The Atlas ‘Thrive Across Hawaii’ (TAHI) program officially kicked-off it’s 8-week journey on
September 18th. A total of 15-teams made up of 76-employees started including 30-60 minutes of
physical activity into their workdays (and for some, their weekends), in hopes of becoming healthier, de-
creasing stress, and perhaps winning some incentives.
The Atlas HEART committee developed this program in partnership with
Kaiser Permanente in hopes of helping our one Atlas team better their
health and increase their physical activity, and after the first two weeks,
that appears to be the result. Daily, you will find staff out in small
groups walking loops around downtown, and/or counting their steps
with our committee-issued pedometers. Way to go Atlas!
The teams came up with some creative names, such as ‘Lucky Charms,’ ‘The Avengers,’ ‘Heart & Sole,’ ‘The
Pacemakers,’ and ‘Workout-Aholics.’ The first week winning team, ‘The Expendables,’ made up of Keane
Muranaka (Claims), Nadine Cui (Special Projects), Peaches Kong (Maui), Steven Pang (Risk) and Irene
Zilisch (Maui), came in with highest average minutes for a team. The second week winning team, ‘The
Workout-Aholics,’ made up of Anna Gima (Accounting), Corina Hill (Personal Lines), Kristl Ito-Lau (Maui
Agent), Kurt Sibayan (Risk) and Phuong Ma (CCG), came in with the highest percent increase in team
points. Great work thus far winning teams!

Atlas recognized again as health iest employer PBN ‘Health iest Employers ’ g ives At las nod, approval
Once again, Atlas Insurance has been recognized as one of the healthi-
est employers in Hawaii by the Pacific Business News. The first recogni-
tion by PBN of this type was started last year with the inaugural PBN
‘Healthiest Employers’ awards, and Atlas received the recognition last
year as well.

in the lunchroom, our ‘Thrive Across Hawaii’ program, our numerous
charitable efforts, our Office Activities Committee and the fun stuff that
helps us mitigate stress, Atlas continues to improve how we promote
work/life balance. There’s clearly much more to do, but this recognition
validates our efforts thus far, and further motivates us to keep growing
this initiative.

Mike, the amendment for the extension is attached with the exhibits.
Mike, by the way, we will be turning over the keys to the building to the Cancer Center inhabitants on October 1. We
already started work on the extension and work on the concrete slab is done. We are very pleased with the excellent
work and care of your/our safety consultants. David [Ching] in particular is knowledgeable, effective and most impor-
tantly a very kind person. As a result people listen to him. I am sure he taught Mel, ACK’s safety person, a lot about
safety and working with people. Thank you for sharing DAVID with us.

Lynette ‘Kanani ’ Perei ra Newest Account Manager addit ion to our CCG team
Lynette Pereira, better know to her friends as ‘Kanani,’ joined Atlas in September as our newest AM in CCG. She also cele-
brated her birthday in September on the 11th, and joining the Atlas team was the one gift she wanted and received.
Lynette has a 13-year-old son, Nainoa, and considers ‘staying afloat’ during these tough economic times one of her per-
sonal triumphs. She’s challenged by time management, and she’s unwilling to share a secret about her, because as she
states, ‘if I tell you, it’s no longer a secret!’ Yep, you got me!
Lynette’s best vacation was an Alaskan cruise, and she’d love to one day travel to Italy and Portugal. Lynette enjoys Ha-
waiian food, as well as Italian and Korean food. Her favorite color is the color of money—green, and she loves cooking!

Cheeeeee-hoooooooo! Well, that’s probably what went through Priscilla Narvaez’s head when she found out she was
able to ‘officially’ join the Atlas team as our full-time receptionist after spending 3+ months as a contracted employee.
Her bright smile and naturally cheerful personality made her a shoe-in to fill the position on a permanent basis.
Priscilla, or ‘Pris’ to her closest friends,’ is a July baby and is married to Travis Salibad. Her wedding anniversary falls in
October, and her and Travis share the rearing duties to one son, 12-year-old Sebastian.
Priscilla’s best vacation ever was to New York, and her worst was in Pleasonton, Texas. If she could travel anywhere in the
world, it would be several countries throughout Europe, including Greece, Spain, and Italy. She just loves arroz con pollo
(chicken and rice, Mexican style), and her favorite color is purple.
When it comes to hobbies, Priscilla loves traveling and experiencing where history once took place. She loves learning about different cultures.
Naturally motivated to succeed, Priscilla hates when someone tells her something isn’t possible. According to her, ‘it usually just motivates me
to try harder to succeed. I try to always have a ‘can-do’ attitude.’ We can tell Priscilla, and we’re happy to have you as part of our Atlas Insur-
ance Agency family of employees—on a permanent basis!

