New Jersey Wrestling Family,

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame is committed to advancing awareness and appreciation for the history of wrestling in the state of New Jersey. Each year your State Chapter program accomplishes its mission of preserving your state's history in wrestling by recognizing and inducting individuals who have inspired others through their years of service and commitment. It is my pleasure

to welcome you as we induct another great class of honorees.

We believe that when properly informed, people will better understand what a wrestling life is all about. By sharing in this celebration and enshrinement ceremony, you are witnessing first-hand the impact our State Chapter programs and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame have upon the sport. As we recognize these individuals honored today, we are able to share their inspiring stories with current and future generations. Our mission uniquely qualifies us to help shape public perception about our sport through the lives and stories of those you are here to support today. Our honorees have made an indelible impact upon our sport and our communities because of the lives they have transformed through a sport that welcomes everyone, no matter their size, ethnicity, physical limitations or gender.

We are fortunate to have the generous and outstanding volunteer leaders to manage and operate this program in the state of New Jersey on behalf of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. I also thank you for supporting our chapter, which is dedicated to celebrating and advancing the heritage of wrestling in the state of New Jersey for generations to come.

Sincerely yours in the spirit of preserving, recognizing and inspiring,

One of New Jersey’s most popular coaches passed away this summer. Rick Iacono was 72 when he succumbed to cancer.

He was inducted into the New Jersey Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015 with the distinction of Lifetime Service. His death is a huge loss to the wrestling community.

A resident of Middlesex, “Ricky I” coached the sport at four different high schools: Rutgers Prep, Jonathan Dayton in Springfield, Governor Livingston in Berkeley Heights, and Middlesex. He won 324 matches over a career that spanned 42 years. Only 16 New Jersey coaches have more victories.

He grew up in Bound Brook, where he graduated from high school.

From there he went on to Liberty State University in West Virginia, then received a Master’s in Education. In addition to coaching wrestling he coached football, tennis, softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball and field hockey. He won a state championship in softball at Governor Livingston in 2007.

Also a wrestling referee, he officiated Freestyle and Greco-Roman, including the AAU level, Federation tournaments and the Olympic Trials. He was a member of the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association 40 years, and also served as President of Region 3 and was a District 10 and 12 representative.

Iacono’s love for his country and respect for the military led to his helping send numerous students off to successful military careers.

A student of the sport, just weeks before his passing he attended a wrestling camp.

Ricky is survived by his wife Kitty of 49 years, their son Joe, daughters Marisa and Katie, and three grandchildren.

Richard Voliva (Deceased) Lifetime Service (COLLEGE)

In the sport of wrestling, Dick Voliva did it all.

He was a NCAA national champion, he medaled in the Olympics and was an AAU freestyle national champion. After starting the wrestling program at Montclair State he then coached 23 years at the state university, and for many years was Director of Intramurals at Rutgers.

No surprise he was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame 35 years ago. And certainly no surprise he is now a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the National HOF.

Raised in the small Southern Indiana town of Clear Creek, Voliva went on to wrestle for Indiana University. He went 48-4 in his college career where he led IU to the Big Ten’s first national championship (1932). He placed second in nationals as a junior and won it as a senior in 1934.

Two years later he took a silver medal in the Olympic Games in Berlin. In national AAU tournaments he took a first, second and third.

Before taking the Rutgers job he served five years in the Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At Rutgers his teams went 148-85-8, during which time he produced eight EIWA champions and two All-Americans.

Voliva was also an NCAA official, served as president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Coaches Association and also the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He spent five years as a member of the NCAA Rules Committee.

In addition to his accomplishments in college wrestling, he also excelled in football. As a senior he made the All-Big Ten team.

Honored with the Harry E. Lake Award in 1966, Voliva would coach several young men who went on to coach and also be elected to the New Jersey Chapter of the NWHOF.

He is survived by his three children, two of whom wrestled for Piscataway High School.

Daniel Mahony (Deceased) Lifetime Service (HIGH SCHOOL)

In high school on Long Island Dan played football, basketball and baseball. He played football at Clarion University, where he became an All-National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) wide receiver.

His niche, however, would be officiating high school wrestling.

Following a short stint playing semi-pro football, he settled into teaching and coaching for 42 years. Twenty-eight of those were as a wrestling official.

He pioneered the wrestling program at Lancaster High School in Pennsylvania while also serving as football coach. After a brief stop at East Paterson High School (now Elmwood Park), he settled in at Bridgewater-Raritan where he coached wrestling for 10 years, football for 15 years and taught history for 37 years.

In 1997, he was named Bridgewater-Raritan’s Teacher of the Year.

In 1998, he won the Rich Mirshak Award for excellence in officiating. He would be president of the Union-Essex Chapter of the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association for 18 years, state association president two years and headed the association’s ethics committee six years.

He was on the board of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame New Jersey Chapter, was Director of the Somerset County Wrestling Tournament 32 years, and District 18 Director 32 years. He is also in the Region 5 Hall of Fame.

