Introduction to NIDDCP • Iodine is essential micronutrient.

Required for

-optimal mental & physical development

-regulation of body metabolism .

• The disorders caused due to deficiency of nutritional iodine in the food/diet are called Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs).

• IDD may lead to

-abortions & stillbirths,

-goiter,

-cretinism & dwarfism,

-retarded mental & physical development

-deaf mutism, squint etc.

Establishment of State IDD Cell & State IDD Lab,

For effective implementation of NIDDCP Program in state, State

IDD Cell has been established at Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Room No.223 and State IDD Lab has been established in State Food Lab, Kharar and is now fully functional

Salt & Urine Sample Collection Testing

• As per SoPs developed under NIDDCP Program,

– In a District every month, 10 salt samples per Block are to be collected by MPHW (M & F).

– As per GoI guidelines, Out of the total salt samples collected, (90%) of the salt samples are to be tested in District level Labs identified for iodine estimations (District Malaria Labs) and (10%) of the salt samples are to be tested in State IDD Lab, Punjab.

—Urine and Salt samples tested at State IDD Lab, Punjab

• 20183 urine samples & 40031 salt samples tested by State IDD lab, Punjab

• Results shared with districts.

• Total 221 urine samples & 1082 salt samples contained Iodine content less than adequate levels.

On Spot Salt Testing (Qualitative Testing)

• During year 2015-16,

– As per compiled report of IDD Survey submitted to GoI by State, GoI declared

8 districts endemic namely Jalandhar, Patiala, SAS Nagar, Gurdaspur, Tarn-Taran, Amritsar, Kapurthala and Roop Nagar.

– On spot Salt testing Kits were provided to eight Endemic districts Jalandhar,

Patiala, SAS Nagar, Gurdaspur, Tarn-Taran, Amritsar, Kapurthala and Roop Nagar.

– As per GoI guidelines under NIDDCP Punjab • ASHA workers to test 50 household samples per month using On Spot Salt

Testing Kit. • Payment of Incentive of Rs 25/- to each ASHA for testing of 50 household

Salt samples .

• During year 2016-17, – On spot Salt testing Kits have been provided to Pathankot, Gurdaspur,

Hoshiarpur, Roop Nagar, SAS nagar and Patiala.

IDD Survey, Punjab

– According to GoI guidelines, on the basis of PPS Sampling IDD Survey has been completed in the State of Punjab with the assistance of PGIMER Chandigarh. 540 Salt Samples and 270 Urine Samples were collected from each district during IDD Survey and have been tested by State IDD Lab, Punjab.

IDD Re- Survey in Punjab

• During year 2016-17,

• IDD Re-Survey done in district Amritsar, Tarn-Taran, Gurdaspur & Jalandhar .

• Samples are being tested at State IDD Lab, Punjab.

• District Level training to the field staff was given by State IDD Cell team with assistance of School of Public Health, PGI Chandigarh.

Celebration of 21st October as “Global IDD Prevention Day”

• Every year 21st October is celebrated as “Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day”. – During year 2016 “Global Iodine

Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day“ was celebrated on 21st October 2016.

– IEC material printed and distributed to all districts.

– All districts organized Loud speaker campaign regarding importance of iodized salt.

Notification regarding Ban on Uniodized Salt

Commissioner Food & Drug Administration, Punjab has issued notification regarding ban on sale of uniodized salt as per section 2.3.12 of FSSAI Act.

• Commissioner Food & Drug Administration, Punjab has issued circular dated 22-06-2016 to all FSOs for taking two salt samples every month under FSSAI Act as per GoI guidelines
