Name: Period: Due Date: Fahrenheit 451 Final Project & Analysis “Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there. It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime.” Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 What is it? After reading Fahrenheit 451, if we do nothing, then what is the point? Ray Bradbury is begging us to wake up, to live our lives differently, to be more alive. So rather than simply writing a paper after reading this book, you are going to apply the themes we discussed throughout the book to the real world via a project. You will identify a passage/quotation that you think is especially important or telling from F451 and The Lorax. With these identified passages in mind, plan, execute, and polish a piece of creative writing or creative art that thoughtfully engages and represents the themes, ideas, and/or referenced works of Fahrenheit 451 and connects them to something in the world around you and/or your life. You can do the project alone or in a group (no more than 3 people). If you work in a group the quality and quantity should reflect the number of people who worked on it. Some options for your project are: o Creative writing: story, poem(s), play/film script, comic art o Visual art: drawing, comic art, painting, sculpture, collage, digital art, word art o Other: social experiment, model, diorama, music, interpretive dance, suggest something What will you be assessed on? 1. Ability to analyze theme (1 page reflection): Choose a quote from F451 and an example from the Lorax and explain how it relates to the overall theme of the text and the project. What does the text assert about a topic? 2. Quality of Presentation: Present your project in 2-3 minutes with poise and clarity i.e. eye contact, projected voice, well organized 3. Ability to create a quality product: Product’s quality shows legitimate effort and time put into it. 4. Creativity: Product is original, innovative, shows obvious depth of thought. You couldn’t have thought of this project the night before.
