Namibia, Okavango and Victoria Falls Birding Safari 2 19 November 2013 By Steve Braine Firstly, thanks to Jim Preston for the great pictures, which compliment the report immensely. All in all we had a very successful trip, seeing all of the big five, plus some other unusual sightings such as aardwolf, honey badger, and a beautiful female leopard in Etosha. We also had superb views of sable antelope in Mahango National Park and the Kwando area. Surprisingly for this time of year, the migrants had not arrived in numbers yet, and the country was in the grip of a bad drought. This made birding rather difficult, as no birds were responding to playback. However, we were fortunate to see three of the nightjars, but very few cuckoos. We managed to clean up on all the babblers and bee-eaters and also had luck with a perched Bat Hawk, good views of Lesser Black-backed Gull (a vagrant in southern Africa), and a few other interesting birds. We managed to see most of the specials and had spectacular views of Southern Carmine Bee-eaters at two separate colonies. We travelled a total of 4360 km (including game drives in the parks) and saw a total of 409 avian species. We also recorded 54 different mammals, including two species of fruit bat. The group all seemed to get on well, and, besides a little dust and having to drag a trailer behind us, the birding and game viewing was great. Dayne, my son, looked after the group for the first day and a half and managed to get all the coastal specials for all, even though this meant travelling back and forth from the dune belt because of flight hitches, delays, and subsequent transfers from Windhoek. Day 1. Birding around Walvis Bay From the airport Dayne took part of the group to the Rooibank area on the banks of the Kuiseb riverbed. After a short walk in the riverbed they had sightings of Cape Sparrow, Black-chested Prinia, the western race of Southern Fiscal with a snow-white supercilium, Tractrac and Familiar Chats, Dusky Sunbird, and good views of Black-chested Snake Eagle.

Firstly, thanks to Jim Preston for the great pictures, which compliment the report immensely.

Dune Lark

The Dune Lark seen by some of the group on the first day was searched for again, and eventually all had good views of the bird; later on good views were also obtained of Gray’s Lark on the gravel plains. Other species seen at the Swakopmund Saltworks and the evaporation pans around Walvis Bay included both Greater and Lesser Flamingos in the thousands, Swift, Sandwich, Common, Caspian, and Damara Terns, Hartlaub’s and Kelp Gulls, Bar-tailed Godwit, Pied Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Grey Heron, Little Egret, White-fronted, Chestnut-banded, Common Ringed, and Grey Plovers, and also great numbers of Curlew Sandpiper, Little Stint, Common Greenshank, Ruff, and the highlight of the day, 19 Red-necked Phalaropes.

Day 2. Optional catamaran cruise and birding around Walvis Bay The optional catamaran cruise (done by most of the party) the following morning proved to be very productive, with Great White Pelican, Cape Gannet, White-breasted, Cape, and Crowned Cormorants, large flocks of ‘Comic’ Terns (Common or Arctic), as well as many Sandwich, Greater Crested, and Caspian Terns. The same afternoon the group spent its time catching up with birds missed the previous day. Black-necked Grebe and Marsh Sandpiper were added to the list, and near Rooibank Laughing and Namaqua Doves.

Day 3. Swakopmund to Damaraland, birding on the way Day three had Dayne deliver the folks and vehicle in Swakopmund. From here we left for the Spitzkoppe area to look for the elusive Herero Chat. After getting the trailer for all the luggage we set off at nine for Huab Lodge in Damaraland, where we arrived at 19:00h after a good day’s birding. Just before the Spitzkoppe we encountered a pair of Tawny Eagle, Rüppell’s Korhaan, and several Sabota Larks. After searching for Karoo Long-billed Lark we eventually found one shading under a bush about 50 meters off the road; this bird allowed us very close-up views. We then spotted the first of several Karoo Chats and then drove further on to the Spitzkoppe area. Fortunately we did not have to wait long before we managed to get good scope views of a pair of Herero Chat. At the same locality we found Yellow-bellied Eremomela and Pale Chanting Goshawk. We then proceeded towards Uis, where we refuelled. We had our packed lunches en route and caught up with Mountain Wheatear, Dusky Sunbird, Chat Flycatcher, Marico Flycatcher, Helmeted Guineafowl, Fork-tailed Drongo, Crimson-

breasted Shrike, and Benguela Long-billed Lark. At a storage dam along the way we saw Red-billed and Cape Teals, Egyptian Goose, South African Shelduck, Little Grebe, Blacksmith Lapwing, Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, and Red-crested Korhaan. The wind picked up, and after having a good look at a group of Bare-cheeked Babbler we moved on to Huab.

