Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born in England in 1832. He had many talents, including being a mathematician and a photographer. But he is best known as the author of the popular children’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
When Carroll was very young, he suffered a fever which caused him to be deaf in one ear. He also suffered from a bad stammer, which made it difficult for him to speak with confidence.
Carroll started writing poems and stories from a young age, first for the family magazine, and then for national newspapers and magazines. His famous book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1865. Due to the success of the book, Carroll published a sequel in 1871 - Through the Looking Glass And What Alice Found. By the time of Carroll’s death in 1898, the Alice series had become the most popular children’s book in England.
