What is an annuity? Charming Ball Orientation Chicago, IL - The M. Konopnicka Adult CultureGroup invites high school age PRCUA members fromDistricts 6, 7, 8, and 9, and their parents, to a luncheon andinformational meeting for candidates who want toparticipate in the 2015 "Cinderella - Prince Charming Ball.”The orientation will be on Sunday, September 20, 2015, at1 p.m. at Camelot Banquets, 8624 W. 95th St., HickoryHills, IL.

PRCUA WELCOMES POPEFRANCIS TO AMERICA

Pope Francis will begin his first pilgrimage to the UnitedStates on Tuesday, September 22, 2015. He is scheduled to arrivein Washington, D.C., after making a three-day visit to Cuba. OnWednesday, Sept. 23, the Pope will meet with U.S. PresidentBarack Obama at the White House. At 11:30 a.m. he will attendthe midday prayer with U.S. bishops at Saint Matthew’s Cathedralin D.C. In the late afternoon, Pope Francis will canonize BlessedJunipero Serra at Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of theImmaculate Conception. The next day, the Pope will address a joint meeting ofCongress. Then, he will visit St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in D.C.and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. He isscheduled to leave Washington, D.C. and arrive in New York at5:00 p.m. Later, he will attend an evening prayer at St. Patrick’sCathedral. On the morning on Friday, Sept. 25, Pope Francis will attend aUnited Nations General Assembly, and a multi-religious service atthe 9/11 Memorial and Museum, World Trade Center. In theevening, he will visit Our Lady Queen of Angels School in EastHarlem and celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Pope will leave New York andarrive in Philadelphia, PA, around 9:30 a.m. From the airport, hewill go to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, where hewill celebrate Mass. Later, he will pay a vistit to IndependenceMall and the Festival of Families at Benjamin Franklin Parkway,where he will attend a Prayer Vigil with the World Meeting ofFamilies. On the last day of his visit to the U.S., Pope Francis will beginby meeting with Bishops in St. Martin’s Chapel at St. CharlesBorromeo Seminary. Later that morning, he is scheduled to visitto Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. In the afteroon, thePope will celebrate Mass for the World Meeting of Families. Justbefore his departure to Rome, the Holy Father will meet with theorganizers, volunteers and benefactors of the World Meeting ofFamilies at Atlantic Aviation.

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed and in mid-September, I will be celebrating my firstanniversary in office as the Vice President of the PRCUA! I have found this year to be exciting, challenging,very educational and engaging! There are so many events to attend that celebrate our PRCUA Youth – theShirley Ann Galanty Michigan State Ball, the Cinderella-Prince Charming Ball, Milestone Anniversaries ofour Dance Schools (2015 celebrated 30 years for Southwest Center of Polish Dancing, 10 years for Zajaczek,15 years for Polanie) and the continued success of all our schools and graduations from Polish Grammarand High School. There were events that celebrated our rich Polish heritage from the Oplatek, Wigilia, andSwieconka gatherings to those that celebrate family and friends with picnics, banquets and dinner dances.There are Polish Heritage Festivals throughout the country and in our backyards: Taste of Polonia, Taste ofPierogi, Pierogi Fest, Polish Heritage Festivals in Grand Rapids, MI; PolishFest in Twin Cities, MN andMilwaukee, WI. And then there were our PRCUA National Sports Tournaments: starting with Basketball inDearborn MI (St. Stan’s #718); continuing with Bowling in Muskegon, MI (St. Michael the Archangel #78);Golf in Hammond, IN (Our Lady Queen of Poland #413) and just last month, Softball in Big Rapids, MI (St.Rita’s #1368). We didn’t just play together, we prayed together at, among others, the Sacred Heart Mass, theBlessing of the Polish Dance Schools, etc. That is what being Fraternal is all about – together we weatherstorms, so that together we can enjoy the sunshine! Thank you to all who made this an exciting andmemorable year! Speaking of Festivals, just in August alone Agnieszka Bastrzyk (Director of Marketing) and RobertFattore (Director of Sales) attended the Twin Cities Polish Fest (MN) chaired by Edziu Rajtar (Soc. #445);Bob Fattore joined Bob Hojnacki at the Polish Heritage Society Festival in Grand Rapids MI; EdwardMuszalski (Supervisor of Sales D22) manned the PRCUA booth at the Taste of Pierogi in Bridgeview (IL)joined by Julie and Emily Prado where Polonia Ensemble (under the direction of Anna Krysinski)presented Polish dances and songs to an enthusiastic audience. Jaclyn Krysinski, emceed the programflawlessly. If you missed any of these, make sure you don’t miss the next one - check the PRCUA calendarfor a Festival or picnic near you. If you are in the Chicago area, do not forget the upcoming Taste of Polonia(Labor Day weekend) at the Copernicus Center or the Polish Heritage Festival in Michigan City IN(September 13th) – Polonia Ensemble will be performing at the former; Wesoly Lud, Wesoly Ludek andPolanie at the latter. If you are near Hamtramck, MI – don’t miss the city’s Labor Day Festival (you’ll see afew familiar Michiganders in the parade, look for PRCUA President Joseph A. Drobot, Jr.)

