Editorial

“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”

- Edward D Bono

The main objective of organising this National Level Student Research Conference “Higher Education : Student Perspectives” was to promote an interest in research among the student community and encourage the habit of creative thinking and incisive analysis. We decided to take this particular topic because we believe that students, the principal stakeholders in the higher education scenario, are rarely given the chance to express their own views and concerns.Any blueprint to mould and restructure our education system is necessarily incomplete without their views and insights.

The overwhelming response that we received from students across the country is a clear indication that it is imperatively necessary to fill this vacuum. The positive response and interest shown in this initiative by everyone – our Management, our faculty, students from colleges across the nation as well as by influential dignitaries like Sri Bharat Lal Meena, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Karnataka and Prof R.M. Vasagam, Chancellor, Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute, Chennai and Chancellor, Karpagam University, Coimbatore are clear indications that this conference has identified a major area of concern. This abstract booklet is an attempt to record and document the interesting perspectives on higher education presented by the participants.

On behalf of the college and of the Research committee, I would like to express my Gratitude to Dr Wooday P Krishna, Honorary General Secretary Seshadripuram Educational Trust, Sri M S Natraj, Chairman Governing Council, Dr M Prakash, Director of Studies, Seshadripuram Educational Trust, Dr Anuradha Roy, Principal Seshadripuram College and Prof Major K.Y Mohan Kumar, Vice Principal Seshadripuram College for encouraging and supporting our team in organising such an event.

I am thankful to my colleague and committee member Prof Raghavendra S who has worked equally with me and to Dr. Manjunath K for being with us in motivating and guiding the students.

The students were the supportive system for this endeavour and without their enthusiastic involvement, this conference would not have been possible. I am particularly indebted to student convenors Mohit K Rati and Pooja Bhimappa and other coordinators and volunteers whose efforts have resulted in organising this event in such a big way.

TOPIC: STATUS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN TAMIL NADU [Case study about attraction towards Agricultural studies, technology, opportunities

and threats in Agricultural studies]

AUTHOR: K. Arun KumarCOLLEGE: III B.Sc., (Ag.) Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture,

Sakthi Nagar, Erode-638 315.

Abstract

Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine are the three major fields which attracts the students of Tamil Nadu. Due to rapid increase in affiliated college and commercialization, the standard of education is gradually decreasing. Many students choose higher education on the basis of their economic condition but only few students study what they are passionate about. Awareness should be given to parents and students to show that there are many opportunities available for higher studies. Recently students of Tamil Nadu are showing interest towards agriculture courses. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University [TNAU] and its affiliated colleges provide agricultural courses for students. Unique technologies such as exam pad system and e-learning makes TNAU as a leading Agricultural university. TNAU Syllabus covers all subjects from Language, Plant Science, Animal Science, Economics, Engineering and Extension Education. So there are many opportunities for agricultural graduates. The fee structure is the only major threat faced by the students.

TOPIC: CHALLENGES OF GLOBALIZATION ON INDIAN HIGHER EDUCATION

AUTHOR: Ankush Shyam KumarCOLLEGE: DAVV, Indore, Madhya Pradesh

Abstract

No doubt, Higher Education has attained a key position in the knowledge society under globalised economy. However, the challenges faced are immense and far-reaching. Its impact on the clientele viz., Individuals, Institutions, Systems and Societies is not only not clear but also not comprehendible at this moment unless it is viewed in the context of various other factors that are simultaneously operating on the higher education system. Some agree that the rapid cross national flows of people, goods, capital and information may dissolve the nation State, push institutions (university is the one) into a common mould where as others disagree. It is assumed that globalization promises dramatic and rewarding change to the higher education systems, of societies, which are relatively stable in their political, social and institutional makeup, while for the others, it may threaten the very stability needed to build well performing higher education system. It is also true, that so far globalization has given the advanced economies a huge advantage as they had made enough preparation prior to its launching while others are caught in the trap without any preparation.

2 | National Level Student Research Conference

Keeping the above in view, present paper deliberates on the following: (i) The impact of Globalization on Indian Higher Education System in general and institutions in particular, and also when combined with WTO & GATS. (ii) The effect of the resultant outcome of the above on achieving the stated goals of higher education and the pronouncements made in the Constitution such as Access, Relevance, Quality and Equity etc. (iii) The Globalizations’ limited access and its commitment to different groups of people viz geographical, social, economic, political, lingual, age group and such other groups. (iv) The above three issues effect on the higher education policy, program, structure and function, structure function relations and the needed restructuring at the center, state and Institution levels. (v) Its influence on the stake holders decisions and actions and the resultant outcome and in turn its impact on the society at large (vi) All these in the present context of changed economic and other policies such as privatization, liberalization, Industrialization, Resource Crunch, invasion of new communication etc. and finally (vii) The impact of all these on nations’ development and identity and the individuals safety and security

Abstract

As technology has improved in various field we have still at the base foot corner, ‘paper and pen with a printed question paper one or more hall supervisors’ this makes our exam hall atmosphere, to make next step by introducing technology to get rid of pen and paper in exam hall and quit them. We should use tablets (small pc - digital exampad) instead of paper. The way of writing is same with own hand-writing but instead of writing in paper, we have write on screen of tablet with a specially made pen. Notebook and pen may have formed the tool kit of prior generations; today’s students come to class armed with smart phones, laptops and iPods. So students were updated but not the exam system. So in another aspect saving paper that ultimately saves our environment by paper conservation. So let’s making India digital starts from exam hall.

