TO-DAY'S EVENTSThe Brighton and Hove Motor Club bid you a warm welcome

once again to our National Brighton Speed Trials. This year we had severe financial problems mainly owing to

the national enemy Inflation and at one time the decision was takento postpone the event for 1975. However, due to the magnificentresponse by so many, and the generosity of our sponsors we wereable to present this unique and exciting event.

The Committee of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club wouldlike to publicly acknowledge the expressions of goodwill andfinancial assistance from so many people, but in particular theefforts of John and Wendy Gillham of Gillham Motors, whoseinitiative brought about a joint sponsorship by them and MazdaCars, together with Shell who have supported us for so many years. We also have a further sponsor in Messrs. Fribourg and Treyer, andin this respect would like to acknowledge the splendid efforts on ourbehalf by Glyn Giusti who is entered here today.

We trust you will enjoy the varied and interesting entries thatare competing.

To forecast a winner for the event is of course always difficullalthough David Purley, last year's record breaker must be con-sidered hot favourite, together with other entrants in Class 14.

THE MOTOR-CYCLESThe Incorporated Sprint Organisation (ISO) are again proud

to be co-operating with the Brighton and Hove Motor Club inorganising the motor-cycle entry. ISO also organise the now famousWorld Records weekend at R.A.F. Elvington, near York, and theBrighton/Kilo is possibly the last opportunity for many riders totest their machines over the kilometre distance before this year'sWorld Records Weekend on 30th September/Ist October. TheBrighton course itself presents more than just the challenge of timeand speed, as riding ability and handling are at a premium due tothe narrowness of the Drive.

The machines running today present a wide variation fromvintage racing machines such as that of Dick Knight's 1928BroughSuperior. still capable of modern speeds, Len Coles' 1929 Brook-lands "Bayley Coles" Douglas ridden by Phil Mazano which stillwas capabJe of a third place in the 750 class last year and also anexample of one of this year's Morgan entry, that of Peter Atkinson,a 1928 2-speeder fronted by a 1096C.c. J.A.P. engine.

Of the modern flyers note shou.d be made of the 350 c.c.supercharged B.S.A. single of Jim Balchin, a real record buster.developed over some eight years by Jim this machine is the currentholder of both the! and kilo standing start world records. times as

follows: t. 10.88sec.; kilo. 21.00 sec.; the terminal speed of thissingle cylinder machine at the end of a quarter mile is in the orderof 145 m.p.h. and we may expect that speed to be clearly exceededat the end of the Madeira Drive kilo. Last year's Dolphin Trophywinner. Tony Weeden. will again be out for blood and anotherwin. for his 500 blown Triumph is vastly improved since last year.terminal speeds on the more usual t-mile hitting near 160 m.p.h.

The Brighton kilo, the oldest sprint course in the world stillin use, still presents a terrific challenge to both man and machine.although the course is a straight line one, to fire off a superchargedmotor-cycle running on a fuel content of alcohol and nitro methaneproducing in many cases power outputs in excess of 100 b.h.p. andto ride without the benefit of rear springing at speeds in excess of150 m.p.h. takes more than just grit and determination. to Jet gothe clutch at nearly full power and to keep all in that essentialstraight line takes a special type of skill and balance. and to holdand control a very light machine in and over the final yards at aflat-out speed takes a real determination.

1S.0. on behalf of all the competitors hope that everyone willenjoy this year's speed trial and hope that the motor-cycles willprovide you all with both interest, entertainment. and excitement.
