One year has elapsed since the passing of MikeDillon. Our memories are full, our hearts are

full, and our plates are full. Our efforts as a familyhave been to continue his legacy and the workthat Mike pursued. The employees of Mike’s twocompanies, Dillon Precision and Dillon Aero,have likewise strived to continue his commitmentto old-fashioned ingenuity, respect for others, andhonest business practices that build consumerconfidence and loyalty.

Mike epitomized the American Dream: comingfrom humble beginnings, trading his labor for fly-ing lessons in order to become a crop duster, firebomber, andairline pilot.Mike’s love forhistoric aircraftled him torestore a “likelyto have beenscrapped” Cur-tiss P-40N backto original fly-ing condition.In 1965 he soldthat airplane(N1226N) tothe Commemo-rative Air Force,its currentowner andoperator. Mikewas one of thefirst of many togo on to restoreand preservehistoric aircraft.Years later herestored andoperated aTemco TT1Pinto Jet (the first jet-powered Navy primary flighttrainer aircraft), which he subsequently donatedto the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

In the 1970s, while employed by TWA, Mikepursued a second career flying vintage aircraft as awriter and photographer for the then-popular AirProgress magazine. He was always fond of histime spent with Air Progress.

Enter now, since childhood, his love of gunsand shooting. His initial efforts to economize theexpense of shooting resulted in his designing andmarketing a conversion kit for an existing machinecalled a Star Reloader. The Star Reloader, manufac-tured by Star Manufacturing, was only capable ofloading small pistol cartridges; but, in the mid-70s,AR-15 rifles were becoming popular and there wasa need for inexpensive .223 ammunition. Mike’s

conversion kit allowed the Star Machine to load.223 rounds. From this, Mike’s new company,Superstar Manufacturing, was born – in his garage.After his initial foray into the reloading industry, in1977 Mike decided to design his own machine.This was the RL 1000, and with this machine camea new company – Dillon Precision Products. Manyproducts followed, all designed to fill needs thathe felt the industry had neglected. His designswere good, but it was his past experience as awriter and publisher that provided him the cruciallink to success: the catalog – the one you are read-ing now, designed to entertain as well as advertise

From thesesimple begin-nings, ourdream came tolife. It has beena full, excitingand colorfullife. as a deep commitment with our family. Mike’sinvolvement with the NRA is enthusiastically sup-ported by each one of the family. By J. B. WoodWhen you think of Bond Arms, you immediate-

ly think of their ultimate re-design of the Reming-ton “double-derringer.” Well, think again – theyare now making a fine little auto-pistol, a 9mmsub-compact. In both history and mechanicaloperation, it has quite a story.

It began about five years ago, in White BearLake, Minnesota. Design genius Arne Bobergdecided that there was a problem with sub-com-pacts in 9mm: Velocity. In all of them, the rifledportion of the short barrels usually was only abouttwo inches, or less. Thus, even with hot loads, thebullet never reached optimum speed.

Arne solved this problem in a weirdly beauti-ful way. He extended the barrel far to the rear, allthe way over the magazine well, and had the car-tridges feed out of the magazine rearward. A setof “tongs” on the slide take the round out of themagazine, and a frame-mounted platform lifts itto feeding position.

It worked, perfectly, and the rifled portion ofthe barrel measured nearly three inches. Withsome loads, this gave velocities up to 1400 foot-seconds, and energy of around 500 foot-pounds.

For the next few years, Arne produced the pistolas the Boberg XR9-S. Then, about a year ago,Bond Arms acquired the design, and it becamethe Bond Bullpup.

Before we get into the operational features ofthe Bond Bullpup, let’s backtrack for a moment tocover two important points – historical, andmechanical. Around 120 years ago, in England,we see the only other example of a rearward-feed-ing magazine. It was the Mars pistol, designed byHugh W. Gabbett-Fairfax. Its delicate feed systeminvolved a separate breech-block, and major partswere exposed at the rear during recoil.

None of this applies to the Bond Bullpup. Thefeed system is all internal, and strong. There is onecaution, about ammo: do not use reloads, elcheapo brands, or any aluminum-cased stuff. Withthese, the rearward pull-out from the magazinewill sometimes pull the case off the bullet! Withquality ammunition, never a problem.

The well-written manual, full of the usuallawyer-ly warnings, has a lengthy list of approvedammo on page 6. For ordinary range use, Bondrecommends the Winchester “White Box” 115-grain FMJ load. For serious business, one of the

nine listed is the Hornady Critical Defense. In test-firing, both worked fine. More on this later.

On the gun shown here, the finish on thehigh-tech alloy frame is matte black. The stain-less-steel slide is natural matte. The grip panels,meeting at the rear, are laminated wood. Thefront-strap of the grip-frame has light cross-groov-ing. At upper rear, there is a deep in-curve thatsets the pistol firmly in the hand.

Instead of Browning’s falling-barrel, the lockingsystem is turning-barrel. Back around 1905, KarelKrnka in Austria and Elbert Searle in America dis-covered its advantages. It keeps the bore closer tothe hand, and adjusts its unlocking speed to theload used. Also, some say the non-tilting barrelaffects the felt-recoil.

