Principal’s Message

Well, it is springtime once again, and it is heating up outside. March of 2016 may seem quite late to be talking about the 2014 – 2015

school year, but we just recently received the official declaration from the Florida Department of Education that Naples High School continues to be an “A” school! I am extremely pleased that we were able to maintain

this high standard in such an uncertain assessment period with new tests and ever-changing thresholds for achievement. First and foremost, it is our strong academic tradition that justifies our very existence and earns the “A” grade, but it is seeing our students from all aspects that really give it meaning.

As far as the current school year is concerned, we still have nearly a quarter of the year remaining. I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone to finish strong! Students sometimes have a tendency to “ease up” on their efforts as the weather gets warmer and summer approaches. Students, please don’t let this happen to you or your friends. Encourage one another to continue to give a solid effort in all aspects of your life at Naples High School. This newsletter contains many updates on recent achievements, as well as upcoming events this spring that will assist in navigating through the final action-packed weeks of the school year.

Go Eagles!

Project Graduation 2016 Project Graduation is supported by hundreds of volunteers and donors each year. Join us in keeping this “Collier County tradition alive” with your generous contribution or tangible gift for this much anticipated annual event.

Project Graduation is a district wide safe and fun graduation party for all graduating seniors in Collier County. The event is held annually at the YMCA of the Palms on Pine Ridge Road on graduation night (June 3rd) from 11 pm- 4 am. The graduates will have access to free food and drinks, rock climbing wall, laser tag, karaoke, jousting, mechanical bull ride, dancing with music provided by a DJ and so much more. Many prized drawings will also take place throughout the evening. The admission to Project Graduation is $20 and includes the Project Graduation T-Shirt which will be sold at the school once we get closer to the event date.

Parents, Project graduation needs and welcomes volunteers on the day or evening of the event. In addition, gifts and prizes for graduates to receive at Project Graduation are now being collected. Gifts valued at $25 or more may include gifts cards or any item a graduate would find fun or useful. Grand prizes items such as bicycles, iPads, computers and other “big ticket” donations are greatly appreciated.

Project Graduation is an opportunity for graduates to spend their graduation night in a safe, substance-free environment with their friends. For more information, to make a donation or to get involved in this year’s graduation celebration, please contact one of our NHS parent representatives: John Moll at 239-641-3249 email: [email protected] or Joanne Velez-Paredes at 239-250-3966 email: [email protected].

NHS Golden Apple Winners Each year the Education Foundation–Champions for Learning identifies Teachers of Distinction through their Golden Apple selection process. This involves a written application packet, a series of interviews, and several classroom observations to narrow the search and select these Teachers of Distinction from the hundreds that are eligible. This year Dr. Sarah Burd and Ms. McKenzie Morton, English teachers, and Mrs. Jenny Godley, chemistry teacher, were all selected as Collier County Teachers

of Distinction. After the field is narrowed, the Champions for Learning organization surprises five outstanding Collier County Public School teachers in their classrooms and awards them with the distinguished Golden Apple. We are proud to congratulate TWO of our outstanding Golden Eagle teachers this year as Golden Apple recipients! Mrs. Godley and Ms. Morton were each surprised with a visit on February 18th by a crowd of people bringing apples. They will be honored at this year’s Golden Apple Celebration of Teachers Dinner on April 1, 2016 at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. Congratulations!

Seeing Stars Senior Josh Black is standing next to the 12.5 Dobsonian truss telescope recently donated by Eric Uthus to Naples High School. Josh volunteers his time so students can view objects with the telescope.

Recently, students were able to look at Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter in the early morning sky with this telescope. He also has helped students with viewings at Lowdermilk Park, and Naples Pier. He used his own personal telescope when showing the full moon during

the last total lunar eclipse. Josh will be assisting with the viewing of the upcoming rare transit of Mercury on May 9th. Josh is a member of the local Everglades Astronomical Society. Many thanks Josh for your contribution to helping educate students at NHS!

Congratulations Congratulations to the four Naples High wind and percussion students named to the first ever CCPS All-County Honor Symphony Orchestra. In years past the orchestra has only been a “string only” orchestra. • Julianna Gregory- 1st Chair Bb Clarinet • Virginia Axline- 1st Chair Oboe• Zach Pettey- 1st Chair Trumpet• Brittany Martinez- Timpani

They will be joining students from all over Collier County. They will rehearse during the latter part of March, and their concert will be at Palmetto Ridge High School on April 1, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. Also, congratulations to the Concert Band on their performance, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) on their performance and Superior rating at District MPA. The SWE qualified for State Concert MPA at North Port High School on Saturday April 23, 2016.

2nd Annual Naples High School Band Coconut Run

On Sunday, 28 February at 8:00 a.m. over 500 runners took their marks and waited for the starting gun of the 2nd Annual Naples High School Band Coconut Run. The 5K race began and ended at Lowdermilk Park and was a fundraiser for the band’s upcoming trip to Washington, D.C., in April. The band will play at the National World War II Memorial and visit other

cultural and historical sites while in the nation’s capital. Many band members and their directors participated in the run, while other band members played on site at the race to keep runners moving. Assistant director Tami Fessenden, a music teacher at Lake Park Elementary, and percussion instructor Robert Ostbye ran the entire 5K distance in Golden Eagle band uniforms, including hats! The race was organized with help from Gulf Coast Runners and dozens of band booster members and parents, including Mrs. Jeannie Hautmann who hand-painted over 100 coconuts for the trophies of the event. Good luck in D. C., Golden Eagles!
