• Colorado College split a pair of games at the Ledyard Classic last weekend, dropping the opening game to host Dartmouth, 5-2, on Saturday, before bouncing back for a 7-3 win over St. Lawrence on Sunday. CC’s seven goals against the Saints matched the team’s season high against Princeton on Dec. 6, while the Tigers’ 45 shots vs. SLU were a season high and the most in one game since putting 49 on goal against Vermont on Dec. 8, 2018.

• Senior forward Chris Wilkie recorded his first career hat trick in Sunday’s win over St. Lawrence, with all three goals coming in the third period. He’s the fourth NCHC player to record a hat trick this season and the first Tiger to do so since current sophomore forward Ben Copeland notched four against Western Michigan on Feb. 22, 2019 last season. Wilkie is also the first Tiger to score three goals in one period since Oct. 19, 2012 (Andrew Hamburg vs. Air Force). Wilkie now leads the NCHC with 13 goals, which ties for second nationally, while his 0.81 goals per game are first in the NCAA.

Offensively, UND’s 4.18 goals per game are first in the NCAA, having scored at least seven goals four different times this season, including in its last NCAA game.

• Sophomore goaltender Adam Scheel made a career-high 41 saves in the Dec. 6, 1-0 overtime win at WMU for his second shutout of the sea-son and third of his career. His 1.56 GAA ranks third nationally this year.

HATS OFF AND RECORDS TIED: After only two hat tricks were tallied by NCHC players over the first 11 weeks this season, hat tricks were recorded by NCHC players on back-to-back nights last weekend. First, St. Cloud State freshman forward Zach Okabe tied an NCHC record with four goals last Saturday in a win over Minnesota State, the first four goals of his career. He’s the fourth NCHC player ever to score four goals in a game, including second Husky (Joey Benik on Nov. 14, 2015 at Western Michigan) and the first since current Colorado College sophomore forward Ben Copeland tallied four as a freshman last season on Feb. 23, 2019 also against WMU. CC senior forward Chris Wilkie then tallied his first career hat trick on Sunday in a win over St. Lawrence. Omaha junior forward Kevin Conley recorded his first career hat trick on Nov. 16 against WMU, while WMU sophomore forward Rhett Kingston was the first NCHC player to notch a hat trick this season with his first career hat trick on Nov. 9 at Ferris State, which were his first three goals of the season.

CAPTAIN AMERICA CALLS NCHC HOME: Western Michigan sophomore defenseman Mattias Samuelsson served as captain of the U.S. National Junior Team this year at the IIHF World Junior Championship, marking the third straight season Team USA’s captain has come from the NCHC after former Minnesota Duluth defenseman Mikey Anderson held the honor last year and his brother, former UMD forward Joey Anderson, did so in 2018. Former Miami forward Riley Barber also served as the U.S. captain in 2014 giving the NCHC four U.S. National Junior Team captains in seven years.

HOISTING THE SPENGLER CUP: While five NCHC players were at the World Junior Championship, Denver junior defenseman and captain Ian Mitchell played for Team Canada at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, helping Canada win the Spengler Cup for the 16th time overall and fourth time in five years. The Blackhawks draft pick scored a goal and added two assists in the tournament. Mitchell was the only current college hockey player on the roster and marked the second straight season the NCHC has been represented on Team Canada at the Spengler Cup after former Western Michigan forward Colt Conrad played in the six-team club tournament last year.

POLL POSITIONS: The NCHC is home to the No. 1 team in the country for the second straight poll after North Dakota remained in the top spot. Four NCHC teams are ranked in the latest USCHO.com Poll (Dec. 30), including three in the top 10. Three NCHC teams rank in the top 10 in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll, as well. (page 10) • Three NCHC teams (Denver, Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota) have now held the top spot in eight of 13 USCHO.com Polls so far this season. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll in 68 of 85 polls. • Over the last six seasons, an NCHC team has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO Poll 85 weeks, 70 more weeks than any other conference combined (Big Ten second at 15 weeks). Four different NCHC teams (DU, UMD, UND and St. Cloud State) have all held the No. 1 ranking for at least 19 weeks during that span, all more than any other conference combined.

WHAT A SHOT SHOW: Three NCHC teams rank in the top nine nationally in shots on goal per game. Denver is fourth in the country and tops in the NCHC in shots on goal per game averaging 35.11 shots on target per game. Western Michigan is sixth nationally in shots on goal (33.62), while Minnesota Duluth is ninth (32.50). North Dakota leads the country in fewest shots on goal allowed per game, giving up only 21.88 shots on goal per game to its opponents.