The trigger system is Double-Action-Only, andthe pull is ultra-smooth – average, 8 pounds. Thereis no manual safety as, with the long DAO triggerpull, there’s no need for one. Inside, the firing pinis blocked at all times, and is cleared only in thelast bit of trigger pull. On top of the slide, justabove the extractor, a small opening lets you see achambered round.

The sights are excellent, square-picture, threewhite dots. Both front and rear are horizontallyadjustable in their dovetails, by loosening the hex-screws. If you’re moving the rear sight, be carefulto keep it in its dovetail, because its under-sideretains the spring and plunger of the automatic fir-ing-pin-block.

Old-timers may be startled by the magazines,not only by their rearward-feeding, but also bythe lack of any follower-piece at the top. Therounds directly contact the perfectly formedspring, with no problems. Design-wise, this

allows a capacity of seven rounds; with one-upgiving you eight shots.

After the last round, there is no slide hold-open.With this magazine design, it would have beendifficult. I see a way to do it, but it would requireup to six more parts, and extensive extra machinework. It’s better left off. For a quick brush-out aftershooting, you can lock the slide open by settingthe takedown-lever at halfway point.

There are other very welcome omissions in thedesign. No magazine-disconnect safety, so youcan still fire a chambered round if the mag is lostor damaged. No dumb “hook” on the front of thenicely-rounded trigger guard. And, most impor-tantly, no silly “flipper” safety in the wide,smooth-faced trigger.

For deep-concealment carrying, the dimension-al numbers are excellent. Overall length is 5 inch-es. Height, 4.06 inches, and width, 1 inch. Barrellength, 3.18 inches. Weight, 18.7 ounces. Asnoted earlier, magazine capacity is 7 rounds. It’s atrue sub-compact, but superior ergonomics makeit more pleasant to shoot than most of the others.

It’s not a target pistol, so I didn’t try any rested,long-range stuff. Distances were 7 yards and 15yards, standing, two-hand hold. Several well-cen-tered groups averaged between 4 and 5 inches,more than adequate for personal defense. Usingthe recommended loads, functioning was flawless.

Later on, there will be other finishes offered. Anall-black version, for example. Considering thefeatures and high quality, the MSRP is reasonableat $977.

Dillon’s RL 550 has long worn the title of “TheWorld’s Most Versatile Progressive Reloader,” and

stripping it down to its most basic form – Dillon’s BL(Basic Loader) 550 – adds a whole new dimension ofversatility for the shooter/hunter who needs to feedseveral rifles.

The BL 550 is essentially an RL 550 without the auto-matic priming and powder systems. Capable of loadingover 160 calibers – just like the RL 550 – it uses anymanufacturer’s standard 7/8” x 14 reloading dies. It’spriced comparably with other manufacturers’ turretpresses; yet unlike them, it’s fully upgradeable to Dillon’sProgressive RL 550 loader!

The interchangeable toolhead (Page 15) makes itquick, easy and inexpensive to change calibers. Forexample, if you load .30-06 for elk, .243 for deer and.22-250 for coyotes, you don’t even have to change theshellplate. You simply pull two pins and swap the tool-head with your .30-06 dies to another toolhead withyour .22-250 or .243 dies in less than 30 seconds! Theadditional toolheads are $22.95 each, or $20.95 each ifyou buy three or more – if you load for several rifles it’s ano-brainer! Once you get your dies adjusted, you’llnever have to re-set them.

A powder measure adapter (bottom right photo) isavailable if you want to use a manual measure that youalready own. Or, if you want to weigh every powdercharge you load, it’s easy – you can use a powder trick-ler with the powder die/funnel assembly that comeswith the BL 550.

CV-2001 – The Industry Standard Dillon’s CV-2001 Vibratory Case Cleaner is the

largest in the industry. Its 12-1/2 quart bowl capacitywill allow you to polish up to 1,300 .38/.357 or 550.30-06 cases per hour.

Not only is our capacity greater, but our motor islarger in horsepower, internally cooled, thermally pro-tected, and turns on precision ball bearings. This is no“hobby” machine!

The bowl and base are constructed of 7/32” thickinjection molded high-strength polypropylene which isimpact and abrasion resistant.

Case/Media SeparatorsAfter we sold thousands of our famous first genera-

tion FL-2000 case cleaners, customers who had pur-chased them began asking us to address the problem ofseparating the cleaned and polished brass from thecleaning media.

We knew from the beginning that the simplestmethod of separating would be a rotating squirrel cage,but we had to find a design we could manufacture eco-nomically. Our problem was that it had to be BIG – bigenough to handle the entire load of the FL-2000 seriescase cleaners.

The solution was an injection molded reversible part.Simple, and it works great. Ourdevice is large, 10” x 14”, and willhold more than 1,600 .38 Specialcases. It sits on a large media col-lection tub that measures 18” x 22”.The tub keeps the mess off the floorand bench.

It’s fast – so fast it will removemedia from 1500 rounds of .223brass in a matter of seconds.

Limited Work Space?Dillon’s introducing the new CV-750 heavy duty

Vibratory Case Cleaner for those with limited space. Thisnew case cleaner uses the same motor as the CV-2001and is every bit as tough – just more compact. To

accompany the CV-750, the CM-500 does the same jobas the larger CM-2000 Case/Media Separator; and, likethe CV-750, handles just about half the capacity of thelarger unit.

