OVERVIEW: 

AIMS: ● The aim of this assignment is for you to learn about proportions when drawing the 

human figure and then to apply these skills and knowledge to a large painting of your own chosen figure. 

   DEVELOPMENT: ● This is the 1st of two main assignments for the Figure project. Through a series of 

sketchbook developments you will draw the human figure using a method called: The Bubble Bloke. Colour will be introduced to your work and you should demonstrate your skills at using colour effectively. Acrylic paint will be introduced to you for the final part of this assignment and this medium should be used for your final/main outcome. 

   OUTCOME: ● The main/ final outcome (A3: Figure) should be a large (A2 Paper) painting of a figure 

of your own choice. Your use of proportions and effective application of acrylic paint will be the main criteria for assessment.

 Guidance: ★ During this assignment, you should begin by completing a series of development 

tasks inside your sketchbook. ○ Title Page: ‘A3: Figure’ This is likely to be set as a homework task by your teacher. 

  

○ The Bubble Bloke method: Record your own example of the Bubble Bloke using proportions. 

 ○ Animated Bubble Bloke: Develop your figure drawing by repositioning arms/legs/limbs of your bubble bloke to help suggest movement.  ○ Action Pose ­ Using the bubble bloke method this task is for you to draw a figure using an action pose. Decide on a theme for your action pose, present a range of possible themes as a mind map or list inside your sketchbook. You will need to source images of all themes listed on your mind map for this task (typically set as a homework) and present your images as an imageboard inside your sketchbook:

★ When you have completed the initial tasks, you will be confident and prepared to begin work on your main/final outcome. 

 ★ Begin by choosing your own figure. This might come from your imageboard 

(previous task) or you might consider sourcing new images, or even making/taking your own photographs to use for this work. 

 ★ 3 developments (Prep) should be completed prior to starting your main outcome.

 When you have completed the previous 3 ‘prep’ items of your work, you are then ready to begin work on your final/main outcome. This should be created using a large sheet of A2 (size) paper. 

○ Draw a 1cm border around the edge of your paper sheet. Inside this border clearly write: 

■ The title of your work (top) ■ Your full name (bottom left) ■ Your full class name (bottom right) ■ The date (top right) 

 ★ Using the bubble bloke method accurately sketch your chosen figure and include a 

background.  

★ Develop your sketchy line by replacing it with a more controlled, sharp and stronger outline. Then remove any old sketchy line using a clean rubber. 

 

★ When you are ready to apply colour, use acrylic paint. You may/should need to practice using this medium inside your sketchbook. 

 

★ Work in layers (background towards the foreground) and be patient. You will need to build up the layers of colour to achieve strength and vibrancy. Ensure that you use/apply a full range of tones to suggest light.