D8) and Tadeusz Lechcelebrated their 40th weddinganniversary on August 2nd; Barbaraand James (Dir. The weather was perfect, the entertainmentfun and the Air and Water Show spectacular. President AnnaMorzy and Executive Director Bogdan Pukszta organized anamazing event which was sold out in no time. It was nice tosee Deputy Consul General Robert Rusiecki and his wifeamong other familiar faces (Mary Sendra Anselmo andBozena Haszlakiewicz past and current Presidents of theLegion of Young Polish Women with their spouses) enjoyingthe “Summer of George”.

The 63rd PRCUA National Softball Tournament inBig Rapids, MI with Jason Losinski at the helm, ably assisted by Jerry Lubiarz, was a total success. Thirteenteams participated – 4 coed, 3 women and 6 men – on a perfect weather weekend. St. Rita’s Society #1368hosted the event which began on Friday night with the Coed games starting the ball rolling. 7, Polish Heritage Day wascelebrated in Toledo, Ohio, atFifth Third Field with theToledo Mud Hens (Triple-AAffiliate of the Detroit Tigers).The Echoes of Poland’sChildren and Teen Ensembleswere invited to perform beforethe game at the main entranceto the stadium. The Children’sEnsemble performed dancesfrom the regions of: Cieszyn,Lublin, Przepioreczka, andKrakowiak. The Teen Ensembleperformed the Kujawiak, andTrojak from Slask. Together thetwo Ensembles performed:Polka Podlaska, PolkaSpacerowa, and KrakowiaczekJeden. The dancers performedto a very enthusiastic crowd.Everyone had a great time. Thegroups were so honored andproud to represent the PRCUAand our beautiful Polish culturefor all to see.

The Echoes ofPoland Ensembles arechoreographed byPaulina Tul-Ortyl forthe past 47 years. Shehas been the onlydirector andchoreographer that theEnsemble has had. Thegroup performed atvarious festivals thissummer and willcontinue through thefall.

details is found on p. 13. Hope to see you there! September has always been a time of reflection for me. The start of a new year in my life and so inclosing, I want to share this story with you. A friend of mine took a walk with her husband one evening inJuly and a cute little pooch followed them home. There were no tags. She called the police to report the lostdog, went to animal welfare, found no chip – even posted on a website for lost pets. She walked “Destiny”around the neighborhood for four days and finally met the owner who asked Debbie if she would keep“Fifi”. Debbie was not in the market for a dog since her own passed away four years earlier. Whenever shewas asked when she would get another dog, she would say, “When a dog finds me and needs me, I willhave a dog.” She still gets goose bumps when she recaps this story. The moral of the story: God hears youand answers your prayers when you least expect it.

ST. STAN’S #718 FAMILY PICNICAUGUST 1, 2015

Westland, MI - On a perfect day with clear blue skies, eighty degrees and agentle breeze out of the north, members, family and friends came from everydirection to participate in the Family Picnic sponsored by St. Stan’s Society #718.They came from as far south as Land O’ Lakes, Florida, Pentwater in NorthernMichigan, Saginaw in the center of the State, Sterling Heights, Dearborn Heights,New Boston, Dearborn, Woodhaven, Lincoln Park, Allen Park, Taylor, Livonia,

Canton, Northville and from just aboutevery city in the Metro Detroit area.