Sizing/Depriming DieOur sizing/depriming dies feature a unique “floating

decap assembly” with a snap spring that throws thespent primer off the pin and eliminates the problem ofprimer “draw back” that often occurs when decappingmilitary brass. The primary feature of Dillon’s size diedesign – the long, tapered carbide ring with a radiusedopening – remains unchanged.

That radiused opening, and its importance to progres-sive reloading, is one of the reasons why our seat andcrimp dies are better. We found a way of manufacturingthese dies that has enabled us to make the lead-in radiuseven bigger! The bigger radius makes progressive loadingwith our equipment even smoother – but that’s still onlya part of the story.

Bullet Seating DieOur quick-disassembly seat die allows the user to dis-

assemble and clean the seat die without losing adjust-ment. In this manner, bullet lube and shavings can bequickly removed from the die, thereby guaranteeing aconstant seating depth. We’ve incorporated a “flip-flop”seating stem and a clip that enables you to remove thedie insert and change the seating stem from round noseto semi-wadcutter without unscrewing a seating stem outof the die body. We’ve always included both types ofseating stems, but the new double-ended design makes ita simple matter to remove a pin, reverse the seatingstem, make any minor seating depth adjustments thatmay be necessary and go on loading in a fraction of thetime it used to take.

Crimp DieWe’ve made it easy for you to remove the die insert

for cleaning without having to change the critical crimpadjustment. Once your crimp die is set for the properamount of crimp, you’ll never have to change it. This isespecially good news for all of you who load lead bul-lets! Before, you had to unscrew the die from the tool-head and disassemble the die in order to remove anybullet lube or lead residue. Then, you had to start fromsquare one to re-adjust the crimp. Those days are over.All you have to do now is pop a clip and the die insertdrops into your hand for cleaning.

Sizing/Depriming DieThe sizing/depriming die is full-length, to minimum

tolerances, sizing cases down to function in semi- andfull-automatic firearms. We strongly suggest that a head-space case gage be used to correctly adjust the size die.

For high volume users, such as commercial reload-ers, law enforcement agencies, and high power orservice rifle competitors, we also offer .223 and .308die sets with a full-length carbide sizing die. Lubrica-tion is still required, but the increased scratch resist-ance and die longevity of carbide are of great benefitto these groups of users.

The depriming assembly includes a carbide expanderball for “squeak-free,” effortless neck expansion. Thisexpander ball is located in the middle of the deprimingstem to take advantage of superior initial leverage foreasier extraction.

In the event of a stuck case, the design of the deprim-ing assembly allows it to function as a stuck caseremover.

Bullet Seating DieOur bullet seating die is internally designed to keep

the bullet straight throughout the seating process. Onceproperly adjusted, the only measurable runout will bethat which is inherent in the bullet.

Taper Crimp DieThe taper crimp die is also specially configured to

center both the case neck and the case body, therebyaligning the entire cartridge for a more uniform crimp.Dillon Rifle Dies are designed to meet the more rigidrequirements for both accuracy and precision demandedby today’s marksman.

A taper crimp die is preferred for loading ammunitionintended to be used in semiautomatic firearms withdetachable box magazines, and in lever-action firearmswith tubular magazines.

Like so many shooters of a certain age, I belongto that elite fraternity known as Men Who Say“WHAT?” I started shooting .22 rifles, without earprotection, at age 13 at summer camp. I continuedthat practice through high school and college.When I began Basic Training at beautiful Fort Dix,NJ, I learned how to shoot the M1 Garand rifle,also without hearing protection. Assigned to Ft.Belvoir, VA, I was drafted into the post pistol team.In the winter months, we shot .22 LR Colt Woods-mans and High Standards at an indoor range, withno ear protection. In the spring, we moved out-doors to fire 1911A1s. It wasn’t until we were fir-ing 1911s indoors during inter-post competitionthat it was suggested we purchase ear protection…which at that time were earplug devices calledLee Sonic Ear Valves.

Needless to say, by the time I was in my mid-twenties, my hearing was heading downhill.Shooting both indoors and outdoors at various gunclubs, I used foam rubber earplugs, protective ear-muffs or a combination of both. This helped butalso made range officer commands nearly inaudi-ble. As soon as electronic hearing protectors

became available, I got them. They work very wellindeed, but are no real fun in hot weather. Also, asI discovered while shooting Sporting Clays, theycan get dislodged while getting into a propercheek weld in a hurry.

Several years ago, in order to preserve domestictranquility, I finally gave in and invested in a pairof hearing aids. These gadgets cost a bit more thana super-custom 1911, but they do really help,especially if you’re at all interested in hearingwhat other people have to say. Their only realdeficit is, when I go to the range, I have to removemy hearing aids and put on some means of hear-ing protection.

Recently, I was introduced to a new productcalled Etymotic GunSport·PRO ElectronicEarplugs. These are, obviously, earplugs thatenable you to hear normally until the soundexceeds safe levels…like, a .30-06 discharging sixinches from your ear. The device has a NoiseReduction Rating of 25 decibels. When the soundreturns to safe levels, natural hearing is resumed.One neat feature is, the earplugs have anEnhancement+Blast Protection mode, whichamplifies soft conversation or forest sounds, butinstantly protects your hearing when noiseexceeds a safe level.The earplugs come with avariety of eartips, both conventional and foam, to

fit ear canal diameters of 6-13mm. Batteries willlast for about 9 days of continuous operation…ortwo weeks if you open the battery door after everyuse. The earplugs use #10 hearing aid batteries,which cost $8.49 at Costco for a pack of 48.

