1 National Miniature Pylon Racing Association Since 1965 AMA Affiliated October 2005 Secretar y-T reasurer Notes Hi, Gang, This article will be short as I didn’t know that I would be writing this; the newsletter is late, and it is already getting pretty big with some great inputs from our district and points vice-presidents as well as other inputs and the ballot for 2006 officers. The first thing that I want to do is to thank the district vice-presidents for continuing to represent you and the districts and to thank all of you who have offered to help next year if I am president. I’m sure that I will be calling on many of you for help. We need to work together. Some have said that the NMPRA is dysfunctional and not focused as if the NMPRA were a live entity that breathes and thinks. I contend that “we” are the NMPRA and “we” make it is what it is. I can’t make the NMPRA “better” without your help; let me hear your ideas. I also want to thank Randy Bridge for serving as Q-40 Points Coordinator for the past several years. Good job, man! Also a special thank you to Joanne Coffey for volunteering to be the new Q-40 Points Coordinator. Please see that the Q-40 race results get to her promptly. Joanne can be reached at Coff e [email protected] . I would like to be able to post on the NMPRA website the Q-40 and Q-500 standings, both 424 and 428, on a regular basis; the only way this can happen is if the results are sent in to the point coordinators as races are completed. If we can do this, everyone can track how he is doing throughout the year. District 5 will have a new vice-president for 2006; thanks to Dave Norman for serving in that position and a big thanks to Dan Kane for volunteering take the position for 2006. I also want to thank Randy Smith; Randy has agreed to chair a committee to review the Race Procedure Guide and update it as necessary. One of the areas they will be addressing is how many rounds and how many contestants are required to constitute an official race for national points. Another area to look at is the standardization of lane markings. I look forward to seeing the results of the committee’s efforts. The 2005 NMPRA Championships is over; congratulations to Randy Bridge for winning the race. The full results are listed elsewhere in this newsletter. If you missed the race, you really missed out – the weather was great, the racing was outstanding, and the banquet was a great time with lots of neat door prizes. Bruce Coffey was the big winner in the door prize category winning a big hug from Nicole Kane; she wanted to draw another name after we had given out the last door prize. Other winners were Chuck Anderson, winning a new Jett Q-500 engine, and Randy Bridge, winning a new Polecat. Thanks to all who entered the NMPRA raffle. Congratulations to Pat Galarneault on winning the NMPRA raffle. Pat chose a new Polecat for his prize. There has been quite a bit of talk that we need to promote the AMA 424 event. I think Bill Vargas made a significant step in the right direction as the NMPRA is providing new Shotgun Q-500 airplanes to the top three in 424 this year. These airplanes will be going out as soon as I receive the final results. We will also be sending NMPRA shirts to the top 20 in 424, just as we do for 422 and 428. We’re recognizing AMA 424 as an event in itself and equal to AMA 428 and AMA 422; what more do we need to do?

Daughter, Cathy, lives nearby inApopka, Florida, with husbandMichael and works for Drake,Beam and Morin as a ContractsAdministrator.

Son, Todd, married to Laura andfather to our belovedgrandchildren, Taylor 9 andConnor 3 1/2, resides in Mason,Ohio, where he works for I-Drivein the advertising industry.

Nancy will remain in the WinterSprings, Florida, home and stay intouch with our friends throughlocal contests when possible.Nancy has a very good supportgroup led by Bob and Patty Violettand family. They were pillars ofstrength through Cliff ’s illness andhospitalization. This group alsoincludes Bob and Linda Brogdon,Vern and Betsy Smith, and Garyand Gardenia Freeman, and herBook Club Buddies and neighbors.

We cherish the friendships wehave made world-wide in thiswonderful hobby.

District 1- Travis Flynn

Hello District One. Wow! I can’t believethe summer is just about over. What aseason, and for our lucky district wearen’t quite finished. We still have twomonths of racing to plan for.