Olive Bee-eater Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl

Day 4. Birding around Huab Lodge The following morning we went for an early morning walk with Jan, the proprietor, and had excellent views of Olive Bee-eater. Later around the lodge we had good Bare-cheeked Babbler, Southern Grey-headed Sparrow, Great Sparrow, Pale-winged Starling, Red-headed Finch, Black-throated Canary, African Hoopoe, Grey Go-away-bird, and a brief Rüppell’s Parrot. The afternoon game/bird drive delivered some of the first game sightings, including gemsbok, common duiker, greater kudu, steenbok, and springbok. We also had good views of Violet Wood Hoopoe and African Hoopoe, as well as Damara Red-billed Hornbill, African Grey Hornbill, Helmeted Guineafowl, Red-billed Spurfowl, better Rüppell’s Parrot, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Black-backed Puffback, African Hawk-Eagle, African Palm Swift, Rock Martin, Short-toed Rock Thrush, and Monteiro’s Hornbill. Day 5. Damaraland to the Kunene River, birding on the way The following morning during an early morning walk we managed to find the elusive Rockrunner, and we were all treated to good views of the bird. We then completed a hearty breakfast and left the lovely Huab Lodge for Kunene River Lodge. Birds we encountered en route were Brown Snake Eagle, Southern Grey-headed Sparrow, White-browed Sparrow-Weaver, Steppe Buzzard, more Monteiro’s Hornbill, Yellow-bellied Eremomela, and Kalahari Scrub Robin. At lunch along the way we had good views of Cape Penduline Tit, Ashy Tit, and Brubru. On arrival at the lodge we saw Bare-cheeked Babbler and enjoyed the antics of the vervet monkeys. From the deck we watched Goliath Heron, Black Crake, Reed Cormorant, Pied Kingfisher, Holub’s Golden Weaver, and various egrets. Day 6. Birding along the Kunene River

The afternoon boat ride was tremendous with some spectacular birds, including a perched Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, a perched Bat Hawk at dusk, African Pied Wagtail, Bearded Woodpecker, Square-tailed Nightjar, and close White-backed Night Heron. On the banks we had klipspringer, greater kudu, and black-faced impala.

Day 7. Kunene River to Etosha National Park On day seven we travelled via Opuwo and backtracked to enter the western gate, Galton Gate, of Etosha National Park. We travelled via Renostervlei, where we had views of the first Vultures of the trip, both Lappet-faced and White-backed. Here we also saw Crowned Lapwing, Chat Flycatcher, a couple of Bateleurs, and Grey-backed Sparrow-Lark. In the park we also had our first two African elephants, giraffe, and both Hartmann’s mountain and plains zebra. We then checked in at the Dolomite Lodge and did a short walk in the area. Here we had brief views of Cinnamon- breasted and Lark-like Buntings, White-throated Canary, Brubru, and Carp’s Tit.

Day 8. Etosha National Park The following morning early we searched for the elusive Hartlaub’s Spurfowl without success, but just before departing two confiding males were spotted just below the reception area! Other species here were Rock Martin, Greater Striped Swallows, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Carp’s Tit, Green-winged Pytilia, Marico Sunbird, and White-tailed Shrike.

Northern Black Korhaan Kori Bustard

En-route to Okaukuejo we encountered our first (of many) Kori Bustard, Northern Black Korhaan, Desert Cisticola, and many Eurasian Bee-eaters. At the Duineveld waterhole we enjoyed huge numbers of Burchell’s Sandgrouse coming in to drink; amongst them were also a handful of Namaqua Sandgrouse. Along the way we also saw many springbok, gemsbok, hartebeest, blue wildebeest, southern giraffe, black-faced impala, and greater kudu. We stopped at several waterholes along the way and saw a couple of big bull elephants, and eventually at m’Bari hundreds of animals around the waterhole. On arriving closer to the waterhole the reason for all the animals became apparent: lying at the edge of the water were a coalition of three huge male lions. The sheer numbers of animals here was truly an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Rufous-eared Warbler Burchell’s Sandgrouse