Opening the box initially, I found a generousassortment of accessories. In addition to theearplugs, there is a wide variety of eartips, bothconventional flanged type and foam, and all arereusable. The foam ones offer the most effectiveseal and can be compressed by rolling them inyour fingers before inserting. There is also a flexi-ble neck cord, which helps protect against loss,and a small (2-1/2” x 2-1/2”) protective case. Alsoincluded are a supply of tiny filters that keep ear-wax and other detritus from entering the device, acleaning tool with brush, and a handy little metaltool for removing and replacing said filters. Apackage of eight #10 batteries is also included.The instruction sheet is well illustrated and veryeasy to follow, and is printed in English and sixother languages.

I put the earplugs to their initial test with two ofthe noisiest guns I had on hand…a new Ruger

SR1911 10mm pistol and an older Ruger No. 1 .30-06 w/custom-fitted compensator. The latter was par-ticularly appropriate because its centenarian car-tridge was the one that destroyed my hearing in thefirst place. During a nearly hour-long shooting ses-sion, in both LO and Enhanced modes, the Gun-Sport·PRO earplugs allowed…and in my case,enhanced…normal conversation, and very effec-tively shut off any harmful blasts. The earplugs werequite comfortable and unobtrusive, far more sothan my usual electronic earmuffs.

Overall, I found the Etymotic GunSport·PROElectronic Earplugs to be an effective, comfortableand vital accessory for hearing protection andeffective communication in any shooting environ-ment. By John MarshallIn the 1960s, THE pistol sport was “Bullseye”

competition. The official course was .22, centerfire, and .45 handguns being shot in slow, timedand rapid fire one-handed at 25 and 50 yards.Since the maximum score was 2700 points, theevent was often called “2700 competition.” HighStandard pistols ruled the .22 events, while centerfire was usually shot with .38 Special Coltor Smith & Wesson revolvers. The .45course was dominated by Colt 1911sin both accurized and factory targetversions. Shooting revolvers in thecenter fire phase was awkward. Theshooter’s grip had to be changed tocock those guns for each shot. Thatconsumed precious time, particularlyin the rapid-fire stage. A lot of com-petitors therefore chose to shoot theirsemiauto .45s in the center fire phas-es, accepting the heavier recoil of such pis-tols to gain rapidity of fire. As the decade of the1960s began, there were no factory semiauto pis-tols that could handle the standard .38 mid-rangewadcutter cartridges. These rounds were difficultto feed through autoloaders, since the bullets wereflat, seated fully in rimmed cases. That suddenlychanged in December of 1960 when Colt intro-duced their Gold Cup National Match 1911. Theyhad succeeded in chambering it for the light-recoiling .38 Special target round. Smith & Wes-son was not going to let that feat gounchallenged. In September of 1961,they introduced the Model 52 Mastertarget pistol, specifically set up to firethe .38 Special wadcutter cartridgewith superb accuracy and reliability.It quickly became the hottest item incenter fire Bullseye competition,and it is still a legend.

Smith & Wesson had some expe-rience with .38 autoloaders, because in 1960, theArmy’s Marksmanship Training Unit had askedthem to craft some pistols chambered for the .38AMU cartridge. This was nothing more than the .38Special mid-range wadcutter round in semi-rimlessform for better feeding through an autoloader.S&W provided them some prototype pistols basedon the Model 39, but the Army decided not to pur-sue this path further. The steel-framed AMU proto-types were designated as Models 39-1, but not somarked. This designation was later changed toModel 52, but no commercial guns were releasedstamped as such at the time. When the commercial.38 Special Model 52 was introduced, the AMUpistols became Models 52-A and were appropriate-ly stamped with that designation before releasing

them to the public. With less than 100 produced,these have become valuable collector items.

Following the Colt .38 Special Gold CupNational Match introduction, S&W went into highgear to develop their own version. The objectiveswere unequalled accuracy, perfect reliability, greathandling, a competition grade trigger and highquality target sights. The project was assigned toJoe Foster, who worked from the basic Model 39

double-action pattern. The new 52 varied in hav-ing a steel frame, and the double-action featurewas locked out with a setscrew, making it basical-ly a single-action design. Foster related that hisprimary challenge was making the pistol work reli-ably with a rimmed cartridge where the bullet wasflat and seated flush with the mouth of the case.He met the challenge admirably, and his magazinedesign fed five rounds (the standard Bullseye com-petition capacity) perfectly.

The next challenge was ensuring that the front ofthe barrel would be returned to the same position atlockup with no wobble, shot after shot, for bestaccuracy. This objective was achieved by giving aportion of the barrel’s muzzle a spheroid shape,

allowing the barrel to tilt down in unlocking and tiltup in locking with absolutely no play. In fact, thestandard of the company for the Model 52 was 10consecutive shots into a 2” circle at 50 yards, butthey conservatively advertised that all shots would gointo a 3.39” circle (diameter of the 50 yard target’s x-ring) at 50 yards from a machine rest. Any pistol notmeeting the 2” requirement was returnedbefore shipping for correction.

