The Master of Science in Clinical Medicine-Family Medicine is a track program of the College of Medicine-Philippine General Hospital, University of the Philippines Manila. This is in response to the increasing demands of Family Medicine practitioners for further academic and research improvement in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific Region. This program track will enhance the competency of the family physicians in research, clinical work and Family Medicine education. It will shall provide family physicians additional expertise in their special areas of interest in Family Medicine. The program shall strengthen the integration of biopsychosocialclinical aspects of education and practice. The degree will likewise enable the Family Medicine practitioners to formulate and implement Quality Assurance Programs and integrate counseling and hospice care into their clinical practice.

At the end of the program, the graduate is expected to: * Apply Family Medicine in teaching, training, and

administration * Conduct and apply research output to medical science

geared towards their areas of interest * Formulate educational program in the special areas such

as: Counseling, Hospice and Palliative Care, Quality Assurance, Family Wellness and Evidence-Based Family Practice

* Integrate biopsychosocial clinical aspects of education and practice as a teacher, researcher, specialist or as an administrator or a manager; and

* Carry out responsibilities in organizing Family Medicine program, research and service.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

THE DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY AND COMMUNITY MEDICINE

The Department of Family and Community Medicine of the College of Medicine, UP Manila is the pioneer department in Family Medicine Residency program in the Philippines. It was introduced in the country in 1974. It has graduated 190 family physicians, 15 of whom have become chairs of the department and 5 presidents of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians. The department has led in various concepts in Family Medicine-Family System, Counseling, Hospice/Palliative Care, Research and Quality Assurance in Primary Care and Evidence-Based Family Practice. The department has also introduced this graduate program track which has attracted both local and foreign physicians.

The academic year is divided into 2 semesters of 16 weeks each, excluding registration and final examination periods. The 1st semester starts in August and ends in December, while the 2nd semester covers the period from January to May, with a two-week Christmas vacation in December. The short term session of 6 weeks following the 2nd semester is usually in June and July.

English is generally used as the medium of instruction. A full time student's normal load is 12-15 units per semester and 6 units during summer; a part-time student enrolls in half of these.

The tuition fee is P990.00 per unit, the library fee is P1,050 and other fees is P350.00 per semester. A student with a load of 15 units in a semester matriculates P16,250.00 on the average while a foreign student pays an additional Educational Development Fund of US $ 500.00 (US $100.00 for residency only) for every semester.

There is a processing fee of P300.00 for Filipino applicants while interested foreigners are charged US$ 30.00. Application materials can be submitted not later than the second Friday of April of each year.

The following are the grade requirements for each student to be of good standing in the program: 1) general weighted average of 2.00 or better, 2) weighted average of 2.00 or better for the major/required courses, and 3) no grade of 5.00 in any academic course. A maximum of 5 years is given to a student to finish the program.

The program requires the candidate to complete and pass 30 units of formal courses, 6 units of research and a comprehensive examination.

Living accommodations for students may be provided in privately-owned housing units/dorms/apartment hotels. Dorms offer lodging and/or board. There are privately-owned eateries around the school.

The following are the minimum NGOHS requirements: 1. Must have an MD degree 2. Good scholastic record from any recognized institution of higher

learning. 3. Graduated of an accredited Family Medicine Residency Program 4. Fellow/Diplomate in Family Medicine 5. Currently involved in Family Medicine training programs or has interest

in training/teaching 6. Duly accomplished Application Form (available at the Graduate Office or

through ngohs.upm.edu.ph) together with the following documents: * original copy of the official Transcript of Records (without remarks)* 2 letters of reference from former professors, supervisors or

employers (included in the application form) * résumé or curriculum vitaé * receipt of processing fee paid at the UPM Cashier's Office * certified true copy of college diploma with the seal of the university

and the signature of the registrar in ink * 4 passport-size photos * essay on an 8-1/2” x 11” sheet of paper describing your motivation

for pursuing graduate study and your view of self-directed learning as a method of instruction, and a description of your research interest

7. For foreign applicants, additional requirements include: * involvement in teaching Family and Community Medicine or a

graduate of a residency program * a written endorsement of Department of Family Medicine Chair

and/or President of National Family Medicine Organization * original Transcript of Records duly authenticated by consulate/embassy * certified true copy of the English translation of the diploma with the

seal of the university and the signature of the registrar in ink, duly authenticated by the consulate/embassy

* Official TOEFL score of at least 550 (written test) or 173 (computerized test); 61 (internet based) or other Certification of English proficiency equivalent to TOEFL (e.g. IELTS (band 6); a certificate that English is the medium of instruction in the university where the student has graduated from is sufficient to waive this requirement

* affidavit of support or certification of financial capability * photocopy of passport (present original for verification)

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTSA candidate for the degree of Master of Science in Clinical Medicine (Family Medicine) must comply with the rules on graduation of the University and/or the Master of Science in Clinical Medicine program. 1. A general weighted average not lower than 2.00 in major courses and in all

courses taken provided there is no grade of 5.00 in any of these courses 2. Passing a comprehensive examination 3. Satisfactory completion and submission of 6 bound copies of the master's

thesis

DIPLOMA IN CLINICAL MEDICINE (Family Medicine)A Diploma in Family Medicine shall be awarded to candidates who have satisfactorily completed the 28-unit classroom work and passing the comprehensive examination.