Once again, our chairpersons Denny andTina Churchvara and their volunteers didanother outstanding job. The turnout ofmembers, family and friends exceeded 180.Manning the grills was the father and sonteam of Tim Czajka Sr. and Tim Czajka Jr.,while Ernie Pindzia insured the sweet cornwas cooked to perfection. Tina took chargeof the buffet table (with Assistant Chefs PamHamilton, Maureen O’Reilly and ColleenBrumo) while her husband, Denny, madesure the liquid refreshments were ice cold.Games of Baggo, horseshoes (coordinated byGary Hamilton) and badminton wereavailable for the children and adults alike.Fifty-fifty raffles were held with super

salesman, Edzia Kapanowski, working the crowd to insure they purchased tickets.Our park permit for the facility allowed the picnic to start at noon and go until 8:00pm, although the last of the crowd left at around 10:00 pm. Obviously, a great timewas had by all. St. Stan’s is proud to announce the recipients of its Tuition Grant Program,which awarded $300 each to Aaron Basel, Alex Czajka and Ken Germain, whoqualified by attending Catholic Grammar Schools and met the requirements. OurCollege Scholarship Program had three applicants and, after review of their gradesand essays, the Committee voted to split the award among the three individuals:Alexandra Kolberg - University of Michigan, Zachary Schultz - KetteringUniversity, and Courtney Kolberg - Arizona State University. Each received $700toward their education. Presenting the awards were Ron Gdowski, Ted Klamerusand Stan Solak. These awards were named in their honor for their many years ofdedicated service to St. Stan’s. In the past ten years, St. Stan’s has awarded over$29,000 in Tuition Grants and Scholarships, a proud accomplishment for anySociety. St. Stan’s is blessed to have chairpersons like Denny and Tina Churchvara(Picnic), Len and Eileen Nasiatka (Corporate Communion/Election Meeting), BobHojnacki (Ryder Cup Bowling and Golf), Ron and Barbara Bak (One GameBowling Knockout) now to be chaired by their daughter and son-in-law Janet andEd Ryes, Dan and Donna Gdowski (St. Stan’s Mixed Golf Outing) and Tom andJanice Dudek (Tuition Grant/Scholarship). It is remiss of me not to mention all ofSt. Stan’s volunteers but, unfortunately, there are too many to mention by name. GOLF TOURNAMENT - HUGE SUCCESS!

Hammond, IN - On Saturday, July 25, 2015, 89 Members turned out for the63rd PRCUA National Golf Tournament at Lost Marsh Golf Course inHammond, Indiana. The PRCUA would like to thank the hosting Society #413-Our Lady Queen of Poland and Chair, Rich Sobilo, for a memorable event. An early start for six teams teeing up at 6:45am didn’t stop Mary Jane &Bob Favot, Allan Salatowski and Eugene Souva from claiming 1st place in theMixed Senior’s Division with a total score of 70. Nor did it hinder theproficiency of Kevin Knight, Mike Mangin, Brian Scott and Kevin Pastrick whomopped up with a total score of 61, winning not only the Men’s Division buthaving the best overall score. There was a brief moment of apprehension as the skies clouded over in aneffort to dampen the afternoon start. Thankfully, the skies turned blue just intime for 18 teams to tee off at 1:00pm. Under hot & humid conditions as the sunbeat down on the greens, John Mardeusz, Bernard Kolano, Bob Bielenda, &Fred Forystek emerged the winners of the Men’s Senior Division with a totalscore of 65. Terry Lader, Debbie Lee and Vikki Mixon took the Ladies Divisionwith a total score of 79. The Mixed Division was triumphed by Chris Harinza,Drew Lambert, Lori Lambert and Rick Lambert with a total score of 73. The awards banquet at Steve’s Lounge in Chicago, Illinois, catered foodand drinks to a both hungry and thirsty crowd. After dinner, the winners of thedivisions were given the option to choose from a PRCUA embroidered dufflebag, collapsible cooler or blanket. Gift certificates to the Lost Marsh Pro Shopwere awarded to Patrick Kosowski for the Men’s Longest Drive, Lori Lambertfor the Women’s Longest Drive, Robert Bielenda for Closest to the Pin andAaron Surma for Longest Putt. Skills on the dance floor abounded with adiverse collection of music provided by a local DJ. The hospitality gathering on the night before the tournament was a big hitdue to the amazing efforts put forth by Elizabeth Sadus, National DirectorDistrict 9; Constance Bonin, National Director District 6; Dolores Spejewski,former PRCUA Resident Vice-President; Carol Dzieglowicz, Society #413President, Joann Kush, Society #413 Financial Secretary and Amy Keleher.These ladies really know their stuff!! In 1975, the total value of the religious assistance given to Poland by theLeague since its inception reached almost $8,500,000. In the 1970s and especially during martial law in the 1980s, Polish priestskept appealing to the Polish-American community in the United States tocontinue their support to the Church in Poland and to help Poles strugglingwith a difficult economic situation. Despite persecution by the communistregime in Poland, churches remained open, the Polish government allowedthe construction of new churches and catechetical research centers, there wasno shortage of priestly and religious vocations, and the Polish peopleremained faithful to the religion. Brief History of the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia

In September, 1939, Poland was brutally attacked by Nazi Germany andSoviet Russia. The idea for the Catholic League for Religious Assistance toPoland and Polonia was born out of the need to help the Church and people inPoland, where the cities, institutions and churches were in devastated ruins.Polish people struggled for almost six years with acts of terror and variouspersecutions, and millions lost their lives. The Holy Father, Pius XII, called for assistance, urging the world to help.Actions had been initiated almost simultaneously in several of the largestPolish communities in the United States: in Chicago - under the leadership ofPrelate Thomas Bona, in Detroit - led by Bishop Stefan Woźnicki, and in manyother cities. The Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland and Polonia (LigaKatolicka - originally named League of Religious Assistance to Poland and laterchanged to it’s current name) was founded at the Polish clergy Convention heldon May 18-19, 1943 in Buffalo, NY. According to the statute adopted at its 1stNational Convention on September 26-27, 1944 in Cleveland, OH, the League’smission was not limited to promoting the principles of the Catholic faith inAmerica, but also to offer spiritual care and financial help to Polish youth,orphans, destroyed and looted churches and Catholic institutions, and toprovide humanitarian, social and religious help in countries affected by war. Atthat time, the Catholic League already had about 300 branches, which educatedsocial workers, collected more than $100,000 and organized collections ofclothing and other items. The month of September is upon us already -with the return of the regular routine of ParishLife or, for those of us in an academic setting, anew School Year. The somewhat less hecticand more carefree days of Summer are pastand hopefully, the oppressive heat of Augustas well! Here, at SS Cyril and MethodiusSeminary, the seminarians have returned andclasses have resumed and I am happy to settleinto a regular schedule once again. Fall has always been my favorite season ofthe year and I am excited that it is here. One of my favorite Fallactivities is heading to the woods to look for and pick mushrooms.This is a skill I learned from my Father, as I was taken along everyFall from about the age of 7 until Dad was no longer able to foragearound the woods in the late 1990s. Wild mushrooms have a smelland taste that can’t be duplicated but, of course, you have to knowwhat to pick or it could be disastrous and even deadly! That remindsme of a wise saying that I heard from a Polish Bishop a decade or soago; the Bishop told me that all mushrooms are edible, some onlyonce! I am fortunate that I had my Dad as a teacher, who learnedfrom his Dziadek, who brought this skill over from Poland. I can’timagine our Wigilia without these tasty mushrooms as part of one ofthe courses on Christmas Eve. Speaking of the woods, they have a peace and tranquility of theirown and even when my search for mushrooms is not successful, I amvery happy and content to be in the woods among nature. It is soeasy to see God’s magnificent handiwork and better understand themiracle of creation in these autumn woods. For those of you whohave ever taken a walk in the woods in the Fall, know what I amspeaking of; for those who have not, it might be something to put onyour list to do, as the entire experience can be very uplifting andprayerful. Pictures and words cannot compare with being there inperson! The month of September also brings with it some importantLiturgical Feast Days. Two come to mind and are worth learningmore about. The first is September 8th, the Nativity of the BlessedVirgin Mary. This is the day on which we celebrate Mary’s birth toher parents, St. Anne and St. Joachim. She was chosen to be thevessel to bring forth the Savior of the World and she was preservedfrom the stain of Original Sin. On the Feast of the Annunciation, onMarch 25th, we celebrate that day that she confirmed God’s plan forher by her “yes” to the Angel who asked her to become the Mother ofGod. For all who have a special devotion to Our Lady, this is a greatday to attend Mass and pray that we, like Mary, may be open toGod’s will for us. The second important Feast Day is celebrated on September 14th,the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. That is the day we celebrate thefinding of the true Cross by St. Helena in the 4th Century. We renewour faith and belief that through the cross, Jesus brought redemptionto the World. If you can’t attend Mass, it might be a good thing totalk about the Feast Day with your family and explain to the youngermembers of your family the importance of the cross and Jesus’ lovefor us in dying upon the wood of the cross. It might be beneficial toalso mention that we, too, are called upon to carry the crosses of lifewith faith and courage as they come our way. I hope your month of September is going well and that you enjoythe beauty of Creation during this Fall Season. Thank you so much