The last couple of months we havehad a few races to report on. Firstthough I think we need to congratulateRichard Verano of our district forplacing 4th at the F3D worldchampionships. Richard, a past worldchampion, showed the Europeans wewill be back on top. Good job to all theUS team members.

Saturday August 6th we had a Basinrace which unfortunately had asmaller than average turn-out. We stillhad some great racing with someexcellent 10 lap times. Especially in424 with Gale Enstad again showingus how its done. A 1:27:41 is a greataccomplishment and I know howhappy he was to do it. In 428 we hadsome new faces do really well. BobPonek with his first 428 win and ClarkLeadbetter with fast time. TheseCastaic guys are really taking over.

On Sunday the 7th in 424 TomSkavinsky dethroned Gale and got anice first place trophy. For 428 and 422it was time for the Jett boys to take tophonors. Jacob Raquet took first placeand fast time in 428; I think he also isa first time 428 winner. In 422 Jacob’smentor Bruce Coffey also received afirst place trophy. I bet these guys hada good drive home!

The next race was not part of DistrictOne but it is part of the West CoastSeries so there were a lot of us thatmade the trip up to Medford, Oregon.

Saturday August 20th Mike Delpontecame out of retirement to win 424.Gary Schmidt got first place and fasttime in 428. Fred Burgdorf won 422and also got the fast time. AfterSaturday’s event we had a nice BBQput on by the Delponte’s. Mike andJudy were fantastic hosts and did agreat job of feeding all of us.

Sunday the 21st Gale Enstad madehis come back in 424 and Fred tookfirst place in 428 and 422.

The field in Medford is outstanding.The club was a little overwhelmed withall the entries but after the first roundthey got the bugs out and put on agreat contest. There is a chance for

our 2006 NMPRA championship raceto be held at this field. I for one thinknobody would be disappointed.

There is one sad thing I want to writeabout. At the Medford race, like atmany races, there was some carnage.Unfortunately while looking for debris,a fellow racer found a 424 engine. Thisengine had been modified with crankcase pressure drilled into thebackplate. I hope this modifier is anNMPRA member and is reading thisnow. Cheating in any of our events isbad enough, but in 424 where we aretrying to get new guys involved, whatkind of an example are you showing?Practice! Practice! You can win raceswith your thumbs!

I had one weekend off; then I was offto Toledo, Ohio, to try out for the USF5D team. Over the last few years a lotof you have seen some of my planes.This year the rules have changed andthe new planes are much larger withwing spans around 54 inches. DanKane had a fast time of 66 secondsshowing these electrics are prettydarn fast. Dan Kane, Gary FreemanJr., and myself will go and representthe US in Romania next summer atthe 2006 World Championships. Overthe next year I will be bringing some ofmy F5D stuff out so you guys cancheck it out. Maybe you too might beinterested in racing electrics.

The next weekend was what soundedlike the final JR Gold Cup Series racein Arlington. Unfortunately, we did notget as much support from our districtas we did last year. Tim Lime, LeeUlinger, Fred Burgdorf and myself didmake the trip. Fred won and I came insecond, which was the exact samefinishing order as last year.

Hi everyone. Since my last columnwe’ve certainly been doing lots ofracing. There’s been a lot of action inand around District 3. The final twodistrict races were held at PrinceAlbert, Saskatchewan and Saskatoon,site of the district championship race.Some fast times for our district wereposted in Prince Albert, and greatweather and stiff competition werefound in Saskatoon. The seasonchampionship was won by RoyAndrassy in Quickie 500 and by DougHouston in Q40. The District GrandChampion declared by highest totalcombined Quickie and Q40 points wasalso Doug Houston. Great job Dougy!!! Cecil’s wife was getting tired ofdusting the championship trophyanyway. Now it’s Jan’s turn…. Ya right!Harold Sattler and Zenon Dragan fromour district represented Canada at theF3D world championships in France.Richard Moldenhauer, Henry Redekopand Mabo Amano attended as callersand team manager. With only twopilots registered, the team standingswere lower than they might have beenotherwise. Individually, the guys werehappy with their performance and a lotwas learned once again. Thisknowledge is always a valuable take-home to the district.