The rear sight wasmicrometer adjustable forboth windage and elevation, and well marked fordirection of the change of impact. Adjustmentscould be made with a coin. Each click was equalto a change of 3/4” in elevation and 1/2” inwindage at 50 yards. The front sight was 1/8” widewith a Patridge configuration. This arrangementwas perfect, giving a distinct and easily adjustablesight picture.

The pistol was designed for a special extraweight that could be affixed at the front of theframe. These weights are valuable collector itemstoday. Each gun was shipped with two magazines,a special barrel bushing wrench, a screwdriver,

instruction sheet and cleaning kit in a fitted card-board box.

The Model 52 came standard with a 5-inch bar-rel, and velocity for most mid-range ammo hov-ered around 750 feet per second. It was very softshooting, with little recoil. The gun’s safety simplyrotated a metal block in front of the firing pin. Thisallowed for extensive dry fire practice with noharm to the pistol. A magazine safety was fitted,which prevented firing the pistol when the maga-zine was removed. An adjustable trigger stop was

utilized to control trigger overtravel.Initial manufacture of the Model 52 was

slow, with only 90 pistols produced in 1961.Production increased to 1,078 pistols in 1962.Shooters complained about the locked-out dou-ble-action trigger design. Accordingly, on May

13, 1963, the Model 52-1 was put into pro-duction with a new trigger designthat was single action only. It was agreat improvement, and the trigger

pull became noticeably crisp andlight. The original Model 52’s total production

was 3,500 pistols. In 1971, the extractor wasimproved to a coil-spring type that addressed theoccasional breakage of the original long, wide andflat single-piece spring steel design. This changegenerated a new model number, the 52-2, which

was produced until 1993. With increased pro-duction costs and older machinery wearing

out, coupled with the fading of Bullseyeshooting as a sport, the end of the Model52 became inevitable. The last Model 52-2 was serial number TZW9149, and itwas retired to the S&W gun vault as amuseum piece.

Today, collectors seek the improvedModel 52-2, particularly if a gunbears an early A-prefix serial numberlike the one illustrated. It wasshipped in October 1978 (when itwas priced at $320 retail). These hadthe finest high gloss finish. Later gunsshot just as well, but esthetically were

not quite up to the previous standards ofbluing. One Model 52 was evidently factory

made with a 4” barrel, and 5 were factory cham-bered in 9mm with 4” barrels, probably usingModel 39 slides. No 52s were factory producedwith a nickel finish. The Model 52 was a legend inthe glory days of Bullseye competition, and it’snever been equaled for center fire accuracy. Goodexisting examples are being snapped up whenfound, and prices have been escalating almostexponentially. It was one of the finest products evermade at Smith & Wesson. It was also a very hand-some firearm, and most certainly a classic.

By Oleg VolkThe Czech-designed vz58 is a short-stroke pis-

ton rifle that feeds from detachable box maga-zine…at least that’s what it is in most of the world.In the occupied states of New York and California,a special Liberty model is available instead, in thefinest 1984 sense of the word. The vz58 Libertyfollows the magazine designs of the FN49 and theSKS, with a fixed 10-round magazine fed fromstripper clips. From the 1930s to the 1950s, quitea few rifles – SVT40, G43, AG42 and Hakim –were also designed with detachable magazinesbut loaded primarilyfrom stripper clips. Atthe time, stripperclips were bothcheaper and moreweight efficient thanbox magazines. Inthe case of theCzechPoint vz58 Lib-erty rifle, the com-pelling “advantage”of the stripper clip isin the elimination ofthe detachable maga-zine by oppressivestate laws.

The vz58 origi-nated as a successorto the vz52, a 10-shot rifle that fea-tures a detachable10-rounder but was usually topped off fromstripper clips. With the adoption of vz52/57, a7.62x39 variant, Czechoslovakia also adoptedCOMBLOC-compatible SKS stripper clips. Like theearlier rifle, the vz58 retained stripper clipguides in the receiver cover. For years, theyseemed to be obsolete vestiges of its develop-ment history. More recently, anti-gun legislatorsmade them relevant again.

Loading from clips is pretty simple: insert eitherend of the loaded clip into the guide cutout and

stabilize the clip with your fingers while pushingdown with the thumb close to the clip spine.Once all 10 cartridges are staggered inside thefixed magazine, pull the steel clip out to retain ordiscard it, then pull the bolt handle slightly backand release to chamber the first round. Once themagazine empties, the bolt locks back and therifle is ready for another clip of 10. To speed upthe loading process, pull slightly back on theempty clip and then pull the clip upwards toremove from the bolt carrier slot. Pulling back onthe clip pushes the bolt carrier back far enough to

disengage the boltcatch, so the boltgoes into batterywithout a separatemotion to operatethe charging handle.

This works prettyreliably, and evenallows a very lowprofile in prone. Themain disadvantage isthat swapping to afull magazine whenhalf-empty isn’t pos-sible, and topping offwith loose cartridgesis a little awkward.For that, the bolt hasto be locked backmanually, with thechambered cartridge

ejecting. Actual sustained rate of fire with stripperclips isn’t that much slower than with a 30-roundmagazine, being more limited by the speed ofaiming and by the heat endurance of the rifle.