TOPIC: THE NON – CLASSICAL SONG (LIGHT SONG) : MUSICAL EDUCATION

AUTHOR: Mrs. K.P.U.N Preshani PereraCOLLEGE: University of Visual Arts, Colombo

Abstract

A song is born at the highest point of a rhythmical poetic expression. The poem therefore is the root or the birth place of any song. A selection of words can also be sung sans this foundation of poetry. It can be sung to tune; however a ‘song’ will not come to life herein. Words sung endorsing brands as Television or Radio advertisements using popular artists can be categorized under this limbo. But these pieces are not called songs as ‘song’ is not just singing.

A good song will have to have the foundation of a poetic expression. In the attempt of creating a song, the first step should be to pen the song in the form of a poem. Then musicality should be embedded to the poem to create a wholesome song.

TOPIC: HIGHER EDUCATION: TECHNOLOGY CHANGE AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

AUTHOR: Miss AditiSUB-AUTHOR: Mishra Research ScholarCOLLEGE: Ranidurgavati Vishwavidyalay, Jabalpur

AbstractThe landscape is changing. Higher education is being reshaped by globalization and the digital revolution. There are growing pressures related to declining sources of income and rising costs. There is heightened competition for share of the global student market. Institutions are seeing a lasting effect from the global financial crisis impacting both enrolment numbers and philanthropy, and students have increasing demands and expectations of their educational experience. Prospective students are becoming more consumer-orientated and making decisions about education accordingly. University rankings will increasingly have more influence on positioning institutions in the international market, and graduate career-readiness is a growing student concern. We have selected the most significant changes affecting international student recruitment and study abroad, international research collaborations and international expansion in the form of branch campuses. The role of governments in shaping campus international strategies and engagement overseas is also discussed Higher education institutions are large, complex, adaptive social systems like all other human organizations. Over the last decade, Higher Education around the world is facing a number of challenges and potential threats to effective learning and teaching support. In recent years considerable interest has focused on identifying those challenges, identifying opportunities and threats and proposing ways to address them. However, the relevant literature on higher education challenges is scattered over many textbooks, conferences and journals. This paper provides a comprehensive presentation of all those challenges found in the literature in a structured way. Also this study will identify how technology and data infrastructures could provide responses to address those challenges in a world where students are changing, their learning styles are changing, and the technologies to accommodate their needs are changing.

TOPIC: EDUCATION IS THE RIGHT KEY OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENTAUTHOR: Dr. (Mrs.) RatnaVermaSUB-AUTHOR: Asst. Professor Dept. of EconomicsCOLLEGE: Mata Gujri Women’s College, (Autonomous) Jabalpur, M.P, India

Abstract

The education is simple education is the most basic insurance against poverty. Education represents opportunity. At all ages, it empowers people with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to shape a better future.

HigHer education: Student PerSPectiveS | 5

In this paper highlighted the central role of education in achieving the goals and sustaining their gains. As the UN agency leading the Education for All movement, UNESCO is determined to make education count for everyone, everywhere. Development includes the fulfillment of each person’s material, spiritual and societal needs. It is defined as: “a process for enlarging people’s choices. These choices primarily reflect the desire to lead a long and healthy life; acquire basic knowledge; and have an access to resources essential for a decent standard of living.” Development empowers people and promotes important changes in their lives. However, development cannot take place by itself. It requires a educated, skilled and competent people. Seen from this angle, education becomes the most important factor for development as well as for empowering people. Education provides you with knowledge and information which in turn bring about desirable changes in the way you think, feel and act. Education also builds in you a strong sense of self-esteem, self-confidence. It contributes very effectively to the realisation of your potential. Therefore, education is considered as a social instrument for developing human resources and for human capital formation.

TOPIC: THE FUTURE OF FOREIGN HIGHER EDUCATION: HOW TECHNOLOGY WILL SHAPE LEARNING

AUTHOR: Manish Omprakash, 49\1 Abdalpura, RNT Road, Ujjain (M.P.)456010

Abstract

Technological innovation, long a hallmark of academic research, may now be changing the very way that universities teach and students learn. For academic institutions, charged with equipping graduates to compete in today’s knowledge economy, the possibilities are great. Distance education, sophisticated learning-management systems and the opportunity to collaborate with research partners from around the world are just some of the transformational benefits that universities are embracing.