Six district pilots traveled to thenorthwest district 2 to attend theArlington JR Gold Cup race. A greattime was had by all once again. TheNW PROPS crew did a great jobrunning the contest. I have to say thatI think that only Mike Condon and theNats crew run a show as good as thePROPS. Great job, guys and gals. Twoyears in a row now I have failed tothank the Starter, Jon Packer, and andhis assistant, Eric Ide. These two guys

did a great job at the start line whichresulted in very few reflys. Their witand humor helped to ease the tensionon the start line as well. Great job,guys, and thanks. I was very pleasedto come home from Arlington with thirdplace right behind Travis Flynn andFred Burgdorf. I dusted off my caller,Jim Henderson, and we managed tokeep our noses clean. Thanks Jim,you da man!!!

Roy Andrassy and caller DougHouston posted a new Canadian fasttime record in Arlington in Q40 with atime of 1:02.09. Roy, Mike Helsel and Iwent at it for ten laps and we allsurvived. I turned my fastest personaltime with a 1:04 and came third!!!Damn, I hate that. Well, you know youare in fast company….. Roy and his“passion pink pole cat” bettered hisprevious Canadian fast time set earlierthis summer in Regina,Saskatchewan, which was a 1:04.22

Wrapping up the pylon action for thisyear was the F5D electric pylon teamtrials for the 2006 worldchampionships to be held in Ploiesti,Romania next summer. Threeparticipants met in Calgary armed withbatteries, chargers, power suppliesand all that other crap that electricsneed. After five rounds with one throwaway race, Peter Thannhauser postedthe lowest total time. Roy Andrassyand Terenece Palaschuk were secondand third respectively. It’s good to seeelectric pylon showing a presence inthe district. This keeps racing freshand exciting as it could be the future ofpylon some time down the road.

Winter is well on its way, so find agymnasium and fly a Foamy. It’s goodfor your pylon health.

Racing season is growing short up inour neck of the woods; it’s nearlybuilding and prime trash-talkingseason. I received the following write-up from the WIPRO group across theborder and thought I would share. It isthese types of grass roots racing

organizations that funnel future 428and 422 racers.

2005 WIPRO SEASON ENDS WITHPLENTY OF DRAMA!

The Wisconsin/Illinois Pylon RacingOrganization held its 7th and finalcontest of the 2005 season onSeptember 10, and it played out to bea dandy! Up for grabs was 5th yearhonors of obtaining the coveted “LeadGoose” traveling trophy, and since noone had ever won it twice, the racewas on to be the first repeat winner….or be a first time winner.Quick history on the Lead Goosetrophy….it was built by Mark Warningin 2001 as a traveling trophy to bepresented to the person that “mostconsistently leads the flock around thepylons”, i.e.: our season champion. Wefigure that out by simply keeping trackof how many contestants you placedahead of at the end of each contest. Ina contest with 11 people, finishing firstnets you 11 points, second is 10, ondown to last place which even awardsyou 1 valuable Lead Goose point. Wetake your best 6 race finishes to figureout your points, allowing everyone tomiss an event or pick your best 6 outof 7.Thanks to Ernie and Jim Nikodemfor letting us steal this system from outon the East coast; it works well for us.

The year started out tight with all theformer winners at the top of thestandings, including previous LeadGooser’s Darwin Larson, JimNikodem, Mark Warning, and BernieVanderleest. Also in the fray earlywere Mick Warning, Orv Steinmetz,and the combat duo of Mike and RickBohlmann. Going into the 7th racehosted by the Calumet Flyers, it wasdown to basically 2 pilots: Bernie andMick. They were tied with 50 points atthe top of standings with a five pointcushion over the tie between Jim andMark.

