As a fancy I find the world of purebred dogs to be in a tryingtime. Rights are being stripped and agendas are beingpushed upon us at every turn. As members of the nationalbreed club it is our job to educate those around us when wefind they are misinformed and moving in a direction that isdetrimental to the fancy. Remember this as you shareinformation on your social media. Recently I saw a fanciershare information about emptying the cages at circus andshook my head thinking, the next step will be emptying thecrates in our homes.

In 2017 we have the MSCC national being held onVancouver Island, it is a lovely time of year hear on theisland and would be a worthwhile trip for those of you whohave not experienced the west coat. It is in conjunction witha circuit of shows where a plethora of points are available. Ilook forward to helping Sandi Malcom make this anexcellent event. I am sure any help that is offered fromacross the country in any way you can would be worthwhile.Perhaps at this time we could start thinking about raffleideas, or gifts. Take the time now to think about what you can do for the club from afar. We are alwaysbest when we come together as one.

I would like to thank Kay Deveyrac for her service to the club and look forward to working with her and allof the members of both the executive and our members across the country.

Breed Standard Committee Report – Kate McMillan

Background: This committee was struck as a product of existing motion to create an illustrated breedstandard. During discussion, it was noted that the current breed standard is silent on certain aspects ofconstruction, and might also require updating in other areas. The committee was to report back in July. Itwas decided to invite all members of the Board to serve on this committee, along with another memberwho's a licensed CKC judge. (He declined as did one or two of our Board members who cited personalreasons). I was appointed to the Chair.

A number of attempts were made to spark meaningful discussion, but it's evident from the lack ofparticipation and failure for that discussion to move forward, that there's currently little interest inrevising the breed standard. There was also concern expressed that opening the standard to revisionsmight invite CKC demands to include the undocked tail.

I hereby request the Committee be dissolved and the motions to a) review the Breed Standard and b)create an Illustrated Standard be tabled.

Motion #2 07 2016: Vicki Stephens moved the review of the Breed Standard and the creation of anIllustrated Standard be tabled indefinitely. Elaine Allen second. Carried.

After some discussion about what type of sponsorship would bewithin appropriate bounds, the motion was carried. However, Petsecure then informed us the timetablefor sponsorship of the National had expired, but would still be interested in sponsorship of future events.

It was a very successful event with a total entry of 23 in regular classes. We had a quality entryincluding dogs from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,New York and Georgia. It was a beautiful day and all of the dogs and exhibitors handled theheat and humidity well.

The GSCC, SSCC and MSCC joined forces to run the joint national specialties"SchnauzaCananza" which included the national specialties of each club and then the 3National BOB winners competed for the title of Best Schnauzer and Specialty.

We decided that we would like to hire a schnauzer specialist independently from the All BreedShow for this special event, and all agreed John Constantine would be an excellent choice. Hekindly waived his judging fee so the 3 clubs split his expenses. Our sweeps judge Allison JonesDVM waived all expenses and fees. As a thank you gift, John received 4 wine glasses etchedwith a single schnauzer head and his favourite bottle of wine and Allison received 4 martiniglasses, the rim etched with schnauzer heads. Each gift included a SchnauzaCananza decal.

The $10 rebate to club members was very successful and helped to boost our total entry by atotal of 10 dogs, the 5 dogs who were absent for the National were also absent for all or most ofthe shows that weekend.

The grooming seminar by Kate McMillan was attended by 16 people both attending with a dogand as observers and was really well received and very much appreciated by all, Kate kindlydonated $250 back to the club.

Our SchnauzaCananza decals sold out in minutes for a total profit of $55, Kate McMillandonated the cost of printing the decals.

We went with a red white and black theme which were the colours of our SchnauzaCananzalogo, and planned our prizes which were Chris Christensen products around this theme. BOBand BOS won a black ring side tote bag, BOW a leather sheer roll, select dog and bitch aleather stripping knife roll, winners dog and bitch a red slicker, reserve winners dog and bitch, abottle of shampoo and best puppy a chalk brush and a container of chalk.

Vicki Boechler kindly donated four tin pendants which were given out as part of the BOB andBOS prizes and Best in Sweeps and Best Opposite in sweeps, she also donated the prize forour lone entry in performance events. Vicki also made an exquisite quilt banner for the MSCC, Iwish I had taken a better picture, it can be seen under the ribbons on the prize table.