for your prayers and well wishes during my recentillness. I am sure that they helped me immenselyduring this time and I am doing much better now.May God repay your kindness, Bóg Zapłać!

Harebrained Nazi experiments in Poland's wilds“Aryan” wildlife” in “arch-German” Białowieża

By Robert Strybel, Warsaw Correspondent WARSAW–The Nazis' lunatic racial theories are fairly well known. They were obsessed about creating

the ideal Aryan which they equated with the Nordic type. During the war Poles used to joke that the ideal

Aryan is tall like Göring, who was fat and squat, blonde like dark-haired Hitler and physically fit like the

club-footed Goebbels who walked with a limp.

In pursuit of his mythical German “racial purity”, Hitler set up a network of brothels where his beloved

SS officers could impregnate German maidens to produce a generation of perfect Nordics, “the master race”.

They actually sent an expedition to Asia to verify Heinrich Himmler's theory that a group of pure-blooded

Aryans had settled in Tibet. And, even though the Nazis considered Slavs to be subhuman, that did not stop

them from kidnapping and Germanizing Polish youngsters to expand the “Nordic” gene pool.

Much less is known about the extension of the Nazis' ideologically motivated racism to the animal world.

Poland's Białowieża Virgin Forest (Puszcza Białowieska) was the main focus of those efforts. According to a

documentary shown in Poland on National Geographic Channel, their prime mover was Hermann Göring –

World War I flying ace, creator of the Luftwaffe, collector of stolen artworks and avid hunter. During several

hunting trips to Poland at the invitation of Polish President Ignacy Mościcki, Göring fell in love with

Białowieża which he fancied to be a primeval “arch-German” forest. By 1941, all of Białowieża was in

German hands.

If it was so “arch-German” then it should be populated by racially pure “Aryan” wildlife. The main Nazi

project was the restoration of the aurochs (Polish: tur), a huge, long-horned bovine weighing more than a ton

which went extinct in 1627. Two Nazi German zoologists, the Heck brothers Heinz and Lutz, did succeed

through outbreeding different existing species in creating an animal that roughly resembled the aurochs,

although it was somewhat smaller.

Göring had a free hand and unlimited funds to develop Białowieża into what was called a Scientific-

Hunting Park. Some 7,000 Poles living in the area were removed, those who resisted were shot, 34 villages

were burned to the ground and reforested. German scientists took over Poland's bison-breeding project and

shipped some of the tarpans (wild ponies) Polish scientists had begun recreating to Germany where they were

touted as “pure Aryan wild horses”. Brown bears were brought to Białowieża from Romania to give it the

aura of a primeval “arch-German” wilderness.

The Nazis' plans for Białowieża were to have been the nucleus of a much larger project. The area

stretching form the Baltic down to the Black Sea was to have become a huge nature reserve studded at

intervals with newly built German settlements. The area was to be largely “cleansed” of its Slavic population,

although some Poles, Ukrainians and Russians would survive as slave laborers performing menial tasks for

the German “master race”.

But that project fortunately came to an abrupt halt when the tides of war turned against the Third Reich.

Today no traces of that grandiose if ill-conceived experiment remain. But the Soviet legacy lives on.

Białowieża, which had entirely been within the borders of pre-war Poland, is now split down the middle with

Belarus. Stalin redrew his post-war border with Poland to correspond to the demarcation line established by

his 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop deal with Adolf Hitler.