But significant challenges also loom. For all of its benefits, technology remains a disruptive innovation—and an expensive one. Faculty members used to teaching in one way may be loath to invest the time to learn new methods, and may lack the budget for needed support. This paper examines the role of technology in shaping the future of higher education. The major findings are as follows:

Technology has had—and will continue to have—a significant impact on higher education.Nearlytwo-thirds (63%) of survey respondents from both the public and private sectors say that technological innovation will have a major influence on teaching methodologies over the next five years. In fact, technology will become a core differentiator in attracting students and corporate partners.

TOPIC: NEW DIRECTION IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAUTHOR: K.G. RakeshCOLLEGE: Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture, Erode(Tamil Nadu)

Abstract

Higher education makes a man more responsible, more knowledgeable, more focused, more enlightened, and after all, a better human being. Higher education mould individuals into better educated people, leading them to the path of success. College education must aim towards the overall development of individuals, infusing traits such as self-confidence, integrity and leadership qualities. A higher educated person is always rational in his decisions – overcomes stress or pressure of any kind easily and will be able to bring out his hidden potential. Professional courses mostly deals with the subject proper, but there should be separate courses for improving one’s soft skills also. A new direction in higher education, for example to make the students be effective in their communication skills, is a positive approach – it will help them to tackle situations strategically, increase their foresightedness and assertiveness, and make them successful citizens at the end. Moreover this gives them confidence which, in turn, helps them to inspire others, just like a snow ball effect. In order to provide this kind of effective higher education, the faculty should understand the concept first, they should undergo certain special training courses and other skill development classes for easy interaction – their role is to teach students how to imbibe the values of a responsible individual.

TOPIC: ONE INDIA, ONE EDUCATION SYSTEMAUTHOR: Suman. S Prasad CO-AUTHOR: Panindra M COLLEGE: SBMJC, KGF

Abstract

With 700 universities and more than 350000 affiliated colleges enrolling more than 20 million students in India, our education system is a large and complex system. More than 85% of the students are enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs with majority enrolling in three-year B. A, B.Com, or B.Sc., courses and one-sixth of all Indian students are enrolled in engineering/other professional degrees.

As there are more than 700 universities, each following different syllabus for different courses across, it makes difficult for students to follow. Also there will be lot of difference in the process of acquiring knowledge. If we compare in the state of Karnataka, what Bangalore University follows is different from Mysore University, the students perusing same courses are thought differently. Just in a single state there are so many difference in education, if we take India as a whole there is no uniform education for higher studies.

HigHer education: Student PerSPectiveS | 7

As uniformity in higher education is necessary, in this respect a case study is presented to know the need of one/single/uniform education system for higher education in India.

TOPIC: TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT TOWARDS EDUCATION AUTHOR: B.N. GiridharanCO-AUTHOR: K. Anuradha COLLEGE: SBMJC, K.G.F.

Abstract

Here we are to talk about technology and the role it plays in this century’s education. Technology is by far the most popular topic concerning this century’s Learning and Education; and many of the videos on youtube are about just that. Firstly, I would make this point very clear that technology is not the solution to better education. It is simply a tool to aid Education & Learning. With the help of technology students are learning very valuable research skills which they can transplant at high levels of education at universities and beyond. Technology can be used to enhance critical thinking & critical literacy skills. I think the most exciting aspect of technology in education is its use for designing creativity. We can create so many different types of contents written audio, video, they can create music, they can create magazines to present their ideas. So in other words technology can be present at every stage of education process from the introduction & the research to the project making to the presentation. Finally, it is important to consider that technology is not just about interactive whiteboards or Computer other examples included digital camera, digital microscope, printers as well as things like microphones & projectors as well. Its about finding ways to use technology meaningfully, so the investment is made by schools is a worthwhile one, and it makes education more relevant to life

TOPIC: IMPACT OF OPEN UNIVERSITIES WITH REFERENCE TO INDIAN SCENARIO

AUTHOR: Nitin R KashyapCO-AUTHOR: Kishore VCOLLEGE: Sri BhagawanMahveer Jain College, KGF.

Abstract

Open Universities are universities with an open door academic policy, i.e. no entry requirements (no regular attending of class). These universities help middle and lower class people to study and also to earn money by working. It is also very helpful to students who are pursuing their professional courses like CA, ICWA etc and business personals who are interested in further education. It is easily accessible, as it has regional offices in every district headquarters which makes it easy for the people to reach out and avail their

desired courses and also concentrate on their commitment peacefully. It also gives special exemptions on subjects for students who are pursuing professional courses, which in turn helps students to concentrate more on their goals and also finish their respective UG and PG courses by the time they achieve their goals. India has more youth in its population which is 2nd largest in the world and India is the home for one of the largest open university in the world. If used correctly by the youth of our country, Open Universities have a great potential to change our countries education system and its future.

