PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT
Excellent Effort
I congratulated our Year 12’s on an excellent effort in their block exams last week. It is very evident that the majority of
students are working diligently. Academic coaches will be working with students in Year 11 and 12 to ensure their high
standards are maintained.
Programs on Offer
It was very pleasing to meet many parents of our indigenous students last week. Mrs Wager and Mrs Freeman outlined
the many programs on offer for students. It was particular pleasing to hear from the University Of Southern Queensland
(USQ) who are keen to work with the school in developing partnerships.
Excursions
We received positive reports again from two excursions. The Drama students went to La Boite Theatre and the Year 10
Business students went to Yandina Ginger Factory. All students were very polite and proved again to be great
ambassadors for Nanango.
Mobile Free School / Manners
I did two quick reminders to students on parade. One was about our school being a mobile free school. I ask for parents
to support the school with this. I also mentioned the importance of manners, whether this be in the tuckshop, office or in
class to teachers or teacher aides. The saying “manners go a long way” is always applicable at Nanango State High
School.
Lions Youth of the Year
Well done to our school leaders who competed in the Lions Youth of the Year public speaking contest. The students who
participated were Chloe Chudleigh, Kirsten O’Connor, Taylah Kidman, Kayla Mathews and James Packer. They had to
undergo an interview and then 2x 2 minute impromptu speeches and a 5 minute prepared speech. They were once again
well prepared by Mrs Jarrett. Chloe Chudleigh was the overall winner and Taylah Kidman was awarded speaker of the
night.

PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT (continued)
Community Production
I received information from Mr Fraser that a number of our students are performing in the local theatre company
performance of All My Love Paul. It is great that our students are engaged in the community production. The students
are Tia Robinson, Olivia Maynard, Zoe Holloway and Tyler Maguire. These shows are on the 27th & 28th March and 3rd
& 4th April.
Investing for Success
The school receives $381,019 in funding called Investing for Success (I4S). The vast majority of this money goes
towards funding many school projects and HR requirements. The bulk of this money goes towards 2 extra teachers to
help keep junior class numbers down and 2 teacher aides to help with our literacy/numeracy intervention programs.

YEAR 8
The year 8 cohort has been working at showing a little more appreciation during their time at school. During CEALS the
Year 8 students were asked to appreciate some of the work that teachers and school staff do for them on a daily basis.
Teachers can often get caught up with the negative things that happen at school and it was nice for the students to
acknowledge the very important job they do. Teachers are positive role models for these students and make a
significant impact on the future of those that attend our school. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful staff
body at Nanango and it’s important to acknowledge that the students are thankful for the following. Well done to both
the students and the staff.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL AWARD
In week three, I presented the Bridge Program to the
year 7 and 8 students at year level parade. Quite a few
students have collected an application from Student
Services and signed up for the program already, which
gives the students an idea of what to expect in Bronze.
The Bridge program runs only in Queensland and has two
levels – Bridge 1 and Bridge 2, with Bridge 2 being double
the hours of the Bridge 1 level.
The Duke Edinburgh’s International Award is an internationally recognized program for young people, building their
skills to equip them for life and work. Each Award is broken into four sections: skill, physical, service and adventurous
journey. The participant chooses the activities for each section and sets up the award to reflect their interests. This
makes it a very personal program, offering young people a structure to fulfill their passions and ambitions in a way that
suits them. Many students are already doing activities that can be used to complete the award. Participants have the
freedom to progress through The Duke of Ed according to their personal needs and abilities and the individual sets the
benchmark – there is no such thing as fail.
Many areas of the award can be completed at school with such programs as ‘The Brekky Club’, and ‘The Walking Club’,
any number of sports, and the Accelerated Reader program to name a few.
Once the Bridge Award is completed, the participant will receive an award and badge at Awards Night and a certificate
for their resume.

FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICER
Anxiety
When you were a teenager, it was not so common to encounter someone who was anxious to the point where it
prevented them doing what they really wanted to be doing.
Our present fast paced life with all its intrusions into our personal space has made the issue of anxiety a matter of real
concern for our young people.
Karen Young is an expert on anxiety and has helped countless young people across Australia. She kindly shares her
insights on her website and has information based on the latest developments in neuroscience.