Saturday turned out to be a terrific daywith a slight cross-course breeze anda bit on the hot & humid side. We had12 pilots together for what we knewwas going to be a competitive day ofsparring.The theme of the day was setearly when an ultra-fast Carl Dvoraktook his quickie into the dirt on lap 2 ofthe first heat with an apparent radioproblem. Things weren’t much betterin Heat 2 when Jim grabbed the tallgrass on launch and snubbed theengine. Bernie got to win an easy

District NewsDistrict 5 cont’drace, but then knocks the engine offhis #1 plane on landing! To finishRound 1, Darwin does a midair slapwith up-and-comer Doug Dowlingcoming out of turn 3. At pylon 1, Dougmakes the turn but Darwin’s v-tailgoes flat and he augers a new furrowin the hay field. OK, got that roundbehind us….3 flights and a quarter ofthe starting airplanes are in the trashbarrel. Take a deep breath; let’scontinue racing.

Heat 4 starts with Jim sticking hisplane in the tall weeds again (rottencross wind!) and veteran GeorgeReynolds stuffing his racer in the dirtafter performing a gorgeous lowaltitude wing over on the take-off roll.On lap 8 Orv’s firewall comes looseand he is forced to land giving Rick aneasy win. Halfway through Heat 5,Mike blows one in going around 3 forno apparent reason. What is going onhere?! Finally in Heat 6, all 4 planesmake it to the finish line and Mick issitting on a fast time of 1:36.5 whichhe hopes will hold out for the day. Bythe way, 1 of those valuable LeadGoose points is awarded to the fasttime holder of the day, so that pointcould be huge!

Heat 7 marks the start of Round 3,and Bernie finds himself only grabbing2 points as both Mark and Darwin beathim to the finish line in an ultra-closeheat. That’s why we classify them asbackup planes; they’re just not asquick as the #1. Sometime duringHeat 8 Rick has a carb loosen up inflight which forces him to land. Heat 9has Jim losing a muffler and limpingaround to finish 2nd to a veryconsistent Doug. Finally, time to breakfor lunch!

Lunch in years past has been a chiliwar between Mick’s Chicken InfernoChili and George’s TexMexMix fromthe Fires of Hell. It was tamed a bit thisyear with a fantastic shredded beefsandwich from the kitchen of Mark. Ofcourse, he encouraged the use of alayer of Woeber’s horseradishsandwich spread which added the firea few were looking for. Eat a couple ofthem babies for lunch and then trystanding out there and concentrate onnothing but racing….tough to do!So at halftime, Mark and Mick are tied

with perfect scores of 12 pointsapiece, and Bernie and Doug are each3 points behind. Bernie has prettymuch conceded the Lead Goosetrophy to Mick at this point, but thesecond half of the contest was yet tohappen.

The start of Round 4 has Mickdaydreaming at the start of the heat,and his plane goes dead left after thelaunch. After losing it and saving it 4times, he drills it in the dirt to score abig 0! Newcomer 14-year-old MalcolmReynolds makes the others pay bytaking the heat win. Heat 11 providesBernie with the winning 4 points heneeds, and now Mick is the one on theoutside. Mick will probably have tobank on the 1 point he will receive forfast time to win the trophy; nicethought until Darwin pushes Mark to asmoking fast 1:34.2 in Heat 12.

Round 5 starts with Mark addinganother bullet to his score with a heatvictory. Next heat has Bernie edgingout Jim for the victory by .2 seconds.The final heat in Round 5 has Mickfighting a nasty pitch problem with hisbackup plane and finishing second toDoug. The year will come down to thelast heat of the day, with Bernieleading Mick by 2 points.Heat 16 starts the final round with Jimhitting his normal rhythm and postinga close 1 second victory over Darwin.Mark completes Heat 17 with anotherclose victory over Mike and Malcolmand finishes up with a perfect daypoint total of 24 plus fast time! Heat 18features the head-to-head battle forthe Lead Goose trophy between Mickand Bernie, along with crowd-favoriteDoug in there as the spoiler. Aftermaster-flagman Chuck Sauder dropsthe flag, the race is on to pylon 1.Bernie keeps his plane as low andstraight as possible, but actually dipsdown low enough to just catch thegrasses of the Calumet field, whichsnubs his engine and sends himsilently gliding toward 1! All Mick hasto do now is hold off that pesky Doug,and the race is his. Apparently thatwas enough dramatics for one day, asMick held on for the victory.

