As a creative person in a creative job in a creative industry, Id like to take a moment to remember Steve Jobs. The founder of Apple, Jobs encouraged not only employees of his company to think differently, he also encouraged the world at large to think differently. He elevated our expectations for personal computers, music, communications, and even animation. Even if you arent an Apple fanatic (like I am), you probably still are bene ting from Jobs genius. Because not only did he push his own company to take risks and push boundaries, he also pushed his competitors to do the same.
When Apple launched its Think Different campaign in 1997, the ads were unique and inspiring. They included imagery of creative geniuses such as Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Mahatma Gandhi, Bob Dylan, Jim Henson, Pablo Picasso, and Miles Davis. With Jobs death and all of the subsequent pop-up memorials for him, Ive been reminded of the text of these ads. And I actually think they relate to you nail artists and others in the beauty industry so Id like to share those words here:
Heres to the crazy ones. The mis ts. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. Theyre not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you cant do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song thats never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? We make tools for these kinds of people. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
In our nail microcosm, you are the crazy ones. You see things differently. You create art on tiny canvases. You gure out ways to use products in unique and interesting ways. You challenge the status quo. You explore and invent. And while some people might not understand your passion or your art, I see strokes of genius. I am inspired by you all. I urge you to continue to push the boundaries. Remember to think different. And never, ever be afraid to be one of the crazy ones.

THE GREAT NAIL TECH CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
Editors Note: In response to The Great Nail Tech Challenge that ran in last years Big Book, heres a letter from one tech who accepted the challenge. Sara, what an awesome accomplishment! If you took the challenge to heart, wed love to hear from you on which ones you tackled. E-mail [email protected].
Challenge #6: Suggest a service your client doesnt normally get. I purchased a chemical heel peel product and when I see I wont be able to remove a clients heal callus almost completely, I suggest the peel. I apply it and it works while Im doing her toenails. Ive priced the add-on service at $10 and everyone has been happy with the results.
Challenge #11: Cross-promote with one of your business neighbors. Ive been cross-promoting with the hair salon I rent space with. For a couple of months we advertised together in the local paper. That campaign wasnt bene cial to either of us. Now we are going in together for an ad in the Yellow Pages, which is good for me because Im not listed there currently.
Challenge #20: Overcome your fear of retail. I have overcome my fear of retail. But Ive been really careful with what I carry. My biggest sellers are CND Solar Oil and CND Cuticle Eraser. I use them with every single mani and pedi in the salon. I use them myself. I think when you use them on clients and yourself they are easy to sell because you really believe in them.
Challenge #24: Pick a NAILS client handout (or create your own) to distribute to interested clients. I created a handout for all my Shellac customers (about half of my business) called Shellac Homecare to give them when they get their rst application. I also give them a mini bottle of Solar Oil. Most everyone said what a great idea that was and theyve never seen a tech give them something like that. I did it because theres so much to tell them about Shellac and a person can only absorb so much info.
Challenge #25: Work smarter, not harder. Every afternoon or evening, I send one group text to my customers for the next day and list their rst name and appointment time. It has cut down my no shows to almost zero!
Challenge #28: Take control of your schedule. Almost all of my customers pre-book and right now most are booked up through Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Challenge #40: Network with your peers. A local tech who has 10 years of experience including teaching nails (Ill have one year as of 12/1/11.) started coming to me for pedicures. Then we started trading pedicures. Now shes off ered to teach me more about gel nails and let me practice on her! This is priceless!
Challenge #42: Use social networking to market your business. Ive had a Facebook page ever since I was in school for my business. I continue to update it frequently. I also have a web page as well.
Challenge #45: Give yourself a raise. Im in the process of giving myself a raise right now.