With a really big smile, bright personality, and loads of enthusiasm, we’re lucky to inherit someone completely new to the
insurance world, Christine Soquena!
With prior experience mostly in the medical industry, Christine looks forward to the challenges and opportunities the in-
surance industry, and more specifically, Atlas Insurance, will provide her. She’s a fast typer and she’s got great customer
service skills, so her addition to our Personal Lines AA team is a natural fit.
Christine enjoys spending time with her family, and she enjoys crafting. Her favorite color is purple and if she could travel
anywhere in the world, it would be Europe! Welcome to Atlas Christine!

Several of our Atlas team attended a Child & Family Service (CFS) charitable function back on September 15th called
‘Boogie Wonderland.’ Like the name implies, guests were asked to wear their favorite 70’s era threads and hit the
disco-ball illuminated dance floor, all the while shouting things like ‘cool,’ ‘groovy,’ and ‘hip.’ What’s that all about?
To make matters worse, Colbert Matsumoto wore the loudest shirt of them all, making him the easiest target for both
ridicule and praise. Turn it down Colbert, we can hear your shirt from here!
Then there was those of us at Atlas that preferred the more sophisticated ‘white out’ dinner and fundraiser for
Make-A-Wish Foundation at the Kahala Resort. Who needs all that ‘boogie-woogie’ fun when you can feel dap-
per, sip on wine, and bid on expensive give-a-ways. Not I.
Seriously, a second team of Atlas mates made their to the Make-A-Wish event the same evening as the CFS
event, ensuring Atlas was present from the Blaisdell to Kalaha supporting great causes. How’s that for divide
and conquer!? Thanks Carol Davis for organizing and ensuring a solid Atlas presence at both events!

Congratulations Dania! by Melanie Nordgran, Atlas Olelo Hui Toastmasters President
As President of the Atlas Olelo Hui Toastmasters Club, I would like to recognize Dania
Narruhn (Personal Lines) for being honored with the Best Speech award for the month
of September 2012! This award is voted on by club members for the best speaker dur-
ing our monthly meetings.
This recognition is even more impressive because it was Dania’s first speech in our
Toastmasters club, and she hit it out of the ball park! Dania has natural gift for being
comfortable in front of the audience and relaying her personal stories with grace and
humor. Dania has been a member of Toastmasters for a few months and has already
made significant contributions. Her speech this month was very inspiring; our club
agrees she has a very bright future in Toastmasters.

Kapiolani Hospital Halloween Party volunteer opportunities
Atlas will again team up with Island Holdings and participate in the Halloween Party for the children at
Kapiolani Hospital. It’s a wonderful event and the families totally appreciate our efforts. It can, however, bring out some emo-
tions as the kids may come to the party connected to an IV or visibly obvious that they are suffering from some type of serious
health condition or treatment. Our party is to help them take their mind away from their medical challenges and have some
Halloween fun! There will be games, crafts, and much more.
The deets:
Date: Friday, October 26
Location: Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children
Time: 2:30 – 6:30 (includes set up & clean up; the party runs from 4:00 - 6:00)
Help: Atlas games, simple so that kids in a wheelchair or connected to an IV can participate
# of Kids: 100, but they trickle through slowly (siblings of the hospitalized kids are invited too)
If you’re interested in helping with the Atlas games, please be sure
your manager is ok with you being out that afternoon. We only need
a few volunteers but the committee is asking for names of the volun-
teers...so please respond to Sandy Tsukada (8791) by Friday, Sep-
tember 7th.

A Charlotte, NC lawyer purchased a box of costly cigars and insured them against flood, storm damage and, of all
things, fire. Needless to say, his investment went up in (happily inhaled) smoke within a month, after which the
lawyer filed a claim with his homeowners insurance company that he was owed compensation because "the cigars
were lost in a series of small fires". The insurer refused to pay, assuming (correctly) that the man had smoked the
pack himself. A judge ruled, however, that since the insurer had never stated what was considered to be
"unacceptable" fire the company did, in fact, owe him $15,000 to replace his property.
The insurance company paid the claim, but they got their own back in the end. The lawyer was then arrested, sen-
tenced to 24-months in jail and a $24,000 fine for 24-counts of arson and insurance fraud.
You gotta be kidding me. . .but we’re not !
