Page 2: NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL …autolib-india.net › salis › SALIS2010.pdfinitiatives, case studies of planning and implementation of DL projects using DSpace,

The convergence of computer, electronic, network and telecommunication

technologies bring about the revolution in the field of Digital Library (DL). The first use

of the term 'Digital Library' has appeared in print in 1988. Since then enormous

amount of research work has been done across the world to popularize the use of

Digital Libraries for the benefit of the society for sharing knowledge and information

across global communities. DL initiatives are happening all over the world particularly

in academic institutions. The societal reach of the DL is lacking. Efforts should be

made so that the benefits of the DL reach all sections in the society. There are many

challenges in creating/providing digital contents including social, economical and

legal issues involved in setting-up, maintaining and using of digital libraries. These

new challenges have to be discussed among professional colleagues and with other

stake holders for finding a better solution.

Many new web tools and techniques have been developed for social networking for

sharing information on the web. The application of these new web tools should be

integrated with the DL to disseminate the contents easily and instantly.

The National Conference on 'Next Generation Digital Libraries and Web

Technologies' will throw light on the issues, challenges and opportunities on the

future DL and web technologies that would be suitable for Science, Technology,

Medicine, Economic, Culture, Academic sectors and the Society as a whole. Thus it

will pave way for the Mass Societal Participative Digital Platform.

The Conference aims at providing a national platform to all stakeholders to address,

discuss and debate issues related to the Next Generation Digital Libraries and Web

Technologies for the benefit of all sections of the society.
