NDSS student Jordan Bainmixed auto body paintcolours perfectly to strikegold at the National SkillsCompetition in Edmontonearlier this month.

That’s the colour ofmedal the judges awardedhim for his ability to paintover scratched car doors,masking any damage.

Bain was NDSS’ lonerepresentative to the Na-tional Skills Competition,which saw high schoolstudents from acrossCanada complete varioustrade related challenges.Competing in the autopaint challenge, Bain wasgiven a damaged car doorand judged on his abilityto repaint it.

“They were judging usmore on our procedure ofhow we did it and what wedid to get it done,” said

Bain. “They also did judge us

on the final project itself,but it was more on the tech-nique.”

Part of the challengesaw him having to matchpaints he was given to cre-ate the exact same colour.

“They wanted to see ourspraying technique, theway we did our metallics,”said Bain. “They wanted tosee how we polished andwhat we did, same with themixing of the paints.”

Heading into the com-petition he had a generalidea what they’d be askinghim to do and was able topractice.

“A lot of it was aboutsafety,” said Bain. “Therewere a lot of safety infrac-tions that you could getdocked (points) on. If youwere endangering someoneelse then you would get dis-qualified instantly.”

Along with paintingBain also had to mask offparts of the door to makesure only a certain sectionof the car was painted.

To get to the nationalsBain had to first win at theLimestone District leveland then the provinciallevel in Waterloo. He creditsthe guidance of Craig Sin-dall, who teaches NDSS’

Transportation Technologyand Colour Shop Focus Pro-gram as well as on-the-joblearning he’s received atBeckwith Motors.

The gold medal wasBain’s second at the na-tional level, as last year heearned bronze.

“It should help and bepretty good on my resume,”Bain says of the medals.

His classmate, ChrisSutcliffe, also won gold atthe Limestone District leveland finished fourth atprovincials. His skills are inauto body repairs.

“I had to cut a quarter-panel and tact it on andweld it on,” said Sutcliffe.“Then we had to fix a crackin the bumper and measurethe body of the car.”

This year was his firsttime competing at theprovincial level, calling it astressful eight hours.

He too developed hisskills under the tutelage ofSindall, often repairingdamaged cars from theschool’s parking lot.

“I practiced here for acouple of weeks and gotpretty good at it,” said Sut-cliffe. “Almost every daythere’s something new thatcomes in.”

The Point, written byMercedes Morris, has morea serious tone, followingthree recently deceasedpeople who are sent back toearth to take care of someunfinished business.

This season at theSears Ontario Drama Fes-

tival, which sees highschool students performplays in front of judges, ThePoint earned two awards.

Morris was given anaward of excellence for herwriting while the cast wasgiven an award of merit fortheir ability to play charac-ters much older than them-selves.

“We’ve had so manyplaywrights emerging thisyear,” said Marriott.

“We wanted a way toshowcase some of theirwork. This is the first timewe’ve done something likethis at the end of the year.

It’s 100 per cent studentwritten and performed.”

About 50 students areinvolved with the fourplays and have been work-ing on them since February.

That hard work will beon display tonight and to-morrow with shows start-ing at 7 p.m. on bothnights. Tickets are $7 foradults and $5 for studentsand are available at theschool’s office or at thedoors on the night of theperformance.

The shows will be heldin Gym 1.
