NANOTECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES IN THE CEE REGION

1. Nanotechnology Worldwide Activities •  Over 70 countries have developed initiatives, projects and programs to prompt research in nanotechnology

since 2000.

•  Hardly any other technology has benefited from as much R&D investment globally in such a short time as nanotechnology (OECD 2009).

•  Global distribution of nanotechnology activity by country and classification (D. Maclurcan, Azojono 2005)

This is an answer to a common challenge concerning a miniaturisation of various facilities,

simultaneously keeping their properties or even improving them. The tendency is particularly

important in electronics, where the number and size of elements (their packaging density)

has a crucial impact on their functionality and price. The increase of the packaging density

can be reached by using the Ink-Jet printing technology. The technology is based on the

dosing of drops (volume of few or few tens of picoliters) ink by a capillary (diameter up to 10

micron) system. Taking into account the capillary dimensions as well as the rate and the

precision of printing, the inks have to contain a filler conducting electricity / silver

nanopowder. During the conference Amepox showed the properties of the ink containing

silver nanoparticles of 3-8 nm. To determine the optimum ink parameters, the studies of the

stability of the ink viscosity and sedimentation in long time have been carried out. The tests

of printing have been shown as well. The effect of time on the resistivity of imprinted paths

has been determined. The phenomena occurring during a heating of printings in order to

reach electrical conductivity have been discussed.

4. Challenges

•  Countries have scientific capacity, highly qualified scientists. •  The governments have identified promotion of nanotechnology as an

important factor of scientific and socio-economic development. •  Nanotechnology laboratories and centres of excellence are being created at

major scientific and technical educational establishments. •  Nanotechnology networks, programs, partnerships and joint ventures are

being put in place. •  A number of international and European projects.

BUT….  •  It is difficult to embrace the overall picture of R&D in nanotechnology taking

place in the CEE region •  Not every country has specific coordinated programmes for nanotechnology

or has only recently established such programmes. •  Despite the political will, funding has not yet reached its peak. •  Countries are at a different stage of “nanotechnology development”.

Page 25: NANOTECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES IN THE CEE REGION Presentation... · NANOTECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES IN THE CEE ... "nanotechnologies aimed at controlling material structure ... materials science

NANOTECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES IN THE CEE REGION

•  The need to develop solid infrastructures, to promote coordination of innovation projects, to strengthen the capacity, to create funding opportunities, to equip laboratories, share information, and to develop a dialog between stakeholders including manufacturers, private sector, competent authorities, researchers and civil society.

•  The need for regional cooperation. •  Balancing innovation and protection. •  Regulation and precautionary approach!
