“Music is my raison d’etre. Really, it’s that simple. It’s why I choreograph dances. It’s why I love Walt Disney, it’s why I whistle constantly, it’s why I started a company and built a building and established a school in Brooklyn dedicated to the form and function of music and dance.”

Mark Morris

Personal Quote

Dance | Music | Legacy

”Many f irst-class choreographers begin as superb dancers....But in certain respects this is an unlucky combination...the dancer-choreographer is likely to choose choreography over his or her dance, and then to resent the company…. and then there’s Mark Morris and his group of friends.’’

Joan Acocella

Biographer’s Note

Dance | Music | Legacy

Mikhail Baryshnikov

Morris’s inspiration is music but his works would not be possible in their final incarnation without the collaborators

around him, most of them his friends.

Dance | Music | Legacy

“In his work and in life, he is very much full of joy.”

Mark Morris

National Museum of Dance Saratoga Springs, NY

The exhibition will show the work, collaborations and institution behind director/choreographer Mark Morris, legendary for his

musicality and keen on the simplicity and sensitivity the corporeal musical experience offered by the live experience brings. All large

quotes embedded within the exhibition will be taken from previously written material in an effort to focus on two equal points of view:
