Initiating a national conversation on Post Traumatic Stress DisorderThe FearLess PTSD Australia New Zealand National Conversation on PTSD will be held on the Sunshine Coast in Caloundra from 21-23 August 2019.This event will seek to initiate a national conversation on PTSD and explore with participants the development of a community-owned and community-operated PTSD management protocol and what should be contained within it.

With upwards of a million people in Australia suffering from it, and upwards of 3 million people living with people experiencing PTSD on a daily basis, PTSD is a national problem which requires a national response.

The aim of the National Conversation on PTSD is to highlight the impacts of PTSD on sufferers and those who support them, as well as exploring how we can best develop a national strategy to mitigate its devastating impacts on the Australian community. Critical to this will be the opportunity to discuss a wide range of factors involved in developing a comprehensive PTSD protocol that will help sufferers self-manage their condition.

This conversation also aims to bring together the disparate groups who operate in this area, creating an opportunity to speak with one voice on the issues surrounding PTSD to government, the health system and the research community.

Headline keynote speakers include Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston, AK, AC, AFC; the journalist and presenter, Mr Stan Grant, prominent medical researchers in this field, Professor David Forbes and Professor Richard Bryant, the noted journalist, Ms Natasha Exelby, former Australian Rugby League great, Mr Anthony Minichello, and Ms Petrea King, CEO/Founder of Quest for Life.

On behalf of the Conference Steering Committee, I welcome you to be part of this exciting opportunity to engage in these critical discussions and showcase and promote your business.

Admiral (Ret) Chris Barrie AC Chairman FearLess PTSD Australia & New Zealand

Who is behind the FearLess National Conversation on PTSD?FearLess PTSD Australian & New Zealand is a registered national charity that works with people living with the consequences of post traumatic stress (often referred to as PTSD). We also help family members in any way affected by it.

People who engage with FearLess come from all walks of life including those living with PTSD and their families or people who want to do their bit to make the lives of people living with post traumatic stress more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Our work complements the activities of other community-based organisations and government agencies that provide services to people with PTSD.

We have a growing national presence throughout both Australia and New Zealand, with the aim of having local representation in areas where there is a concentration of people who live with post-traumatic stress

Why Sunshine Coast? The Sunshine Coast was selected as the destination for the inaugural FearLess National Conversation on PTSD for a number of reasons. The region is home to The Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience - Thompson Institute, a world-class mental health research, teaching and clinical services facility established by the University of the Sunshine Coast through the philanthropy of Roy and Nola Thompson. FearLess has a targeted relationship with the Institute which is dedicated to the provision of innovative clinical services, education and research on some of regional Australia’s most pressing mental health issues including PTSD.

Conference supporter Sunshine Coast Council recognises the health and wellbeing and education and research industries as two of its seven high value industries. The new Sunshine Coast Health Precinct opened in 2017 and has seen significant investment in health and medical services including the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), Sunshine Coast Health Institute (SCHI) and Sunshine Coast Private Hospital. As the precinct continues to expand it will become a major regional health hub and inclusion of mental health care services are earmarked to be a prominent feature.

The region is also easily accessed from the nearby Queensland capital city of Brisbane and is known for its enviable climate and lifestyle offerings. As a result, the Sunshine Coast has a large population aged over 65 including a significant number of veterans (source: Queensland Regional Profile, 2016).

The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s most beautiful regions and this untouched part of the world is renowned for its natural environment, welcoming locals and friendly service. A safe and popular destination, the Sunshine Coast is located just one-hour north of Brisbane and is easily reached by road or air.

The conference venue, The Events Centre, Caloundra is located in one of Australia’s favourite affordable beachside destinations offering a comforting mix of “the old” and “the new” with plenty of nearby accommodation options to suit all budgets.

The Sunshine Coast Airport, conveniently located in the centre of the region and only 30 minutes’ drive from The Events Centre, offers regular domestic flight services with Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia, as well as seasonal services from Auckland with Air New Zealand. Brisbane Airport is also an international and domestic gateway to the region.