TOPIC: TECHNOLOGY IN HIGHER EDUCATION AUTHOR: Steve ReinhardCO-AUTHOR: PrabhuCOLLEGE: SBMJC {K.G.F}

Abstract

The number one paradox in higher education is that technology is both transforming and disrupting universities around the world. Institutions that adapt to the technology and become content producers will survive and flourish. In the past few years there have been many changes in the education systems like smart classes and usage of projectors and explaining through lots of practical examples

• Flipped classes: Students studying (asynchronous) course materials on their own time usually by accessing content posted to a learning management system on the Internet. Physical class time is spent working on problems, team projects, discussion issues and similar activities.

• Blended classes: Blended classes are like flipped classes, but typically the time in a physical class meeting is reduced to compensate for the time students spend studying asynchronous materials.

• Online classes: eliminate physical class sessions. There are two types of online classes: those that have no synchronous interaction among faculty and students and those that use videoconferencing software to hold a real-time, synchronous class. Online programs with synchronous classes are the most expensive and labor-intensive to offer, but provide the best online experience.

Such invention in technology has been implemented and takes education to higher level. India is said to be the best country which offers best education in the world. What does it take for a university to develop the kind of materials described above? Obviously, it requires money, but more than money it needs a motivated and committed faculty. It is true that not all students are ready for technology in learning.

Technology is just a tool.in terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important

Technology is shaping the future education to another level. Most respondents believe that technology will become ever more interwoven into the fabric of academic life. No generation is more at ease with online, collaborative technologies than today’s young people are have moved to improvisation, Where a notebook and pen may have formed the tool kit of prior generations, today’s students come to class armed with smart phones, laptops and iPods.Improvements in technology appear to provide an unprecedented opportunity to improve learning and teaching within the higher education system. At present, however, opinions are divided over the efficacy of such an approach and the extent to which technology should be embraced in teaching. Over a period of two years, we have developed a new `blended’ module where all learning resources are provided online and formal teaching sessions are used to provide the directed learning needed by students. This article explores the effectiveness of using technology to direct learning and identifies generic problems. Using measures of student performance, we demonstrate that technology in higher education can significantly improve student learning when fully aligned to the teaching aims and fully embedded within a module. The ability of students to use technology to repeatedly return to resources was a clear benefit, allowing students to take responsibility for their own study at a pace appropriate for the learner.

Abstract

Much has been written over the past decade about the failure of the educational system, from pre-KG through post-secondary education. At the college and university level, current challenges include rapidly rising tuition costs and pressures for educational reform. Proponents for educational reform argue that students are disengaged from the learning process and that traditional lecture-based courses do not encourage student immersion, interaction, or critical thinking. They argue that teachers are equally disengaged from

the learning process, with insufficient value placed on teaching, pressures to assign overinflated grades, and incentives to teach content only, not critical thinking skills. College students themselves appear to support the push for educational reform. A recent McKinsey survey indicates that recent graduates feel unprepared for the “real world” and ill-equipped with the skills required to be competitive in today’s job market. Even supporters of today’s higher education system recognize the need to better engage both teachers and students in classroom learning. Numerous technologies are emerging that aim, in part, to address these challenges

Abstract

Education is the process of facilitating learning; or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Education can be enhanced by various means. Technology can be harnessed to achieve paramount education. means of education. When teacher-to-student along with technology form the utility, then it is called blended learning. Technology uses visuals and videos to teach students. When we have diagrams and videos, to present ideas in screen, then students can be taught with relative ease and with the consumption of less time. A picture can convey many ideas than a thousand words. The commision of online tests have reduced the usage and wastage of paper. So saving of paper shall be acknowledged economically, environmentally and socially for the society. Commision of online tests shall enable access of instant results. This will motivate the students to learn from their mistakes instantly. Some people may find it difficult and tiresome travelling a long distance to reach the center. By e-learning they can instead, view live online classes. Virtual Reality technology possesses an unprecedented potential in the field of education. With technology we are shifting education to a whole new level. Taking it to a whole new level is the need of the era. In an attempt to simplify education, we are clinging onto complex technology which is not ill but the natural necessity of the era. An effort is made to show how technology is currently being used, its scope in future and its necessity. An effort is made to foresee how technology can assist education.

Abstract

Technology has impacted almost every aspect of life today, and education is no exception. Or is it? In some ways, education seems much the same as it has been for many years. A 14th century illustration by LaurentiusVoltolina depicts a university lecture in medieval Italy. The scene is easily recognizable because of its parallels to the modern day. The teacher lectures from a podium at the front of the room while the students sit in rows and listen. Some of the students have books open in front of them and appear to be following along. A few look bored. Some are talking to their neighbours. One appears to be sleeping. Classrooms today do not look much different, though you might find modern students looking at their laptops, tablets, or smart phones instead of books (though probably open to Facebook). A cynic would say that technology has done nothing to change education. Technology is a powerful tool that can support and transform education in many ways, from making it easier for teachers to create instructional materials to enabling new ways for people to learn and work together. With the worldwide reach of the Internet and the ubiquity of smart devices that can connect to it, a new age of anytime anywhere education is dawning. It will be up to instructional designers and educational technologies to make the most of the opportunities provided by technology to change education so that effective and efficient education is available to everyone everywhere. projects Students now days are benefited from technology in more than one way. When they are assigned with projects, they can gather information within seconds through the internet, which saves their time and allow doing more creative thinking. Earlier students used to search various magazines, books, journals to collect information, which was very time consuming. Yes, technology changing the face of education When we are in school, we used to take the teacher’s notes. We had only two options, either we need to understand and learn or we need to memorize to get the marks. But now students have lot of opportunities in the internet to understand about the lesson. Nowadays students want to be unique, so they know about the topic very well and by having thirst for knowledge.

