President’s Message

By Mark Webster

At the beginning of every year we all hope that the coming year

will be better than the previous year and wish everyone a Happy New Year.

As I mentioned in our January newsletter, I was really looking forward to 2020, not only because it is a leap year and we get an extra day to enjoy life, but because there are the quadrennial Summer Olympics and the exciting Presidential Elections.

To say the least, I have been disenchanted this year. (The Chinese Virus has caused world-wide devastation. This appellation of the pan-demic is merely designating the origin, as in Spanish Flu, West Nile Virus, Middle East Res-piratory Syndrome, Ebola, etc.) The Olympics were postponed and the Presidential Election is aggravatingly contentious and chaotic. Sadly and more significantly, hundreds of thousands of people have died and thousands of business-es have gone out of business forever.

Our last gathering was last February when we had a tour of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Muse-um on Ford Island capably conducted by do-cent and fellow member Fred Staedel. The tour was followed by a luncheon of sandwiches and sides in a meeting room at the museum.

Because of the virus, our scheduled March luncheon at the Oahu Veterans’ Center with a guest speaker was suddenly cancelled and the members; reservation checks were destroyed.

Because of the ongoing crisis, our annual General Membership Meeting at the Hickam AFB Officers’ Club with a Mongolian BBQ dinner has been cancelled as has our Christmas Party at Hale Ikena on 13 December.

Hopefully, we will be able to have our post-poned General Membership Meeting in January because we have important chapter business to address, such as the election of new officers for 2021 and approval by the chapter of the revised Bylaws. The installation of the new officers,

which is traditionally done at our January meet-ing, would be pushed back to February. All of this, of course, is wishful thinking depending upon returning to some semblance of normalcy.

This year’s Chairman of our Nominating Committee, Kelly Lau, was tasked with select-ing the three member to our Board of Direc-tors to replace those whose terms are expiring. What he initially did was to wisely entice those three members to extend their terms for an-other three years; they all agreed to do so! Thus, Wesley Fong, Mike Fricano and John Kim will be staying on the board.

Not having any meetings, luncheons or tours since February is distressing. We may be losing our cohesiveness and fellowship. Keep the to-getherness going by staying in contact, calling each other and getting together in small groups.

Best Wishes and Stay Safe and Sane. Mark

The Trivia Question

When social security was passed so a person could receive $ at age 65, average age of death was 59.9 for men and 63.9 for women. But, wow, Jeanne Calment turned 122 in 1997 be-fore she died... just wondering - how old was

the average 18 year old in 1942?

Scholarship Com-

mi9ee Meeng At 0900 on Friday, 30 Octo-ber, the Trustees of the Hawaii Aloha Chapter’s Scholarship Fund had a scheduled virtual meeting. The Chairman, John Ma, set up this Zoom meeting. All nine trustees of the commit-tee were in attendance.

The Trustees of the Scholar-

ship Committee disburse $500 scholarship checks to nomi-nated and deserving JROTC cadets attending 27 schools in Hawaii and $1000 checks each to the top Army and Air Force cadets at UH. Soon there will be a Navy ROTC program at UH and one of those cadets will be a beneficiary of $1000.

Leadership Awards are also presented to cadets on Guam,

Saipan and US bases in Japan.

During the meeting a motion was made to increase the JROTC scholarship checks to $750. Not all schools nominate a cadet for our scholarship. The motion was approved.

There will be two vacancies on the Scholarship Commit-tee. This is a very rewarding endeavor helping our youth. Any volunteers?

Chaplain’s Corner

By Dr. Fred P. Staedel

Christmas will mark 40 weeks for the COVID--19 shutdown in Hawaii. This reminded me of the 40 days and nights Jesus wrestled alone in the wil-derness in his personal “shutdown.” He came out of this challenge victorious and blessed by God with his “mission in life” clearly defined and his dedication to what his future should be empowered by the grace of his God.

And we can come out of our 40 weeks of a “wilderness” experience on December’s “holy day” by being prayerfully thankful for not only our survival but hopefully with a clearer sense of our personal “mission in life” on how we will move forward with an “attitude of gratitude” and service to others starting with family and friends. The atti-tude we express is critical and thusly conta-gious by family and friends. Holding onto resentment of how we were treated or being critical of our leaders trying to make deci-sions in our best interest to the best of their judgement in addressing a unique calamity is self-destructive and an impediment to mov-ing forward.

“And they went every one straight forward; whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went.” (Ezekiel 39:22)

So, let us follow the “spirit” of Ezekiel as we move forward and reject, as Jesus did, the evil of temptation, the temptation to be self-absorbed in anger and bitterness. Let us remind ourselves when we finally come to the end of this dark tunnel, “That morn-ing will come again because no darkness, no season, can last forever.” (Spring Day)

Blessings, Fred

A BRAIN BOOSTER...........The foods we eat affect our cognition and brain health. This has been a known fact for centuries, but over time re-

searchers have continued to pinpoint and learn more specifically how certain nutrients work within the brain. The result was the creation of the MIND di-et, developed by scientists at Rush University in Chi-cago back in 2015, specifically to reduce dementia and improve brain health. MIND is one of the top ten diets on the "best diets" list for the easiest diet to follow and ranks fourth for best overall.

MIND emphasizes berries, fish, and leafy greens. To improve cognition and reduce the risk of de-mentia, MIND recommends Beans, Berries, Fish, Nuts, Poultry, Vegetables (leafy greens and others), Whole Grains, and Wine. MIND recommends we eliminate or reduce Butter, Fried/fast food, Sweets/Pastries, & Full-fat cheese. You won't find a recommendation for high dairy consumption ei-ther. A daily glass of wine, due to the resveratrol in red wine, red grapes, and grape juice has been proven to increase blood flow to the brain and throughout the body.

MIND also recommends snacks most days on nuts and eating beans every other day or so. These are great for your cardiovascular system, and what's good for your heart is also good for your brain.

Since MIND diet's requirements are less restric-tive than other diet plans, researchers suggest it might be easier to plan and maintain.

Rush University's research on 900 participants, ages 58-98, showed that participants of the MIND were less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. An Australian study of 1220 adults 60 and older were found to have lower cognitive impairment, Alzhei-mer's, and other dementias. A third study found the MIND diet also reduced the risk of stroke.

Remember..... Berries..... Beans..... Fish....... Nuts....... Poultry.... have reduced risks of Alzhei-mer's, Dementia and Stroke.

Aloha for now. ` Jayne
