Dr. Tinnin appears as soloist with Dr. Pepping on three concerti for two trumpets.Dr. Randy Tinnin: “One in Love and Peace,” released in 2012 by GIA publications to accompany printed music by the same title.

Reviewed Recordings

Professor Lynn Arriale was interviewed and/or had her recordings reviewed in top jazz publications, BBC and the London Times over 35 times. Submitting one’s CD for review, is essentially a competition with other jazz artists internationally. Jazz journalists receive countless CDs to review, but relatively few are reviewed. An artist will not receive a review simply because they have recorded a CD. Their work is judged against countless artists worldwide and it is considered an honor to be reviewed in any jazz publication.

Professor Barry Greene: Cited in Downbeat magazine, the premier jazz journal of the world, in regards to his recent performance on the Motema record label release of “Pepper Adams, Joy Road.”

Other Noteworthy Recognition

Barry Albright and a member of the paleontology field crew that he worked with in southern Utah in February, 2012, discovered the remains of a rare form marine reptile in the 93 million-year-old Tropic Shale Formation. This specimen, an early, primitive mosasaur, represents the oldest of its kind in the United States and possibly in all of North America. The early phase of research on this important specimen has begun, which will include collaboration with scientists from the Institute for the Study of Earth and Man at Southern Methodist University, Dallas , TX, and from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument , Kanab, Utah.

Tom Pekarek continues as a Terry Presidential Professor.

Tom Pekarek submitted “RUI: Exploration of Doped III-VI THz Systems in the New Class of Layered III-VI Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors”, National Science Foundation (NSF) (Submitted Fall 2012; Rejected Spring 2013; Will resubmit Fall 2013). [$179,694.]

Given the large increase in the cost of liquid Helium and the need for liquid helium to continue physics research at UNF to obtain new data, Tom Pekarek has led the department effort to obtain a helium liquefier. The liquefier is scheduled for installation during summer and fall 2013. Tom Pekarek has been designated the Director of the

Page 54: National Exhibitions - University of North Web viewCollege of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Report 2012-13. ... “Unfolding Diffusion-Based Ag Nanoparticle Growth in SiO 2 ... “The

UNF Physics Department Helium Liquefier Facility. UNF joins UF, FSU and UCF as the only SUS schools with a helium liquefier facility and UNF will be one of a very few undergraduate universities in the US having such a facility.

Nirmal Patel served as a reviewer of research projects for a UK-India program and he reviewed Ph D theses for students attending Indian universities.

Nirmal Patel served as a referee for five journals and refereed a total of seven research papers.

Nirmal Patel’s ozone gas sensors payload was again approved by NASA in 2012. The sensors payload successfully cleared all required tests by NASA and was certified for launch by NASA in the first week of August 2012. The HASP 2012 balloon flight was launched successfully by NASA-CSBF on September 1, 2012 from Fort Sumner, New Mexico. This was his fifth successful balloon flight launch since 2008.

Nirmal Patel’s work on the UNF-UND joint project on the HASP2013 balloon payload for “Development of free flying payload to measure ozone profile in the stratosphere using improved nanocrystalline sensor arrays and radio payload on a high altitude balloon platform” was approved by NASA for the HASP 2013 balloon flight. The fabrication of the sensor array payload is on-going.

Nirmal Patel is working with Dr. Gerald Merckel, past Associate Dean of UNF’s CCEC, on trying to establish an international collaboration with Poland on based on his sensors technologies.

Nirmal Patel participated on the board of the Florida Space Grants Consortium meeting held at the Hilton, University of Florida, Gainesville on November 8, 2012.

Nirmal Patel continues to work with Dr. Ron Fevig, University of North Dakota, Grand Folks, ND on the joint development, fabrication and testing of sensors payloads for balloon and rocket flights.

Nirmal Patel continues to work with Dr. Ron Fevig, University of North Dakota, Grand Folks, ND; Dr. Matthew Nelson, Aerospace Engineering, Iowa State University, Ames, IA and Dr. Don Takehara, Director, Center for Research and Innovation of Taylor University, Upland, IN for developing “High-Precision Sensor Payload” for balloon flights funded by the NSF. He has fabricated a nanocrystalline sensor array system and recently supplied them for integrating with their payload.

Nirmal Patel supplied ozone gas sensors to Louisiana State University, Dr. Greg Guzik and Mr. Zachary Baum, Graduate students team leader for the student’s balloon flight.

Daniel Santavicca in May submitted a proposal to the Florida Space Research Program entitled, "Multiplexed Readout of Superconducting Transition Edge Sensor with Compact Superconducting Resonators."