When you first entered this industry, it
might have been necessary to adopt the
attitude that the client always comes first.
But by catering to your clients every whim,
youve created a monster. Its time to train
your clients to respect your time and it
starts by running on time yourself.Time yourself and find out truthfully how
long it takes you to complete each service,
then start booking precisely that amount
of time. If youre consistently late, clients
will start coming in late, compounding the
problem.Assuming youre on time, enforce
timeliness in others by reducing the length
of a service if clients are late and enforcing
your no-show policy.Get clients to pre-book. As a service
provider its up to you to teach your clients
how to reserve their next visit and to show
them how convenient it is to plan ahead.
Sixty-five: Its the age youll be when you can finally
take advantage of those senior-citizen discounts at
the movies. (Woo hoo!) And if you plan right, the
discount matinee wont be the only great thing about
your golden years you can also get the relaxing
retirement you deserve.The first steps to financial freedom, says C.P.A. Jane
Honeck, are to commit and choose. Commit to use your hard-earned dollars for both
today and tomorrow. Sounds easy, but how do you do
that? Divide a sheet of paper down the middle. On the
left side, list all the reasons why you dont save now.
On the right side, list the reasons why you want to

Jim GeorgeBack in the mid-1980s Jim Georges W.I.N.B.A. Show in Anaheim, Calif., set the standard for trade shows in the industry, and the competitions attracted hundreds from all over the country including me. Boasting huge ve-foot competition trophies and exciting awards presentations with Tammy Taylor, to name just one, competitors such as Tom Holcomb competed at W.I.N.B.A for many years.
Long after most independent trade shows ran their course, Bob Upshaw, the owner of Kupa, and I would visit Jim at his offi ce on Friday afternoons from time to time and talk about the old days when Jim was a cop in Las Vegas back when the ma a was in control. Jim was one of the last real founders of the nail business, and for those who have been around since that time, well fondly remember Jim and the good old days. You will be missed, Jim George.

Kenneth ReinerKenneth Reiner who, with his wife Dottie, co-founded salon furnishings and accessories manufacturer Kayline Enterprises, died on September 21, 2011, at the age of 95. Reiner, with a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s to work in the aerospace industry. He had a lot of innovative ideas that leave a legacy even through the present day, including Lady Ellen Klippies hair-styling tool and his founding of a nonpro t school called The Midtown School in Los Angeles Los Feliz neighborhood.
He co-founded Kayline when he was 58. Kaylines products, which include pedicure storage furnishings, manicure tables, and rollabouts, are designed and manufactured within the United States. He will be missed.
Ken CassidyA salon owner, licensed cosmetology instructor, industry advocate, and president of Kassidys Salon Management Consulting Company, Ken Cassidy passed away in October. He was a frequent contributor to NAILS on the topic of employees/booth rental/contract labor issues a subject about which he was passionate. Salon owner Rene Borowy of VIP Salon & Spa in Riverview, Mich., wrote this remembrance of him.
I met Ken Cassidy more than 17 years ago. I was going through a very hard time with my salon, which had been incorrectly classi ed as having independent contractors by a CPA rm. The government had gotten involved and it was way over my head. I was introduced to him through NAILS Magazine. Ken was in the middle of a project but made time to help in any way that he could. He spent hours with me helping to create a plan for survival of my company. He was always gracious and always there for others. He himself was a very successful businessman. I was shocked and upset to hear the news that he passed. Ken was cutting edge and way before his time with salon industry regulation. Ken and his legacy will be valued now and in the future.

