Natalias Wish

At just 10 years of age, Natalia’s compassion for others is contagious. She does not let the fight against her brain tumor keep her from focusing on what matters most – showing kindness to others. When Make-A-Wish ® volunteers met with Natalia, she did not want her wish to be about her – she wanted to help people. “She asked me if we could feed the hungry,” says Natalia’s mother Kelly. Natalia decided more than anything she wanted to give warmth to the homeless on the inside and out. “I would like to give people soup and blankets. I don’t want there to be hunger.” At such a young age, Natalia’s genuine concern for the well-being of others astonishes everyone she meets. Her father, Byron, remarks, “What kind of ten-year-old kid wishes to feed the hungry and give the hungry blankets, when they get told they can pretty much have anything they want?” Part of what inspired Natalia’s wish is the reaction her body has to treatment. Natalia’s fight against cancer causes her to feel extremely cold, which got her thinking about “how cold people without homes must be.” For her wish, Natalia met with famous Master Chef Jean- Robert de Cavel at his Cincinnati restaurant Jean-Robert’s Table. Natalia illuminated the kitchen with her joy as the two chefs worked together on a culinary masterpiece that would not only warm stomachs, but warm hearts too. With the help of “chef,” as Natalia calls him, and her family, they created a hearty minestrone-like soup with Natalia’s favorite addition – bowtie pasta! Jean-Robert shares in his time spent with Natalia, she taught him what matters most in life. “You see what this 10-year-old (Natalia) is going through and it makes you feel like enjoy life, enjoy your friends, enjoy your family.” Natalia officially named her soup “Chef Natalia’s Soup of Love” to remind all who enjoy it the most important ingredient in life is showing love to others. “Her caring spirit has a life-changing impact on everyone she meets and all who will taste her soup,” says her Wish Program Manager, Kate Berliner. “Natalia speaks eloquently and passionately about her wish,” says one of her Make-A-Wish volunteers, Jessica King. “She wants to help people in a way that goes on forever and ever and ever.” Make-A-Wish ® is a community-driven grass-roots organization.
