2014 National Junior Angus Show — Media Kit

The Angus breed first came to America when George Grant transported four Angus bulls from Scotland to the Kansas prairie in 1873.The breed has reshaped rural America like no other, and Angus cattle can be found in every region of the country.

What is the American Angus Association?Formed in 1883, the American Angus Association® is the largest breed registry in the nation. The Angus breed accounts for more than 50% of all purebred registrations in the United States seedstock business. The Association also provides programs and services to farmers and ranchers to keep the quality of Angus beef consistent and above industry standards.

How is Certified Angus Beef® involved?Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) is the most visable Angus market in the consumer area. In grocery stores and restaurants across the globe, people are enjoying high-quality CAB products from the world’s largest branded beef program. In the fiscal year 2013, CAB® witnessed record sales of 865 million pounds of beef and research reveals 92% recognition of the three-word-phrase “Certified Angus Beef.”

Why is there a National Junior Angus Show?In 1956, the Junior Activities Department was formed to encourage young people to become involved with the Angus and beef industry. Each year, more juniors join and participate in the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) than any other youth cattle organization. The National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) is a time to showcase and support young juniors in their efforts to make an impact and become the future leaders of the Angus industry.

Contestants put on their aprons and fire up the grill to compete in the The All American Cook-Off Contest. Contestants cook steaks, roasts, fresh ground beef, smoked slice brisket, and shredded beef all using Certified Angus Beef®. There will be divisions for junior teams, which include two to six members of a state junior associations. Adults and juniors may compete together in the Chef’s Challenge, a team event that requires creativity to make a meal with a secret ingredient announced the day before. The event is educational, competitive, and fun. The cook-off is also an excellent way to educate and entertain non-participants, while promoting our chief end product — Certified Angus Beef®.

Teams of four junior members compete in a written exam and verbal quiz bowl as part of this competition. Junior members answer questions like, what is a heifer calf that is born twin to a bull called? And how many ribs does a cow have? (Answers are free martin and 26). This tests the knowledge of the contestants and encourages young members to continue learning about Angus cattle.

In 1988, the not-for-profit Angus Foundation awarded its first scholarship to Angus youth. This year at the NJAS, the Angus Foundation will give more than $200,000 in educational scholarships. At the heart of these awards is the strong belief that young people, whether they pursue a degree in agriculture or not, are the future of the Angus breed.

Photos for stories and releases will be available following the show.

News Release

Charles W. and Judy Herbster of Herbster Angus Farms, Falls City, Neb., have generously supported Angus youth by purchasing the Angus Foundation Heifer Package in Denver, Colo., for two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014. Thanks to their investment in the future, the Angus Foundation has been better equipped to fund scholarships and other leadership programs for Angus youth. In recognition of their positive example, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) chose to induct Charles W. and Judy Herbster into the Honorary Angus Foundation during the 2014 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Indianapolis, Ind. “The Herbsters’ enthusiasm has helped pave the way into the future for the next generation,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “This is what makes them worthy inductees for this year’s Honorary Angus Foundation.” The Herbster Family has been in agriculture for over 160 years. When Charles was 11 years old, his grandmother bought him 65 Angus cows, which began what is known today as Herbster Angus Farms. Besides the cattle, Charles W. and Judy own the Conklin Company, a national manufacturer and distributor of animal and agricultural products. In 2013, the Herbsters were recognized as Lifetime Angus Builder at the Angus Foundation Supporter Recognition Event in Louisville, Ky. “It is an honor to be an example for the Angus youth,” said Herbster, after purchasing the 2014 Angus Foundation Heifer Package. “It is a privilege for us to pass this on to the next generation.”

Murl and Lucian Richardson of Richardson McClung Ranch, Fort Worth, Texas, have been supporters of Angus youth for many years through the Angus Foundation and their home state of Texas. Through their generous contributions to the Texas Challenge and major gifts each year, the Richardsons have been role models for other Angus breeders in Texas and across the nation with their charitable giving. To honor the Richardsons, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) chose to induct them into the Honorary Angus Foundation during the 2014 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Indianapolis, Ind. “Recognized this past November for achieving the Lifetime Angus Patron giving level, Murl and Lucian’s unrestricted giving to the Angus Foundation has played a crucial role in our ability to award general undergraduate and graduate scholarships each year,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. Murl became involved in the Angus breed when he and Lucian started dating more than 60 years ago. He learned the business through Lucian’s father at the McClung Ranch, which operated at the time in southern Oklahoma and central Texas. The ranch, just west of Fort Worth in Rising Star, Texas, is currently home to 400 Angus cows. “Murl and Lucian are, without a doubt, two of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve had the privilege of getting to know,” says Radale Tiner, American Angus Association® regional manager for Texas and New Mexico. “Since becoming the regional manager, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know them better. After meeting them, you soon realize they are passionate about family, friends and Angus cattle.”

Bill and Betty Werner of Werner Angus, Cordova, Ill., are known for a positive legacy of gift giving to Angus youth. Most recently, the couple donated $50,000 to the Angus Foundation to establish a permanent endowment fund that will provide a $2,500 scholarship to the recipient of the NJAA Outstanding Leadership Award, in memory of Jim Baldridge. To recognize their loyalty and commitment, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) chose to induct the Werners into the Honorary Angus Foundation during the 2014 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Indianapolis, Ind. The Werners dedication to Angus youth and the Angus Foundation is displayed year after year through multiple contributions, including general donations, golf tournament sponsorships and silent auction contributions. Their support of the NJAA Outstanding Leadership Award will impact Angus youth for generations to come, as the award is given to a deserving NJAA member each year at the NJAS.The recognition will now be known as the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award. Becky Tiedemann, Baldridge’s daughter, says the family is proud, pleased and humbled by the Werners’ donation. “Bill and Betty’s passion for helping Angus youth is unparalleled,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Through their encouraging words and financial support, the Werners are deserving of this recognition for all they have done for the Angus breed and youth over the years.” Bill was raised in northeast Iowa where he started showing cattle and hogs at the age of 10. When looking to expand his herd, Werner looked for cattle with the traits he wanted and Angus were the answer. He became a lifetime member of the American Angus Association® in 1975 and has raised Angus cattle ever since.

NJAA Recognizes 2014 Advisors of the YearWisconsin Junior Angus Association honors their own as 2014 Advisors of the Year

Wisconsin Junior Angus Association (WJAA) advisors since 1997, Kevin and Keri Retallick are defined by fellow Angus breeders as committed, supportive and enthusiastic. Over the years, they have taken a small state membership and transformed it into a strong, involved and active group on all levels of competition. To honor their dedication to youth, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) recognized the Retallicks as Advisors of the Year at the 2014 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Indianapolis, Ind. “They both take the time to really get involved with the younger members by encouraging them to participate in all aspects of the association,” wrote Scott and Mia Bayer, fellow WJAA advisors. “Their knowledge of the Angus industry and willingness to share this knowledge with others, especially with young members, make them outstanding advisors.” The couple has been known to lend a helping hand, even when their own three daughters were preparing for show or competition. Their encouragement and guidance starts by asking a young member how their heifer is doing, then congratulating youth as they leave the show ring and even helping with scholarship applications. The Retallicks are positive examples to the youth who set high standards of excellence for the WJAA members. They have been named WJAA advisors of the year five times, and in 2002 they were co-chairs of the NJAS held in Milwaukee, Wis. The NJAA Advisor of the Year Award was introduced in 1980 to recognize the tremendous contributions of junior Angus association advisors. Any junior Angus association advisors are eligible for the award by sending in a letter of nomination.