We arrived at Okaukuejo and booked into our accommodation, and then left on an afternoon drive to the Gemsbokvlakte waterhole. En route there were more elephants, and then at the turnoff we managed to call in the diminutive but spectacular Rufous-eared Warbler. Further along the road we saw many Larks: Spike-heeled, Sabota, Stark’s, Red-capped, and eventually good views of Pink-billed, as well as Grey-backed Sparrow-Lark. Northern Black Korhaan was common here, and we also had good views of Burchell’s Courser and Kori Bustard. After dinner we visited the waterhole, and several black rhinos and several lions were seen. Here we also enjoyed Rufous-cheeked Nightjar, two Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls, and literally

hundreds of Double-banded Sandgrouse after sunset. In the camp grounds we saw Groundscraper Thrush, African Cuckoo, Crimson-breasted Shrike, and many Burchell’s Starlings.

Day 9. Etosha National Park Before leaving Okaukuejo for Namutoni we once again observed Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl at the waterhole, and en route to Halali notched up Greater Striped Swallow, Common Swift, Tawny Eagle, and at Rietfontein waterhole African Jacana, Three-banded Plover, Red-billed and Cape Teals, a few Egyptian Goose, and many animals. Here we also had good views of Kittlitz’s Plover, African Pipit, and Wood and Common Sandpipers.

African Scops Owl

On arrival at Halali we searched for owls and only managed to find a single African Scops Owl with wings dropped in the heat of the day, but it showed well! We also had a pair of Little Sparrowhawk on a nest, White-crowned Shrike, and Damara Red-billed Hornbill. At the waterhole we had fine views of a single melanistic Gabar Goshawk, Lark-like Bunting, Violet-eared Waxbill, and Emerald-spotted Wood Dove. During the afternoon drive, Goas waterhole gave us good views of some black-faced impala and giraffe, as well as a sleeping spotted hyena a meter off the road! The birds here included Ruff, Little Stint, Three-banded Plover, Tawny Eagle, Martial Eagle, Red-billed and Cape Teals, Little Grebe, Egyptian Goose, Wood Sandpiper, and Cinnamon-breasted Bunting. As a special treat before we reached Namutoni we watched a lonely Secretarybird hunting. We then stopped at Namutoni to refuel. While there we saw a couple of banded mongooses and also managed to call up Burnt-necked Eremomela. In the gardens were African Cuckoo, Burchell’s Starling, Blue Waxbill, and Red-billed Quelea. Travelling the dik-dik drive loop, we had good views of Damara dik-dik and other antelopes, and on the Namutoni waterhole we saw many Red-billed and Cape Teals as well as a single male Southern Pochard, several Kittlitz’s Plovers, many Grey Go-away-birds, and a Tawny Eagle. After arriving at Mokuti Lodge for the night, just outside of the park, a short walk in the garden delivered good views of Black-faced Babbler, Golden-tailed Woodpecker, African Paradise Flycatcher, and Southern Masked Weaver.

Day 10. Etosha National Park to Rundu The following morning after breakfast we left via Tsumeb and Grootfontein to Hakusembe River Lodge near Rundu, where we arrived early enough to do a little birding. We found Coppery-tailed and Senegal Coucals, Woodland Kingfisher, Magpie Shrike, Kurrichane Thrush, and Purple-banded Sunbird for the night. En route we had stopped near Grootfontein and called up Pearl-spotted Owlet and Acacia Pied Barbet. Further along, south of Rundu, we called in Green-capped Eremomela, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, distant Yellow-fronted Canary, and African Yellow White-eye. The bird of the day was a young Souza’s Shrike! We also found Golden-breasted Bunting, good Black-headed Oriole, Lilac-breasted Roller, Pale Flycatcher, Southern Black Flycatcher, and at Roy’s Camp more Black-faced Babbler, Emerald-spotted Wood Dove, Black Cuckoo, and Lesser Honeyguide.

Lilac-breasted Roller

Day 11. Rundu to the Kavango River The following morning we were off to Ndhovu Safari Lodge on the western bank of the Kavango River, as the Okavango is called in Namibia. En route we stopped at the Rundu Sewage Works and added the following to our ever growing list: Purple Roller, Red-billed Firefinch, Striated Heron, Western Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Knob-billed Duck, Hottentot Teal, Common Moorhen, Red-knobbed Coot, Black-necked and Little Grebes, Violet-backed Starling, African Spoonbill, African Sacred Ibis, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper, Black winged Stilt, Yellow-billed Kite, Blue-cheeked and Little Bee-eaters, and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. A glimpse at a passing African Hobby on leaving Rundu unfortunately was not seen by all, even though we jumped out of the vehicle to try and get a look at this bird. Along the way to Ndhovu we stopped a number of times and caught up with Yellow-fronted Canary, African Yellow White-eye, and at a leaking tap at a quarantine camp we had good views of Sharp-tailed Starling, Green-capped Eremomela (which we called in, this being the first bird to react to playback!), and also Golden-breasted Bunting, Red-headed Weaver, and Southern Grey-headed Sparrow.

