March Tour and Luncheon

On or about 9:30 AM, Thursday, March 17th, subject to change in the March newsletter, we will assemble at the Joint POW/MIA Ac-counting Command (JPAC) at Hickam AFB to tour their Central Identification Labo-ratory, the largest forensics laboratory in the world.

The mission of JPAC is to achieve the fullest possible accounting of all Americans missing as a result of the na-tion’s past conflicts, going all of the way back to the very uncivil Civil War to identify the remains of Union sailors aboard the first ironclad USS Monitor. The highest priority of the organization is the re-turn of any living Americans that remain prisoners of war.

But JPAC’s mission is not solely the recovery and iden-tification of missing Ameri-can service members. The command’s anthropologists and other personnel also per-form humanitarian missions in a variety of locations and often under dire circum-

stances, such as the aftermath of the tsunami that struck south Asia in 2004.

MG Stephen D. Tom, USA, assumed com-mand of JPAC in Janu-ary, 2010, re-lieving RADM Donna Crisp, USN. He was

a private practice attorney and a partner in a law firm when he was recalled to active duty in January, 2006.

President’s Message by

Robert Kozuki

After a long search for a chairperson for the Program Committee, we have three individuals who have stepped up and taken the

job as co-chairpersons. Jane Kekoa, Henry Lee and Mel Soong have agreed to take on the responsibilities of the Program Commit-tee. They are in the process of planning the program for 2011. We will be reporting their work efforts shortly in our newsletter.

The other challenge faced by our chapter is to balance our budget and to look at our fund- raising effort. Our major source of income is the annual “chicken sale.” However, our in-come from the sale of the chickens has de-creased over the past several years due to the increase in the wholesale cost of the chickens that was not passed on to our membership. We plan to correct that this year so you can ex-pect an increase in your contribution to our fund-raising effort.

Your Executive Committee (EXCOM) is also looking at selling more advertisement in our newsletter as a source of income. Any sugges-tions or assistance from our membership will be greatly appreciated.

A Valentine’s Day Treat On February 14, 2011, the Merrie Ladies will be-gin the new year with a Valentine's Day event at "A Cup of Tea" tea room in Kailua, a quaint café with a Victorian décor. The ladies are encour-aged to wear anything that is red and, if possible, wear a hat. Rowena Okita and Lani McKe-

ague are planners for this special event and are looking forward to seeing many Merrie Ladies in attendance. Please note that the tea will begin at 10 AM, not 11 AM as previously reported; the price is $25.00 per person, including gratuity. The tea room is located at 407 Uluniu Street (across from Assagio's Restaurant) and their phone num-ber is 230-8832. Because parking is tight, car-pooling is highly recommended.

You may wish to go to their web site at www.acupoftea.com for more specifics on the restaurant and its location, prices and parking.

For more details call Rowena Okita at 262-0882, Lani Mc Keague at 239-9654 or Charlene Towne at 623-9731. Marion

(very welcome after a prolonged wet spell) and nice, gentle trade winds. Couldn’t ask for anything more, except, perhaps, a lower golf score for yours truly.

As usual we had Allen Ono leading our gang of golfers. Playing with him were John Ma, Cedric Chong, and Ken Munechika; next, our star-studded foursome of Kelly Lau, Bob Lee, Steve Tom and Ron Lowe, all Major Generals; the third group was led by Mert Agena, with Walt and Janice Kino-shita, Curtis Lee and Bob Nagao, followed by Joe Kuroda, John Jefferis, Ken Yamada and his guest, Akiko Noda; in the fifth group were Len and Honeyjean Katsarsky, Larry Enemoto, and John Kim; next to last were John Seeley, Howard Okada, Ron Katto and his guest, Ron Taguchi. Bringing up the rear were Alice Fujiwara, yours truly, and our guests, Gordon Paulsen and Bill Cavell.

After drawing numbers to determine the blind partners, with the help of Gordon Paulsen, and tabulating their net scores, we had Ron Katto and Bob Nagao in 6th place with a net total score of 154, in fifth place was the pair of Janice Kinoshita and Ken Munechika with 152, then, in fourth place with 147 were Bill Cavell and Ken Yamada; in third place with a score of 145 were John Ma and Cedric Chong. Missing the top spot by 8 strokes were Mert Agena and Curtis Lee. Our grand champions were Bob Lee and Steve Tom with a score of 137. Congratulations to all the win-ners especially our champions who were playing their first game with the Aloha Chapter Golfers.

l hope that all the players enjoyed them-selves as much as I enjoyed coordinating and receiving the cooperation of all players in our opening golf outing for the 2011 season.

Now for the thought of the day, don’t worry be happy: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”

Our next Aloha Chapter golf outing will be on Friday, February 25th, at Barbers Point GC, first tee time 9:00AM. See you then! Norm

January Golf Report

We opened our 2011 Golf Season on Friday, January 21st, at the Navy-Marine Golf Course with a real barn burner. We were able to establish a number of high-water marks. First of all, we had a total of 29 players or

seven full tee times with a five-some in be-tween and, secondly, a star-studded lineup of a total of seven flag officers—one 3 stars, four 2 stars and 2 one star—and, finally, seven guest players. It is not a record, but having four wahine golfers was nice, too.

To top this outstanding record, we had a beautiful, sun-filled day, lots of blue skies