Autobiography of a New Jersey GóralPolonia's “Ivory Tower” Highlander

Reviewed by Robert Strybel My years in and out of “The Ivory Tower” is the unique autobiography of Thaddeus V. Gromada, a

unique Polish American. He probably best summed himself up in the introductory statement: “My life was

largely shaped by the fact that I am the son of Polish Highlander immigrants who arrived in America in 1927

and settled in the mid-sized industrial city of Passaic, NJ.”

Indeed, the Góral factor is the key to understanding what makes the Gromadas tick. For those unfamiliar

with Polish highlander culture, the górals are one of Poland's two most unique communities. The other are the

Kashubs of the Baltic coast at the other end of the country. The Górale inhabit the mountainous areas that rim

southern Poland and border Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Their folk culture is unique in terms of

regional attire, artifacts, architectural style, language and even cookery.

Like many PolAms, little Tadzio was raised bilingually and taught by the Felician Sisters. But since his

parents were Góral activists who had set up the Polish Tatra Highlanders Folk Dance Group in which he and

his sister Janina performed, his life was thus additionally enriched by the sights, sounds, textures and flavors

of Góralszczyzna. Polish highland folkways.

Always fascinated by world history, as a 14-year-old eighth-grader in 1943 Ted was literally blown

away by Oskar Halecki's History of Poland. A year later he heard Professor Halecki's articulate voice on the

radio condemning the betrayal of Poland by the Western Allies and the Soviets. The defense of Poland and

other captive nations would become a focus of Gromada's activities during the 45-year-long “cold war”.

Gromada eventually fulfilled his dream of earning both an MA and PhD at New York's Forhdam

University under Professor Halecki's mentorship. Thus began a life devoted to Polish and Polonian causes,

ethnic history, captive nations, Polish-Czechoslovak relations and, of course, his beloved highlander heritage.

To this day he continues to publish the monthly Tatra Eagle devoted to Góral events and affairs.

A champion of cultural pluralism, Gromada has often encouraged fellow-Polish Americans to “become

more conscious and appreciative of their rich cultural heritage that can not only enrich their personalities but

also enrich American culture.” It was Professor Halecki who introduced him to the Polish Institute of Arts

and Sciences in America (PIASA), an institution Gromada would serve in various capacities for half a

century.

Unlike many autobiographies limited to a prose narration, my years in and out of “The Ivory Tower”

reflects its author's scholarly approach by systematically listing his activities in various fields. Over 100 of

the book's 233 pages are devoted to detailed chronologies of his Gromada's publications, academic career at

New Jersey City University and contributions to PIASA. Other listings chronicle his work in ethnic studies,

Polonian affairs and community service.

This may not be an “unputdownable” adventure novel, but it does methodically chronicle many dramatic

moments in Polish-American history as seen through the eyes of Polonia's New Jersey Góral. As such, it

deserves to be included among the resources of Polish-American organizations and Saturday Schools as well

as local school libraries and college-level Central-East European and ethnic-studies departments. It also

makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the turbulent 20th-century history of Poland and Polonia.

Labor Day Labor Day is observed in the U.S. on the first Monday ofSeptember. On this day, people pay tribute to the contributions andachievements of American workers. It was originated by the Knightsof Labor and the Central Labor Union in the late 1800s. Between theyears 1840 and 1870, technological and economic progress createdthe Industrial Revolution in the U.S. The number of manufacturerswas increasing steadily, supplanting agriculture. The averageAmerican worked 7 days a week, 12 hours daily, in many cases inunsafe working conditions and earning barely enough money tomake a living. Despite the restrictions in many states, children asyoung as 5 or 6 worked in factories, mills, and mines across thecountry and earned only a fraction of the regular wages. Labor unions began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poorconditions and force employers to renegotiate hours and wages.Many of those rallies became violent and some workers were killed. On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off tomarch from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding thefirst Labor Day parade in U.S. history. The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the firstMonday in September, spread in many states across the U.S., andmany states passed legislation recognizing it. Oregon was the firststate to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. It became a federalholiday, officially celebrated by 30 states, following the deaths ofworkers by U.S. Marshals and the military during the Pullman Strikeon May 11, 1984. Labor Day also marks the end of the summer season. It is afederal holiday, all government offices and many businesses areclosed. People celebrate it with barbecues, picnics, sporting events,and fireworks or take vacations. For sport fans it is also a time whenfootball season starts.