Unlike the original vz58, which was built verylight with 15-inch light barrel, the Liberty and Eliteversions share 16-inch medium chrome-lined bar-rels of superior quality. Absence of the detachablemagazine allows the Liberty to legally have a tele-scoping stock, a pistol grip and a Phantom flashhider even in the restrictive jurisdictions. The Liber-

ty rifle uses slightly modified MagPul Zhukov furni-ture in either tan or black. Thanks to the higher-quality barrel manufactured by Lothar Walther inGermany and a properly ventilated forend with aheat shield, these newer vz58 variants can run over100 rounds in a row, compared to about 60 of themilitary original. Accuracy is also greatly improved,with the barrel supporting 1.5MOA results com-pared to 4-5MOA typical of the surplus Czech bar-rels. The new barrel is also longer than 16 inches,so it can be threaded for interchangeable muzzledevices instead of requiring a pinned one.

Practical accuracyof the original vz58was limited as muchby the sights as bythe barrel. While therear sight leaf wasmarked from 100 to800 meters, shootingit that far was anexercise in unfound-ed optimism. Thenew rear sight has a“U” (universal) set-ting, indicating 0-300meter point blankrange. In low light,the vz58 benefitsgreatly from the “AK”marked fiber opticfront sight post madeby HiViz. The maincontribution to accu-racy is the side optic rail, supporting both a highsee-through mount and a more useful low mountfor Picatinny-compatible optics. A red dot permitsthe rifle to achieve about 2MOA, and a low-mag-nification scope extends aimed range further yet.The optic options are limited by the short raillength and the top ejection of the empties, butsomething like a mini ACOG or a Leupold 1.5-4x20 fits perfectly and greatly improves practicalaccuracy. Both mechanical accuracy and sighting

options are far superior to what an SKS can deliv-er. Obviously, feeding it good ammunition, eitherfactory or properly crafted handloads, is essential.My friend David Esche, a great fan of the vz58,discovered that the rifle can safely use hard-castbullets without shaving material into the gas port.

Felt recoil is negligible, far less than with theSKS rifle, despite being 0.7 pound lighter than theSoviet design. A short-stroke piston acts on a boltcarrier, which actuates a locking block between itand the bolt, very similar to Beretta M9 design.The lugs of the locking block engage with the rails

By Mark PixlerIn the February 1997 Blue Press we ran

point/counterpoint articles by Duane Thomas andPeter Caroline titled “Is the Revolver Obsolete?”and “The Revolver Rules!” More recently I washaving a conversation with Cameron Benz, anoth-er of my contributors, who opined that revolversaren’t necessarily obsolete, but what they HAVEbecome is “too damned expensive!”

There was a time, during the rising tide of“Wundernine” automatics, that revolvers wereboth plentiful and cheap. As police departmentsand security agencies abandoned their 19th Cen-tury-era weaponry in favor of the new, high-tech,high-capacity wonders, the cast-offs were sellingat glutted-market prices. That was about the time Ihad decided I was a “revolver guy.” It might alsohave come about because I’m a perennial cheap-skate, but that’s yet-another story.

These days, revolver enthusiasts have a compar-atively limited field from which to choose, andprices have risen considerably. So, for those of uswho still like to shoot revolvers in competition, orthose who would like to try it without breaking thebank, what’s a good alternative?

I’d like to humbly suggest the Sarsilmaz SR 38.357 Magnum/.38 Special revolver. Manufacturedin Turkey and imported by TR Imports Inc. of FortWorth, Texas, the SR 38’s suggested retail price isfrom $481 to $558 – MUCH less than the MSRPof competing revolvers. It fits holsters available forSmith & Wesson L-Frame models and we foundthat the W.C. Wolff Co. spring kits #15073 (stan-dard) and #15072 (reduced power) fit like theywere made for it.

Since it fits holsters for L-Frame revolvers, onewould naturally assume that speedloaders madefor L-Frames would work for the SR 38 as well.Not so fast. I tried my Safariland L-Frame CompIIIs and immediately noticed a clearance problemwith the thumb latch. No problem, I thought, I’lljust replace the thumb latch with a Hogue Compe-tition model. Still a “no-go” situation. Then Iremoved the thumb latch altogether and foundthat even without the thumb latch clearance issue,the L-Frame Comp III itself seemed a bit tight. Ithen tried a K-Frame Comp III, which actuallyseemed to work better.

Ultimately, I’d recommend that anyone whobuys an SR 38 do some experimentation withvarious brands of speedloaders – HKS, Safari-land, 5 Star Firearms, Speed Beez, etc. – and seewhich ones work best. There ought to be plentyof used speedloaders available at gun shows oron e-Bay, and it would be worthwhile doingsome testing. I plan to start with a file, the facto-ry SR 38 thumb latch and Safariland K-FrameComp III speedloaders.

Although having to fiddle a bit with speed-loaders is annoying, I’m willing to forgive thatbecause the Sarsilmaz SR 38 has no “safety”locking mechanism. One of my colleagues hereat Dillon Precision has experienced failure ofsuch a locking mechanism during a match whenit inadvertently engaged. Damned inconvenientduring a competition, but – fortunately – theUSPSA targets weren’t shooting back! By the way,I’m pretty sure my colleague’s CARRY gundoesn’t have a “safety” locking mechanism.

The SR 38 I picked to review features a matteblack finish that reminds me of Parkerizing. Triggeraction benefited greatly from the addition of theW.C. Wolff Co. reduced-power spring kit, but I’veshot “brand name” revolvers with heavier triggerpulls than the SR 38’s was from the factory.

