Workshop Report

The workshop on computational science was first of its kind to be held at the

University of Delhi. The workshop was devoted to exposing recent advances in

the application of computational techniques in various fields of science and

technology. A large number of participants from various organisations attended

the workshop; the total number was 136 excluding the students (9) and staff (13)

of Swami Shraddhanand College. The participation was only by prior registration

and was not restricted to those who have experience and interest on

Computational Science. The break-up of the participants is as follows:

The workshop was inaugurated by the Prof. A.K. Bhakshi, Director, ILLL,

University of Delhi, Prof. A.G. Vedeshwar, Head, Department of Physics &

Astrophysics, University of Delhi, Prof. Ajay Gupta, Director, DUCC,

University of Delhi, Sh. Vijender Mann, Chairman, GB, SSNC, University of

Delhi chaired the inaugural function.

It was held with full seven days of technical talks, oral presentations, laboratory

sessions based on the presentations. Based on the theme of the workshop, the

organizers were able to bring the scientists and students working in different fields

on the same platform. Attendance at the workshop was enormous. The workshop

focused on several specific themes:

Computational Mathematics

Application of Information Technology in Indian Agriculture System

Bioinformatics

Application of Numerical techniques in weather prediction.

Solution of Diffusion Equations

GNU plot, LYX & Scilab

Simulation

Modeling

Python

Various computer software applications

In addition to technical sessions mentioned above, there were two special sessions

in the workshop, first was the inaugural session, where a key note address was

presented on the theme of the workshop by Dr. D. Preeven , Scientist, Ministry of

Earth Science, and second one was the valedictory session, where the participants

openly put their remarks about the outcome of the workshop. Each session ended

with a discussion on various aspects of that route. The presentations made in the

workshop have been posted in the following website:

and can be accessed from there.

The detailed schedule of the workshop is enclosed in Appendix II.

Large attendance in the workshop led to some changes in the mechanics. The

technical sessions were held at the famous DS KOTHARI Memorial hall (known

as L-2) of the Department of Physics and astrophysics, University of Delhi, and the

practical sessions were held at the Delhi University Computer Center. At the Delhi

University Computer Center the participants were asked to solve the assignments

given to them during the talks on Various Software e.g. GNU plot, Knopix, SPSS,

Data modeling , Oracle etc. It is worth mentioning that the participants were

served lunch at the Delhi University Guest House, which is merely a ten minutes

walk from the Physics Department and the Department of Physics.

This Workshop was sponsored by many agencies: CSIR, DBT, DST, DRDO,

INSA, Ministry of IT & C, and the UGC. The organizers and participants of the

workshop warmly thank these agencies for their support for the workshop.