Drugi tydzień okazał się rzeczywiście „PURA VIDA” czyli cudownym życiem. Czasspędzony nad wybrzeżem Oceanu Spokojnego należał oczywiście do najciekawszych.Urodzaj najpiękniejszych, kostarykańskich plaż w okolicach miasteczka Playa Del Coco byłbardzo obfity. Widoki z hotelu usytuowanego na skarpie jednej z oceanicznych zatok byływręcz zapierające dech w płucach, a świetna zabawa i zasłużony wypoczynek byłgwarantowany. Młodzież, z zespołu „Polonia”, wykorzystała cały tydzień bardzo ciekawiei rozmaicie, a atrakcji wciąż przybywało. Do tradycji już przeszły coroczne, zagraniczne wyjazdy zespołu Pieśni iTańca „Polonia” z Chicago, który działa przy Zjednoczeniu Polskim Rzymsko-Katolickim wAmeryce. Pod koniec lipca bieżącego roku zespół koncertował w tropikalnym krajuAmeryki Środkowej, słynnym z plantacji kawy i bananów oraz licznych wulkanów -Kostaryce. Zespół wyjechał na specjalne zaproszenie Ministerstwa Kultury Kostaryki zrekomendacji konsula generalnego Kostaryki w Chicago, Javiera Rojasa Viqueza, na FolkFestival Guanacastequidad 2015.

Podczas 2-tygodniowego pobytu Kostarykanie mieli okazję podziwiać różnorodnośćpolskiego folkloru z bogatego repertuaru grupy. Trasa koncertowa przebiegała międzykilkoma miastami rozpoczynając się w stolicy San Jose, a kończąc w mieście Nikoya. Każdykoncert był unikalny, odbywał się w różnych miejscach i dla różnej publiczności. Jednakjednym z najbardziej prestiżowych okazał się koncert w CTP de Corrolillo de Nikoya naFestiwalu De La Tortilla w Nikoya, z udziałem wielu ważnych osobistości takich jakprezydent Kostaryki, Louis Guillermo.

Tancerze zespołu „Polonia” wytrwale przygotowywali się do festiwalu w Kostaryceprzez wiele poprzedzających miesięcy. Dodatkowym utrudnieniem, podczas występów,miał się okazać tropikalny klimat, którego ekstra wilgotne powietrze i wysokie,podrównikowe temperatury były bardzo odczuwalne i dokuczliwe. Jednak myśl owypoczynku na cudownych plażach w Kostaryki była silniejsza od strachu i przeszkód.Nadprogramowe terminy treningowe i uzupełniające formy ćwiczeń, wybór repertuarutanecznego i muzycznego, czy przygotowanie kostiumów, to decyzje podejmowane przezdoświadczoną kadrę instruktorów i opiekunów grupy: Iwonę Puc, Annę Krysiński i JacklynKrysiński oraz nowego choreografa Barbarę Kuleszę, przy ścisłej konsultacji z założycielkązespołu Cecylią Rożnowską i dyrektorem muzycznym Mieczysławem Dziś. Od 1 do 3 września trwała bitwa graniczna. Polskie oddziałystawiały opór Niemcom przy granicach, lecz ze względu na przewagę militarną oddziałówIII Rzeszy, zaczęły stopniowo się wycofywać. Atakujące wojska niemieckie zaczęły sięprzesuwać szybko w głąb kraju.

O świcie 17 września 1939 roku Polska została zaatakowana od wschodu przez wojskaradzieckie, które starły się z oddziałami Korpusu Ohrony Pogranicza. Atak Armii Czerwonejzaskoczył polskie jednostki KOP, pomimo to Polacy podjęli zaciętą, choć nierówną walkę.

Wojna obronna Polski z 1939 została nazwana Kampanią wrześniową i trwała do 6października do chwili zakończenia walk regularnych oddziałów Wojska Polskiego zagresorami. W wyniku agresji III Rzeszy i ZSRR na Polskę terytorium państwowe RPzostało całkowicie okupowane i traktatem z 28 września 1939 r. podzielone między Niemcy iZSRR.