Today’s colleges and universities face numerous challenges, with rising tuition costs and pressures for educational reform. Numerous technologies are emerging that aim, in part, to address these challenges. Herein, we provide an overview of 10 technologies and approaches that have the potential to improve higher education and enhance student learning and achievement; these include, Computerized Grading, Electronic Textbooks, Simulation Technology, Gamification, Flipped Classrooms, Active Learning Classrooms, Massive Open Online Courses, Collaborative Distance Learning Environments, the Active Learning ForumTM platform, and Learning Management Systems. Education and technology have historically evolved together and will continue to do so. The technologies discussed herein have the potential to improve higher education; however, technology alone is insufficient to address the many challenges students and educators face today. New technology is but a part of the broader solution that should include new business models, reform of the tenure system, greater incentives for teaching, and a variety of other critical changes to the U.S. higher education system. In the age where the world at large is having technology at its fingertips, there is much to be desired in actually using it to enhance our lives. A typical point in reference is the education system in India. In our country a large number of kids still do not have access to quality education which will help change their lives and aid them to contribute to society and country by becoming constructive citizens of the country. Technology has brought quite a lot of changes in education sector in the last decade. Some of the major problems ailing our education system currently are lack of proper infrastructure, absence of suitable objective-based curriculum at various levels, inadequate number of trained teachers to impart quality education, commercialization in admission procedures due to prevalence of corrupt practices, politicizing education through quota system, bribery and corruption at all levels, improper utilization of tools and technology at primary, secondary and college education levels.

If India needs to become a superpower in the next two decades, it can only happen if the youngsters in the country have access to quality education at all levels and opportunities are given based on merit. It also involves finding solution to the above mentioned problems and fixing the same long term so it may make our country a prosperous, vibrant nation.

Intellectual education is based on mental activity that results in skills, abilities, aptitudes and capacities. And at its turn a personality differs from person having unique interests, skills and intellectual level. Its role is to develop intellectual capacities and abilities. Intellectual education starts with cognitive techniques: writing, reading, counting, and ability to complete knowledge with derivate information from known information. Objective of intellectual education is cognition, and then the main goal of intellectual education is to form independent personality with unique thinking which is very important in today’s world. The study abroad decision-making process is a complex interplay of many variables, including future job prospects, cost of education, scholarships, availability of quality local programs, social recognition and opportunities of immigration that differ based on student’s academic and financial ability. Indian students going abroad can be classified into two segments – one move for advancement and the other for immigration. The groups differ because of their motivation, targeted destination, and intended level of study. In the end it leads loss to our nation only as most of the students who shift abroad for the purpose of study settle their itself. Abstract

In this era when the world is at your fingertips, everything is spoken of on a global level. This level of competitiveness urges the global market to search for quality assurance.

The term higher education is trending in today’s world. According to Cambridge English dictionary the term higher education is defined as “education at universities or colleges where subjects are studied at an advanced level”. Due to global opportunities available, students are focusing more on practical and core knowledge rather than theoretical and shallow knowledge. The importance of higher education has increased in 21st century due to globalization. Companies acquire people who have higher cognitive skills, the motivation to challenge status quo, core competencies, skills in problem identification and solving, interpersonal competency etc. Higher education is one such forum through which an individual may develop, improve and showcase their worth.

Higher education moulds its curriculum to the needs of the labour market, helping students to step into the world of employment with much needed knowledge and skill to be one step ahead of their counter parts, hence creating a pathway for career enhancement.

According to the ALL INDIA SURVEY ON HIGHER EDUCATION (2012-13) the students enrolled in Under Graduate courses is 79.2% however, when it goes higher from Under Graduation to Post Graduation it decreases steeply to 11.44%. Students face a number of challenges when it comes to higher education, either economically due to the cost of higher education, social restrictions, non- availability of desired courses, less competent faculty and so on. Also, education system where importance is not given to overall development of students and instead focuses on syllabus and sticks to the book knowledge poses as a draw back as it does not pose much value in the real scenario.

Abstract

India’s higher education system is the third largest in the world, next to the United States and China. The main governing body at the tertiary level is the University Grants Commission, which enforces its standards, advises the government, and helps coordinate between the centre and the state. Higher education worldwide is in a period of transition, affected by globalization, the advent of mass access, changing relationships between the university and the state, and the new technologies, among others. Global Perspectives on Higher Education provides cogent analysis and comparative perspectives on these and other central issues affecting postsecondary education worldwide.