Page 8: Namibia, Okavango and Victoria Falls Birding Safari · Namibia, Okavango and Victoria Falls Birding Safari 2 – 19 November 2013 By Steve Braine Firstly, thanks to Jim Preston for

Cut-throat Finch Black-collard Barbet

On arrival at Ndhovu we had good views of Cut-throat Finch, Black-collared Barbet, Woodland Kingfisher, and Greater Blue-eared Starling. Later at the deck we had Giant Kingfisher, African Openbill, Yellow-billed Stork, large numbers of Knob-billed Duck and Spur-winged Goose, and also wonderful African Skimmer, Water Thick-knee, Black Crake, African Wood Owl, and Golden-tailed Woodpecker. On a walk in the area in the late afternoon we had good views of Purple-banded and Marico Sunbirds, which we called in, and Black-crowned Night Heron. Later we called in Fiery-necked and Square-tailed Nightjars. Many hippopotamuses kept us all occupied with their yawns and grunts right in front of the lodge, and we also had some brief sightings of spot-necked otter. Several Meyer’s Parrot flew and called all around the lodge and were also seen flying across the river, where common impala, greater kudu, and bushbuck as well as warthog were seen grazing.

Juvenile African Harrier-Hawk

Day 12. Birding Mahango National Park, transfer to Xaro Lodge in Botswana The following morning we travelled to the woodland near Mahango National Park, from there via the park to the Botswana border, and then on to Xaro Lodge, situated on an island in the Okavango and sister lodge of the popular Drotsky’s Cabins, where we were to spend the next two nights. The picture of the juvenile African Harrier-Hawk was taken here; the bird was observed trying to rip out an incubating African Grey Hornbill from the nest hole! The woodland produced another Sharp-tailed Starling, Purple Roller, Southern Black Tit,

Southern Black Flycatcher, Red-headed Weaver, Grey-headed Kingfisher, and Dark Chanting Goshawk. Unfortunately, there was not a sound to be heard from the now elusive Rufous-bellied Tit. In the park we had our first sightings of Wattled Crane. Here we also had good views of sable antelope, a single tsessebe, large herds of African buffalo, a few elephants, common reedbuck, red lechwe, common warthog, and hippopotamus. Other birds seen at Mahango were African Sacred Ibis, African Spoonbill, Spur-winged Goose, Long-toed Lapwing in the distance, Bateleur, African Fish Eagle, and Lesser Kestrel. On leaving the park we had distant views of a herd of roan antelope. Upon arrival at Drotsky’s for our boat transfer to Xaro we were rewarded with Malachite Kingfisher, Chirping Cisticola, Greater Swamp Warbler, and Little, Blue-cheeked, White-fronted and Southern Carmine Bee-eaters. Later on the boat trip we saw a good number of African Skimmer, some of them with chicks, African Openbill, African Marsh Harrier, Brown-throated Martin, Wire-tailed and Lesser Striped Swallows, Common Swift, and nice African Fish Eagle and Giant Kingfisher.

Day 13. Birding the Okavango Panhandle Early the next morning before breakfast we did a short walk in the lodge vicinity and had African Barred Owlet, Grey Tit-Flycatcher, Retz’s Helmetshrike, African Green Pigeon, Black Cuckooshrike, Crested Francolin , Rattling Cisticola, and Yellow-breasted Apalis.

Southern Carmine Bee-eater

The morning boat trip to a Southern Carmine Bee-eater colony was quite spectacular, a sight all will not forget in a hurry!!! Then we took a walk to look for Pel’s Fishing Owl, which we flushed; it then perched again for all to see. During this time a Narina Trogon was heard calling in the distance; a short walk and playback brought the bird in for all to see, albeit a bit distant. Very good views of White-backed Night Heron were obtained, but this species had been seen previously on the Kunene River. On the sand banks we were very fortunate to see a group of 16 Slaty Egrets and another two further along, also two Black Herons, many African Skimmers, African Marsh Harrier, and a variety of other birds seen previously. What was new was a Hadada Ibis sitting on its nest, Great Egret, Intermediate, Little, and Western Cattle Egrets, excellent Long-toed Lapwing, and a

single Woolly-necked Stork. The afternoon boat trip had us notch up African Pygmy Goose, Lesser Swamp Warbler, African Swamphen, Common Moorhen, and Fan-tailed Widowbird.