Other than the spring kit, all I’ve done to theSR 38 so far is a rather hastily applied coat ofLiquid Paper® correction fluid to the front sight.Speaking of which, the front sight is tall, thin andpinned into a dovetail. It complements theadjustable rear sight perfectly, given the rearnotch is wide and allows for plenty of light oneither side – a blessing for my crappy eyesight.

The rear sight looks and functions exactly likean aftermarket revolver sight we used to offer inThe Blue Press that sold for about a hundredbucks. Kind of makes the SR 38’s $481 MSRPseem like even MORE of a bargain.

So, does this mean I’m going to sell all therevolvers I acquired during the rise of the Wun-dernines in favor of the SR 38? Nope, ain’t gonnahappen. Am I going to add the Sarsilmaz SR 38revolver to that collection? Oh YEAH.

familiar with the story of pioneering ammunitioncompany, Super Vel. There’s no hard evidence onwho exactly first invented the jacketed hollow-point, since both Lee Jurras and Jim Harvey weresimultaneously experimenting with taking .358”caliber rifle bullets, which are of course jacketedwith a lead core, cutting off the bullet tips, givingthe then-exposed lead various cavities and hol-lowpoints, then shooting them in handguns with a.357” bore diame-ter. There were alsoa few other peopleworking along simi-lar lines at the time.But there can be nodoubt it was Jurraswho popularizedthe concept throughthe company hestarted in 1965. Hedid this by droppingbullet mass down toweights previouslyconsidered light fora caliber by hollow-pointing them, thendriving those lightslugs to high veloci-ties. So popular, sogroundbreaking,was Jurras’approach, so threat-ening to majorammunition compa-nies, they bandedtogether to cut offhis supply of brass.This was before the days of companies like Star-line, willing to sell top quality cartridge casings toanyone with the money. Super Vel closed its doorsin 1975. In its 10 years of existence, Super Vel for-ever changed the definition of what makes goodself-defense ammunition.

Recently Super Vel has risen from the ashes, atits helm a man known to many of us as the formereditor of American Handgunner magazine,Cameron Hopkins. Having started his own compa-

ny selling remanufactured ammo, Hopkins wasintrigued by the idea of resurrecting Super Vel fora modern audience. (With all-new brass, obvious-ly.) Even though the rights to the name had longsince expired, feeling it would be wrong to use“Super Vel” without Lee Jurras’ permission, Hop-kins broached the idea to Jurras, and was told, “Ihave no further use for that name. You may have it,with my blessing.”

Obviously it would be impossible to replicateSuper Vel’s trailblazing ways today. There are sim-

ply way too manyjacketed hollow-point self-defenseloads out there, andhave been fordecades; that genieis well and truly outof the bottle. Realiz-ing this, Hopkinshas instead gearedhis company’s out-put to an under-served segment ofthe ammunitiongame: loadsdesigned specifical-ly to give ultra-highvelocities from theshort barrels foundon compact andsub-compact hand-guns intended espe-cially for concealedcarry. Thus far thecompany has only ahandful of loads,with more upcom-ing, but the one that

instantly leapt out at me as most interesting wastheir 90-grain JHP +P in 9mm. Super Vel’s websitelists 1,473 feet per second for that load out of aGLOCK 43. Well, you know I had to test THAT.

I reposed to the range with the Super Vel 90-grain JHP +P and five different autopistols in avariety of barrels lengths. Though this load wasconceptualized for short-barreled autos, still I feltpeople might be curious how it performed fromlonger barrels, as well. I know I was. Thus my test

failures, but, at least in the five guns with which Thomastested it, that proved to not be the case.

guns included (from longest to shortest, factorystated barrel lengths) the GLOCK 34 (5.32” or5.31”, depending on which GLOCK catalog youread), Wilson ESP Classic (5”), Wilson EDC X9(4”), GLOCK 43 (3.39”), and finally Kimber’s UltraCDP II (3”). I ran 20 rounds apiece through eachgun over my CED Millennium chronograph. Aver-age velocities, as well as USPSA/IPSC/IDPApower factors (this latter measurement is impor-tant for reasons which will soon be obvious),were as follows:

GLOCK 34: 1,545 fps, 139.1 pfWilson ESP Classic: 1,539 fps, 138.5 pfWilson EDC X9: 1,468 fps, 132.1 pfGLOCK 43: 1,434 fps, 129.0 pfKimber Ultra CDP II: 1,436 fps, 129.2 pf

Okay, we all know that differences in tempera-ture, altitude, even the individual gun, can affectvelocities. While Super Vel’s stated velocity fortheir 90-grain JHP +P from a GLOCK 43 is a bitmore than what I got, still it’s close. Note how lit-tle velocity difference there is between the 3”Kimber Ultra CDP II and 4” Wilson EDC X9, an

indicator this load achieves the vast majority of itsvelocity in the first few inches of barrel length.This is exactly what you want in a load for short-barreled autos.

The amazing thing is, even at those velocities,due to the light bullet weight, recoil is mild. If yourun this load through the power factor equation, itcomes out right around the same as (maybe slight-ly more than) factory standard pressure 9mm hard-ball, which tends to run in the mid-120s to mid-130s depending on barrel length. Thus it’s no greatshock the recoil level feels very similar to 9mmball. It’s very slightly snappier, and, as you wouldexpect, it’s loud, but for such a stompin’ load thelevel of backbite is amazingly small. This is a FUNload to shoot.

