1. Principal Activities And Operating ReviewTheprincipalactivitiesoftheCompanyinaccordancewithitsMemorandumandArticlesofAssociationaretopromoteandencouragetheperformanceofmusictothehigheststandards,tofurtherandpromotepublicknowledge,appreciationandenjoymentofmusic,drama,balletandthelikearts.TheoperatingreviewisoutlinedintheChairman’sStatement.

Results For The YearTheaccountsfortheyearended31stDecember2013aresetoutonpages9to15.Theresultsfortheyearonordinaryactivitiesbeforetaxationandaftertransfertocapitalredevelopmentreserveshowadeficitof€13,389aftermeetingallworkingexpensesincludingChairman’sRemunerationof€8,978andafterprovidingfordepreciationof€24,289.

Iampleasedtoreport,forthethirdchairperson’sstatementinthecurrentboard’sfive-yeartermofofficethattheNationalConcertHallhasonceagainperformedwellinwhatwasachallengingyear.ThegoodwillenjoyedbytheNCHanditsacknowledgedsuccesscouldnothavebeenachievedwithoutthededicationandhardworkofformerchairmen,withaspecialmentionforKieranTobinwhoservedas

chairmanofourcurrentboarduntiltheendofApril2013,pastandcurrentboardmembers,Governmenttogetherwithsuchdevotedandenthusiasticstaff,aswellasthecriticalsupportofourCorporateAssociates,SponsorsandFriends.IwishtorecognisetheimportantcontributionmadebythevariedcommunitieswhounfailinglycontinuetosupporttheHall.

TheFriendsofTheNationalConcertHallcontinuetoplayakeyroleforusandtheverydiverserangeofactivitieswhichwereheldspecificallyforthiscoregroupthroughouttheyearwerewellattended.OuractivitieshavebeengreatlyenhancedwiththestrongsupportshownbyourFriends.

TheNationalConcertHallwelcomed315,508patronstotheHallin2013.TheNCHhosted942eventsandachievedboxofficesalesofjustunder€6.8million.Thefinancialresultsagainexceededboardexpectationsandreflectedastrongmanagementperformance.Overall,fromabudgetof€7million,theNCHrecordedasmallnetlossof€13,389.Theaverageattendancelevels,foreventsintheauditorium,remainedstrongat74%.

Noneofthegreatmusic-makingwhichwesoproudlydelivercouldhavebeendonewithoutthecommittedsupportoftheGovernment.ThefinancialandothersupportsprovidedbytheStateareessentialtotheachievementofourambitions.IwishtoacknowledgetheunwaveringsupportreceivedbothfromtheGovernmentandparticularlyfromMinisterDeenihanandtheDepartmentofArts,HeritageandtheGaeltacht.Iwouldliketotakethisopportunitytothankthemforboththeirencouragementandguidance.

TheboardofdirectorswouldalsoliketoacknowledgeboththeOfficeofPublicWorksandDepartmentofPublic

ExpenditureandReformfortheircontinuedsupport.Wearecurrentlyworkingonaplantorefurbishthe‘KevinBarryRoom’whichprovidedthesettingfortheTreatydebates.Duetothehistoricalnatureofthisprojecttherefurbishmentwillcoincidewiththeplanned‘DecadeofCommemoration’.Therestorationofthesehistoricroomswillbealegacyforthefutureandatributetooursharedpast.

Inautumn2013theBoardoftheNationalConcertHallengagedateamofexperiencedconsultantstoprepareareport.Itexamined,inlightofthecompany’sremit,theprogrammingofperformancesintheNationalConcertHall.ItdealtwiththesalesandmarketingactivitiesbywhichthecompanyseekstoraisetheprofileoftheNationalConcertHall;toattractpatronstoeventsandtomaximiseitsrevenuefromsponsorships,fundraisingandphilanthropicdonations.Italsocoveredtheoperationalandfinancialperformanceoftheorganisation.TheNationalConcertHallseekstobuildonitshistoricalandculturalstandingbyembarkingonanexcitingdevelopmentprogrammewhichwillincludeafeasibilityreporttobuilda500seatrecitalhallonthespaceoftheoldUCDmedicallibrary.