Day 14. Birding around Xaro Lodge, transfer to Mazambala Island Lodge The morning before departure we had another short walk so that we could all get a look at the African Barred Owlet (missed by some the previous morning) as well as superb views of Greater Honeyguide and Crested Barbet. We then packed up and were taken by boat to our vehicle at Drotsky’s. Just before departing we managed good views of Orange-breasted Bushshrike, and en route to the border also of Wahlberg’s Eagle on a nest, nice perched Black-chested Snake Eagle, Lilac-breasted Roller, Magpie Shrike, Red-backed Shrike, and various starlings.

Pel’s Fishing Owl African Pygmy Goose

From Drotsky’s we travelled back to Namibia and drove on to Mazambala Island Lodge on the Kwando River. Along the way we stopped and searched for various birds, catching up again with Tinkling Cisticola (not seen by all on the last sighting). We also enjoyed many Willow Warblers and Black-headed Oriole. On arrival at Mazambala close-up views of Copper, Collared, and Purple-banded Sunbirds were obtained, as well as of several Shelley’s Sunbirds.

Day 15. Birding around Mazambala Island Lodge Around the pool we had great sightings of Meyer’s Parrot and Thick-billed Weaver, and on the breakfast server we saw close-up Southern Brown-throated Weaver. The gardens also produced several African Paradise Flycatcher, Chinspot Batis, Diederik Cuckoo, and Chirping Cisticola. Brown Firefinch showed well in the garden, and we also had a few other species previously seen. The morning game drive delivered good game viewing, and we had superb views of a pair of Racket-tailed Roller, Saddle-billed Stork, Rufous-bellied Heron, and three amazing White-headed Vultures.

Schalow’s Turaco

Day 16. Transfer to Zambia From Mazambala we travelled to Shackleton’s Lodge in Mwandi, Zambia. While in Katima Mulilo we spent some time in Katy Sharpe’s garden, where we had wonderful views of Schalow’s Turaco and also added Bronze Manikin and Bearded Scrub Robin to the list.

Black-cheeked Lovebird

Day 17. Black-cheeked Lovebird and transfer to Livingstone, Victoria Falls We left early the next morning to look for Black-cheeked Lovebird, which we found after a three-hour journey. The birds showed well, as they were feeding on ripening wild figs and allowed a close approach. On the way to the lovebirds the rear vehicle had good views of Southern Ground Hornbill, Lizard Buzzard, Great Spotted Cuckoo, and Brown-crowned Tchagra. After our return from the lovebird adventure, we packed up at Shackleton’s after a short walk around the grounds, enjoying Brown-hooded Kingfisher, African Black Flycatcher, White-browed Scrub Robin, Tropical Boubou, Green-winged Pytilia, White-browed Coucal, African Cuckoo, Little Sparrowhawk, various bee-eaters, and Yellow-breasted Apalis. We then travelled on to Livingstone. En-route we encountered Steppe Buzzard, Steppe Eagle, White-rumped Swift, Common Swift, and repeated Yellow-billed Kite. We arrived at Maramba River Lodge, and after checking in we visited the magnificent Victoria Falls, certainly an experience that will remain a lasting memory for all. Here Red-

winged Starling and African Black Swift were seen. Afterwards we did a walk around the lodge gardens, where we found Grey-headed Bushshrike and Collared Palm Thrush.

Collard Palm Thrush

Day 18. Departure The following morning before we departed we went for a walk and had basically the same species as on the previous day, because only a few participants were on the walk yesterday and the others had not seen the birds. Here a second Little Bittern juvenile was spotted and seen by all. On a last quick walk around the lodge gardens near the falls we saw several Jacobin Cuckoos and breeding Village Weavers, as well as Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Purple Heron, and Striated Heron. Two members of our group had already caught their shuttle to Botswana, and one stayed on for another few days. The remaining guests were then driven to the airport, where they were to catch a flight to Johannesburg and then onwards to their destinations.