ALL THEY DO IS (SCORE TO) WIN: Six players nationally have scored an NCAA-best four game-winning goals this season and two reside in the NCHC in North Dakota junior forward Jordan Kawaguchi and Omaha freshman forward Joey Abate. All four of Kawaguchi’s game-winners came in November, while Abate’s first four goals this season were game-winners. Both now have seven goals overall on the season. (page 29)

WHAT HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE?: A third of the way through the 96-game NCHC conference slate and road teams are having more success than home teams in conference play. Road teams went 2-2 in the last conference games on Dec. 13-14 and are now 16-12-4 in NCHC conference play this season for a .563 win percentage away from home.

He also fired two shots on goal Friday. The next night, Brink helped cap the sweep in Colorado Springs, again breaking a scoreless deadlock midway through the second period with a nifty back-hand goal to put DU up 1-0 in an eventual 3-1 victory. He put two more shots on net and was +1 in Saturday’s win. Brink finished the series with a goal, an assist, four shots on goal and was +1.

He turned aside all 24 shots he faced, including 11 in the third period, for his first shutout of the season in only his third start/appearance this year. It was his fifth career whitewash after four last season. Of his 24 saves, four came short-handed as he helped kill all three CC power plays. Kawaguchi scored or assisted on seven game-winning goals during November and

ranked third nationally with 16 points, leading North Dakota to an unbeaten month (8-0-1). Kawaguchi averaged 1.78 ppg in November, which was second in the NCAA, with at least a point in eight of the nine games, including five multi-point outings. UND’s assistant captain scored six goals to tie for ninth nationally, four of which were game-winners to lead the NCAA in November. He also dished out 10 assists, includ-ing three primary helpers on game-winning goals, which tied for sixth in the NCAA. Kawaguchi was twice named NCHC Forward of the Week in November and NCAA Third Star of the Week once after a six-point weekend in a sweep of Miami on Nov. 8-9. His other NCHC weekly honor came after a three-goal, four-point series to close November, guiding UND to its first road sweep of Minnesota since 2006-07 by tallying both game-winners. He also notched four points in UND’s sweep of St. Cloud State a week-end earlier (Nov. 22-23) to finish the month on a four-game point streak. He was +9 in November.

NCHC moNtHLy HoNoRS - NovembeR

After notching one point in his first month, Savage led all NCHC rookies in scoring

with seven points in eight November games. His 0.88 ppg also led all NCHC newcomers. He scored two goals, while his five assists were tops among NCHC freshmen in No-vember, as well. Savage had a point in four games, including two multi-point games. Although the points didn’t count, Savage started November with a three-point game in an exhibition win over the U.S. U-18 Team. He then recorded his first real points of the month at North Dakota on Nov. 9 when he scored his second career goal and added a primary assist in defeat for his first multi-point game. Savage had his biggest weekend at Omaha on Nov. 22-23, helping MU pick up five points in the series. The draft-eligible forward notched a career-high three points in a 3-3 overtime tie in the series opener, having a hand in each goal, scoring one, and then gave MU the extra conference point with a 3-on-3 overtime goal. The following night he handed out an assist in a 4-1 win as he earned NCHC Rookie of the Week honors.

Scheel went undefeated in November, playing every minute in goal for UND to

backstop the Fighting Hawks to an 8-0-1 record in the month. The eight wins were three more than any other NCHC netminder in November and ranked second nationally, while his .944 win percentage was third in the country. He led the NCHC with a .918 save percentage and a 1.75 GAA, while allowing only one goal in five of his nine games during the month. Scheel topped 20 saves four times in November, including a season-high 30 saves in a 1-1 overtime tie at Denver on Nov. 15. He then made 27 more saves the next night in a 4-1 win to help UND record its first series win at Magness Arena since 2003-04. He allowed just two goals against the Pio-neers to earn NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors and NCAA Second Star of the Week. He finished his month backstopping UND to its first sweep at rival Minnesota since 2006-07, compiling 41 saves in the two wins to capture his second NCHC Goalie of the Week accolade in the month. Scheel finished No-vember with 180 saves on 196 shots faced.

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose

Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.

SATURDAY, DEC. 28

Three NCHC teams returned from holiday break on Saturday, with St. Cloud State winning in its holiday tournament opener

and Colorado College falling in its tournament opener, while top-ranked North Dakota won its exhibition outing. The Hus-kies stunned No. 2/2 Minnesota State, 7-2, in the first game of the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis to advance to Sunday’s final behind an NCHC-record-tying four goals from freshman forward Zach Okabe. In the night cap of the Ledyard Classic in Hanover, N.H., Colorado College dropped a 5-2 decision to tourna-ment-host Dartmouth. In exhibition action, No. 1/1 North Dakota topped the U.S. Under-18 Team, 3-1, in Plymouth, Mich. as three Fighting Hawks found the back of the net.