Dan also found time to umpire local softball, and for 25 years was co-chair of the Parks and Playgrounds Commission.

He was President of the NJWOA three years and secretary of the association six years. On the mat he refereed 21 years at the state tournament and officiated seven finals.

In 1994 Dan was named an Outstanding Official by the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association. He is also in his college Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dan passed away two years ago, leaving behind his wife Kathleen and their three children.

Vincent Russo Lifetime Service (HIGH SCHOOL)

This will be Vince’s 37th season as a wrestling official. As you can imagine, that’s a lot of time to build a resume. And boy has he.

After successful wrestling careers at Bloomfield High School and Montclair State, Vince got right into the coaching business when he

helped out with the West Essex Junior wrestling team in 1978. While assisting at the high school from ’82 to ’85 (with a sectional title in ’83), he put on the striped shirt in 1982.

He officiated state sectionals and districts from 1986-2009, regionals from 1989-2009, and 12 state championships between 1989 and 2009. He refereed group finals 15 years and did eight different county tournaments.

Among his favorite dual meets he officiated, and one he did several times, was the Phillipsburg-Paulsboro showdowns.

In 2009, Vince became involved as a NJSIAA assigner, focusing on seven schools. He also refereed high school nationals for 10 years.

He has been the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association treasurer for the past 10 years. Vince also took things into his own hands, starting the Rutgers officials/coaches clinic in 2012. He created the New Jersey Wrestling evaluation process for officials, and started the Blair Academy duels for the evaluation of officials.

As for awards, there have been numerous, including the inaugural Vince Russo Golden Whistle Award in 2013. In 2016 he was named Wrestling USA Official of the Year, was honored in 2014 with the NFHS Citation Award presented by the NJSIAA, and a year ago was given the Morris County Athletic Directors Dedication Award.

In 2016, Vince was named National Wrestling Official of the Year by Wrestling USA Magazine.

Born in Newark, Vince now resides in Cedar Grove with his wife Lorraine. They have three grown children.

14 The New Jersey Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Bob is already in the Mount Olive High School Hall of Fame and the NJSIAA Hall of Fame (1990), so it comes as no surprise he’s been inducted to the New Jersey Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Though retired as a physical education and health teacher, he continues to assist in the athletic field as a volunteer coach with the Mount Olive girls’ golf team, a program he started four years ago. He has coached high school golf since 1990.

A graduate of Roxbury High, Bob went on to wrestle for Seton Hall University and became a two-time Metropolitan place winner. He broke into the coaching profession in 1971 as an assistant at West Morris High School. He moved up to the head coaching position at Mt. Olive in 1978. After 11 years in charge he switched seats and became an assistant another 15 years. From 2004-2008 he was head wrestling coach at Mt. Olive Middle School.

In 2003, he was named National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant of the Year.

As if that wasn’t enough, in 1973 Bob took over the recreation program as coach at Mt. Olive and continues to this day. He would be one of the founders of the Lakeland Wrestling Club in 1980, as well as the Morris County Wrestling Tournament. He also made time to coach for the USA Wrestling Club at Mt. Olive High.

As a high school head wrestling coach he produced 37 district champions, seven region champions and had seven state place winners. His Mt. Olive team won districts in 1983, qualified for sectionals several times and in 2002 won a Group 2 state sectional.

He is currently on the New Jersey Chapter Board of Governors for the NWC Hall of Fame committee.

Bob and his wife reside in Netcong. They have four daughters.

Tony built his wrestling career in Brick Township. He was the first wrestling coach at Brick Memorial High, where he coached and taught for 32 years, and he graduated from Brick Township High School

In 22 years he coached the Mustangs to 317 victories, including a pair of seasons when they finished No. 1 in the state (1986 and 1994). His teams won 19 district titles, 12 Shore Conference titles (including 10 straight), 10 South Jersey sectionals, five Group 3 titles and in 1993 won Beast of the East.

He added one other Shore Conference championship as an assistant coach at St. John Vianney in 2018, where he is currently an administrator.

At Memorial he turned out 120 individual district champs, 44 regional champs, 42 state medalists and four state champions.

His high school career at Brick Township resulted in a district and regional championship, and a fourth place finish in the states.

From there he went on to Bloomsburg State College. A 1980 graduate, Tony finished with a record of 112-28-2, was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion, a three-time Division I qualifier and in 1980 was All-America with a seventh place finish at Nationals.

This will be his seventh Hall of Fame membership. He is also in Brick Township’s High School HOF, Memorial’s, Region 6, Bloomsburg State, South Jersey’s and the Eastern Wrestling League. He is also a member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the USWA.

In 2018 he was awarded the Harry E. Lake award for outstanding contributions to New Jersey wrestling. The Star-Ledger named him Coach of the Decade for the 1990s.

In addition to wrestling, Tony also coached football, gymnastics, cross country and track and field. He was also Director of Athletics at Brick Township High from 2003-05.