So the final constest of the WIPROseason ended up like this:

On September 10 and 11, the PrinceGeorges Radio Control Club hostedthe District VI Championship race for428 sponsored by the N.M.P.R.A. Atotal of 13 contestants including twoCanucks participated in the event.Dave Beazley served as both the CDand starter and did a great job ofofficiating.While not southern California weather,it wasn’t too humid, temps stayed inthe low 80’s and winds were out of thenorth, east and south, anywhere from2 to 15 knots, whenever it felt like it—welcome to Bowie.

I was delighted to see several non-composite designs competing. Onethat caught my eye that looked reallypromising (not to mention reasonablypriced) is the Pacemaker from LouisSchwab. His design will soon beavailable in a pre-sheeted balsa/foamwing version, or a Shotgun compositewing version. Either features an alllaser-cut built up fuselage with a verynicely engineered front end thatprovides a solid yet light-weightstructure for tying the engine to theentire airframe. Rick Moreland also entered a verylight, all-wood/foam variant of the FastWoody. Determined to build a light-weight airframe, it sported a no-frillsfinish of light glass cloth and cleardope. At practice the previous day itappeared to be measurably faster (by6-10 mph) than others, including myfleet, hitting one run between 1 and 2of 164 mph, and averaging around158. Unfortunately, at the contest itwas involved in a mid-air with WarrenGillette’s Neme-Q entering the #2 turnand came apart in a most hideousfashion.

Speaking of mid-airs, right after Rickand Warren tangled, Gene Bass’sNeme-Q (painted identical toWarren’s) collided with Michael Masi’sBird of Prey near the #3 pylon.Feathers and fibers went everywhere.

At the end of 6 rounds Dave Latshawas only one point down in first, I wasin second after cutting out (rememberthe variable winds?) in the 5th round,and John ‘Fast Woody’ Albritton was in3rd.

A quick poll was taken to determine ifthe contestants wanted to fly onSunday as scheduled or do all 10rounds on Saturday and call it acontest, we opted to finish onSaturday.

Unable to personally affect the leadermyself, as luck would have it, DaveLatsha had a bye run and ‘went for it’,so to speak. The next thing I saw wasDave pulling up off the course, no timeand a zero posted. Realizing it’s neverreally over until you finish the contest,when my bye run came up, I learnedfrom Dave and took it easy. JohnAlbritton also had a bye run and itlooked like a 1-2 finish for us until hisplane started to slow down, then theengine died. The nylon ball link on hiscarb had popped loose, and of courseat that point, the barrel only knows todo what vibration and the relative windtell it to do. Bummer. In a last ditcheffort to place well, Frank Donnelly puta hurt on him turning a 1:11 and gavehim another 2nd place finish.

With the last race for the season in thecan, we look back on a year that hasseen many different changesthroughout the country due to storms,the economy and more storms. Wehave also been personally affected bythe loss of our dear friend Cliff Telford.But now we must look forward to thefuture and the beginning of a newseason and the rebuilding of thoseareas hit hard by the storms. I havefaith and confidence that we willsoldier on and overcome all that hashappened, and become the better forit.

The Markham Park Pilot’s Association(MPPA) held the last race for District 7in Sunrise, FL. Both 424 and 428battled through the heat and a slightquartering tailwind to make the lastrace of the season very exciting withmany close races. Racers in both 424and 428 were commenting on how itnow seems that all of the racers areflying so well and fast that every raceis a tough race. I know that the newseason will also have some of the 424pilots move up to the 428 class.Results follow the article.

