Dashrath Manjhi was born in dalit family. He worked at Dhanbad's coal mines. His wife Kalguni devi died after on accident due to not rece iving immediate medical care , as there was no nearby hospitals. Thinking that no one else should suffer this fate, he resolved to build the road to make his village more accessible. He decided to carve a path through the Geholour hills. So that his village could have easier access to medical attention . He carved a path 11 Om. long. 7.7 m dee in places and 9.1 m wide to form a road th rough the rocks with the help of only a har,:imer and chisel. He completed the work in 22 years. ( 1960 - 1982). It reduced the distance between his area to Gaya town from 55 km to 15 km and 30km to 3km. He became popularly known as the mountain man. A stamp was released in his honour in 2016.