ST. CLOUD STATE 7, No. 2/2 MINNESOTA STATE 2Returning from a 14-day holiday break, St. Cloud State came out firing on all cylinders, thumping No. 2/2 Minnesota State, 7-2, in the first game of the Mariucci Classic Saturday afternoon at 3M Arena at Mariucci. With the win, SCSU (6-7-4) advances to Sunday night’s final against in-state rival and tournament-host Minnesota, who knocked off Bemidji State in Saturday’s night-cap. The Huskies struck twice in the first period and four times in the second period to take control, with freshman forward Zach Okabe scoring SCSU’s first three goals and four of their first five, tying an NCHC record for goals in a game. He opened the scoring at 5:22 of the game and made it 3-0 with a natural hat trick, the first hat trick of his career, early in the second stanza, adding his final goal six minutes later to make it 5-1, after the Mavericks (15-3-1) finally broke through. Fellow freshman Jami Krannila assisted on all four of Okabe’s markers for a career high. SCSU outshot Minnesota State, 25-18, in the win, including 12-5 in the middle period.

DARTMOUTH 5, COLORADO COLLEGE 2Unlike St. Cloud State, Colorado College’s return from a 14-day layoff didn’t go as well, as the Tigers fell in the opening round of the Ledyard Classic to host Dartmouth, 5-2, Saturday night in Hanover, N.H. CC (6-8-1) is now sitting on a season-long three-game losing streak heading into Sunday’s tournament finale against St. Lawrence. The Big Green (5-4-2) jumped in front quickly, striking only 1:23 into the game, but sophomore cap-tain and forward Grant Cruikshank tied it just 1:27 later, taking advantage of a Dartmouth turnover. The Big Green’s power play then took over, tacking on man-advantage goals late in both the first and second periods to go up 3-1. Senior forward Chris Wilkie answered for CC with his team-leading 10th goal soon after to make it a one-goal game, but Dartmouth had a response of their own with 1:26 left in the middle period to restore their two-goal lead and sealed the victory with a late empty-netter in the third period. Dartmouth outshot CC, 40-31, in the win, with CC fresh-man Matt Vernon stopping 35 shots. The Tigers went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Big Green were 2-for-4.

No. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA 3, U.S. UNDER-18 TEAM 1 (Exhibition)Although it doesn’t officially count as a win, top-ranked North Dakota showed little signs of rust in a 3-1 exhibition victory at the U.S. Under-18 Team in Plymouth, Mich. Saturday night, de-spite missing two players to the World Junior Championship and three others to illness. UND (14-1-2) is riding a 13-game un-

beaten streak in NCAA play, last playing on Dec.7, 21 days ago. Sophomore defenseman Jonny Tychonick opened the scoring with 2:21 left in the opening period, finishing a centering pass from junior forward Collin Adams on the power play. After a scoreless second stanza, UND made it 2-0 midway through the final frame when Adams scored himself for his second point of the night. The U-18s broke up the shutout with 1:31 remaining in the game on the power play to make it 2-1, but sophomore forward Jasper Weatherby sealed the exhibition win with an empty-netter. UND outshot the U-18 squad, 25-19.

SUNDAY, DEC. 29

One day after Colorado College and St. Cloud State split a pair of games at holiday tournaments, the two teams finished

their holiday tournaments on Sunday by doing the opposite of Saturday, while a third NCHC team returned from holiday break with success out east. The Tigers rolled past St. Lawrence, 7-3, in their finale at the Ledyard Classic, behind senior forward Chris Wilkie’s first career hat trick, to snap a three-game losing skid. No. 10/11 Minnesota Duluth ended a 22-day layoff with a 4-1 win at Merrimack, striking twice in each of the final two periods after shaking off the rust in the opener of a two-game set. After thumping second-ranked Minnesota State on Saturday, St. Cloud State couldn’t find a repeat performance on Sunday, falling to rival Minnesota, 4-1, in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic, as the Gophers won their own tournament.

COLORADO COLLEGE 7, ST. LAWRENCE 3After dropping its first game in the Ledyard Classic, Colorado Col-lege snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over St. Lawrence in its final game of the holiday tournament, hosted by Dartmouth at Thompson Arena in Hanover, N.H. The Tigers (7-8-1) used a strong power play and a big third period to top the Saints, as senior forward Chris Wilkie recorded his first career hat trick, all in the final 20 minutes, to lead the way. After allowing the game’s first goal in the closing minutes of the first frame on a SLU power play, CC responded with 24 ticks remaining in the opening period as senior forward Nick Halloran stole the puck behind the net and tallied short-handed to tie the game. The Tigers grabbed a 3-2 lead over the Saints (3-13-3) in the second period, while Wilkie took over the final frame. He scored his first goal only 42 ticks into the period off a feed from Halloran, while he tallied unassisted on the power play less than 90 seconds lat-er. He then capped his first career hat trick with a second power play marker 7:11 into the third period, while CC’s final goal came only 10 seconds after that. The Tigers outshot SLU, 45-36, and went 2-for-4 on the power play.

