Vincentia Vibe - The voice of our school Term 3 Week 4B 10/08/2017 NAIDOC Week ‘Our Languages Maer’ On August 1 we celebrated NAIDOC week at Vincentia High School through holding a formal assembly and morning tea. This was a huge success and the whole school showed their upmost respect and pronounced maturity when viewing the assembly. We were fortunate enough to have two guest speakers who spoke about their journey and the obstacles they have had to face to achieve their dreams. Jake Trindorffer from Aime and Jason Gillard who plays for St George Illawarra Dragons both shared their stories and showed themselves to be amazingly talented role models and ex- students from Vincentia High School. The Dance & Didj troupe from Vinnie High didn’t disappoint either. They performed a number of dances such as the Welcome dance, Stingray, Mosquito, Woki and the Farewell Dance. We also had Mrs Brooks and Rhianna Thomas from Year 12 who sang a very moving performance of ‘True Colours’. There were a number of awards presented to Indigenous students who have excelled this year. Congratulations to these students who strive to do their best and achieve their goals. The 2017 National NAIDOC theme was ‘Our Languages Matter’. This theme ‘aims to celebrate the essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song,’ the NAIDOC Committee says. At the end of the assembly we had Aunty Dawn Whaddy raise the flag for the ceremony followed by a morning tea in the Ganya Garindja room. The Dhurga language room was also available for guests to go through and see the terrific work that Year 7 has produced this year. The Dhurga room highlights why language is so important in our community. Thank you to everyone involved with our NAIDOC assembly and morning tea. Ganya Garindja Team

NAIDOC Week

‘Our Languages Matter’ On August 1 we celebrated NAIDOC week at

Vincentia High School through holding a formal

assembly and morning tea. This was a huge

success and the whole school showed their

upmost respect and pronounced maturity when

viewing the assembly. We were fortunate enough to have two guest speakers who spoke

about their journey and the obstacles they have had to face to achieve their dreams. Jake

Trindorffer from Aime and Jason Gillard who plays for St George Illawarra Dragons both

shared their stories and showed themselves to be amazingly talented role models and ex-

students from Vincentia High School.

The Dance & Didj troupe from Vinnie High didn’t disappoint either. They performed a number

of dances such as the Welcome dance, Stingray, Mosquito, Woki and the Farewell Dance. We

also had Mrs Brooks and Rhianna Thomas from Year 12 who sang a very moving

performance of ‘True Colours’.

There were a number of awards presented to Indigenous students who have excelled this

year. Congratulations to these students who strive to do their best and achieve their goals.

The 2017 National NAIDOC theme was ‘Our Languages Matter’. This theme ‘aims to

celebrate the essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking

people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

history, spirituality and rites, through story and song,’ the NAIDOC Committee says.

At the end of the assembly we had Aunty Dawn

Whaddy raise the flag for the ceremony followed by a

morning tea in the Ganya Garindja room. The Dhurga

language room was also available for guests to go

through and see the terrific work that Year 7 has

produced this year. The Dhurga room highlights why

language is so important in our community.

Thank you to everyone involved with our NAIDOC

assembly and morning tea.

Sailability Shoalhaven/

Vincentia High School

Hansa World Championship Team Sailability Shoalhaven/ Vincentia High School sailing team are busy preparing to compete in the

Hansa Combined World Championships that are being held in Hiroshima, Japan in October 2018.

Sailability has been operating in the Shoalhaven region since 2005, providing sailing opportunities on Thursday’s for approximately 50 sailors each week. Sailability's philosophy of full inclusion for people of all ages, all abilities and from all social backgrounds is possibly the world's best example of an inclusive sport. The greatest gift we can offer people with disabilities is full inclusion in community, rather than the frequently experienced segregated activities.

Sailability Shoalhaven provides sailing for people living from Berry in the North, through to St. Georges Basin and Sussex Inlet in the South and is run 100% by volunteers. Benefits of Sailability for both participants and volunteers include improved self-confidence, team-work, decision making skills, mentoring, improved physical co-ordination and an opportunity to make a contribution within the local community.W

The relationship between Sailability Shoalhaven and Vincentia High School has been going from strength to strength over the past 8 years. The weekly sailing event at Grey’s Beach, North Nowra, is a highlight for students with disabilities. Some students also had the opportunity to compete in the NSW State Championships held at Coomba Park, near Forster, earlier this year.

Our 10-strong team, representing the Shoalhaven at the World Championships in Hiroshima comprises students and staff from the Vincentia High School Support Unit and Sailability Shoalhaven volunteers to take care of boat rigging, on-water safety and sail coaching. This will possibly be a once in

a lifetime experience for the Vincentia High School students.

In order for the team to compete in Hiroshima, a massive fundraising effort is underway. Funds raised will help to cover the costs of air tickets, accommodation, transfers from Tokyo to Hiroshima, regatta entry fees, cost of shipping our boats to Japan and return.

Sailability Shoalhaven and the Vincentia High School team would be appreciative of any support that individuals, service providers or businesses are able to provide. Donations to Sailability NSW Inc are tax deductible.

Should you wish to have someone from Sailability address your organisation to give a presentation about their activities and/or this project, please contact Mrs Sandy Clark, Deputy Principal Targeted Programs, 4441 6766.

Youth Frontiers Mentor Program

Fundraiser for Youth Mental Health

Last Week, Year 8 students involved in the Youth Frontiers Mentoring

Program held a cake stall to raise money for Headspace (Nowra). Emma

Rowley, Morgan Pickering, Harmony Dyer, Lydia

Collins and their mentors made a great selection of

cupcakes, brownies, muffins, cakes and slices.

Huskisson Bakery also donated an amazing

cake and Woolworths sent over a great variety

of biscuits. With the help of their friends, the

students sold everything from the cake stall

and raised $420.10.

Well done girls!

3rd in the State for our Futsal Team!

The senior girls Futsal team played in the state-wide tournament involv-

ing 24 teams this year, winning 6 games out of the 7 they played! The

girls beat the International football school, Moruya High, West Pymble

Ladies College, Ryde High and Gundaphlin College. Falling short to En-

deavour Sports High in the semi-final 4-2. The girls are extremely talent-

ed considering all the Schools they played train and play on their own

futsal courts twice a week. They are by far the most talented players I

have ever coached said Mr Corey Ryan. We are all very proud of the

effort and dedication from these girls, well done.

cast which also included the region's array of fresh produce, wildlife, Indige-

nous experiences, water activities and a wedding. Our support unit students

who sail weekly with Sailability Shoalhaven took part in the broadcast and

they are very excited to announce that they will be travelling to Japan next

year to sail with Sailability NSW! Hayden Regent led our alpaca Nalani as the

ring bearer and flower girl for the wedding that took place live on