This paper presents an insight into views on the future of higher education in India and areas of potential collaboration. The Indian higher education system is facing an unprecedented transformation in the coming decade. This transformation is being driven by economic and demographic change: by 2020, India will be the world’s third largest economy, with a correspondingly rapid growth in the size of its middle classes. Currently, over 50% of India’s population is under 25 years old; by 2020 India will outpace China as the country with the largest tertiary-age population.

Despite significant progress over the last ten years, Indian higher education is faced with four broad challenges: The supply-demand gap, the low quality of teaching and learning Constraints on research capacity and innovation, uneven growth and access to opportunity. Institutions want internationalisation to move beyond sending Indian students to abroad there is strong demand for foreign students and faculty to come to India. Some would like to see the restrictions on foreign faculty being hired in India lifted. Raising the quality of teaching and learning emerged as the highest priority of most institutions.

Abstract

Higher Education is the pillar of success of any nation. So, it is necessary to know the specific challenges and opportunities in education system. HE system continues to muddle its way through its identity crisis. Confronted with world that is strikingly different, it was a decade ago, that India faces rapidly shifting economic, political and national security realities and challenges. To respond to these challenge, it is essential that our constitution of HE graduate globally competent students.

It was found that the student’s sign-up for higher studies with less interest or take it casually which results in, millions of graduates and professionals churned out every year, a large proportion are deemed unemployable. So, teaching students with monotonous ideas leads to inefficiency. Presently, university and employees discourse identify a need for the graduates to have intellectual and global “mind set” beyond disciplinary competencies and national boundaries. If such development take shape in its true sense in our country, students would be attracted to pursue HE which will in turn fulfil corporate expectations. To start with, by making education liberal, introducing new practices and applied research work; updating course curriculum frequently, implementing vocational skill, employability enhancement and soft skills development programme, entrepreneurship development programme, employability enhancement, specialisation wise clubs and committee of students, practical assignments related to their field, management quiz etc. to ensure improvement in multi-learning technique.

Currently, Education acts as a weapon to fight against challenges. So, advanced education is necessary to uplift students in the global world. By introducing multi-learning technique in field of education the student gets empowered, potentiality to face challenges which paves the way for accelerating global competence.

Abstract

Higher education, as we all know, comes after completion of a school providing secondary education, tertiary education, as well as vocational education. Higher education includes teaching, research, exacting applied and social services activities of universities. Some new innovations in higher education can take the level of learning at a new point. As illustrated in this paper, titled “Undergraduate Education: Let go and let grow”, let the degree colleges focus on providing skill-oriented education in a variety of fields where there is a perceived demand for employment. In fact, a long-standing proposition of de-linking employment with degrees can be taken one step further by delinking education with certification and degrees. “Post-graduate Education: Inside-out and Bottom-up instead of Outside-in and Top-down” -- For management of post-graduate education, fortunately we have powerful indigenous models institutions which are acclaimed globally for their academic excellence. Their domains of knowledge are varied, ranging from science, technology, medicine to law and statistics. Even using of different online projects, blogs and web quests can be included. These web-based communication tools allow teachers and students to increase student engagement by enhancing experiential type of learning. The paper explores the innovative use of such tools (techniques) to engage students with education more effectively, which thus enhances the learning process.

Abstract

Higher education institutions constitute the assembly lines for generation of human capital and nurseries to nurture the researchers. Thus, these institutions are intimately linked to the scale and scope of economic activity and development in a country. No country can afford to prosper in the long run if it neglects the development of facilities for higher education, which is characterised by significant positive externalities. For example, 10 researchers working in isolation will never be able to generate the same level or quality of research as they will do while working in a team.

The State of Higher Education in India Positive Trends: There is no doubt that considerable progress has been made in the provision of higher education in India since 1950-51, a time when it had only 27 universities or deemed universities. As things stand today this number has risen to 400; and there have been vast improvements in generating gender equality, and securing the rights of every capable human being to access higher education. At the time of independence hardly 10 percent of the students enrolled in higher educational institutions were women. By the turn of the century, this figure had risen to 40 percent.

India possesses a highly developed higher education system which offers facility of education and training in almost all aspects of creative and intellectual endeavours: arts and humanities; natural, mathematical and social sciences, engineering; medicine; dentistry; agriculture; commerce and management; music and performing arts; national and foreign languages; culture; communications etc. It has been observed that policy framework is carefully planned at the level of the Planning Commission, Ministry of Human Resource Development and University Grants Commission. The Higher Education sector ensures quality educational process, with the help of special accreditation agencies established for the purpose

Abstract

This paper focuses on reforms needed for higher education system in India. The theme that is being proposed in this paper uses “the concept of excellence as micro” and “the practical education as macro”.