WONT YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? Located in Redmond, Ore., population 18,000, Hip Chicks Salon caters mostly to local clients, but they also see out-of-towners visiting the nearby golf resorts, national forest, and state parks. The quaint area re ects a close-knit community where people know their neighbors. The salon, a few streets over from downtown Redmond in a more residential area, is no different. Surrounded by houses and other boutique businesses, everyone seems to know everyone else. A full-service hair, nail, and waxing salon, Hip Chicks has been open for ve years.
SEPARATE, BUT TOGETHER There are three nail techs at the salon, all of whom are booth renters. Two of them, including my tech Sierra Mills, also do hair. As booth renters, the techs set their own hours and prices (which they come up with collectively) and purchase their own products. Mills and Tara Cook, who gave associate publisher Michelle Mullen her pedicure, use a variety of products but seem to favor mostly CND products, including Shellac. The techs offer acrylics and gels in addition to natural nails. Cook has a solid pink-and-white business, with many regulars opting for the classic French.
BUILDING A BUSINESS Newbies at this salon, Mills and Cook are building their clientele by word of mouth, through Facebook marketing, and by networking with existing hair clients. The entire team has meetings where they share ideas to help bring clients in. Our pedicures were offered in this cute, custom-built area. Owner Neva Spurgeon says nail services make up about a third of the salons business. While she lets the nail techs run their own business, she does ask that they ask clients to book their next appointments when they check out.
> Hip Chicks website boasts that the salon is about luxury without ego and they strive for exceptional customer service in a non-pretentious environment. The salons home-like exterior makes you feel like youre just popping in to see a neighbor.
> The owner of the coff ee shop next door makes frequent stops in the salon to take orders for specialty tea and coff ee drinks. He even brought over some tasty crackers and locally made jam for us to try when we were getting our pedicures.
> Owner Neva Spurgeon spent three years waiting for something to become available on the street where the salon is located. Origi-nally, they were going to remodel the original house, but because of struc-tural issues they ended up having to destroy the building and apply for a new construction permit.

The Butter y Eff ect Angie Roman of Chicago shows how she makes these marbleized butter y designs that have uttered their way into becoming a client favorite.
The key to creating this perfect marble eff ect is to make sure the coat of polish is wet while dragging the colors to create the wings. You will need a striper nail art brush and some polish to complete this look.
When choosing colors, allow your imagination to run wild, but Roman off ers these words of advice: Choose two colors for your butter y, and then choose a background color. Make sure all three colors will complement one another.
Roman chose a light transparent pink for her background and purple and pink shades for the wings. Before starting, make sure the two colors for the wings are already open because you will need to work quickly before the polish begins to dry.
1. Apply two coats of background polish on all 10 nails. Apply your rst wing-color choice in the form of a curved line. Apply your second wing-color choice right next to it, and leave a space so you can repeat the curved lines as a mirror image.
2. Take your striper brush and very lightly pull your brush through both colors, stopping in the middle of the empty space. Repeat this to ll out the wing design, and make sure to angle the lines toward the middle so they meet in the center. The lines should all meet in the center of the empty space you left.
3. Once your wings are marbleized on all the nails, create the detail for your butter y by painting the body and outlining the butter y for a better look. >>>

AQAND }{Will the new LED lamps work with regular UV gels such as IBD, CND, or Star Nail, or does it only cure hybrid gels such as Gelish, Shellac, Gellac and other soak-off gels?
There are a wide variety of UV LED lights on the market at the moment and the differences between each of these lights is signi cant. This great variety of UV LEDs makes it impossible to answer this question adequately, but the fastest and most secure answer is that they will not cure all of the soft and hard gels on the market. Each manufacturer sells a light unit and a gel for that light unit. It is best advised that at this time, please use the light that is recommended for that gel. You can always call the gel manufacturer to ask if their gel will cure in a speci c UV LED light. They may have already tested their gel with that speci c light and be able to give you a suitable answer.