Aboardsub-committeeinconjunctionwiththeseniormanagementteamoftheNCHwasappointedtooverseetheimplementationofthereport’srecommendations.Iwishtoacknowledgethecommittee’sdedicationtothistask.ThisreviewwillprovideguidanceandapathwayfortheNationalConcertHalltofollowinthefuture.

Toconclude,IwishtotakethisopportunitytoacknowledgethesupportandenthusiasticinvolvementofmyfellowdirectorsinourvariousBoardactivities,particularlyinthestrategicdirectionfortheNationalConcertHall.Finally,IwouldliketocongratulateandthankalltheNationalConcertHallteamfortheirhardwork,dedicationandenthusiasm.

IampleasedtoreportonanotherverybusyyearfortheNationalConcertHallwithmanynotableartisticandcommercialsuccesses.

Againstabackgroundoffallinggrant-in-aidandaneconomyonlyjustemergingfromrecessiontheoveralloperatingresultisverysatisfactory,particularlyasthescheduleofown–promotedeventscontinuedtogrowandtheprogrammeasawhole

remainedstrong.TheNationalConcertHallremainsattheforefrontofmusicinIreland,continuingtoprovidetheIrishpublictheopportunitytoheartheworld’sgreatestmusicians,toshowcasethebestthatIrelandhastoofferandtopresentanevermorediverserangeofmusicalexperiences.

BroadeningtheprogrammeandbringinginnewaudiencesisoneofthekeystrategicobjectivesfortheNationalConcertHall,aimedatbringingthejoyofmusic,inallitsforms,toanever-increasingnumberofindividuals.Inthisregard,thesuccessofthesummerseasoninattractingcloseto50%first-timeattendeesisparticularlynoteworthyandunderlinestheimportanceofculturaltourism,bypromotingthefinestIrishpopularandtraditionalmusicians.Theannouncementofanewseriesfor2014,‘Perspectives’,seestheHallcontinuingtolookbeyondtheclassicalworldtobringsomeofthefinestcontemporaryartistsfromacrossthemusicalspectrum.

However,theHall’sartisticflagshipremainsitsInternationalConcertSeries.Perhapsthemosteagerlyawaitedconcertof2013wasthefirstvisittoIrelandbytherenownedAmericansopranoRenéeFleming,arecitalwithpianistMaciejPikulskithatdemonstratedwhythisartistisoneofthebest-lovedclassicalartistsperformingtoday.AnotheroperaticstarvisitorwastheMaltesetenorJosephCalleja,accompaniedbytheRTÉNationalSymphonyOrchestraunderProinnsíasÓDuinninOctoberandjoinedbytheNationalConcertHall’s‘RisingStar’for2012ClaudiaBoyleinaterrificeveningofoperaticfavouritesdeliveredwithgreatélanbyallconcerned.

TheInternationalOrchestraSeriesbroughtvisitsinthespringfromthePolishRadioSymphonyOrchestrawithJacekKaspszyk;theAcademyofAncientMusic(withcounter-tenorAndreasSchollinfinevoice,replacingAngelikaKirchschlager

atshortnotice);theMoscowStateSymphonyOrchestraandPavelKogan(adeeplymovingTchaikovskyPathétique)andthePhilharmoniaOrchestraunderPaavoJärviwithpianistPaulLewis,theperformancesofMozart’sPianoConcertoNo.23andDvorák’sSymphonyNo.9bringingnewinsightsandfreshnesstooldfavourites.

The2013/14InternationalConcertSeasonlaunchedwiththeOsloPhilharmonicOrchestraunderVasilyPetrenko,withNorwegianpianistChristianIhleHadlanddeliveringaparticularlymemorableandintenselypersonalperformanceoftheGriegPianoConcerto.WonderfulorchestralplayingcamealsofromtheSãoPauloSymphonyOrchestra,thefirstLatin-AmericanorchestratofeatureintheInternationalConcertSeries.UnderMarinAlsop,theperformanceofMahler’stitanicfirstsymphonywasbothexhilaratingandmoving,whilsttheorchestrarevelledinthevirtuosicopportunitiesofferedbythesuitefromBernstein’sWestSideStory.