The first race of the season will beheld in Mulberry, FL, by the ImperialR/C Club on October 8-9th. I hopeeveryone looks forward to a goodseason and will try to attend as manyevents as possible. I know that with thehigher price of fuel, trips tend to be abit more expensive, but I hope thateveryone will still be able to make it tothe races so that we will continue tohave them. I am currently working withthe clubs to set up the rest of thisseason’s race dates so that planningfor them can be made well in advance.If you need to have more informationabout the Mulberry race, contact RickRuede at [email protected].

The next race that District 7 has on ourschedule is the Tangerine! Yes, we aregoing to have this race thanks toDennis O’Brien and James Glass forstepping up and taking the reins andgetting things planned and set up. Thedates will be December 9-11th. It willbe held at the Apopka field just as italways has been. I look forward toseeing everyone there as well sincewe will be running all three classes.The exact days vs. class has not been

set yet, but has been hinted at to run428 on Friday and 422 on Saturday &Sunday with 424 all three days. I willkeep you informed as I find out more.If you need more information, contactDennis at: [email protected].

What happeneddude? You can explain it to me inPhoenix over a beer. I wasn’t able toattend, due to the WorldChampionships. But I would certainlylike to extend my thanks to Strom Sr &Jr and all the course officials forvolunteering their time towards theevent.

As most everyone is aware, this will bethe last season for the JR Gold Cupseries. I’ve been very public about mydisappointment concerning thismatter. I think it’s a shame not toobtain the kind of support needed tokeep this alive. Losing Horizon as akey sponsor so willing to help out isdifficult to understand.

Most people will tend to believe that“advertising” is an easy target forblame. And most of us know that “wordof mouth” is the best source ofadvertising. So it would be fair toassume that there must have been abad taste in someone’s mouth thatspread like butter..? You can all be thejudges.

As I am writing this the NMPRAseason has just ended. Part of my jobis to tally the final 428 and 424 pointsprior to the Champ race so thewinners can be announced at thebanquet. Of course this is hard sincesome district VP’s don’t send in theirpoints until the middle of Oct., if at all(some of you guys have been verygood about getting me the points andI really appreciate it). I have pilots askme all the time where they stand, andwhile I could tell them, it really makesno sense to do so as the standings aregoing to change dramatically at fiscalyear end. I will accept points only untilthe 10th of Oct. Any submissions after

District Newsthat go into the circular file. It wouldalso be nice to know which class thepoints are being submitted for andwhich pilots are NMPRA members. Iguarantee you if I am Q500 VP nextyear things will be different. I envisionposting running points totals on theNMPRA web site much as we aredoing for the Western Pylon Series.We will have a standard format forpoints submittal.

As we move into the new fiscal year Ihope things will be on the upswing. Itlooks as if there is going to be aNational Race Series which willinclude all three classes not just Q40.I think this will be a good thing and willgo a long way towards improving boththe quality and quantity of racing.

I’ve heard quite a bit of grumblinglately about the cost and delivery ofsome of the composite Q500airframes. I think if you really lookthere are some very competitivecomposite planes readily available at amuch more attractive price. There isalso quite a bit of work being done onwood wing airframes. We have hadseveral very competitive wood wingQ500’s at our last few races. So if youdon’t have or don’t want to spend themoney for a composite Q500,consider one of the contemporarywood kits; you might be surprised athow competitive it is. Along thesesame lines there have been severalthreads on the pylon racing forums(NMPRA and others) detailing woodwing construction. There are guys outthere making very nice wood wings.

I was looking something up on theAMA web site the other day and cameacross a rule proposal to increase themin. weight of Q500 from 3.5 lb to 3.75lb. I don’t believe this change would begood for racing but that’s just myopinion. If you care about this one wayor the other, you should lobby thecontest board.