Our net expenses were $965.78 and our net credits were $904.52 (not including trophydonations) for a total cost of $61.26.

The final results were:

Nov. 24th, Montville, Maine — More thana week ago, Merrie Bettler and herhusband John faced every pet owner'sworst fear: Their beloved miniatureschnauzer, Moxie, had gone missing.

Earlier in the day Nov. 16, Moxie and herbrother Pepsi were playing outside whenthey dashed off into the nearby woods, perhaps in pursuit of some elusivewoodland critter. Merrie Bettler, who wasnearby, didn't think much of it at the time, assuming the two dogs would return inshort order.

Missing four days, miniature schnauzer reunited with family

However, when a few hours passed and neither returned, Bettler began to getworried. Then, that afternoon, Pepsi showed up at home. He was in rough shape, she said, unable to open his eyes and would vomit numerous times over the courseof the evening. While glad to see one of her dogs back, Bettler grew increasinglyanxious as Moxie's absence stretched into the evening.

Unbeknownst to the Bettlers, Pepsi's condition would later shine a light on his sister'ssudden and dramatic disappearance.

In the woods a short distance from the Bettler's home is a honeycomb network oftunnels, which are situated on an abutting neighbor's land. Those tunnels, Bettlerbelieves, are the work of a groundhog.

When Moxie and Pepsi ran into the woods that Wednesday morning, quite likely inpursuit of a flock of wild turkeys that nest near the tunnels, the two dogs made theirway into the tunnels. Pepsi was able to find his way to freedom, probably only afterdigging through sections of collapsed tunnel, Bettler said, but Moxie remained in thesubterranean maze.

And she would remain there for four days, while above ground her owners searcheddesperately for the schnauzer.

The Bettlers handed out flyers and put up posters to alert area residents to Moxie'sdisappearance but those efforts didn't yield any leads. The fact that no one had seenMoxie did strike Bettler as being a little odd, but she chalked it up to the fact theschnauzer wouldn't approach a strange person.

As a couple of days passed and her dog still had not turned up, Bettler said shestarted to lose hope that she would ever see Moxie again. That's when Bettler'sfriend brought her husband's golden retriever rescue dog in training to aid in thesearch. The two women headed into the woods to an area frequented by wild turkeyson the off chance that the German Shepherd might pick up Moxie's trail.

Once they got to the area, the dog discovered a small hole that previously had beenoverlooked. The retriever also acted like she was picking up the scent of somethingin the hole, Bettler said, but the two women initially thought it might just be awoodland critter. Bettler did yell into the hole in the hope Moxie was inside, but whenshe didn't hear a response, the two friends moved on in their search.

However, as Bettler thought about it more, she began to wonder if perhaps Moxiemight have found her way underground. She called one of her daughters, who saidshe would head over to the house later that evening.

By this time, it was about 11 p.m. Nov. 19. Bettler, along with her two daughters, StacyBettler and Jessica Pilley, and their friend Maranda Wellman, headed into the woods tothe hole. After securing permission from the land owner, the group of women began todig to expand the hole and that's when Bettler said they all heard a faint whine.

Bettler then hurried back to the house to get her husband and also to call MontvilleFire Department. It was after midnight when firefighters arrived at the property andbegan setting up large lights to illuminate the area.

John Bettler was also able to use a back hoe on his tractor to dig around the holes inthe area. Looking back on the rescue effort, Bettler said she was nervous that in theeffort to free Moxie, the digging could have collapsed a tunnel. Further complicatingthe operation was the fact that Moxie could be heard in one area but then hersounds would come from a different area.

After several hours of digging without success, at about 5 a.m. Nov. 20, Bettler'sdaughter finally was able to reach into one of the tunnels and pull Moxie free.

Despite being gone for four days, Bettler said Moxie was in good condition — shewasn't dehydrated and was “toasty warm” when she was pulled out of the tunnel.

Now reunited with her family, the scrappy schnauzer is no worse for her ordeal, according to her owners. Still, Bettler said she's going to keep a closer eye on Moxieto avoid such an incident in the future. Bettler said she and her family are also verygrateful to the Montville Fire Department for assisting in the rescue effort over theweekend.