Create the perfect French look with Alfalfa Nails
Gel Art gel polish. The gels apply like nail polish
but cure to create an enhancement that stays on
nails for almost two weeks. Clients will love the high-gloss nish,
and Gel Art also comes in a range of other colors.
1. Prep the nails by sanitizing hands, pushing back cuticles,
shaping the nails, buf ng with a buf ng band, and wiping the
nail with cotton and alcohol.
2. Apply Gel Art Base and cure for 30 seconds under a UV light.
3. Apply White onto the nail tip and seal the edges. Do not cure.
4. Hold a gel brush at a 90 angle and draw the smile line. Clean
the brush with lint-free wipes and repeat if the smile line is not
perfect. Cure for 60 seconds under a UV light.
5. Apply Gel Art New Again #14 on the entire nail. Do not cure.
6. Use a short hair gel brush to remove the pink gel only on the
white tip area. This will make the white appear whiter and help
you achieve a uniform thickness. Cure for 60 seconds under a
UV light.
7. Apply Top Gel and cure for 30 seconds under a UV light. Wipe
off the tacky residue with alcohol and a lint-free wipe.
8. To soak off, use Gel Arts new Gel-Off clips. The clips t snugly
around the nail tip and hold the acetone only on the nail bed
to remove the gel polish without foil. One size ts all, and the
clips are acetone-resistant and can be washed thoroughly.

Tickled Pink Salon uses:Tickled Pink Bath Boutique (a division of Tickled Pink Salon) Strawberries & Cream Foot Soak, Scrub, Cuticle Oil, and Lotion; cuticle remover, acetone or 99% alcohol, strawberry slices, lemon slices; Beauty Secrets Sticky base coat, INM Out The Door top coat; strawberry-red polish, green acrylic paint, yellow acrylic paint, and green glitter.
1. Soak the clients feet in warm water with Tickled Pink Bath Boutique Strawberries & Cream Foot Soak and lemon and strawberry slices for about 10 minutes.
2. Serve the client a strawberry pastry and an iced strawberry lemonade (garnish with lemon and strawberry slices). Place a warm neck wrap around her neck.
3. Starting with the right foot, remove any polish and prep nails, including applying cuticle remover.
4. While the cuticle remover works, use a foot le to smooth out calluses. Then push back the cuticles.
5. Exfoliate the clients right foot with Tickled Pink Bath Boutique Strawberries & Cream Foot Scrub. Place the foot back into the foot bath and rinse off the scrub. Then repeat the prep steps and the scrub application on the left foot.
6. Remove both of the clients feet from the foot bath and dry them.
7. Apply Tickled Pink Bath Boutique Strawberries & Cream Lotion lightly on the clients feet and lower legs (no massage here).
8. Wrap both of the clients feet in warm towels.9. Massage Strawberries & Cream Lotion into both lower legs.
Remove the towels and massage the feet.10. Cleanse nails with acetone or 99% alcohol. 11. Apply Beauty Secrets Sticky base coat to nails. Create a
strawberry-themed nail art design on the clients big toes, using strawberry-red polish, green acrylic paint for leaves, yellow acrylic paint for seeds, and green glitter to add sparkles to the leaves. Apply the red polish to the other toenails.

Cool TextureIts always fun when we get to see new nail styles that weve never seen before. Thats what happened when Jennifer Mather of Polished Nail Design Group in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, came in to do this months cover. Mather has been a CND education ambassador since 1999 and when we rst contacted her, she sent us a bunch of really cool designs. We were intent on having her use CNDs new Additives a collection of 12 pure pigments and lustrous effects that can be blended into any CND sculpting powder, gel, or used as a topping for Shellac to create a custom nish. These are cosmetic-grade pure pigments that can be blended to create an array of colors. And they are great for creating sophisticated, fashion-forward nail art designs.
While weve never met before, Mather has plenty of experience creating unique nail styles. A nail tech for about 16 years, shes won many nail competitions in Canada, including the Contessa Nail Enhancement Artist of the Year in 2009. Shes also listed by BE! (Beauty Entertainment Magazine) as one of the top 40 North American nail technicians.
For this months cover, Mather came up with a fun technique combining CND Retention+ liquid and powders, CND Black Pigment, Cerulean Blue Pigment Effect, Titanium Pearl Pigment Effect, and Velcro yes, Velcro! Heres how you can do these nails:
1. Prep natural nails for enhancements. Sculpt a thin layer of clear Retention+ liquid and powder.
2. File the nails to desired length and shape.
3. Apply a thin layer of custom dark gray acrylic (Retention+ White Powder and CND Additives Black Pigment mixed) to one nail.
4. Using a small piece of Velcro, imprint the nail with the spiky side of the Velcro. Repeat dark gray and Velcro to nish all nails.
4a. This is what the nail will look like after the gray acrylic has dried with the Velcro imprint.
5. & 6. Using Cerulean Blue Pigment Effect, Titanium Pearl Pigment Effect and a dry brush, burnish the solid pigments randomly over the stippled nail surface.
7. Seal with Brisa Gloss, curing for two minutes.
Cover tech and CND education ambassador Jenn Mather created this months cool textured nails using CNDs new Additives collection and Velcro. The Canadian tech showed us a ton of great designs, but we loved this unique texture to go with our icy cover.

