Dear guests,

The Dhadkan Executive Board would like to welcome you to Nachle Deewane 2014. What you will see today is the result of an intensive nine month journey that the Dhadkan Board, dance teams, and countless friends and family have embarked on. Although some of you may find a language barrier in understanding these performances, you will find that the energy, passion, and caliber of these teams are contagious. Everyone involved has put their heart and soul into the planning and execution of this performance, and we hope to create a lasting impression for you as our audience.

Dhadkan was established to provide world-class entertainment, and channel its influence towards a goal of revitalization and empowerment. This year, we have chosen to advance the quality of child education and nutrition in rural sectors of India. We are all still children at heart, and choosing to give back to them—what we are so privileged of having—has been heartwarming and humbling.

You are currently in the prestigious Arlington Theater, home of the world-famous Santa Barbara Film Festival and many other celebrity studded events throughout the year. We are very fortunate to call this theatre our venue, and hope Nachle Deewane reaches the high standard of art that the Arlington has come to present. The Dhadkan Executive Board, led by students Soham Tikekar and Nishitha Viswanathan, has worked endlessly to make Nachle Deewane a prestigious honor and lively experience for the best teams in the nation.

Nachle Deewane 2014 is the product of thousands of hours of work, with a cast and crew of almost 250. This program is meant to share a little bit about our journey, and we hope you enjoy the show tonight.

WELCOME

The tradition of fusing dance with theater and music can be traced to the 2nd century B.C.E. through India’s sacred text, the Natya Shastra. Just like Indian language and culture, dance is one of the most variant forms of expression, and differs from state to state. Nachle Deewane will showcase two prominent styles of dance:

Hindi-filmi Fusion: Combining the western techniques of contemporary and hip-hop with the cultural styles of Hindi film, classical, and folk traditions, filmi-fusion is one of the fastest growing dance forms in America. Ranging from the 2,000 year old traditions of South Indian bharatanatyam and North Indian kathak to Hindi film dance, originating in the Mumbai based film industry, Bollywood, it has even been featured on ‘America’s Got Talent’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ Bollywood dance was also seen in the Miss America beauty pageant, with winner Nina Davuluri performing to a popular track for a national audience.

Bhangra: This community folk dance, native to the northern state of Punjab, was originally done in villages to celebrate the arrival of the harvest season. Gaining momentum with the diaspora, a new style of bhangra emerged, combining styles of western performance with Punjabi tradition. Tonight, Bhangra performances will help celebrate Vaisakhi, the harvest festival of Punjab, which occurs yearly on April 14. Although Nachle Deewane is only a part of the festivities, we are honored to recognize one of the largest festivals in northern India at the show this evening.

According to UNICEF, India possesses the highest number of impoverished children in the world with ~62 million stunted and ~43.5% underweight. Stunting, or the ‘irreversible underdevelopment of children, resulting from malnutrition in the first 1000 days of life,’ is but one of the problems a developing country such as India faces. Though officially illegal, child labor still constitutes ~13% of the total work force and robs these children of their mental and physical selves at their most critical stage of creativity and growth. To break the cyclic pattern of poverty, we as students have recognized the need, not for charity, but for empowerment. Empowerment through education. Beginning in Madhya Pradesh, India.

India Friends Association (IFA) is a valid 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, which Dhadkan co-founder, Nishitha, has been working with for many years. Their mission is to ‘help change the face of India by becoming a catalyst in the economic self-sufficiency and empowerment of the underprivileged segments of Indian society.’ Approximately 58% of India’s subsidized food grain never reaches families below the poverty line, and in Madhya Pradesh, alone, there are ~5.7 million malnourished children. In 1975, the government established the Integrated Child Development Service to provide supplementary food and health care services in coordination with the state’s health care department and preschools, known as Anganwadi Centers (1 per 1000 children). Thirty years later, a supreme court review alarmingly discovered that most of these centers were not operational.

Dhadkan members have taken on a collaborative project with IFA to revitalize impoverished sectors of India and support children in poverty. Please consider donating to our cause in the envelope enclosed in this program. Every dollar, along with the revenue from each ticket, will be contributed so that children in India can learn, live, and begin to hope. You have the chance to change lives. So let’s get started.

Letter from the Founders

It has been a privilege for the two of us to have been given the opportunity to work with such amazing Board members, dancers, staff, and volunteers. Neither of us had any idea that submitting our Dhadkan registration papers at the Office of Student Life, on February 24 last year, would result in something of this scale. Honestly, we still can’t believe this is happening. For us, Dhadkan has been a whirlwind journey, filled with the everlasting memories and friendships that we have created along the way.

You, as our Board, have shown us creativity, imagination, professionalism, and sincerity- a tremendous feat for a brand new organization. We’re proud of each and every one of you for contributing your unique talents and showing your constant dedication in this club. Initially, your motivation for joining the club was probably the food we promised at every meeting, but hopefully that’s not true anymore! We are so grateful for your commitment and hard work. In addition, we’d like to acknowledge and thank Sabya Das, captain of UC Berkeley Zahanat, for advising us throughout this year with his perspective as an experience dancer in the circuit.

We would also like to thank UCSB Indus Cabinet members, who have been

working towards their own event tomorrow, Holi on the Beach, in an effort to make the ND14 weekend as much fun as possible.

We would additionally like to thank all the California residents for providing for this show with your tax dollars. Associated Students Finance Board at UCSB was overwhelmingly supportive of our vision at its earliest- when all we had was a binder of ideas- and funded almost 9,000 dollars to make this event possible. Along with Finance Board, there were many other supporting organizations: the Multicultural Center, Community Affairs Board, Community Affairs Board Foundation, the Office of Student Life, and Associated Students Print Shop (Thank you for dealing with all our large printing orders!).

The amount of love and support we have received from family and friends cannot be expressed enough. The insanity people endured to support the growth of a club we were so invested in is unmatched. Our parents not only supported us but also imparted a wealth of wisdom and guidance as we faced the challenges associated with the beginnings of any large-scale venture. And finally, we are so thankful to our family and friends for driving us forward in the right direction. Because neither of us have licenses.

Finally, we hope you continue your journey with Dhadkan by staying involved and visiting www.ucsbdhadkan.com

Sincerely,

Nishu and Soham

Ravaani is UC Santa Barbara’s first and only South Asian acappella group. Formed in 2011, this co-ed group brings a very unique brand of music to the campus community by taking both classical and popular Indian music and fusing it with the western a cappella style. The group’s name,

Ravaani, meaning wave or flow, is inspired by the UCSB’s breathtaking backyard, the beautiful ocean! Membership consists of undergraduate and graduate students with a variety of musical experience ranging from classical Indian and Western choral training to students who started off just singing in the shower. Ravaani is grateful to Dhadkan for always supporting and encouraging Ravaani’s passion for music.

UCSB Ravaani (acappella)

Born in India, Mickey began singing at the tender age of 3. After moving to the US at 14, he explored his musical creativity and developed an artistic blend of South Asian and western styles. Taking a different approach to Urban-Desi fusion, Mickey bridges the

gap between Indian and American music genres. His music is energetic and smooth, yet at the same time, creatively laces the best of east and west in a way that anyone can relate to. On stage, he creatively incorporates hip hop and Bhangra dance, and is sure to get you out of your seats. Not afraid to think outside the box, this singer, songwriter, and producer is a breath of fresh air in a market of commercially manufactured sounds.