Anewchoralstrandgotofftotheperfectstartwithtwosell-outconcertsbyTheSixteen,directedbyHarryChristophers.Thefirstofthese,astunningacappellaconcertofmusicbyPalestrinaandJamesMacMillaninSt.Patrick’sCathedral,wasmanypeople’smusicalhighlightoftheyear,whilstothersmightpointtothetranscendentalperformancesbyLeifOveAndsnesandtheMahlerChamberOrchestraoftwoofBeethoven’spianoconcertosinNovember.

ThePianoMastersseriesbroughtanIrishdebutbythecelebratedRussianNikolaiLugansky(predictablyoutstandinginRachmaninov)andanNCHrecitaldebutforthehugelytalentedyoungBritishpianistBenjaminGrosvenor.TwoIrishpianistspresentedimaginativeandunusualprogrammes.InFebruaryMíceálO’RourkewasjoinedbypresenterStephenAckertfromtheNationalGalleryofArtinWashington,withartsworksfromthemuseum’scollectionprovidinganunusualandstimulatingbackdropforperformancesofDebussyandMussorgsky’sPicturesatanExhibition.InOctoberPhilipMartinbroughthiscomposer’ssensibilitiestotheforein‘VisionsoftheNight’,incorporatinganumberofhisownworksintoanocturnallyinspiredprogrammeofMozart,Chopin,BeethovenandGottschalk.

TheHallalsolaunchedanewSundayMatineeseriesinOctober,presentingrecitalsbyDublin-bornmezzoAnn


MurrayandNewZealandbaritoneJonathanLemaluaswellasaperformancebytheBrazilianGuitarQuartet,whichalsoformedpartofaLatin-AmericanweekendtotieinwiththevisitoftheSãoPauloSymphonyOrchestraandroundedoffbytheamazingArgentinianbandoneonplayerDinoSaluzzi.OthernotableeventsincludedthepresentationoftheNationalConcertHallLifetimeAchievementAwardtoSirJamesGalwayinagalaconcertinNovemberand,atthestartoftheyear,araresoloappearancebytheinternationallyreveredjazzpianistKeithJarrett,aconcertthatsoldoutinfortyeighthoursandliveduptoeveryexpectationinanextraordinaryeveningofimprovisedmusic.

Asalreadymentioned,theHall’sSummerSeasonwentfromstrengthtostrengthwithsell-outconcertsbyBryanFerry,SinéadO’ConnorandSpiritualizedandtwoconcertscuratedbytraditionalfiddlerparexcellenceMartinHayes,includingafascinatingcombinationwithearlymusiclegendJordiSavall.Theseriesprovedprofitableandreturnedstrongaudiencesforallconcerts.Likewise,the‘ESBLive’seriessawLudovicoEinaudi,BellX1andPinkMartiniallperformsell-outconcerts.FamilyeventsfeaturedmoresignificantlyintheprogrammewithaweekendofWallaceandGromit’sMusicalMarvelsaddingtothetraditionalChristmasoffering:nolessthantensoldoutshowsfeaturing‘TheSnowman’.

TheHall’slongrelationshipwithRTÉPerformingGroupsremainsofvitalimportancetotheartisticandfinancialhealthoftheHallandtheresidentRTÉNationalSymphonyOrchestraandtheRTÉConcertOrchestragaveusmanyoutstandingconcertsduringtheyear.

TheRTÉCObroughtus,asusual,amazingvariety,rangingfromitsSignatureSeries(UteLemper,DanielleDeNiese,KurtElling,andBrynTerfel)toAbbaandDiscoInfernoviathefilmmusicofJohnWilliamsandscreeningsofSingin’intheRainandTheWizardofOz,tomentionjustsome.TheannouncementoftheappointmentofJohnWilsonasPrincipalConductoroftheRTÉCOinSeptemberbodeswellfortheorchestra’sfuture,buildingonthegreatworkofthedepartingDavidBrophy.

ThesynergywithRTÉalsoborefruitinthefirst‘NewMusicDublin’festivalofcontemporarymusicoverthefirstweekendinMarch,afour-waypartnershipbetweentheNationalConcertHall,RTÉ,TheArtsCouncilandtheContemporaryMusicCentre.