Ornament All Over AgainIn keeping with this holiday season, skilled nail tech and team Odyssey competitor Tammi Merritt shows how she uses pieces of broken Christmas ornaments to make shimmering and sparkling nail enhancements. Merritt warns techs though to be careful when using the small pieces of grandmas favorite accidentally broken ornament, as they can be sharp and scatter easily.

1. Prep the nail plate and apply your form. Merritt used a cover pink with the reverse method to create the illusion of a longer nail bed, but these can also be done with a traditional application technique.
2. Put on a very thin layer of transparent acrylic along with a thin layer of a black, starting at the free edge and blending down over the transparent color to create more interest.
3. Begin applying pieces of the ornament. You can pick them up with a small wet bead of acrylic or place them with tweezers onto a spot of wet acrylic. You may need to break the pieces up even smaller by using pliers or rolling something heavy over the larger ones. Just be sure to do this in a deep card-board or plastic box to contain any small pieces.
4. Once all of the pieces of broken ornament are applied, cover the entire enhancement with clear acrylic. Or you can try using a clear gel to cover the enhancement and encase the glass pieces. Gels allow the detail to really show through, especially if the ornament has color variations or a design.
5. File, shape, and buff the nails.
6. Apply top gel and cure under a UV lamp for two minutes, and enjoy the new life you brought to something that was once broken and otherwise headed for the trash.

Shine OnAt Well Polished in Katy, Texas, clients just might decide on their pedicure color from a glimpse of the salons chandelier. Handcrafted by Dr. Scott Balin, DC, as a grand opening gift to salon co-owners Donna Balin (his wife) and Chalanda Hook (his sister-in-law), the ceiling xture is made of over 70 SpaRitual lacquer bottles. We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the chandelier from Where can I get one of these? to How did anyone ever think of that? Donna Balin says. Its been a hit, but moreover ts right in our lil spa thats goal is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Like many of the other eco-friendly items at the salon, the chandelier was a found item (from a resale shop) that was then repainted and personalized. The colors can easily be changed by simply unscrewing the bottle top and replacing with the color of choice. >>>

In a late-night soiree at the Moon Nightclub inside the Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas, theres an event dubbed Bang Tuesdays! Hair Wars, which is an extraordinary hair design competition. When Headliners Salon in Las Vegas was chosen to be one of six salons to compete in the August 16 war, salon owner Tzigane Osborne put together a team of experts to create a whole look including nail tech Joy Yavenue of Nails by Joy in Henderson, Nev.
Playing to the theme of Jerseylicious, Tzigane came up with the idea of a long braid with fake sculpted hands going up it with accessories like combs, brushes, curling irons, mirrors, and jewelry incorporated throughout. Yavenue says, The hands were the hardest part. We used Crayola Modeling Clay to create them. It was light and could be molded into place and dried solid overnight.
The fake hands were then covered with diff erent colors and textures of hair, and, as the Jerseylicious nishing touch, Yavenue did 15 diff erent nail art designs (one set for each fake hand). The designs included chandelier nails (inserting a crystal-studded ring into a hole drilled into the tip), freehand zebra print, and ared bling French looks. On the live models nails, Yavenue created long nails with inlaid photos of the Jerseylicious cast in the acrylic, plus inlaid large gold glitter into the nails. The Headliners team (which also included model Chelsea Ball and make-up artist Haley Buckner) won rst place, and we wish them the best of luck at the nals this month!