To start with, the schools must identify the creativity and skills among the students and help them in developing their talents. Second, a compulsory subject of current affairs should be included in the academic year for the higher primary level. The secondary level and pre-university education must be designed in such a way that it actually provides space for the students to prepare for competitive exams such as I.A.S and I.P.S.

Next, educational institutions must bring up a rule that every student should do live projects and internship to develop their practical knowledge.

Government should support the educational institutions by providing necessary facilities, skilled faculties and approve it. The institutions must provide the students with new software and skilled lecturers. They should evolve themselves along with the latest programmes which creates new path for higher education.

This paper also concentrates on issues like problem faced by the students as well as the lecturers, reports of public reaction, lack of awareness and privatization.

Abstract

Many higher education systems all over the world are currently in flux and operate in stormy waters. Universities are expected today to be more accountable and transparent to the government and surrounding society, to become entrepreneurs in their search for diverse budgeting sources, to teach many more students from heterogeneous backgrounds and abilities, to incorporate the new information and communication technologies at various levels of the university operation, and to be attentive and adaptive to emerging political and social changes.

The extent of diversity and homogeneity of higher education systems depends on various variables. Each national higher education system has external and internal boundaries that portray its horizontal and vertical structure at various levels. The external boundaries define basically which kind of institutions are included in or excluded from the higher

education system. By depicting the external boundaries of various national higher education systems, it is possible to understand the size and basic structure of each system, as well as the vertical and horizontal structure of its institutions.

The internal boundaries reflect the horizontal and vertical structures of any given higher education system in relation to a variety of variables. Some of the changes that took place in the last decades are at the international level, some are at the national level, and others are at the institutional level. It focuses on the trends of: widening access to higher education, changing modes of research, diversifying funding sources, the impact of the information and communication technologies, and the influence of globalization, accreditation and transnational policies on the structure and roles of higher education systems.

TOPIC: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & ITS ROLE IN EDUCATION AUTHOR: Jitu TiwaryCOLLEGE: DBIBMS, Kumbalagodu, Bengaluru

Abstract

It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. AI means Artificial Intelligence. Intelligence however cannot be defined but AI can be described as branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of machine exhibiting intelligent behavior. Artificial intelligence involves two basic ideas. First, it involves studying the thought processes of human beings. Second, it deals with representing those processes via machines (like computers, robots, etc.) AI is behaviour of a machine, which, if performed by a human being, would be called intelligent. It makes machines smarter and more useful, and is less expensive than natural intelligence. Natural language processing (NLP) refers to artificial intelligence methods of communicating with a computer in a natural language like English. The main objective of a NLP program is to understand input and initiate action.

Higher education institutions are large, complex, adaptive social systems like all other human organizations. Over the last decade, Higher Education around the world is facing a number of challenges and potential threats to effective learning and teaching support. Though the data shows a massive growth in the number of students’ enrollment in colleges/universities, holistic view reveals that still only a meager percentage of the total population has access to higher education. Globalization and privatization are imposing new challenges but the nations are still entangled in solving the basic problems of accessibility to higher education for all. In the wake of the transition from elitist to mass education, universities worldwide are under pressure to enhance access and equity on the one hand; and to maintain high standards of quality and excellence on the other. However, the relevant literature on higher education challenges is scattered over many textbooks, conferences and journals. This paper provides a comprehensive presentation of all those challenges found in the literature in a structured way. Also this study will identify how technology and data infrastructures could provide responses to address those challenges in a world where students are changing, their learning styles are changing, and the technologies to accommodate their needs are changing.

tremendous scope for more people in the country to be a part of the education system. India’s higher education system is the largest in the world enrolling over 70 million students in less than two decades. (Inidia Brand Equity Foundation., 2016)

There are a number of institutes that offer higher education to students and these universities can be categorized as government, deemed, private, autonomous etc. To co-ordinate and to maintain the standards the government has set up a statutory body, The University Grants Commission which is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education. It provides recognition and distributes funds to recognized institutions. (Ministry of human resource development, 2002)There are also different educational bodies with similar functions like the UGC which work with or independently with the UGC such as AICTE, BCI etc. There might be community colleges, NGO based systems, private educational players that offer higher education.

The Indian Education system is often termed as obsolete and old. (nujs)We want to find out about the awareness and perspective of students in the education system they are a part of. In our research we pose a question of importance to try and analyse and to quantify the understanding of students about the Indian education system(s). Our sample size includes students who are a part of colleges/universities that are under the UGC system and fall under the higher education system.

The reason for choosing UGC students is due to highest prevalence of the system amongst all education systems in India. Our sample size would be a minimum of 150 and through our research we would like to uncover the awareness and level of understanding of students about the education system. For collection of data we will use a structured questionnaire prepared for this purpose, and also non-directive interview to find the level of understanding. To analyse the data we will use Data analytic tools present in MS-Excel. The data will be presented in Charts and graphs.