No. 10/11 MINNESOTA DULUTH 4, MERRIMACK 1Returning from a 22-day layoff, No. 10/11 Minnesota Duluth scored the game’s final four goals in downing Merrimack, 4-1, in North Andover, Mass. Sunday in the opener of a two-game series. The Bulldogs (10-6-1) dominated the opening period, outshooting Merrimack (4-12-2), 16-1, but the Warriors’ Troy Kobryn stopped them all to keep it scoreless after 20 minutes. Merrimack then took the lead on the power play early in the second stanza, but three minutes later sophomore forward Cole Koepke tied it for UMD with a short-handed tally. Junior forward Kobe Roth then gave the Bulldogs the lead for good in the clos-

ing minutes of the second period with the game-winning goal. Sophomore forward Jackson Cates made it 3-1 on the power play early in the final frame, finishing a feed from his brother, Noah, while a late goal from junior forward Justin Richards com-pleted the scoring. UMD outshot Merrimack, 38-25, in the win.

MINNESOTA 4, ST. CLOUD STATE 1Unable to find its offense from Saturday’s upset win over No. 2/2 Minnesota State, St. Cloud State fell to in-state rival Min-nesota, 4-1, in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic on Sunday night at 3M Arena. After a scoreless first frame, the Gophers (7-9-4) broke through with a flurry of goals early in the second stanza, striking three times in a span of 1:40. Sammy Walker opened the scoring for Minnesota on the power play 3:46 into the period, while Tyler Nanne and Bryce Brodzinski tacked on goals over the next 100 seconds to break the game open. The Gophers added an empty-net goal in the final period to make it 4-0, before the Huskies (6-8-4) finally broke through with a late goal from sophomore forward Micah Miller. Minneso-ta, which won its own tournament, outshot SCSU, 33-25, and killed all four Huskies power plays.

MONDAY, DEC. 30

On the final night of action in 2019, the NCHC went out with a bang, going 2-0 as Miami and No. 10 Minnesota Duluth

combined to pick up a pair of non-conference road wins Monday. The RedHawks, who hadn’t played in 23 days, doubled up in-state rival and 11th-ranked Bowling Green, 4-2, snapping a four-game losing streak and earning a home-and-home split with the Falcons after BGSU won in Oxford in the season opener. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, went out east and completed a sweep of Merrimack with a 5-1 victory in Massachusetts behind a big second period. These were the final non-conference games this season for both teams.

MIAMI 4, No. 11/11 BOWLING GREEN 2Returning from a 23-day layoff, Miami came out firing on all cylinders to snap a four-game losing streak by downing former CCHA rival No. 11/11 Bowling Green, 4-2, Monday night at Slater Family Ice Arena. With the win (5-10-3), the RedHawks earned a home-and-home series split with BGSU (12-7-1), after the Fal-cons won in Oxford to open the season. Miami scored twice on the power play in the win, while senior forwards Karch Bachman and Gordie Green tallied a goal and two assists each, with Green becoming the first active NCHC player with 100 career points. After a mostly scoreless first frame, Miami struck twice in a two-minute span late in the opening period, first on the pow-er play off the stick of freshman forward Ryan Savage, while redshirt junior forward Christian Mohs doubled the lead 1:49 later with his second goal of the year. A man-advantage marker from Green in front of net, his 100th career point, made it 3-0 Red-Hawks early in the second stanza, before BGSU broke through midway through the period. The Falcons closed within one in the third period, but an empty-netter from Bachman sealed the win. Senior goalie Ryan Larkin totaled 35 saves in net for MU as BGSU outshot Miami, 37-31.

No. 10/10 MINNESOTA DULUTH 5, MERRIMACK 1Behind a three-goal second period, 10th-ranked Minnesota Duluth cruised to a 5-1 win at Merrimack Monday afternoon at Lawler Rink to complete a road sweep and extend the Bulldogs’ (11-6-1) win streak to four games. Sophomore forward Cole Koepke paced the UMD offense with three points, scoring the game’s opening goal with 1:59 left in the first frame. The Bull-dogs then poured it on in the second period with junior defen-seman Louie Roehl and junior forward Justin Richards scoring 37 seconds apart midway through the middle frame to make it 3-0. A power play goal from fellow junior forward Nick Swaney late in the second period put the game out of reach, before the War-riors (4-13-2) broke through with an unassisted goal in the third period to break up senior Hunter Shepard’s shutout. Sophomore forward Noah Cates notched UMD’s final tally of the night. The Bulldogs outshot Merrimack, 26-17, in the win.