Water down the white paint so its the consistency of milk. (Use an acrylic paint that 1. has a high pigment content, so it doesnt lose the depth of color.) Prep your clients nails, including pushing back cuticles, buffi ng the nail surface, and applying base coat. Using the polish brush that comes with the polish, apply two coats of Orly Stone Cold 2. polish. Make sure its dry before moving on to the next step. Dip the pen into the white paint, so the well lls up completely. Use the pen to draw 3. two loops on the tips of your clients nails, so that the barrels (thickest part) butt up to each other. Use the pen to add two small apostrophes inside the loops.4. Use the pen to add three teardrops in the center of the two loops.5. (Optional) Water down the blue acrylic paint. Use a small detailer brush to add detail 6. to the center of the white lines, enhancing the design by giving it a slight embossed appearance. Apply top coat.

Wintry Icicles1. Polish the nail blue. Let dry. Use silver
shimmer polish to make a purposely messy French free edge.
2. Use a striper brush with the silver polish to drag a thin line of polish vertically partway up the nail, tapering to a point to make an icicle.
3. Add several more vertical silver lines until you have about six icicles.
Nail Ornament1. Polish the nail red.2. Add a diagonal green line with three
smaller lines reaching out on each side. Add a blue circle at the end of one of the small green lines.

polish, curing after each coat.2. Add four blue rhinestones in a square

Feather extensions for hair are such a hot trend, but why should hairstylists have all the fun? Inventive nail techs have been experimenting with using feathers on clients nails too with striking and colorful results.

I came across the idea of feather nails by working with two of my friends who own their own business making feather hair extensions and supplying over 300 salons. (Her friends company is Feather Girlz by Jammin Jewelry, www.jamminjewelry.ca, which is happy to sell nail techs feathers for these nails.) Metallic charges C$50 (U.S. $48) for a set of feather nails. In addition to the feathers, youll need clear UV gels to create these nails. Metallic uses Gel-ous brands Flexi and Diamond Sealer.
1. Prep the nails, either with or without tips (shown with tips).2. Apply Gel-ous Flexi rst step gel to the nails. Dont cure yet.3. Let the client pick out the rst feather, then use a manicure
stick to apply it to the nail.4. Carefully cut the feather at the free edge.5. Use the manicure stick to straighten out the feather. Do
this for all 10 nails. (Tip: Use diff erent colors and patterns of feather on each nail to create a fun and funky overall look.)
6. Flash cure the nails in a UV lamp for 15 seconds. Apply Gel-ous Diamond Sealer gel to the nails. Cure for two minutes. Remove the sticky residue.

BUSINESS}Assistants Handle the Soak-Off sThe explosion of gel-polish means nail techs are busier than ever and at the upscale Red Door Spas it means nail assistants are guaranteed a full day of soak-off s. Not all Red Door techs are lucky enough to have an assistant on hand. We only have a few throughout our spas, mostly at very busy spas that do at least 125 gel-polish applications a month, says Alisha Botero, Red Doors national training director for nail services. Our Westchester, N.Y., spa averages 200 gel-polish applications a month with eight technicians and one assistant.
The assistants who are usually nail students or under a nail apprentice program earn their keep by making it possible for the techs to t in more services. We book 15 minutes for a gel-polish soak-off and it is scheduled with the nail assistant, says Botero. In a full day, this can allow our working technicians 10 more service opportunities by not occupying their time with soak-off s.
The nail assistants also pitch in with a number of other duties to assist the technicians allowing them more time with guests, such as cleaning manicure stations and pedicure tubs, running the autoclave, re lling products, rolling hot towels, restocking terry towels, and keeping the department and polishes clean and organized. >>>