Inspiteofreductionsinbudget,theHall’sEducation,CommunityandOutreachprogrammecontinuedtomakesignificantimpactonthelivesofmanypeople.‘Kid’sClassics’deliveredmusicalperformancesdirectlyintothechildren’shospitalsinCrumlin,TallaghtandTempleStreet,withthegeneroussupportoftheCommunityFoundation.Attheotherendofthelifecycle‘Health&Harmony’wasa12-monthpilotprojectforpatientssufferingfromdementiaandtheirfamilies,supportedbyagrantfromTheIrelandFunds.InMaywecelebratedBealtaineFestivalofCreativityinOlderAgebypartneringwithLouthCountyCounciltohostaseriesofperformancesthroughoutLouthfocusingontheelderly,includingvisitstonursinghomesandSeniorCitizensGroups.The‘BlowtheDustoffyourTrumpet’Orchestra,celebrateditsfourthanniversaryduringthisfestivalwithaconcertofViennesefavouriteshostedbyRonanCollinsand‘TheDusties’werealsojoinedbymembersoftheNationalYouthOrchestraoverthesummerforcombinedrehearsalsandtogethertheylaunchedPositiveAgeingWeekattheendofSeptember.

InNovember,theHallpartneredwiththeMahlerChamberOrchestratopresentFeeltheMusicaprojectseriesrunbyMCOLandings,theeducationandoutreachprogrammeoftheMahlerChamberOrchestraandsponsoredbyKBCBank.PupilsfromStMary’sSchoolforDeafGirlswereinvitedintotheworldoftheorchestra,toexplorehowmusiccanbeexperiencedwithallsenses.

IntheHall,theever-popularmusicworkshopsforbabiesandyoungchildren,MiniMusic,continuedin2013,addinganadditionalclassinSeptemberfor5–9yearolds.AspartoftheLifetimeAchievementAwardtoSirJamesGalway,30youngflautistsfromboththeRoyalIrishAcademyofMusicandDITConservatoryofMusicandDramajoinedSirJamesonstageandwehostedmaster-classeswithpianistPhilipMartinandbaritoneJonathanLemalu.

TheNationalConcertHall’s‘RisingStar’for2013wasthecellistBrianO’KaneandEmmaO’HalloranwasawardedtheJeromeHynesYoungComposers’Competition.Emma’snewcompositionCageswaspremieredattheinauguralNewMusicDublinfestival.ThebiennialNationalConcertHallYoungMusicians’AwardtosupportthedevelopmentoftalentedyoungstringplayersinIrelandwassharedbetweenKillianWhite,ChristopherEllis,PhoebeWhiteandDavidTobin.JenniferDaviswasawardedtheBernadetteGreevyBursaryinJuneandthepreviouswinnerRachelKelly,gaveherwinner’srecitalon2ndOctoberintheJohnFieldRoom.TheHallwasalsodelightedtosupporttheVeronicaDunneInternationalSingingCompetitioninJanuary.

AmajordevelopmentfortheNationalConcertHallin2013wascommencingaresidencyprogrammeforothermusicorganisations.ThissawboththeChamberChoirofIreland(formerlyNationalChamberChoir)andtheIrishBaroqueOrchestrajoiningtheRTÉNSOasensemblesinresidenceandMusicNetworkandMusicGenerationbeingprovidedofficespaceonthesecondfloor.Inaddition,fivesingersongwritersweregivencreativestudiospaceinwhichtoworkandcompose.ThisprogrammehasaddedgreatlytothesignificanceoftheNationalConcertHallasacentreofmusicalexcellenceandhasbroughtadditionalvibrancyandpurposetotheHall’sroleasanationalculturalinstitution.Inaddition,theresidentensemblescontributetotheHall’seducationalprogramme.

AsIsaidattheoutset,averybusyandsuccessfulyear,allofwhichcanonlybeachievedbythededicationandhardworkofmany.IwouldliketotakethisopportunityofthankingallthestaffoftheNationalConcertHallfortheirenthusiasmandcommitment–avenuesuchasthisdependsonrealteameffort,fromprogramming,planningandeducationthroughmarketingandsales,boxoffice,financeandITtofrontofhouseandback-stagecrew.IwouldalsoliketothanktheBoardoftheNationalConcertHallforalltheirvoluntarytimeandeffort;MinisterDeenihanandtheDepartmentofArts,HeritageandtheGaeltachtfortheircontinuedsupportandtheOfficeofPublicWorks,whomaintainourmuch-lovedbuilding.
