcouldhavebeenthepoorqualityofthesoundtrack,onwhichmuchofthemusicisunintelligible.ProkofievconductedtheMoscowPhilharmonicOrchestraandChorusinthefirstperformanceMay17,1939.Thecantataisintwenty-threesectionsgroupedinsevenmovements,and,asinPeter and the Wolf,Prokofiev’suseoftheorchestraneatlyunderlinesthestory:theTeutonicknightsareportrayedbyaggressivebrass,usuallyindissonantharmonies,andthesimpleRussiansareportrayedwithfolk-likesongsanddancesinstringsandflutes.
Onecuriosityaboutthetextrequiresabitofsuppositionandmind-reading,andthatisthetextfortheTeutonicknights.ProkofievclaimedtheKnightsmarchedintobattlesingingCatholicPsalms,butthewordsseemtomakelittlesense.TheyarefromthePsalms,particularlythetextinStravinsky’sSymphony of Psalms(1930),inphrasesthathavebeenputinagrinderandreassembledinanonsensicalway.CouldthisbeProkofievpokingfunathis“rival,”theRussianwhoremainedintheWest,portrayinghimasTeutonic?Someresearchersaredefinite,butthereisnoconcreteevidence—exceptforaphrasethatends,incorrectlyforLatin,butwithanest,whichmaystandforStravinsky’slastname.Prokofievwasawitanditispossiblehewasplayingagame,althoughheshouldhavepointeditouttotheComposersUnion,ifonlytogethimmorecreditasaworthycitizen.