Abstract

India’s GER is lingering around 19 percent at the moment, 6 % below the world average and at least 50 % lesser than countries such as Australia and the United States of America. GER stands for gross enrollment rate, or the percentage of students enrolling into higher education institutes each year post high school. The government apparently has a vision to increase this to 30 percent by the year 2020.

To give that information some context, India has the largest population of teens with close to 100 million in number between 17 to 19. But each year only 19 % students enroll into higher education institutes which translates to 20 million according to a joint survey by aspiring minds and Nasscom in 2013.

That leaves a whopping 81 % or 80 million in number who do not have the opportunity to study even if they wanted to. And to think only 3.5 million graduates join the workforce each year among the 20 million, I wonder how many people drop out eventually.

TOPIC: CHALLENGES OF GLOBALIZATION ON INDIAN HIGHER EDUCATION

AUTHOR: Ankush Shyamkumar

(iii) The

Globalizations’ limited access and its commitment to different groups of people viz geographical, social, economic, political, lingual, age group and such other groups.

Education in general sense can be summed up at a basic level as referring to an experience or act that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. Education acts as backbone for the economy.

“The real India live in villages”, this saying is true today as it was when the country got independence 64 years back. As more than half of the population of the country lives in villages, rural development is an eminent factor for the development of our economy. The crucial motivating factor for the development of the economy in today’s time is education.

Now going on to the present situation of the rural areas in India and what are the developmental programs that could be taken up by the Government. Firstly the Government has to concentrate on the poverty level of rural areas. Poverty in India is widespread and a variety of methods have been proposed to measure it. Due to poverty the purchasing power has been decreased. The main cause of difference between urban and rural is poverty. Coming to the health conditions of the people in rural areas due to lack of adequate sanitation and safe water has significant negative health impacts including diarrhea, chronic diseases, repiratory problems etc. Coming to the education part children in rural areas don’t get proper education compared to urban education. Eventhough children have good amount of skills and interest to study they don’t get proper facilities to prove themselves.

Hence, these are the reasons which made us to take up this topic for research and we want to find out what are the developments which may be done to rural development by people and Government.

TOPIC: A STUDY ON HIGHER EDUCATION IN INDIAN MARKETAUTHOR: Monisha Co-AUTHOR: VidyaCOLLEGE: Seshadripuram College, Bengaluru

AbstractAlthough there have been challenges to higher education in the past, these most recent calls for reform may provoke a fundamental change in higher education. This change may not occur as a direct response to calls for greater transparency and accountability, but rather because of the opportunity to reflect on the purpose of higher education, the role of colleges and universities in the new millennium, and emerging scientific research on how people learn. These disparate literatures have not been tied together in a way that would examine the impact of fundamental change from the policy level to the institutional level and to the everyday lives of college and university administrators, faculty and students. Now the time has come to create a second wave of institution building and of excellence in the fields of education, research and capability building. We need higher educated people who are skilled and who can drive our economy forward. When India can provide skilled people to the outside world then we can transfer our country from a developing nation to a developed nation very easily and quickly. This study is an attempt to understand the role of higher education in national development and assess the challenges in higher education and also provide suggestive measures to overcome challenges in higher education.

Since higher education is pivotal for the development of society and it leads to progression of a nation my topic of research has been formulated as “A study on higher education in Indian Market”.

TOPIC: LEARNING ANALYTICS – A COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE TOOLAUTHOR: VinuthaCOLLEGE: Seshadripuram College, Bengaluru

Abstract

As people and devices are increasingly connected online, society is generating digital data traces at an extraordinary rate, unprecedented in human history. The growth of data surpasses the ability of institutions or individuals to make sense of it. This concern is predominantly pronounced in relation to knowledge, collaboration within an institution, teaching, and learning. Learning institutions and corporations make little use of the data learners “throw off” in the process of accessing learning materials, interacting with educators and peers, and creating new content. In an age where educational institutions are under growing pressure to reduce costs and increase efficiency, analytics promises to be an important lens through which to view and plan for change at course and institutions levels. Corporations likewise face pressure for increased competitiveness and productivity, a challenge that requires important contributions in organizational capacity building from work place and informal learning. With the advent of computers, the internet, and what

researchers call “technology-enhanced learning”, many educators have wondered just how effective the new virtual classrooms are. Some research has attempted to answer this question using learning analytics methodologies.

TOPIC: AFFECTIVE COMPUTING IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAUTHOR: Shwetha J.K.COLLEGE: Seshadripuram College, Bengaluru

Abstract

In the past decade e-learning system is in a dramatic growth stage. Challenge is that current e-learning systems cannot instruct students effectively since they do not consider the emotional state in the context of instruction. The emergence of the theory about “Affective computing” can solve this question. Affective computing can significantly enhance education/learning. Thus, understanding a learner’s affect throughout the learning process is crucial for understanding motivation. This paper helps us to understand the concept of Affective Computing the affective e-learning process and also its significance in higher education.
