General Marking Principles for Advanced Higher Graphic Communication This information is provided to help you understand the general principles you must apply when marking candidate responses to questions in this Paper. These principles must be read in conjunction with the Detailed Marking Instructions, which identify the key features required in candidate responses.

(a) Marks for each candidate response must always be assigned in line with these General Marking Principles and the Detailed Marking Instructions for this assessment.

(b) Marking should always be positive. This means that, for each candidate response, marks are accumulated for the demonstration of relevant skills, knowledge and understanding: they are not deducted from a maximum on the basis of errors or omissions.

(c) For each candidate response, the following provides an overview of the marking principles. Refer to the Detailed Marking Instructions for further guidance on how these principles should be applied.

(i) Questions that ask candidates to describe

Candidates must provide a statement or structure of characteristics and/or features. This should be more than an outline or a list. Candidates may refer to, for instance, a concept, experiment, situation, or facts in the context of and appropriate to the question. Candidates will normally be required to make the same number of factual/appropriate points as there are marks available.

(ii) Questions that ask candidates to explain

Candidates must generally relate cause and effect and/or make relationships between things clear. These will be related to the context of the question or a specific area within a question.

(ii) Questions that ask candidates to compare

Candidates must generally demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the similarities and/or differences between, for instance, things, methods, or choices. These will be related to the context of the question or a specific area within a question.

(d) Candidates can respond to any question using text, sketching, annotations or combinations where they prefer. No marks shall be awarded for the quality of sketching. Marking will relate only to the information being conveyed.

Detailed Marking Instructions for each question SECTION 1

Question Expected response Max mark Additional guidance

1 a Descriptions of the requirements will include the following characteristics:

• The document must be created with a software program commonly used in the printing industry and exported in a commonly used file format, such as EPS, PDF.

• The document must use the correct colour setup/space. If printing a colour document, all graphics should be converted to CMYK. (If it is a spot colour document, the colours to be used by the printer must be specified in the digital file).

• The layout must be created at the correct and final size to be printed, and the document size in the desktop publishing program should match the size of the final printed piece (no scaling).

• Text or graphics, that are to bleed off the page of the final printed piece, should be extended off the document boundary in the digital file (normally to around 3 mm or 1/8 inch).

• Fonts used in the digital file must be converted to vector graphic format or be included in the final digital package sent to the printer.

• Raster or image files are originally created at high-resolution settings (300 DPI) — no scaling.

6 Six different points made in the descriptions, at 1 mark each.

Question Expected response Max mark Additional guidance

1 b Explanations of the advantages of PDF file types are likely to include:

• type fonts and images can be embedded within the file, so the recipient can see them as intended

• PDF files are compact — useful for emailing and reducing storage needs

• PDF files are platform-independent (can be opened in a number of platforms other than the one it was produced in)

• PDF files can be viewed in web browser platforms • PDF files also retain Pantone/CMYK tones exactly

4 Any four correct advantages at 1 mark each.

1 c Explanations of the issues with conversion, will make references to the facts that:

• many colours on a computer monitor in RGB, cannot be reproduced accurately on a printing press using the CMYK process colour inks

• CMYK colour space is much smaller than the RGB colour space

2 Two relevant explanations at 1 mark each.

1 d Descriptions of the advantages of vector over raster, are likely to include references to:

• much smaller file size compared to large raster images • can infinitely zoom in on arcs/curves/circles/splines and

they remain smooth • zooming, lines and curves will not get wider

proportionally • the parameters of objects are saved and can be later

modified — this means that modifications will not reduce the quality of a drawing

4 Four descriptions at 1 mark each.

Question Expected response Max mark Additional guidance

1 e Explanations of screen grabbing disadvantages, are likely to make references to:

• Screen capture saves an image only at the same size as it is presented on the screen.

• Although this is relative to the resolution of the screen/monitor, screen capture is normally low-resolution (72 ppi) and will result in poor print quality by either pixelation of the image itself or the image being small.

• Screen capture will also download everything on screen, not just the image, meaning cropping will have to be used to remove unwanted details (additional photo-editing software would be required to do this).

3 Three explanations at 1 mark each.

1 f Any explanations will make references to: • Copyright issues of the images:

Any photographs for images may belong to others and not the magazine owner(s). They may not have the right to reproduce them in subsequent publications or edit and republish images as they wish.

OR

Any third party who wishes to use an image from the magazine can only legally do so if permission is obtained from the original owner(s).

OR

The digital version may face copyright infringement caused by people being able to copy and paste digital content from the website.

OR

Any other suitable explanation.

2 Any two correct explanations from either or both issues at 1 mark each

Question Expected response Max mark Additional guidance

• Copyright issues of the publication:Content in magazines is sometimes contributed by freelance journalists, authors, and photographers; therefore the magazine may require to purchase or lease the rights to content.

OR

Images, templates, photographs, designs are only copyright protected for a specific (or varying) period of time. After this time elapses, there is no legal protection on the publication.

OR

Any other suitable explanation.

2 a Descriptions will make references to:

• two living areas consisting of: - bedroom 1/kitchen/lounge/veranda - bedroom 2/veranda/TV room/patio

• communal area consisting of the lounge and kitchen access to outdoors from both properties, through double doors

3 Three descriptions at 1 mark each.

2 b Descriptions will make references to the images:

• showing/communicating locations of different features in the garden

• helping the client to visualise the ways in which the space might be used

• showing/communicating the materials that might be used in the solid landscaping

• showing possible colour scheme/colour combinations • showing possible planting schemes

required • indicate where services will be required • support pricing/cost and labour calculations for

estimates/bills of quantity • indicate where material junctions occur/materials

converge or meet • any other relevant way

3 Three descriptions at 1 mark each.

2 d Descriptions will make references to the ways in which a 3D CAD model could be used to evaluate aspects of the design, such as evaluating/determining/calculating:

• flood risk • the strength of a part of the structure using FEA • ventilation and extraction, thermal efficiency • lighting and illumination levels • any other appropriate aspect

3 Three descriptions at 1 mark each.