My supply of Super Vel 90-grain JHP +P hap-pened to show up right around the same time asmy sample Wilson EDC X9. Because I knew a lotof people who were curious about the EDC X9,and I figured they might also be curious about theSuper Vel 90-grain load, I took this gun with me totwo different pistol matches and let anyone who

wanted to, fire the EDC X9 with Super Vel. I liter-ally had people lined up waiting their turn to firethe Wilson/Super Vel combo. No one failed to beimpressed by the gun, and the ammo. The com-mon refrain, aside from what a nice gun was theEDC X9, was just how blown away people wereby the moderate recoil impulse, especially after Itold them how fast the bullets were going. Whilewalking back to the clubhouse afterward, at onematch, I heard one of the guys I’d let shoot theWilson/Super Vel enthusing to a friend of his, whohadn’t gotten to, “One thousand four hundred andsixty-eight feet per second...and it feels like you’refiring 9mm hardball!”

Accuracy was tested with 5-shot groups fromthe bench at 50 feet, the maximum distance pos-sible on the indoor range where I do most of myshooting. Groupability was more than decent,with Best In Show going to the Wilson EDC X9 at1.3”. The Kimber Ultra CDP II barely missed 1stplace, putting four rounds into a tight 0.8” with,alas, a single flier opening things up to a stillacceptable 2” even. Unlike some loads withnon-standard ballistics, the Super Vel 90-grainJHP +P can keep its bullet holes together. You’dthink a bullet this light and fast would hit to aradically different elevation than standard loads,but with almost every gun fired (more aboutwhich shortly), elevation was either spot-on orclose to it, at most 1” high. Strangely enough,

every one of those guns, which had previouslybeen sighted-in for other loads, placed its bullets1” to 1.5” left of point of aim. This could ofcourse all be easily dealt with if your gun hadadjustable sights, and still somewhat easily withfixed sights through drifting the rear sight in itsdovetail, and a slightly higher front sight, if youwanted to be really nitpicky about having perfectpoint of impact/point of aim.

In the interest of excruciating honestly, I mustmention the exception to all this was the GLOCK43, which with its stock sights placed bullets sohigh above point of aim I was occasionally bang-ing them off the target carrier, and gave absolute-ly horrible groups. No, I can’t tell you how horri-ble since I threw away those targets as a way ofblocking the trauma, even those few on which allfive bullets managed to strike the entire 14”x14”sheet of paper. But since the G43 was doing thesame thing with every single load I put throughit, you can’t really blame that on Super Vel. Idon’t believe I have ever, in 28 years of being agunwriter, been so unimpressed with a gun forwhich I had high hopes. I know some peoplelove the GLOCK 43, some people hate it. Granted all my test guns were from quality man-ufacturers, also granted there may well be someautopistols out there allergic to Super Vel 90-grain JHP +P from a feed reliability standpoint.All I can say is, you couldn’t prove it by me.Even the GLOCK 43 worked with it, if by“worked” you mean “fed reliably.”

Several people with whom I’ve discussed thisload made the same comment: “With that veloc-ity, this would be the load if you wanted topunch through a windshield.” Though I have noempirical test data to back that up, it’s certainlya fascinating idea.

This load actually reminds me a lot of Reming-ton’s old 88-grain JHP 9mm where Remingtontook a .380 bullet and stuck it into a 9mm casing.That sucker would crack 1,500 fps out of a Beretta92D, and I say that as someone who chronoedthat ammo, out of that gun. The Remington 88-grain JHP was kind of a cult load among 9mmfans in search of maximum velocity from their hol-lowpoints. The major difference between that loadand the Super Vel 90-grainer is that the former hasbeen out of production for years. The Super Velload is available now.

I have to mention, a bit of an aside but impor-tant, I think, just how cool it is that Cameron Hop-kins, instead of designing a new look for hisammo boxes, which he easily could have done,has chosen instead to recreate the classic Super

Vel red-and-yellow boxes. For those familiar withthe original Super Vel, things like that mean a lot.

Certain specialty ammo companies will cheer-fully charge you through the nose for their prod-uct. Think in terms of $31.95 for a 20-round boxof 9mm, though you can get it down to $20 ifyou’re willing to do some online shopping. Do themath, that would be anywhere from $50 to almost$80 for a 50-round box, could such things be had.Cameron Hopkins doesn’t play that game. TheSuper Vel 90-grain JHP +P costs $39.95 per 50-round box. At that price, this is a screaming deal.

Some time after receiving my CARE packagefrom Super Vel, I was told by the fine folks at Dil-lon Precision they’d decided to begin selling SuperVel through The Blue Press. My request to editorMark Pixler, “Hey, I’d like to do an article on theSuper Vel 90-grain JHP +P,” was made before Iknew my test results would be published in aplace through which you can buy the ammo. Thatwas never my intent; this is just how it workedout. Go figure. So the truth is, if you find this loadas interesting as I do, you can fill out the formcontained in the centerfold of the magazine/cata-log you’re holding in your hands right now andmail it in, or just call 1-800-223-4570 and havethem hook you up. This load, given its extremelyhigh velocity, accuracy in most guns, moderaterecoil impulse, and affordability, really is some-thing special.
