From Our Presidents’ Pens It was good to see everyone at the January meeting, and to see all the quilts in the Show and Share. Our special thanks go to Arline Warwick for her wonderful donation of 17 quilts to Quilts of Comfort. Lillian Dalton has sent a card of thanks on behalf of the Guild. Our thoughts and prayers are with Arline in her illness. As you know, we voted on two motions at the January guild meeting. Both motions were carried so, from now on, we will be holding paper ballots for issues over $1000. Issues & items between $200 and $1000 will be voted on by a show of hands, as before. In addition, matters of a significant nature (as judged by the president(s) will be presented in writing as a notice of motion and dealt with by the executive and the guild. Even though it’s the shortest month of the year, I always find February one of the hardest to deal with. It seems as if winter will never end. So I am happy that there are plenty of guild activities which are going to be so much fun and keep our spirits up till we see the first signs of spring. There are a number of workshops to teach us some wonderful techniques, and give us the excuse to play. The ‘Tricks of the Trade’ session promises to be very educational. I know I learned a lot at last year’s meeting. Many thanks to the instructors for sharing their time and expertise! A very special thank you goes to the ladies who stayed after the tea and helped with the clean up – it was sew much appreciated. Sign-ups for the open workshops surged after the tea which we can only attribute to our new members feeling more comfortable with taking a workshop. The workshop registration form is on page 7. Anyone who would like to register for the upcoming workshops is asked to get in touch with Barb Root via email: rootco@shaw .ca phone: 245-3320 or in person at the’Workshop Registration’ table at any Guild meeting. These classes are open to any member of our guild at a nominal price. There is no prerequisite and no skills required. Taking classes is a wonderful way to meet new friends AND to learn a new ‘trick of the trade.’ We remind all members - if you are interested in a workshop that is presently full, please put your name on the waitlist, we get lots of cancellations. We are pleased to tell you that all of our February workshops feature our own talented members. Barb Root has compiled lists of workshop participants (page 2). 10th Annual Quilt Bee for Haven HouseOur 2008 Quilting Bee was a resounding success. We had over 60 guild members working hard, as they enjoyed the companyof fellow guild members. Please remember to bring your completed quilts from the Quilt Bee to the meeting on February20th. Haven House representatives will be at the meeting to receive our quilts.

Guild members again made amazing dishes for our potluck luncheon. We would like to thank the Quilt Bee Committee, CathyWelte, Lillian Charron and Audrey Hale for all their hard work organizing this important event. Grateful thanks goes to SandyDobson and Leslie Millward who have very generously agreed to chair the quilt bee in 2009. Please plan to attend and givethem your support. Thank you to all the quilters, ironers, dish washers, and again the ladies who helped to clean up after the“Bee”. Somehow us old birds do not have the same energy to clean up that we had years ago – so thanks ladies for pitching inwhen the events are over. Could it be that we ate too much at lunchtime and needed our afternoon nap? Hmmmmmmmmmm?

Can I take it with me?Personally, I think it is very appropriate to bewrapped in your stash and quilts, like a mummy, before your cremation or burial. That way, wecan take it with us.

However, our sewing machines, patterns, sewing options and the zillion other things wepossess in our sewing havens should be givenconsideration, prior to our mummification, asto whom we would like to bequeath them to.

We can put our ‘sewing rooms’ in our Will orprobably the best way, is leave writteninstructions with our executor, separate to ourWill, as to whom gets what. That way we caneasily update our instructions annually to keepup with our acquisitions.

I think it is really important to give this somethought and make sure our stash, quilts andsewing goodies will be passed on to those whotruly appreciate their value. Remember ourexecutors probably have only a slight idea ofthe value of our treasures!!

May we live long and healthy lives to enjoy everyquilt and piece of fabric and pass along our loveof this hobby to others who cherish and shareour obsession. Gail LambourneEditor’s note: You might consider bequeathingyour quilting items to our Guild, or the MissingWomen’s Legacy Society if you don’t have anindividual in mind.

Thank you to my adopted Grandmother Eimear for taking care of the

guild while my Nana Avril stayed with Mommy and me. I like my family.

My Nana got up in the night with Mommy and me and she burped me

and sent Mommy back to bed. I like these quiet times with Nana. She

made Mommy a rag quilt to keep us warm during the night feedings.

Nana went home to Duncan and I miss her but I hope she will make

me another quilt. Will you make sure she does my quilt right away? And

I look good in pink. Love Jillian Avalee Kathleen Hoiland

Minutes of January 16, 2008 General MeetingMeeting was called to order at 1:02 pm by Co-president Eimear Keane. (Avril was in Calgary with her new grandaughter Jillian)

Treasurer: Dalle Proft gave her final report before handing the treasurers position over to Audrey Hale. The Guild has abalance of $27,717.28 in our ING account and a balance of $8,430.17 in our Coastal Community Credit Union account.

Secretary: Thank you cards and letters were received for donations made by the Comfort Quilt Society and the Placematscommittee. A request for a quilted donation was read and put out to the membership at large. Betty Beck has volunteered todonate an item and deal with this request personally.

Library: Linda noted that Val Ursalak and Paulette Cornish were featured in the latest Canadian Quilter magazine. There wereprizes for the challenge of making a quilt from one of the books/magazines checked out of the library in November.

Program: There are spaces available in some of the upcoming classes. Class and supply lists are available. A reminder to signup for the Tricks of the Trade program in February.

Raffles: Please sign the winners’ sheet when choosing a raffle prize, as we must keep records for auditing purposes.

Hospitality: Laura Morrisey introduced and welcomed new members and visitors today.

Ongoing Business: Eimear brought to the floor the motions made and passed unanimously at the December 12, 2007 executivemeeting, and subsequently published in the newsletter for the perusal of the membership. A vote, by a show of hands wastaken, counted and duly recorded by Eimear. A second vote on these motions was taken at the evening meeting.

Voting Results: The first motion concerning financial expenditures over $1000.00 was 118 in favour, 3 against, 2 abstentions.Passed. The second motion concerning significant matters being presented to the executive as a Notice of Motion, was passedunanimously.

As there was no further business to be considered, the floor was opened to the Show and Share program. Val Ansell led off theshow with a display of the generous donation of seventeen wonderful quilts lovingly made and donated by one of our honourarymembers, Arline Warwick. The guild thanks her from the bottom of our hearts and she is in our thoughts and prayers. Abeautiful display of the talent and industriousness of our members followed. Thank you everyone for sharing! Cindy Scraba,a guild member, was present and took photographs that are available on line for viewing (see page 1) Lillian Dalton, Secretary
